On the Grid : The Looking Glass

"Sections are cleverly named and stenciled on the floor in this used book wonderland in South Oak Park. Small and tidy, you'll only get lost in your thoughts here. A knowledgeable staff, good selection and great prices make this bright, sunny spot a favorite for bibliophiles." - Julie Shumacher & Brett Burwell

Without giving too much away the experience was immersive! The space is smaller than one would expect but there is lots to see and interact with. Set your expectations to being present to really soak up the affects and atmosphere. A lot of interesting tiny details one could easily overlook. Love the little tree house! What a unique experience! I can't think of any other place like this that doesn't charge an arm and a leg. Grateful for the experience and the artists who out it together!

We attended the Fae Festival and there was a $5 add on to enter the Looking Glass because there would be art installations and performances. It seemed from images and descriptions that there were several areas to explore. There was one room, no performances, and a handful of details on the wall and ceiling with black-light paint details. Not an immersion experience, just a lounge with funky decor.

Went here for their Pride themed party and it was a blast! The DJ really knew how to turn it up. People were amazing, from the security staff to receptionist to the bartender. The art installations are also entertaining and fun to look at. Highly recommended for everyone looking to have fun 🏳️‍🌈🥳

This was amazing! My family and I had a wonderful time exploring this immersive art exhibit on our trip to Charlottesville. It was perfect for our 2, 4 and 6 year old and very entertaining for the adults as well. There were so many details to explore. There is a fun bar at the end where kids can paint or color and you can create a poem with clippings from books. We recommend this exhibit to anyone we know who goes to Charlottesville. We want to go back the next time we’re in town.

My 9 year old daughter and I had the pleasure of visiting The Looking Glass last week. Days later I’m still thinking about it. We went on a mind bending journey of light, color, texture, sound and delight! It is a warehouse space converted into an immersive (and sometimes) interactive art space. There are 7-8 different spaces which flow from one to another. The level of detail and imagination used by the artists is stunning. I cannot recommend this enough! Also, on the day we visited, there was a free kids pop up event at IX Park. My daughter painted and bopped along to funky music on a beautiful day.

This was such a fun place to find. Truly interactive and a fun place to wander and waste time! The colors, music, and things to feel appealed to every sense. There were things up high and down low to see and touch. I loved the spot that has been bags to sit on 💜 at the end was a nice chill bar to hang out and drinks at. Would def recommend!

Our visit to The Looking Glass Immersive Art Experience was enjoyable, but we couldn’t help but feel that it was a bit smaller than anticipated. There were seven of us—four adults, one child, and two infants (who were free). The entrance was welcoming, with a convenient coat-hanging area and a friendly staff that set a great first impression. Stepping inside was like entering another world. The initial visual impact was fantastic, and the immersive elements were truly creative. On the left side, there were cushions and pillows where the kids played, which added to the cozy, whimsical feel. However, when I turned on my light to find my son’s lost shoe under the pillows, I started to wonder about their cleanliness. The highlight for our kids was the gnome house, which was beautifully designed and fun to explore. They also enjoyed the interactive areas at the front and the final room, where they could paint, color, and explore a small sea-themed exhibit. The bar in the last room was a nice touch for adults. While the experience was visually stunning and unique, the space was quite small, and after the initial excitement wore off, there wasn’t much more to explore. Given the ticket price—$72 for four adults and one child—it felt a bit limited in value. Overall, it was a cool and creative space, and we had a good time, but the size left us wanting more. A solid four stars for the immersive design and friendly staff, but if the experience were a bit larger or offered more activities, it would have felt more worth the price.
