The Long Hall

The Long Hall made it onto my “Dublin Pub Crawl” list thanks to a mix of online recommendations and a bartender at the Guinness Gravity Bar. And when a Guinness bartender tells you where to get a great pint, you go. No questions asked. This authentic pub is old, beautiful and full of charm. A perfect place to slow down for a pint of Guinness, which is exactly what we did, along with a couple of Baby Guinness shots to keep things interesting. One thing that instantly caught my eye was the big clock behind the bar with a sign under it that reads “Correct Time.” Naturally, it was not correct at all. I was hoping the bartender had some funny story or long-running pub legend behind it, but he just shrugged. No explanation whatsoever. The mystery lives on. Overall, The Long Hall is a must-stop. Great atmosphere, great pints and a place that absolutely earns its reputation. Even without the backstory on the “Correct Time” clock, the visit was worth it.

Was told this was a ver traditional Irish pub with beautiful wood interior. And it was. Very nice but also crowded. But the crowd made it feel more intimate. You just have to work your way in.

This has been my favourite place in Dublin for a Guinness since I first entered the door at 19 years old, 21 years later and not a lot has changed except the price of a pint but the atmosphere is still the same. Classic Irish pub with over 250 years of history, Guinness is exceptional. Highly recommend.

Over the last few years my wonderful partner has been discovering his Irish roots and reconnecting with his Irish family. On a rainy afternoon in Dublin he was excited to share with me one of Dublins most iconic venues that has played its part in his recent odyssey. Upon entering it’s easy to understand why this historic boozer is a firm favourite with the locals and tourists alike. Obviously Guinness was our ‘tipple of choice’…( Like there’s any other when visiting a Dublin institution such as this! ) However, you have to understand when you order this national beverage in Dublin there are a few rules involved… NEVER drink from your pint until the nectar is settled and 100% black in colour. ALWAYS place your pint on a beer mat. - I got ‘schooled’ twice in a non verbal firm but friendly manner by the barman - Sláinte. The bar is very traditional, brass fittings, long case clocks, gloss paint on the walls and vintage branded paraphernalia returning you to the halcyon days of drinking - without the cigarette smoke. The place filled up quickly with locals, regulars and after work drinkers - a very pleasant time was spent but sadly after a couple of pints of the brilliant ‘black stuff’ we had to make our way back outside into the rain taking advantage of the complimentary umbrellas on offer at the door - which is a super nice touch and very useful. This old library may be better than even the Book of Kells. It’s like you’re walking through a Hollywood movie set. The books are beautiful as is all the beautiful dark woodwork. The old manuscripts are beautiful in the middle is cool. The big spinning globe is cool but is out of place. This is a must see in Dublin.

No Beamish! There is a pic from a couple years ago but they apparently switch out stouts. They had Clockwork, which was decent. I specifically came for Beamish (there are plenty bars in Dublin that serve it, was trying to see as many as possible).

When I say "food", I mean some of the best pours of Guinness in the Dublin area. Great place. Cool vibe. And some great people behind the bar there to help fix you up with the perfect pint or other liquid libation.

This is one of the best pubs in Dublin, loved by locales and tourists alike. It has a beautiful Victorian era interior that's inviting and warm. You feel welcomed the minute you walk in. The menu is delicious, with a large selection of Irish cuisine with fresh ingredients. Whatever you choose, you'll be satisfied. Their pours are some of the best I had and if you're visiting Dublin/Ireland for the first time, this is a great spot to try your first authentic pint of Guinness. The service is also great. I came at a slow hour and had a nice conversation with the bartender about all sorts of topics. He was very knowledgeable about the drinks and had good recommendations for food. If you're interested into Irish history, I also recommend this place for you. This was once a meeting house for Irish Nationals in the 19th century, where the IRB would discuss strategies to end British occupation over Ireland before Ireland became independent. Overall, it's a great place for anyone and I'd highly recommend coming here if you're visiting or if you're a locale.

