The Best Family-Friendly Resorts in Hawaii, According to a Local | Condé Nast Traveler

"Perfect for family vacations and small group gatherings, this place feels more like home than hotel, marrying refined taste with laid-back island vibes across standalone cottages, bungalows, and villas featuring Hawaiian plantation-style architecture, contemporary furnishings, and fully equipped kitchens. Private outdoor spaces—think outdoor showers and broad porches, plus barbecues, firepits, and even private pools in some units—invite lingering, while a newly built sports complex with bikes to borrow, pickleball courts, and hoops, along with a lagoon-style saltwater pool, keep everyone active. Families wander the 10-acre farm to pick flowers, fruits, and veggies and often spot nēnē, Hawaii’s beloved state bird." - Catherine Toth Fox

We had an alright stay at the Lodge but really wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is looking for a five star hotel experience. The biggest pro is the units are lovely and spacious. You get a proper one bedroom apartment unit alongside a parking spot included. Service was very lacking. Some of the amenities advertised were unavailable. The Lodge is a country club first and it definitely shows in how they treat the guests. Dinner and brunch reservations were difficult to come by at the clubhouse and the staff acted like we should have been grateful for everything we requested especially if it could potentially take spots away from club members. They make it so difficult to golf here as a nonmember I don’t know why even advertise. A lot of the site is under construction. Concierge, front desk etc are very limited and after hours service is minimal. The service level is simply not at the level you’d expect at any hotel at this price point. Overall we found our stay disappointing and would not recommend to others unless you have a connection with the club.

We recently stayed at The Lodge at Kukui'ula and overall had a good experience. The property is beautiful, and our room was very spacious with a breathtaking view overlooking the golf course. The pool area is fantastic, offering plenty of space to relax, and the gardens are exceptionally well maintained, which we really appreciated. The staff were always friendly, attentive, and helpful, which made our stay even more enjoyable.||||There are a few areas that could be improved. The welcome upon arrival did not feel as warm as expected, and for a five-star property we were surprised that there is no 24-hour service since everything closes quite early. We also had not realized that housekeeping is only provided once during a week-long stay. In addition, we experienced an issue with the air conditioning that could not be resolved during our visit, though the general management handled the situation very professionally after our stay and gave us a reparation which was very nice.||||Despite these small drawbacks, our overall experience was very positive. The combination of beautiful surroundings, comfortable accommodations, and excellent staff left us with lasting memories.

If you want luxury, you will not be disappointed! This place is NICE! Every detail at this property was well thought out. Everyone was so friendly and the property is gorgeous! The food and drinks were great too! The sunsets from the clubhouse each night on the great lawn cannot be beat! Rent a bike and bike to the shopping village and around the property. Take a long morning walk all over the grounds, there are tons of paths to stroll on. We loved the Farm Stand that allowed us to grab any flowers and fruits that we wanted for FREE daily! If you are a golfer, you will LOVE this course! One of the better maintained courses we have ever been to. Ocean view holes are awesome too! It is pricey but worth it! There is no cart girl serving stuff so at each of the two bathroom stops, there is also a code to access a door that has unlimited drinks (alcohol included) and snacks inside to grab for FREE! It was awesome! A big shout out to LeeAnn in the pro shop! I have never met someone more kind and accommodating. The bungalow we stayed in (Bungalow 12) was on hole 1 and was so nice! You would never need to leave this property if you wanted to just relax. There is plenty to do! I would highly recommend staying here and would only stay here if I came back to Kauai. This is for sure the nicest place on the island. We spent 4 nights in a VRBO on the north shore, which was amazing, but then came here for another 4 nights to experience the south shore. It was the perfect way to split up the island to see and do it all!

If you are coming to play golf, beware. Guests can only play in the afternoon and not at all on Mondays, even if there isn’t a single member playing. We stayed in a one bedroom and it’s definitely not worth the cost— small, no window cover for privacy or light blocking, no closet, inadequate lighting. Also the resort does not provide housekeeping at all unless you complain. I expect the two and three bedrooms are much nicer but you still need to make a fuss to get maid service. The course is gorgeous if you ever get on it. Interesting and playable. The staff is lovely and the food healthy and delicious.

A very odd experience. We booked the largest villa with a pool available as we have 5 people in our family. Two weeks before Christmas the hotel wrote us that the air conditioning in the unit was broken and there were no other options for us and we can cancel if we want. Of course, we couldn't book something on such short notice. We asked if they could fix it please. They put cooling units in each of the rooms and it proved to not be a problem but different than central air for sure. When we arrived the greeter was not friendly in the least, seemed annoyed when we asked if the room was ready at 3:00 p.m. and then didn't seem to want show us to our room which was one of the most unfriendly experiences we have ever had when arrived at a hotel *she kept trying to find someone else to do it. They gave us a 15% discount because of the air conditioning which was very nice. The plunge pool and outdoor area of villa was not cleaned or swept once during our stay and with the numerous geese and birds in the area, there is lots of animal droppings and the pool was unusable. The restaurant, valet, golf, bike and spa staff were extremely warm and friendly in contrast to the greeting. The golf course, pools and spa are all terrific and it is a nice setting but there is a definite preference for the club members. Housekeeping was only scheduled for twice during the week which is highly unusual for the pricing of the property. When they tried to cancel our second service and we inquired with the same woman at the front office, she told me they are very busy. When we returned to our room, the staff was there to clean and we were thrilled. They were radioed while i stood there and were basically being told they shouldn't be there. They stayed and clean but again, super odd. For a five star property and pricing, you did not have a feeling of being welcome. It was our first time on the island and almost everywhere the locals are friendly and lovely. I have never written a review like this before.

