"How did it strike you on arrival?Located in the heart of the Park Cities, this hotel is well known for its location directly across the street from Southern Methodist University. Whether you are visiting people who live in the neighborhood or visiting a child who is studying at SMU, this is hand down the most convenient option. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Polo pack (as in the shirt not the sport). How was check in?A seamless check-in made for a stress-free afternoon by the pool before our dinner plans. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.I booked the Pool View King Premier and was pleased with its minimalist aesthetic and natural light. It looked out over the pool in a way that reminded me of some of hotel options in Palm Springs. Special shout out to the pillow-top bed that was made with Italian Sferra linens. So comfortable. Room service and food: Worth it?This hotel is serviced by the Front Room Tavern, located on the ground level of the hotel. It serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner and also has a full bar serving cocktails, wine, and beer. Although the atmosphere is great for all meals, you may choose to order via room service. There is also an in-room honor bar, should you be hungry at a time that the restaurant is not open. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?Our driver who drove us downtown via the complimentary car service. It was nice not having to spend money on an Uber and we appreciated his friendly attitude and willingness to help us load our stroller into the car. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The pool has an intimate vibe that makes you feel like you are relaxing in an ultra-exclusive spa. The private cabanas and lounge area had my imagination running wild as I imagined all of the chic happy hours that I could throw here. If you're flying in and visiting people who live in the Park Cities, it may be easier just to Uber from the airport and take advantage of the walkability of the hotel's location. There's also a complimentary bike program. (Plus, valet parking is $25 per day.) Fitness fanatics will enjoy 24-hour access to the hotel's gym in addition to complimentary fitness and cycle classes at Vital Fitness Studio in downtown Dallas, located at The Joule (The Lumen's sister property). This hotel pet-friendly and fully accessible for people with disabilities. The hotel offers ADA kits available upon request." - Diana Oates

Yelp
Point of the hotel was not accommodating, welcoming and dirty. Front desk staff were but our room was not ready as we checked in at 3:30. I have stayed at before and was pleased that it was geographically pleasing since my daughter attends SMU. This time the hotel was under were not notified ahead of time, no, elevators were dirty and with box covering. Workmen with plungers in their hand as we are going in the elevator. Our room, like a children's room, renovated to a circus room. Dark, dirty and dingy. There was no complementary water, I guess you have to drink city water. Unfortunately, the stay was horrible. It will be the last time we ever stay at The Lumen/graduate Hotel.

Yelp
This is an excellent option if you are on a weekend getaway, staycation or visiting SMU/Park Cities area!! Everything you need (shops, great restaurants) is a convenient quick walk away from your room. The pool is pristine and for the most part you get privacy since it is for hotel guests only. Stunning cabanas. Towel service, refreshments and they even have a cute coffee bar. I enjoyed dining for breakfast and dinner, great wine list! The customer service is top notch and any issues I had with my room were rectified so quickly I barely had time to blink. AC was ice cold inside my room, thank you for that seeing as we are in the dog days of summer! Check their website for specials. Valet parking only for a daily rate, it's worth it and I felt cared for and safe the entire trip. Thanks again for making my self care weekend one of the most memorable ones yet! I can't wait to return.

Yelp
nasty place, watch out for the sheets. I lifted my sheets and realized that they just put a topper on old filthy comforters

Yelp
I mistakenly booked my reservation for a Saturday night rather than the following Sunday. When I checked in it was brought to my attention and I paid more money to stay the Sunday night. When I asked about a refund for the night I hadn't stayed it was denied. They also charged $5 each for water bottles in the room which we were unaware of. Not that $5 is going to break the bank but it's the principal.

Yelp
The Lumen is convenient for parents or friends visiting SMU. Rooms adequate but dusty and dirty in corners of bed , room and bathroom. Wouldn't stay again .

Yelp
The place used to be nice until a Chicago hedge fund bought it and started cutting staff. Now things like the restaurant is chronically understaffed. They are across from a major university so people are going to stay there regardless of the service. But if service and quality are important, there are other places nearby.