A proper pub in the heart of Dublin. The Long Hall was towards the top of my list of places to check out during my brief visit here. It was within walking distance of a ton of restaurants and attractions so you might as well stop by and grab yourself a pint of Guinness. The place is popular so be prepared to stand or be content with barstool seating, although there is table seating in the back which looked super cozy. I was lucky enough to snag a seat at the bar and loved looking around at the victorian woodworking and vintage decor. I ordered a pint of Guinness which was poured efficiently and properly. Service was straightforward but kind. I've got to admit, I'm not a Guinness fan. It might have something to do with the fact that I never drink beer but when in Rome do as the Romans do. So when in Dublin, drink what the Irish drink, I suppose? I can't say I ordered another pint but I did stop into the restrooms on my way out and I was pleasantly surprised with how clean they were! Usually the bathrooms in bars in the U.S are total dumpster fires but this one was clearly being checked throughout the day. I'd definitely recommend stopping by The Long Hall if you're ever in Dublin!

Gotta say of all the places in Dublin that hype up their Irish coffee this place was definitely worth waiting till they opened up at 1pm on a rainy day. The coffee was smooth yet energetic for a vaycay vibe. Customers and staff here are very friendly and chill and just good vibes here all around. For the price of an Irish coffee it was fair as well

This was probably one of the nicest pubs I went to in Dublin! This has the vibe of a nice cocktail bar, but essentially everyone was drinking beer! I'd come back

Really great service. We sat at a table in the back and never wanted for a refill or another drink. We went becuse we heard they had good pours of Guiness and it was super close to out hotel. We would go again

This bar is one of the oldest in Dublin. Such a charming place. Definitely one you need to try while visiting.

This may be one of the most beautiful bars in Dublin.. and I went to many joints!! Walking in... huge bar with prob 30 stools, beautiful chandeliers complete with fancy carpeting in a bar??? It works and really makes the place stand out. Constantly packed and this is not a small place so plan accordingly! Service was great all things considered// stick with Guinness // talk later.

Traditional Irish pub. Crowded, noisy and fun. Pretty sure we were the only Americans (which was great). Jameson and Guinness of course - free flowing.

Fun is not welcome here. I used to live on Palace St (Dame St) and recently was in the Long Hall with a friend, twice, for catch-up drinks. The first night we had at least eight pints each. Grand time. Today, we had one drink and the manager, who we had not spoken with or interacted with, refused to serve us a second. The only thing I can think of is that, as we were seated right by the door, we were chatting to new customers as they waited for a seat. The (Tunisian?) guy serving us both nights is very nice; we tipped him both nights and were grateful to have someone so pleasant serving us. The "manager" should probably just be a bar man and have someone with cop on be the actual manager.

This is a classic pub with leather seats, an eclectic mix of chandeliers, an assortment of photos on the walls, tin ceilings, red carpeting. As the name states, this is one long, narrow 'hall' of a room. The bar takes up the front half of the room with seats both at the bar and across from it along the wall. The rear portion of the room is banquets, typical little round tables and stools. The pub offers a full bar. We ordered one beer, and tea for one. The bar woman sent us back to have a seat and brought out a small pot of brewed tea and the beer. From our vantage point we could see the entire room. There were only a few patrons scattered around the room when we visited early in the afternoon. Not as much tchotchke here as in other old style pubs but still with lots of personality.

On my short trip to Ireland I had limited time in Dublin so I wanted to try a highly recommended pub to get a pint of Guinness. This place was the highest recommend pub within close proximity of the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. I walked in and the place was packed; it was difficult to walk through the narrow area in front of the bar. There were no tables available but fortunately there was one spot with standing room only at the bar. Although the place was packed, I was acknowledged quickly and I ordered a pint of Guinness. I was glad that I did not receive my pint immediately because he let it settle before he topped it off and delivered it. It cost 5 Euros which is good compared to some other pubs. This place is a Victorian style pub and has been there for quite some time. I thought that it was cool that locals and tourists alike were in the place. I saw large groups of friends in the back and mostly couples at the bar and seated across from it. Despite it being so busy, the bartender was keeping up and keeping things moving. 4 stars!

