23 Best Places for a Romantic Fall Getaway

"Staying at The Lodge at Glendorn in Bradford means cozying up by a two-story sandstone fireplace in a main lodge with beamed cathedral ceilings, stained-glass windows, and a sunporch, or choosing a private cabin by running streams; the lodge offers chef-prepared picnic spreads for two and custom cooking classes using garden-fresh produce and stream-caught trout." - Alison Lewis Alison Lewis Alison Lewis is a travel and food journalist, recipe developer, and cookbook author. I'm so sorry to write this rather poor review. As locals, my husband and I had both been to Glendorn to dine years before and enjoyed it. But this year, I wanted to do something special for my birthday, so I asked him to take me to this exclusive resort for lunch. Unfortunately, it didn't match up to previous experiences. Now, my own dish of Caesar salad with white anchovies, along with truffle fries, was quite good. But his burger was quite bad. Our server brought it to the table with apologies for the delay: The chef had to finish it in the oven, she said. My husband himself is a chef and he cringed, for he ordered it medium-rare and juicy. As a result, the dry burger had the texture of overcooked meat loaf. Plus, it was topped with fatty, ill-cooked bacon and a slice of tomato that contained a green core. He used an entire mini-bottle of Heinz ketchup to make it palatable, and is still complaining about it! Guess we won't go there for Christmas dinner after all...||On the plus side, the staff we encountered had lovely, courtly manners; we enjoyed the fresh-baked biscuits and excellent Glendorn spring water and were introduced to a marvelous house red which we later sought out at our local state store.

We found Glendorn to be a welcoming, interesting and beautiful resort with many complimentary activities, a friendly and gracious staff, beautifully appointed accomodations set in the breathtaking beauty of the Allegheny Nation Forest. |From start to finish we enjoyed a first rate experience. The accomodations were spacious and charming. The food was delicious and served impecably by the staff in beautiful dining rooms. Every encounter we had with the staff made us feel welcome and appreciated. |Terrific activities were available for our use. The flexibility of being able to do these activities on our own schedule was convenient, and also demonstrated the graciousness that characterized our entire experience. During our stay there was swimming in a beautiful heated pool, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, hiking, bicycle boating, bicycle riding and fly fishing, all of which are complimentary. There is also an assortment of guided adventures available as well as a spa with exercise classes. The fitness center was small but adequate; there is also a spacious and luxurious 'playroom' with one of 2 pool tables (the other is in the main lodge) a self serve ice cream bar, popcorn machine and ping pong table. Lawn games (bocci, cornhole and croquet) are provided and are also complimentary. |After busy days spent doing activities, we took advantage of the many fireplaces for a chance to read; every room offers a collection of books including the most noteworthy authors in literature.

Our two night stay at the Lodge at Glendorn was one of those very rare travel experiences that left thinking about a return trip next year. The accommodations and the expansive grounds has one pleasant surprise after another. Our stay in The Dorn Suite was a glimpse into an era of elegance among breathtaking beauty in every direction. Dining is another treat. The chef and kitchen staff presented a variety of fine dining options and the service staff seem determined to make your stay one that will be memorable for all the right reasons. We can’t wait to return. A true “six star” destination.

Our recent stay at Glendorn Lodge was nothing short of outstanding. The staff is exceptional, the accommodations are perfect, the food is amazing and the settings (in the middle of the forest) and exactly what we wanted. We had the best time learning how to fly fish with Shane. We are totally hooked! |We will definitely be returning. Best place to recharge and be treated to real luxury - in a rustic setting.

We just attended a 3 day family wedding event at Glendorn. From start to finish it was magical. The property, accommodations, activities, and particularly the dining were spectacular down to the smallest detail. We have stayed in many lovely places in our travels over the years, but what set Glendorn apart from the rest is the highest level of service and hospitality we've ever received. Their staff is truly a treasure, sincerely wanting every guest to experience all that Glendorn has to offer.

Tremendous beauty of the rooms and grounds, and superior quality of the dining and recreational opportunities, are only superseded by the friendliness and unsurpassed hospitality of the staff. We have been blessed to travel to numerous four- and five-star destinations around the world and have never felt more at home - treated more like cherished family than guests - than we have at the Glendorn. We found true treasure and plan a 3rd weekend trip this September.

My Husband and I visited The Lodge at Glendorn for a two-day mini-moon just after our wedding. The experience was spectacular across the board. From the glasses of Mumm Champagne and the freshly baked treats in our room upon our arrival to the individualized service and attention to detail across every aspect of our stay, this experience surpassed every expectation. Visiting the Glendorn is like a step back in time, paired with modern, luxury touches that aim to take your experience to the next level. A main lodge with warm colors and finishes, a heated pool complete with cabanas, miles of trails for hiking, lakes for fishing, fully stocked wine cellars, and exceptional food at every meal--it will not disappoint. Our compliments to the incredible staff and management who make this enchanted little retreat what it is. The best way to start our next chapter as a newly married couple. Thank you, Glendorn!