Yelp
I was there for 4 nights. Plus - location is great to SMU. Ideal because I was there for work on campus. Negatives far outweigh - my room: king bed pushed against the wall. Fine for 1 but would have been an issue for 2. No hot water in the shower and took forever to get to warm. Pressure also low - like standing in the rain. No bath mat provided. Used bath towel. My view was back alley which faced an apartment building so curtains closed the whole time. I believe this used to be an apartment building that was converted to a hotel. In comparing notes with my team - all of the rooms were different. Restaurant was also not good. Fine for a drink but food was horrible. Tried it twice. No room service so I took to my room. Burger under cooked, soggy fries. Other night, got to my room and in my salad had no dressing. Already in my PJ's so just had to deal with it.

Yelp
My rating should really be more of a 2.5. My son chose the Lumen's front bar/restaurant for Saturday's dinner because there were 7 of us meeting to eat early before we walked over to the SMU football game. We arrived about 4:30, not realizing that real food was not served until 5:00. The options at 4:30 were 3 snack choices and drinks. We ordered drinks and were served about the time we could order dinner (yes, about 15-20 minutes to get 5 drinks). We ordered our food and waited, and waited, and waited. After about 40 minutes---cutting us close to making the kickoff at this point, we got our meal--sort of. Four of the six of us were served, by a different server than the one who took our order. Apparently our server disappeared. Two of the six food orders were never put in. Sad. The food was pretty tasty, but with service this bad it didn't seem to matter as much by the time we ate.

Yelp
Nice hotel, very friendly staff, good location. However, bedsheets were dirty as well as pillow cases! It looks like they change the top blanket but left dirty under sheets and pillow cases just flipped around! I was going to book an extra day here as I decided it was a nice location but left after discovering this. Will be returning this week to this area but will NOT be rebooking as I feel that cleaning needs major improvements!

Yelp
POOP IN MY "CLEAN" TOWELS! There's too many bad things that has happened in this past 3 weeks in this hotel. The day I arrived at night. My bad wasn't made. It was literally the cover on top of most likely not clean bed sheets. I called reception and they couldn't care less. Definitely no apology. After about a week in this hotel (I was there for work) I get out of the shower grab a "clean towel" that was beautifully folded I start drying myself turned the towel and POOP AND STAINS all over the towel. I took a shower again and dried myself with another towel that looked clean. I requested to see the manager and sent an email to the hotel. No one talked to me until after 3-4 days that I kept asking about it. The manager blamed it on her laundry service and couldn't care less about what I went through. After a few more days. I had to shower with cold water for 4 days straight. And my room was never clean. They would just drop towels and sometimes doing my bed. A LITTLE COMPENSATION? SOMETHING? Not even free coffee or comping my $70 USD food ticket. They brag about being a 4 star hotel? LMAO! The only amazing thing about this hotel is OLIVIA she's the bartender of the hotel she's a sweetheart and she cares.

Anthony S.

Yelp
Valet was understaffed but working hard Expect to wheel your own luggage if you need a cart. The room and hallways were clean No USB ports for chargers Tub did not have drain plug so we couldn't use it. When we asked for one they brought one that did not fit. Swimming pool was dirty and had mold spots at the bottom of the pool that looked like rust spots. Breakfast restaurant floor was unclean and service was understaffed However service people worked hard and were kind. Food was Excellent.

Julie H.

Yelp
The staff did their very best to correct all the issues with the 2 different rooms we purchased. The 1st was a suite for a few days but I use the term, 'suite' very loosely'! Tub didn't drain, no room service, no water or vending machine. Not one thing luxury about this suite! Moved to the 2nd room and it was not much better. Failed to clean and service room for two days. Begged for towels and the new Sinks are so small you cannot even fill a glass w water! Staff tried but there were short staffed. Restaurant is not good but the waiter very friendly. Needs lots of work and if this is their normal then they need to drastically lower the price.

Yelp
Oh good grief! This hotel is awful. The problems are too many to list. Let me just say PLEASE don't waste your money on this dumpy place. Motel 6 is a much better bet. Restaurant is Denny's quality at best. Outrageous for them to charge $650 plus for their best(?) room. The moment we walked into this "suite", you can smell the dirty linens. The Health Department should absolutely check this place out.