The Long Hall is a charming Victorian style pub in Dublin that dates back to 1766. This Irish pub acquired its name from its long, narrow hallway snug that runs along the left hand side of the pub. Before 1951 only men were allowed in the bar; women were served drinks in the hallway. This was the second stop on our pub crawl in Dublin. The bar wasn't very crowded on the evening of our Sunday visit so we didn't have to wait in a line to place our order. We grabbed a window seat so we could people watch outside while enjoying our pints, but I think I spent most of our visit with my back to the window because there was so many beautiful features of the pub to gawk at. The most stunning feature at The Long Hall is the antique clock that forms an arch between bar and lounge area. If you are looking for a gorgeous historical pub in Dublin that serves a great pint of Guinness be sure to stop by The Long Hall!

I love this pub. It's so simple but gives you so much more and gives you a wonderful Dublin experience. We went to the Long Hall as it was featured in an episode of Anthony Bourdain's show The Layover as a place to visit while in Dublin. It's a small pub in the heart of Dublin but represents what a pub should be: no TVs, just good conversation and good pints. They carry many beers on tap and a collection of whiskey and other spirits. My husband had a pint of Galaway Hooker and Guinness (because for many people, that is what you do in Dublin) while I had a pint of O'Hara's Craft Beer and Smithwicks. We stuck to Irish beers because we wanted to drink what the locals drink. It was mid afternoon when we went. Not too busy but it slowly started picking up while we were there. The bartender was friendly and gave us great recommendations for places to eat in Dublin. The atmosphere is very relaxed; the bar itself is full of character. I am definitely glad we visited.

This place is victorian in look, and modern in service. The people working the bar were helpful and friendly. The pints were reasonably priced. We had the chance to talk to the people the worked there as they were not too terribly busy. They suggested whisky to us, told us their favorites, and poured us a few glasses. This place is the kind of pub you would imagine when someone says Irish Pub. Leather seats, chandeliers, tin ceilings, carpeting, long narrow hall, old fixtures, copper taps. I cant even imagine why this place didn't have a long line waiting to get in. Maybe we went at the perfect time (afternoon). Maybe it was an off day? Whatever the reason we were happy to only be 2 of the a handful of people in the space. It gave us the chance to converse with the patrons as well.

I've been here many times. To be honest it's my go to pub when I'm in Dublin. It's far enough from Temple Bar area that the prices are a lot cheaper but close enough to walk there from my hotel. I had my pint of Guinness and watched the Rugby match between Ireland and England. Ireland won, so the place went nuts and course I had a few more pints to celebrate. This place is called the Long Hall for a reason. It's a long hall with a limited seating space but it's really a cool place. When in Dublin come to the Long Hall.

The day I met my now husband we spent the night drinking in this pub. It was the best pint I've ever had, and was honestly the best place we visited the whole trip. Can't wait to make it back here someday!

The Long Hall has been around Dublin for a long time and will hopefully be around for the long haul aswell... Its one of those beautiful pubs that has probably always looked pretty similar to the way it does today inside. In an era where everything is slatted wooden floors or terribly boring tiles its a nice shift to stand on "a luverly birra carpet..." its like standing upon one of your grannys finest sponge cakes because you literally sink like the titanic into the soft depths of the ice cold bar taps choosing your tipple. But alas there can only be one here and its arthurs finest. The long hall is reknowned for a good pint of the black stuff. Tourists love it here but the barmen are modest. I overheard a guy ask whether it was the oldest pub in dublin and the Barman told him no that the title infact belongs to the brazen head. Its this sort of genuine charm that will ensure that a visit to this popular haunt will never get old even though the bar itself already has. Im taking away one point for the view of the outlet shop (closed down) across the street whilst perched in the window. Total eyesore. Still though hands down the best head in town, I shall attach a picture for your viewing pleasure!!

Cozy beautiful bar. The best pint of Guinness I have ever had. And in the taxi the next day, the driver said it truly is the best pint poured in the city, and said he would mentioned that place first if I had asked him for a reco. And he was the real deal!

As a tourist, I came here in search of an authentic, Irish bar (where the locals go). And was I pleased that this bar lived up to that expectation! Great selection of beer. Very loud and lively. I visited on a Friday night and there was barely any room to walk let alone find a table or comfortable standing space. But a crowd is a sign of a good bar? 4 stars because it was difficult to converse with the new people I just met. Had to awkwardly lean my head closer to be able to hear.

