Upon arrival, the front desk looked abandoned and I searched for a bell, but couldn't find one, so I settle for peeking around the corner to the back and doing a soft hello, which brought out a desk clerk. She was friendly and welcoming. We were given almost the same room as last visit, which was above this room. The clerk informed us that we were given an upgrade. Nice. Everyone likes an upgrade.
This was our second stay here and while you can tell that this was once a world class resort, it sadly has deteriorated and is no longer. The furnishings are worn. The carpets are mismatched, some of which need to be stretched at a minimum, replaced, if I am being quite honest. The ice machines have mineral deposits cascading down the machines, as if housekeeping and maintenance both thought the other should handle that.
We asked for maid service and a new tissue holder with a new box of tissue, when going out one day and returned that evening to the same unmade bed, no clean towels, and still no tissue. The desk sent the maintenance guy to clean the room. The only thing worse than having to clean your own room, when on vacation, is having to stand out of the way, while someone else cleans it, so we took the towels and a new box of tissue and gave him the sticky tissue holder we had requested be replaced. He was going to replace the holder, but the replacement never arrived. The tissue holder was made of a material that gets sticky when it's old and degrading. It wasn't dirty, it just felt disgusting to touch.
The room had repairs that were obvious, having been finished by someone who didn't have the skills to make it look like new and when we called to ask how to start the fireplace, since the button didn't start it, we were informed the fireplace was out of order. It was 20 degrees out with snow on the ground. That fireplace would have been a great way to warm up and get some romantic ambiance going.
Lighting in the room could be lighter. A dimmer switch for a central light would be great. It's too dark for any detail work or to do makeup.
The vanity has no drawers and is small. While sitting on the toilet you can see the drainpipe that extends from the wall on the left of the vanity to the p-trap centered on the vanity. Knowing that the pipes were located on the left, why would someone purchase an open vanity or not at least paint the pipes to match the walls?
It just seems there isn't a lot of thought put into the decisions made with regard to maintenance and it shows. In my husband's words, it has seen better days.
My last interaction was checkout. I went to ask for a portfolio and the wait wasn't an issue. I could see that the clerk was busy on the phone. When she was done, she asked how my stay was, but I think it was a rhetorical question, because when I told her about housekeeping being a no show the day before, she just said, "I'm sorry about that," handed me the receipt and went about her business. Dismissed.
I thought, alrighty then, turned and walked away. With all the choices we have for lodging at the lake, there is no need to stay here again. Time to explore a little more.