Yelp
Walked into the bar and was sadden to hear that my favorite bartender Dominic did not work there anymore. Best staff they have had in a long time

Yelp
We have been to this hotel twice before. I guess ownership has changed since the last time to some company called Graduate Hotels. This was one of the worst hotel experiences we have had. Starting with the gentleman at the front desk on check in. Poor attitude and not helpful. Then we get to room and the entire 4th floor hallways smells of marijuana - the room was worse. The cleanliness of the room was bad. The room I selected did not have a fridge and was suppose to have a tub and did not. The fridge was gross and had stains in it. The toilet seat was left soaking wet. The shower has peeling on the ceiling. There is a giant brown/yellow stain next to the bed. The worst part is the distinct and current smell of marijuana throughout. We loved the Lumen but it is in bad shape and we had a terrible experience. Will not be coming back.

Yelp
So after spending a few days here at the Hotel Lumen, I must say that I was blown away by the service and hospitality. When you're traveling, either for work or pleasure, it's always nice to find a place where you can feel more like a resident/guest and not simply a patron whose paid for their services. Upon arrival I was immediately greeted from the valet and asked if I needed service. It also didn't help as I was pulling a total guy move and trying to carry all my luggage at once. Upon defeat I told them yes and they gladly took my luggage in. I had arrived a few hours earlier than expected and had mentioned to them that I was aware of their standard check-in time. Well behold the first sign of amazing customer service... they actually let me grab my room within an hour upon arrival! They stated that they would do their best to let me get into my room and offered me to utilize the pool and they would hold onto my luggage. Of course like a true foodie, I opted for their restaurant which was quite amazing for breakfast and now I'm obsessed with their amazing French Toast they serve. That is a review on it's own though which I will soon upload. Once I arrived inside my room I was very pleased with the modern art and aesthetic. Plus that headboard was something else. My room was on the fourth floor and had a patio overlooking the SMU/Highland area. I personally loved how modern and clean this hotel was. Whenever I'm back in town I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Evidently we got off on the wrong foot with the valet. We pulled into the driveway the wrong way, apologized to the valet who was quick to make it known that we were ignorant despite our apologies. Mind you there was no one else pulling in or out. After having a quick bite, I waited my turn for the valet to take my ticket. They were relatively busy due to a holiday party and after waiting for a bit, he took the customer's ticket behind me. I guess it's possible that it wasn't deliberate but the people behind me had literally just walked out the door. He pulled my car up and before I rounded the front of the car, he said "your welcome" and walked off. My husband gave him a tip when he passed by. Not sure if the valet was having a bad day, needs additional training or simply hates his job but it was totally unnecessary. I don't post often, I don't believe that the customer is always right and I'm not a Karen but the owner of Lumen might want to reevaluate their valet contract.

Yelp
Everyone was very accommodating in this hotel. Very clean and the location is great. Close enough to downtown and far enough to have a peaceful time with your family and friends. Everything is close by. My kids absolutely loved this hotel. Will definitely come back !!!!

Yelp
I'm Marriott Platinum, so I know my way around hotels, and this Kimpton has some of the best customer service I've ever seen. It is my birthday and they sent up a bottle of proseco , a tiramisu, a nice card, and a bottle of water. Any one of those things would have been nice, but all together spell a good night! Also it is a very hip and trendy hotel, with a great location across the street from Smu. I will be using more Kimpton's for my non business needs.

Yelp
Stayed here New Years Eve. Pros- close to lower Greenville Very Pet friendly. Cons- customer service was just average at check in and durning their "happy hour" I think that guy working the front desk durning that time didn't want to be at work. Unfriendly and not very helpful. We sat at the bar before heading out to grab some drinks...once we ordered drinks, they took forever to get to the table. The bar tender did comp is 2 drinks for the extremely long wait times but overall, not the type of service I'd expect for the amount of money we spent here. As for the amount of money that we spent, I feel as service and amenities were subpar.