I like this place. I like it a lot. Firstly, it's obviously amazingly beautiful, both externally and internally. This really is a truly elegant old (and long as the name suggests!) bar on South Great George's Street. The owners obviously put a lot of money and effort into keeping the place spick and span and purty, and it's really paid off. Check out any of the photos accompanying it and you'll see. The other thing is, there are no fake 'ye old Ireland', 'check me out I'm an old man's pub,no honestly I've been here forever' signs all over the walls. This IS an old pub, the Victorian paraphernalia and decor is fully authentic - in fact the Long Hall is actually a listed building, which proves my point! There are muskets, old paintings, and ancient looking chandeliers, all crammed in together with lots of shiny brass, huge alcohol selection, and some 'old Dublin' characters. You'll get a great pint of Guinness here, guaranteed (another one to add to the list!), and the prices are pretty reasonable. Now the only thing is, this place gets rammed at the weekends. Another one that's a bit of a victim of it's own success. Having said that, if you get in there during the day, you'll be in luck. I was there last Saturday day time, and we were in the company of only three others, so pick your time wisely, and you'll be grand.

After a smashing soiree at the Science Gallery and a satisfying supper at Shebeen Chic, friends suggested we hit their local next. The Long Hall was absolutely heaving when we arrived but we managed to wedge ourselves in among the punters. This is an excellent place to experience real Dublin pub culture, preferably with a glass of Guinness and a shot of Jameson!

Victorian pub on George's Street. I've walked by here so many times and I've never visited. I'm very sorry I haven't visited before. This is a fab spot but it does get quite busy. There was quite a few tourists in there so we grabbed a space at the bar and propped it up for a drink or two. The taps for some of the beer are fab and I do like the old clock behind the bar. I chose Stonewell Cider. They have an absolute great selection behind the bar. Definitely worth a visit.

I do not know the reason, but this place is well-known to serve good Guinness. I could not tell the difference (that means they all tasted good to me!), but that was because I was already drunk? :o I don't know, but good times, good times...

There really is no where like a proper Dublin pub on an eve in the last run up to Christmas - but it cant be just any old pub, for a start it has to be, well, old. The Long Hall is suitably aged and slightly grotty and pretty much encapsulates everything a Dublin pub should be, this isn't a new place decorated to look the part, any discerning drinker can tell the difference, this is the real thing. We were in on Sat eve, the place so packed with revellers you couldn't get form any given point A to any other given point B without a serious squeeze and jostle - but it doesn't matter - everyone is in good form, understands that there will be the aforementioned squeezing, jostling and spilling and just gets on with it. Great for pretty much any eve the Long Hall comes into its own this time of year, go, have a pint and enjoy!

This place has been around since 1877, its reallyl been in for the long haul! ha ha im so funny! okay sorry, i wont make a stupid joke like that again! so seriously, this place is really old and you can tell because its got years of tradition and ambience and craic soaked into the walls and the building just exudes greatness when it comes to having a proper good drink! an interesting fact about this pub, women were not allowed drink in here until 1951, before then ladies had to sit in a hallway and get their drink through a little hatch.jeese, youd think they had cooties! maybe they did back then!

One of my favorite pubs in Dublin. Great service and friendly servers and bartenders. Also great spot to connect with the locals.

Historic, fun, and if you love people watching, this is your place. A friend, who lives in Dublin, suggested we try the Long Hall. We tried once, on a weekday early evening, and were not able to get in (a good sign I suppose). We returned during a non-prime hour and found two seats at the bar. Super friendly and attentive bar staff was a definite plus. Great old architecture, and a pleasure to tip a few at this historic bar.

The Long Hall is tip-top notch. Probably the best pub in Dublin, which is essentially the same thing as being the best pub in the known universe. No music, no tv, none of that oul malarkey, nothing to distract from pubs are really meant for: good converstion, and philosophising as to the state of the world. Fairly reasonably priced points, Beamish (always a plus in my book), and amazing interior and fittings: the Long Hall has been used as a location in a number of films, and it is easy to see why. Peerless.

Loved this spot. Truly an authentic feeling pub, mostly populated by locals. The decor of the bar was my favorite of all the pubs I've been in throughout Ireland. Good pour of Guinness and a nice selection of spirits as well.

