I normally stay at properties right off of I-35 or 75, but I had some work to do at SMU, and was traveling with my dog, so I decided to give Hotel Lumen a try. The surrounding neighborhood of University Park is safe and well manicured, making for a pleasant place to take a run or to walk your dog. Nearby Snider Plaza offers numerous restaurants and some boutique shopping as well. And of course, SMU is right across the street. Everyone on Lumen's staff, but particularly Felipe and Joseph, demonstrated excellent hospitality. And the property had a clean, modern look, which made an outstanding first impression. I also appreciated the complimentary wine social (5-6pm) and coffee (6-9am) in the lobby.
Unfortunately, my first room, 210, was adjacent to a person who spent a lot of time talking. The walls were so thin that I was privy to every word. I turned on music and TV as a distraction, but I had a really hard time getting my work done. Though clean and well decorated, the room was a bit small. Walking between the bed and desk, I hit my shin on the foodboard of the bed on more than one occasion. And the TV was directly over the desk, so I really couldn't have it on in the background and work on my computer. The upscale bathroom made up for what the bedroom lacked though. The wll jets on the shower along with the Aveda toiletries definitely impressed me.
My second night, I asked to change rooms, because I really did need to work and wasn't able to do so with the person next door talking. Plus, I had to make business calls and figured if I could hear my neighbor, she could hear me. The front desk moved me to room 412, which was AMAZING. The suite featured a full sized fridge, living area, separate bedroom, bathroom with a soaking tub, and a balcony with a view of SMU as well as the Dallas skyline. My dog had a lot more room to run around, and I had plenty of room for my remote "office." I even entertained a couple of friends, which I definitely couldn't have done in my first room.
My meeting on Friday was scheduled till 12:30, and checkout is at noon, so I asked if I could keep the room for an extra hour. Regretably, that was not possible since the hotel was fully booked for later that day; however, Joseph offered not only to hold my bags at the front desk, but also to keep an eye on my dog until I returned. He even took the dog for a walk! A lot of hotels tolerate pets, but this one is truly pet friendly.
I am likely to stay here again, but I will probably request a quiet room next time. One more note--overnight parking is $13, but if you have a hybrid, parking is free.