Yelp
This hotel is amazing. I've travelled to many places and stayed at different resorts and this place has just superseded them all. Great customer service, great restaurant/bar downstairs, great happy hour and most importantly great room. Hotel Lumen is one step ahead of you and always anticipates the customers needs. I arrived from my day to find my bed ready for sleep and slippers! I will be coming back and highly recommend this wonderful experience.

Yelp
We dined at The Lumen on Thanksgiving Day, 2016, and had a simply wonderful Thanksgiving buffet dinner. So, when it was time to book our table for Thanksgiving 2017, we phoned The Lumen: I asked if they would be hosting the buffet again this year. "Yes, m'mam!" I was told. We arrived at the appointed time today and walked to the pool area where the dinner had been set up last year, and the space was deserted! When we asked where Thanksgiving Buffet was this year, we were escorted to The Lumen's small coffee shop, seated in a booth, and handed a three course menu, priced at $46 per person...plus gratuity! We saw what was coming out of the kitchen, and it was very small, very unappetizing, unappealing, unfestive plates. We immediately got up and walked out. We were told hotel's under new management: they didn't want to spend the money this year to do a nice buffet. Note to "new management" of The Lumen: your hotel is in Highland Park, where MUCH MORE is expected for $50 than a blue plate special, especially on Thanksgiving. You lied to us, and you won't get a second chance to earn our business. We're never coming back, and we will tell a number of people about our experience, including those reading this Yelp review. Was it really worth cheaping out on your buffet this year?

Vincent G.

Yelp
Great hotel and convenient to everything. My issue is their complete lack of enforcement of their posted mask policy. During graduation weekend at SMU large groups of parents and students were allowed to congregate in the lobby and on the elevators without a mask. Unfair to those of us who took them at their word before booking. Dallas has been struggling with its COVID numbers. Doesn't seem too much to ask for the hotel to comply with its own policy..

Yelp
I normally stay at properties right off of I-35 or 75, but I had some work to do at SMU, and was traveling with my dog, so I decided to give Hotel Lumen a try. The surrounding neighborhood of University Park is safe and well manicured, making for a pleasant place to take a run or to walk your dog. Nearby Snider Plaza offers numerous restaurants and some boutique shopping as well. And of course, SMU is right across the street. Everyone on Lumen's staff, but particularly Felipe and Joseph, demonstrated excellent hospitality. And the property had a clean, modern look, which made an outstanding first impression. I also appreciated the complimentary wine social (5-6pm) and coffee (6-9am) in the lobby. Unfortunately, my first room, 210, was adjacent to a person who spent a lot of time talking. The walls were so thin that I was privy to every word. I turned on music and TV as a distraction, but I had a really hard time getting my work done. Though clean and well decorated, the room was a bit small. Walking between the bed and desk, I hit my shin on the foodboard of the bed on more than one occasion. And the TV was directly over the desk, so I really couldn't have it on in the background and work on my computer. The upscale bathroom made up for what the bedroom lacked though. The wll jets on the shower along with the Aveda toiletries definitely impressed me. My second night, I asked to change rooms, because I really did need to work and wasn't able to do so with the person next door talking. Plus, I had to make business calls and figured if I could hear my neighbor, she could hear me. The front desk moved me to room 412, which was AMAZING. The suite featured a full sized fridge, living area, separate bedroom, bathroom with a soaking tub, and a balcony with a view of SMU as well as the Dallas skyline. My dog had a lot more room to run around, and I had plenty of room for my remote "office." I even entertained a couple of friends, which I definitely couldn't have done in my first room. My meeting on Friday was scheduled till 12:30, and checkout is at noon, so I asked if I could keep the room for an extra hour. Regretably, that was not possible since the hotel was fully booked for later that day; however, Joseph offered not only to hold my bags at the front desk, but also to keep an eye on my dog until I returned. He even took the dog for a walk! A lot of hotels tolerate pets, but this one is truly pet friendly. I am likely to stay here again, but I will probably request a quiet room next time. One more note--overnight parking is $13, but if you have a hybrid, parking is free.