"Wow Randy, isn't this neat?" "Sure is Barb," grinned Randy as he made his bottom more comfortable on his Great Outdoors yellow raincoat which draped over the bar-stool. They gazed happily around the bar as they sipped their pints like kids who just opened their Christmas presents. "Life is like lemon, zee lemon!" "Zee lemon did not have to deal with the oppressive urges of a minimalist structure zat has been bred upon us," argued the stunning German with perfect bone structure, I stared at her I know I did. But her face was so interesting as was their conversation. I love this place. We sat in front of our black and cream as the old-school barman delivered pints to the very different tables. The place just pulls out the best conversations and thoughts within. A place to be inspired or dissolve or both just like my incredible night last night. Thank you.

17:43:00. Friday. There's a newspaper on the bar. You are clearly the first person the barman has seen in hours and he's slumped on the bar, completely bored. He has memorized all the Crosaire clues and solved none. He looks up and asks. "Refreshing sea tears a soft piano" "You've lost me. Quiet night, eh?" 17:59:42. Friday. The temperature rises a degree. Anxiety in the country rises. The stock index drops a few points in every company with the exception of those which manufacture alcoholic drinks. 17:59:59. Friday. Ceremoniously, the barman stands to attention. Fresh-faced and enthusiastic; probably a military man. He finishes pouring your Guinness from the tabernackle. The blood of the working man. A million bells ring simultaneously as a thousand meetings are postponed. If you listen carefully, you can hear a low rumble. 18:00:00. Friday. You blink. Every office in the world is now empty. This pub now has a larger population than China. You hear the distinctive hissing of the Guinness tap. It reminds you of Niagara Falls. Of course, Niagara Falls has nothing on this -- neither in terms of the number of visitors, nor of the quantity or quality of liquid flow. Your eyes are opened. A keg runs empty. The barman goes to replace it. 18:03:00. Friday. The world is getting thirsty. A patron opens the entrance to the cellar. The barman is not there. Nobody can explain it. Your pint is empty. Time to move to another bar. 18:04:00. Friday. In Fagans, others usually now drink Juinness. Every session's usual stout.

My favorite pub in city centre Dublin (my other favorite Dublin pub is Kavanaghs). The Long Hall bills itself as a Victorian-Era pub, which, as far as I can tell, simply means that the pub dates back to the late 1800s and is committed to preserving the antiquated paraphernalia of this era, along with boasting dark wood, lots of brass around the bar and old taps. The end result: the Long Hall is staggeringly impressive. You know it's serious business when no less than ten Guinness pint glasses are lined up behind the bar, half-full, awaiting their top-off push. It was a Friday night around 8:30 pm and we experienced laser efficiency: we were targeted, one barman took our order, the other poured, a third took our money. Amidst this frantic business, a very peculiar phenomenon had taken hold of the packed-solid room: you could have a conversation. Could the grandeur at the bar be responsible for the reverential behavior of the patrons? I'm not sure. The place was so civilized, yet so crowded. Conversation on a Friday night, and so close to Temple Bar. Impossible, you say! No, it's here. Think velvet, copper & brass, old clocks, old lanterns, dark wooden panels, intricate chandeliers. And the perfect pint. May the Long Hall live on!

Great Dublin pub this, the best front of any pub in Dublin, check the pictures out. Inside its all wood and shiny light fittings. There are usually lots of people in this bar it is popular, so if you want to enjoy a quiet chat try it during the daytime. Very good pub.

It might not be very long, and it isn't much of a hall, but the Long Hall is more Dublin than James Joyce singing Raglan Road in Coppers. It's got all those ingredients that for some reason are essential for a great boozer. Stools that shouldn't be so comfy, decor that's gloomy without being depressing and service that makes a complete stranger feel like a life-long regular. Dublin's already got soe excellent old-man pubs, but this place stands head and zimmer-frame above the rest.

If Heaven is a place on earth, this pub is surely it. It is, without question, my favourite pub in the world. The pints of Guinness are pure perfection, and probably the cheapest in Dublin. Being that this pub is right in the middle of the city, this makes it even more pleasant. The barmen have been around a while too and are masters of their trade....as a real barman should be. If you want to have a great night out, and some exceptional pints, look no further. nowhere else in dublin comes close.............not even Mulligans!