What an amazing place to stay. I never even knew it was there. We stayed for 5 nights out of our 11 days on the island and played golf twice, sat by the pool several times and enjoyed the restaurants. The staff is amazing and treat you like owners. Really responsive management team. We did have one little hiccup on the last day with a bed but they did everything they could to make everything right!! I highly recommend! WE have been to Kauai over 20 times and this is the best place to stay!!!

This was by far the best family vacation ever. The staff were so friendly and helpful and welcoming!! The accommodations were spotless and there were so many things to do on property we almost never had to leave. We had a wonderful time, great food at the restaurants and great kitchen to cook for ourselves. We would definitely return! Thank you for giving us a wonderful Hawaiian experience.

The whole property was absolutely beautiful! We went to a family reunion there. We were able to stay in villas right next to each other and another couple stayed in the cottages which were also absolutely gorgeous. My family of eight stayed in a three bedroom villa # 11. The villa was just perfect! With breathtaking views, beautiful pool and bonfire pit on patio! This was an ideal place and set up for a family! The whole resort was clean, beautiful and the staff was superb! On top of that, it was a quiet and peaceful resort which was ideal. We went to two other places for dinner and although the hotels were beautiful, there were too many people - very crowded and loud. It's different because it is not a hotel but rather a neighborhood of cottages and villas. Huge difference! The grounds are breathtaking! I loved this place and will be back!! Highly recommend

Yelp
We had an amazing experience with our young kids and their grandparents. It'll be a memory we'll cherish for a long time. Luckily our cottage was without major issues, and the fact that there were geckos and some wildlife in and around the cottage at times didn't bother us. This is in fact a tropical island and Kauai, after all. Still tremendously well kept properties. The set up is ideal for families and/or folks interested in golf trips. The property is sprawling, picturesque, and tremendously available. You can walk or golf cart wherever you'd like. We found it without major crowds even during peak child/summer break visiting times. This is likely due to the high number of owners who don't rent and the higher price cost. It was very peaceful but just enough other families around. There's a few adult only areas (pool, etc) for those honeymooning or getting away from their kids. The pool area next to the lodge/club and the spa are the two shinning stars. The pool is actually multiple pools, none too deep, and two different hot tubs of differing temps. The small tube slide is a hit for kids and adults. There's no lifeguard so beware but the average 3' depth makes it easier for parents to relax more (but still monitor!). The spa experience was amazing. It was one of the best massages I've ever had -- probably number two! -- and amazing spa benefits and layout, too. Believe it or not the $75 per day cost just to use the facilities is worth it between the steam room, sauna, hot and cold pools, and awesome treats. Highly recommending going through the self-guided multiple step traditional treatment. Don't worry the gym is free! Btw, they have a full selection of their own Peloton shoes. You don't need to bring your own. Tons of classes and personal trainers if you'd like. The daily activities are fun for kids. Make sure to sign up in advance. The club restaurant is fairly good as is the pool restraunt and bar but it's worth adventuring and cooking in -- the farm/farm stand has lots of free bounty each day. Go visit it! The staff were all super welcoming, friendly, and helpful. It's a laid back place but attentive (e.g., every 3rd day house-keeping). You'd do best to seek them out if you need it, and know it's not going to be immediate texts back to concierge. It's island-life style but still luxury stay vibes. Cottage is great set-up for in-laws/grandparents with separate Ohana king beds. Second bedroom in cottage itself can be made into twin beds. Very nice kitchen and living areas. Showers awesome and fun outdoor showers if geckos don't weird you out. Only wishes are for longer hours on the gym (closes at 6pm or 7pm some days, one day early at 5pm), and some easier EV hook-ups. This was a great use of our Hyatt points. We stayed her previously in a Villa for non-points, and it was wonderful for our family there, too. We'll be back!

Yelp
Although beautiful, VERY dirty. We are in Villa 1. $7K a night. Cockroaches, King Spiders, Beetles. Non stop. The GM, Andy, of Destination Hyatt, is of no help. They said they sprayed for pests and cleaned but we came home to more bugs. Including one in my bed. I find them crawling on my clothes that are hanging. It is incredibly sad and frustrating. This villa is not well kept. Our amazing vacation is ruined. I've stayed in Hawaii many times and never encountered this. Do not stay here! I asked him to move us to another villa or to the Hyatt down the street. He emphatically said no. Poor management. I am so so upset.

Yelp
Lovely property with well equipped villas, Cottages and bungalows. Clubhouse has beautiful views of the coastline. The pool seemed to be geared for children with very few quiet spots for adults. Even the adult pool had children and no pool attendants to help move chairs or umbrellas. Service is extremely slow and although friendly, very unorganized. If you're looking for great service skip this inviting property. Also, lots of construction and noise during the day.

Yelp
This is literally the most perfect resort we have ever had the pleasure of staying at. It is truly paradise. It is that elusive blend of privacy, effortlessly thoughtful service, and low-key luxury. The food, the lodgings, the outdoor showers, the spa... are all lovely in every way. We have been celebrating our anniversary here for several years and it continues to be our favorite week of the year. We cannot wait to return.