Yelp
Another Kimpton Hotel to love. All dogs are welcomed (no fee/deposit), coffee/tea bar in the a.m., wine happy hour in the lobby, free Wi-Fi, staff that's your bff... This is a quaint, four-story hotel, however it still has a restaurant inside. The rate on this particular night was $169, however hotels.com had a cheaper rate of $139. I'd start there and compare. Unfortunately this time, the Wi-Fi was unbelievably slow (ahem, non-existent), and I had zero cell reception in my room (T-Mobile peeps, don't book room 303). But they offered to switch my room or bring in an Ethernet cord. I ended up getting into my room too late and exhausted to do work, so I declined both. But the upside? My bed was SO comfortable, I slept through two alarms and woke up just one minute before my flight was to take off. Oops. Thank goodness for SW stand-by.

Yelp
I was not an overnight guest, but simply a day guest and it made me want to be an overnight guest someday soon! A friend, accompanying Manny the Frenchie, was visiting from SoCal and staying at Hotel Lumen, so we grabbed lunch and hung out in the lobby. During our three hour "hang out" the staff was over-the-top welcoming and kind. I forgot to mention I had my 10.5 month old son with me and he was smitten with the staff. Robin and the manager (sorry I forgot his name) were spectacular! Both made us feel at home and Robin even gave my son a toy. He was more than happy to give her a hug and snuggles before we left. From the valet staff, to the front desk staff, the manager, and even other guests, everyone was incredibly kind. Genuinely kind, not fake "I work here so I have to be nice" kind. I would highly recommend the Lumen to ANYONE! The manager began setting up for their regular happy hour while we were there and because of the Oscars on TV he literally rolled out a red carpet, brewed up some warm apple cider (it was raining out), poured the Proseco, and had the Oscar pre-show on TV in the lobby. Guests began coming down to hang out and watch. It was a great touch and impressive service.

Mark L.

Yelp
I've stayed here many times and it's going downhill fast. Front desk staff is incompetent or asleep, bar closes at 11pm on Fr night and rooms need paint. Will find a new Dallas spot.
google avatar

Amanda U.

Yelp
Stayed here just after New Year's while attending a job interview nearby. Not only was I upgraded without asking, but the manager was kind enough to give me a late checkout so that I could change and finish packing after I got back from my interview. The front desk agent and manager (the FDA was especially sweet. I cannot recall her name but she is studying speech pathology to open her own Translation company for the deaf. Go for it, Sweetie!) were amazing. I don't have a single bad thing to say about the Lumen, honestly. For the location, the service, and the comfort, it was worth every penny. I've already recommended it to some family and friends who will be in the area soon. Highly recommend!

Dani Y.

Yelp
Don't bother coming here if you want something as simple as water.. or customer service. There's no water in the room.. so when we called to see if we could purchase some we were told they don't have any... They don't have water? In a hotel? That has a restaurant? No other explanation, just nope can't help you. This place is very avg and not worth your time or money especially with so many great hotels around. Pass.
google avatar

Elisabeth S.

Yelp
Really had hoped for better. The location is ideal, right across from SMU. Unfortunately they know that and drop the ball on customer service. All kinds of snafus on communication between different staff members. Got treated pretty rudely by Mara, a reservationist who at one point asked, "have you ever stayed at any hotels?" Valet guys were on the hustle with getting our car promptly. Rooms are medium.
google avatar

Erik L.

Yelp
This a great hotel. They only been open for 4 years, but they stay true to the Kimpton brand with beautiful rooms and impeccable service. My wife and I stayed here for our first anniversary and were very pleased. We were surprised to find the staff had also dropped of a bottle of prosecco in our room while we were at dinner with a nice handwritten note by the management. We would absolutely stay here again.
google avatar

Yelp
So this place is awful. I have never stayed at such a dumpy place. The entire hotel was dirty. I knew the moment that I walked into the lobby that my stay wasn't going to be a good one, as the doors were covered in fingerprints. Hotel looks like they went to Walmart and bought furnishings. It's a Motel 6 pretending to be an Omni. Service not par. Hallway smelled of sour wet carpet and my room was more like a dungeon, than a hotel room. View was of a concrete wall with shutters that wouldn't stay open. The air unit was loud and old, room took awhile to cool down. Mini bar in room empty, and the refrigerator didn't keep items cold. Bed was okay, pillows were nice. Shower was nice, hence the 1 star. Parking is non existent and we had to wait for the front desk worker to leave for the night in order to have a place to park. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else!
google avatar

Kate D.