A Gentleman’s Account of Glendorn, Bradford, Pennsylvania I first made my way to Glendorn at the encouragement of my Vistage compatriots, whose praises of this secluded haven stirred my imagination to no end. Eager for the experience, I arrived a full day ahead of schedule, intent on soaking in every element of the place. From the very moment I passed through the great gates and began the four-minute drive across the vast grounds, I knew I had entered another world. The winding approach unfolded like a prologue to a grand novel: manicured trails, towering timber, and the suggestion that one was returning to an era when oil barons reigned, and families gathered at their estates as though they were kingdoms unto themselves. When I arrived at the main lodge, I was greeted carside by a staff member with umbrella in hand and champagne at the ready—a gesture befitting royalty. Inside, Megan, whose attentiveness never once faltered, ushered me into the story of Glendorn. She spoke of the land, the lodges, and the amenities with such knowledge and grace that I felt less like a guest and more like a welcomed confidant. That very afternoon, we took to the shooting grounds under the guidance of Charles, an instructor of remarkable patience and skill. For those unacquainted with firearms, his counsel was indispensable; for the seasoned hand, his knowledge elevated the experience. To shoot with DT-12s—of such fine make and balance—was itself a privilege, though I did note that one could bring their own piece should they wish. The facilities themselves, from the remote throwers to the skeet and trap houses, left no detail unattended. From there, we hiked to Robber’s Pond, where fly fishing amidst the still waters provided a communion with nature both serene and exhilarating. The rains of the prior day had summoned insects in abundance, and the fish rose eagerly. The pond, manicured with perfection, allowed one to cast from any vantage without hindrance, and the reward of many rising fish made the effort pure delight. Meals, I must say, surpassed even the loftiest of expectations. Dish upon dish emerged as if composed by an artist, each one drawing forth the essence of the freshest provisions. It was not mere sustenance but true dining—an experience equal to the grandeur of the grounds. When my wife joined me on Friday, we moved from John’s Cabin to another dwelling, each cabin itself a time capsule of architecture and taste. Constructed between the 1920s and 1960s, each seemed to embody the pinnacle of design from its respective decade. To dwell in them is to step back into history without ever sacrificing comfort or refinement. The history of Glendorn itself is a marvel: raised during the Great Depression by the Dorn family in 1929, held within their stewardship for generations, and opened to the public only in 1995. The sheer size of the estate—over 1,500 acres—astonishes. One quickly realizes the vast effort required to maintain such splendor, from the miles of manicured trails and warming huts to the evidence of heavy machinery that keeps the grounds impeccable. The days passed swiftly, too swiftly. Between the saunas, the endless trails, the artfully prepared meals, and the sheer romance of the place, I found myself reluctant to depart. Indeed, my wife all but had to drag me away. Glendorn is not simply a destination; it is an encounter with history, nature, and artistry intertwined. To stay here is to step into another age, to taste the grandeur of a bygone era, and to etch into memory an experience that cannot be replicated elsewhere. I left not merely refreshed but transformed, and I await my return with great anticipation.

Yelp
My partner and I enjoyed our stay at Glendorn, a most wonderfully wooded and secluded retreat. The location of the lodge is truly magnificent, surrounded by acres and acres of beautiful forest. Quietness abounds. Walking around the property is truly delightful in the Fall. If you need to get away from it all, get back to nature, this is where you need to stay. The charming historic lodge is well maintained; the Green Suite is very spacious and wonderfully appointed. Dinner service was lovely enough. One cannot go wrong staying here.

Yelp
We just finished a family weekend at Glendorn and it was as wonderful as it has always been. I never know how to explain this gem because it is rustic and elegant at the same time. The service is impeccable and the accommodations are either in amazing cabins, that still hearten to a different era or, amazing rooms in the spectacular Big House. In either case the amenities and the touches of elegant comfort are on par with what you would want from this Relais and Chateau property. We hiked, shot skeet and fly fished and no matter where you go or what you do the staff is always helpful but yet low key. They don't hover but they anticipate your needs and strive to meet them. The chef also prepares meals that rival even Michelin star restaurants in an atmosphere that is so cozy you just want to have a long, leisurely meal. Or dine in your cabin or you can get a picnic lunch prepared! There is nowhere else I have been that offers this type of rustic luxury...highly recommend a visit here if you can...it is treat like no other!

Yelp
Best getaway weekend of my life! My husband and I went there on our anniversary. We did cross country skiing, snow mobiling and skeet shooting. We had never done thise activities before but they had people there to show you how We stayed in one of the cabins. I felt so pampered. Every time we left and returned to the cabin, the fridge was restocked with soda, we had fresh snacks ( chocolate chip cookies were awesome) place was cleaned, fireplaces cleaned and ready for a new fire. All of the snacks and sodas/ water were all complementary so you did not feel like they were constantly nickel and diming us to make a profit. The breakfast had so many choices and our waitresses were pleasant and remembered by day two what we liked to drink and what we had before. We saw all the fun stuff for the summer and are planning in going with our son.

Yelp
GREAT GREAT GREAT place. I can't stop raving about our weekend at Glendorn to our friends. You can make it as action packed and planned as you want, or as lazy and leisurely as you want, or a great mixture of both. My husband and I had a great weekend sans little ones where we hiked, canoed, and lazed about in front of a fire in our private lodge (The Roost is awesome). We also had in-room couples massage in front of the fire on a cold rainy day. You have access to free bikes, tennis, fly-rods, canoes, kayaks, you name it! The food is amazing! Breakfast and dinner were my favorites. The waitstaff was a mix of professional staff and those who are still learning, but everyone was extremely happy and pleasant and there to help you with anything you needed. We were here on a cold wet rainy spring weekend, I could only imagine what a winter weekend or a fall weekend would be like! Actually, I even imagine a summer weekend in the mountains would be a great break from the heat of DC!!!