As good as it gets does not even begin to do "the hall" justice. This pub is an establishment of such class as to be almost beyond description or review. There is a feeling of "knowing" when you walk into the hall on any given day, a sense that people just get this place, they undertsand the qualities that makes a good pub and it ticks all the right boxes. Vibrant yet calming, historic yet developing. An evening spent in The Long Hall gives an insight into what and who we Irish are, the "craic" is palpable and if ever a place could define what "the craic" actually is, then here it is! Generation after generation have passed through its doors, some of the staff I knew so well have retired or even passed and I think of them every time I visit. A different breed. True barmen! proud of their trade and always respectful of the history of the bar. Visitng the the long hall at least once is a must and if for some unfathomable reason you dont like it be safe in the knowledge the The Long Hall probably didn't think that much of you either.

One of the failings of the human form is the fact that 'tempus' continues to 'fugit' and there is bugger all that we can do about it! Or is there? After a long period of withdrawal from the city centres imbibing emporiums, the Luas has reacquainted me with some of the gems of my well spent youth. The most precious of those gems has to be the Long Hall. Fantastic pints, great staff, terrific atmosphere and authentic old world decor. If you are looking for a place that has managed to de-fugit tempus and make time stand still - there is no better place than the Long Hall...because change doesn't happen! Thanks be to God!

The Long Hall, ah... the Long Hall. It's a classic Dublin pub, its on the top of my list of Dublin pubs (as opposed to my list of Dublin bars). The decor is dated, but the reassuring old stylee pub dated decor. It also has those classic round table and stubby stools. You usually end up fitting about ten of them around the one round table as your group gets bigger and bigger. The staff are very attentive and traditional, they bring your pint to your table. The Guinness is good too. OK, so the gents smells a little too much that you can get the whiff at the tables nearest to it... and the ladies is tiny, with a rubbish hand dryer (those Dysons have really spoiled me)... but it still gets a five stars from me.

Holy sausage party. The bartender was a dear and quick with the drink orders. The bar was vintage and cozy....but (and maybe it was just the time of day or day for that matter) man o' man (no pun intended) besides myself, my two friends and another set of ladies I spotted huddled in the corner we were the ONLY women in the entire bar which was slammed. Hahahhaa....just a weird observation. Overall...nothing spectacular for me at least.

If there is someone in here drinking anything bar a pint of Guinness they are the the bleedn' Antichrist, if its beamish, F in stab them! as they have just insulted the complete alcohol consuming world! Zeus' ambrosia does not compare to the pint in here (second only to mulligans) ok slight exaggeration, but hurl abuse at someone drinking any other stout in here at least, especially one from cork ;) The long hall is exactly what it says it is on the tin, long(ish) and thin. chances are you will be cramped, between suits, students, artsy types and any other walk of life there is, its part of the experience. No food No T.V. No B.S. Grab your pint and enjoy life for a while.

Fabulous! Quiet, cozy and very friendly. The best staff which were friendly to us tourist, answering all our questions and giving whiskey advice. They don't offer food options but no matter. Their decor is all original 1776 which is gorgeous mahogany and antique clocks. Our favorite in Dublin!

Probably the most beautiful of all the pubs I visited in Dublin. It was a very fun and relaxing experience. It wasn't too crowded, which I appreciated. The atmosphere was very friendly and the service was great. I did not eat here, but I enjoyed some of their craft beers as well as a nice guiness.

Stopped in for a quick pint after dinner at a nearby restaurant. This pub has great ambiance...Victorian era with dark wood, impressive bar with antique clocks and paraphernalia decorating the place. When you approach the bar there are several Guiness pint glasses waiting for the final pour. They also have a good selection of other beer, but i say if in Ireland, why drink anything other than Guiness. A must visit if you are visiting Dublin.

Arguably the best bar in Dublin -- which when you consider the competition is saying something. As always the test is to go in at lunch time, on a cold day, pint of plain, soup, brown bread.

Ran into this place walking a little off the beaten path. Outstanding beer selection and great place and atmosphere. Huge bar selection. Didn't have any food.

Great institution on So Great George Street. Only drank there, but some serious Irish whiskeys and three taps of Guinness. Crowd was spilling out onto the sidewalk last night, more reasonable today, Sunday. Definitely recommend for drinks.