Yelp
Wow - first of all if you go to the restaurant in the hotel, please ask for John.... he is incredible!! The food was unbelievable but John truly made our experience one we will never forget. Thank you, John!! Second, the hotel is awesome. Great place for a weekend getaway or a quick one night staycation.
google avatar

Yelp
Noisiest hotel ever The loudest oldest air conditioning system known to man. Plumbing is outdated and inadequate. This hotel is horrible. Do yourself a favor and upgrade yourself to a motel 6. This is no longer a Kimpton Do disregard all former reviews when it was As of 2017 it's a crummmmmmmy hotel!

Yelp
Had a quick overnight stay while on the road! The hotel lobby and pool area were dangerously gorgeous. The hip furniture and decor added to the modern yet eclectic flair of the establishment. The pool is one of those that are not built for swimming laps but one more suited for lounging in your ridiculously priced designer swimwear. Service here is amazing! Front desk attendant tended to all our questions politely and humorously with aplomb! She suggested the complimentary morning tea and coffee service since she knew we were just passing through. The luxury suite had a poolside balcony that was a plus. That night we rocked out to the Girls Night Out party music they had going on at the roof terrace. Beware valet parking only available.

Yelp
I travel a lot and stay at a lot of Kimpton hotels and this one is as good as they get. The rooms are spacious, clean, artful, and comfortable. The Grand Lux suite (room 350) is amazing - one of the best rooms I have stayed in anywhere. But it is the people here that really sets this hotel far ahead of the pack. Special shout out to Juanita and Justin - they have customer service dialed in on a level that very few can match. Once informed it was our anniversary there was a bottle of champagne delivered to our room. We were greeted by smiles and our name every time we walked in the front door. Just outstanding customer service by everyone during our stay. Fastest valet on earth, really spectacularly great onsite restaurant that served THE best brunch I have ever had. Fast, friendly room service, what did i miss? Oh yeah, take the elevator to the 4th floor for a nice relaxing surprise. I love the art work all around this hotel - it is unique and very cool. Industrious even... ;-) I really cannot say enough great things about this place - Thanks Hotel Lumen, for making our trip (thanksgiving and our anniversary) an extremely memorable one. Cheers!!!!

