Whether you're looking for a top-notch Scottish brunch, a historical building and tour, or a quaint bed and breakfast on a weekend in Denver, The Lumber Baron Inn & Gardens has you covered, and then some.
My husband and I stopped in to try their new brunch menu and could hardly choose from all of the options, so we settled on three:
1. Oat Waffle - the malted waffles really intrigued me and for good reason. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, they soaked up the maple syrup and still held firm for each bite, also topped with plump fresh fruit and single-malt whipped cream.
2. Hadrian's Wall - a savory bread pudding containing eggs, lamb sausage, potato, greens and white cheddar, all baked and then seared. Wow. This is the only thing we didn't finish, but we were happy to bring it home.
3. Scotch Eggs - this was the hubby's choice and he really enjoyed it. A basket of rich lamb held delicate poached eggs. This came with a side of potatoes, though on the menu it said potato scone, but I'm guessing this is because it was their opening weekend.
Both 2 & 3 came with an arugula salad featuring yogurt dressing, shaved vegetables and flavor-packed dried berries (blueberries? We also saw something similar looking growing outside the window).
After our delicious brunch we took a quick tour of the building including all of the suites, the ballroom and a view of the gardens outside. Even though we live in Denver, this would be a really great weekend destination. Each room featured large beds, a luxurious bathtub, shower and other amenities. I don't imagine wanting to leave.
The staff was extremely friendly and welcome. We read on the back of the menu that new ownership began just this past January, and they are doing a fantastic job.