Yelp
Kimpton: I have been a huge fan of Kimpton for years now. The brand offers exceptional, personalized service in unique boutique style hotels. Location: Much like Virginia, Delaware, and I'm sure a few other locations "North" is where you want to be and that's true of Dallas, too. If you've never been to Dallas this hotel is in the Highland Park neighborhood of North Dallas. It's one of the wealthiest/safest/prettiest neighborhoods in all of Dallas. The hotel is directly across from SMU campus and a quick walk to the football stadium. There is a Starbucks down the street about .7 mile! Any boutique you could imagine (not kidding hello Giuseppe and Christian Louboutin!) are within 2 miles. The Katy Running Trail is a well maintained paved running/biking trail, the hotel is a short 1 mile run to an entrance. Your run/walk to the actual trail does have sidewalks and pedestrian signals for crossing. Running in the Highland Park neighborhood can be VERY dark and a bit daunting unless you have lights to accompany you, but nonetheless it's a very safe neighborhood. The trail is beautiful and if you're into this sort of thing I highly recommend it. *Ask for helmets/bike locks at valet* sign a waiver with the front desk and borrow a Kimpton bike!! Northpark mall is within 3 miles of the hotel, which means Kimpton's complimentary black SUV will drop you off and pick you up. These guys were great and saved me many a Uber rides to Starbucks, the mall, and McKinney Trolley area. Rooms: I stayed in a Spectra Studio Suite with one king bed on the third floor. There's floor to ceiling window but there is no balcony and the ceilings are pretty low. I recommend checking out a higher room, and possibly bigger than that. There was a couch, coffee table, desk, bed, and bathroom but I wasn't a fan. I did like that the bathroom had a separate door/mini room for the toilet to allow two people to (comfortably??) use the bathroom at once. However I don't like that I was forced to use the bathroom for my clothes, the closets are all in the bathroom. Like I said, I recommend checking out some other layouts. Service: I've stayed in many hotels and no one has been as exceptional as Kimpton. We had a few snafus with the front desk here. The gentleman checking us in asked if we were married and asked if I was stationed here. Both are wildly inappropriate in my opinion and he was making some pretty strong assumptions with both of the questions. This was a snafu and we refused to let it affect our trip, but I did my best to avoid this particular member of the staff for the remainder of the trip. When my boyfriend asked about rental cars they listed off places with exotic/performance car rentals, he laughed and we liked the way they were thinking. Ultimately he did find a very nice car with their help. There were bottled waters, champagne on ice, and pink flowers completed with a signed birthday card delivered to my room. It was not my birthday, but it was my birthday month and Kimpton goes above and beyond to recognize these sort of things. I left my birthday card behind on accident and I'm bummed about it :( Hotel: We stayed in April, the rooftop was occupied/not available for our entire trip. The pool was not available/closed/ covered by an unsightly wedding reception set up for our entire trip. I just feel like some sort of message should be conveyed to guests about pool hours and days of operation, as well as rooftop lounges, since these both may be huge reasons why your hotel was chosen for a trip. Restaurant: We enjoyed this restaurant on several occasions. I wish they had a buffet brunch option but when we did eat there the service and food were great! To get to some great steakhouses we took short $20 Uber trips! uber blacks and SUVs were always readily available here. Check them out!

Yelp
Unhappy at check-in, but hopeful that accommodations will be made and I can revise review. Checked in before checkout on a Friday, but was told the only rooms left were king beds--unacceptable bc I am sharing the room. I asked about rollaway beds-"all gone." How could this already be at the start of a weekend? The room also has a loud pulsing AC and the maintenance employee said he would see about another room, but still waiting. Unresponsive front desk. Frustrating bc I have stayed here before and had an entirely different experience.

Yelp
Tv/cable didn't work. Dirty room. Worn furniture and carpet. This is basically a motel- without a working TV.

Yelp
Amazing hotel, have travelled all around the US for the past 5 weeks and this has by far been our favourite hotel. The restaurant/ bar downstairs is also really great, the staff throughout the whole place are friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and clean and the room service team were happy to make up our room at any time of the day as our schedule was all over the place. Comfy pillows & the curtains really block out the light - so relaxing and homely feeling! By far the nicest hotel in Dallas & in a beautiful neighbourhood. Couldn't recommend more!!

Yelp
What is wrong with this place? My husband and I are currently staying at the lumen and a few strange and unfortunate things have happened. The front desk people are nice enough but that's the extent of it. Our room doesn't have a window. At $250/night I feel like this should be a choice or a cheaper option. The host at the restaurant/bar (the only place to hang out besides the lobby) is incredibly rude. I feel as though I'm not even a guest here. It was 3pm and I went down to have a cup of tea while my husband was resting. There were all of 5 people in the restaurant and no host in sight so I walked in and sat at a table. Shortly after doing so, a very rude man walked up and, accusing, said what are you doing? Are you by yourself? You can't sit here. I calming (mostly in shock) said oh I'm sorry I didn't see anyone there. He was so flummoxed by the situation you would have though I walked into a packed restaurant at 8pm not an empty bar in a half empty hotel at 3pm. He tired to tell me I had to move to the bar and then, seeing my face of utter shock, just said fine you can sit here and walked away. If there were a coffee shop close by and it weren't snowing, I would leave. Instead I guess I'll just sit here uncomfortably, feeling pretty damn unwelcome at this so-called "luxury hotel."

Yelp
I've always been a fan of the Kimpton hotel group having stayed at many of their properties across the country, especially in San Francisco when I virtually lived at several of their hotels while I was working/living in SF. The Lumen is an honest reflection of what you'd expect from a boutique hotel chain like Kimpton. I first stayed at the Lumen when I was moving to Dallas and was looking for homes. Kimpton had renovated an older hotel and did a great job converting it into a modern establishment. The front staff and valet are very efficient and friendly. The standard rooms and the suites are all great. The Lumen features Aveda bath amentities, comfy colorful couches, flat screen TVs, and clean, but hip modern designs in their rooms. The suites offer up a lot of space. With a top floor balcony and near full size kitchen area (no stove), this would be the perfect place to host a private party. My only complaint was that on my last stay there were several cockroaches that made a guest appearance in my suite. That was the first time I came face to face with Texas cockroaches and they are huge! They're not joking when they say everything is bigger in Texas. Aside from that one bizarre incident, I was pleased with the hotel. It's in a great location. It's close enough to downtown, Knox Henderson, etc., but just far enough away so you can enjoy peace and quiet. It's right across from SMU so if you're visiting friends or family this is the ideal location. Social, the restaurant downstairs also serves great food.

Yelp
We are big Kimpton fans, and had stayed at the Palomar several times before it was taken over by Hilton. So naturally on our next trip, we chose to stay at the Lumen. I really liked the hotel. The lobby was spacious, comfortable, and colorful, with lots of seating and a view of the pool. The fact that we arrived right at wine hour might have colored my favorable first impression, however. What's that? Oh, you didn't know Kimptons serve complimentary wine from 5-6pm every - that's every - evening? Well, now you do! Another plus is that there is plenty of parking as you pull up to the hotel - it's very easy to find a spot and wait for the valet if it's busy. (Yes, like all big city upscale hotels, valet is mandatory. Just come to expect that and your life will be easier. Or search for packages, as there are often special rates with paid parking) The room itself was spacious, and the bathroom was very modern and beautiful. In fact, we are in desperate need of a bathroom refresh, and I think we are going to copy the sink and faucet from the bathroom! The water pressure in the shower was good - as much as I like green initiatives (low flow shower heads) in hotels, I like being able to rinse conditioner out of my hair better. The neighborhood around the hotel was great (although there is some major road construction going on as of 7/2015). It could be that it was summer, so most SMU classes weren't in session, but the neighborhood was super quiet. There is a 7 Eleven a block away from the hotel, which is nice for grabbing beverages. We ate at Digg's Tacos also nearby, and it was yummy. Having walking distance amenities is always nice. The neighborhood is super affluent, as you'd expect being across from SMU. On the way to dinner, we saw a house that was so big and with so much stained glass that I thought it had to be a church! The Lumen pool is small, but also quiet. I am so not a fan of hotels that try to turn their pools into a scene...I just want to read and sip a cocktail poolside, not share it with a DJ and a hundred Jersey Shore wannabees (in other news, you damn kids get off my lawn!!!!). The Lumen pool is perfect for that. The have poolside drink service, along with loungers, umbrellas, and cabanas. It was no problem staking out a spot on a Saturday afternoon. It was a perfect pool experience for an old person such as myself. All and all, we had a great Dallas mini-break at the Lumen. I look forward to going back, and staying longer!

Yelp
This place is great! Hotel staff were very friendly, room was immaculate, location is great, and checking in/out was a breeze. I really liked the soap/shampoo/conditioner/body wash that was provided-it was great quality and smelled amazing. Our room also had a large walk in shower, and thick, luxurious, sparkling white towels. There's a bar connected to it, great place for happy hour!

Yelp
There's lots to like about the Hotel Lumen, another of the Kimpton hotel chain's reclamation projects, this time in University Park. It's a cute, mod and semi-upscale cousin to the reasonably nearby Palomar, and the relation is palpable and full of lots of Kimpton touches - delicate, ambient lighting along the hallways, super comfy beds (I quite literally had the best night's sleep I've ever had on the road here -- I was exhausted at the time, but still --), flat screens and other accessories you might expect if you've stayed at another Kimpton property. They do the complimentary wine happy hours in the lobby too. If the Lumen were analogous to anything (and if this were the SATs), I'd say that the Lumen is to the Palomar as the aLoft hotels are to the Ws -- more boutique, with enough familiar items that you feel a little upon initially entering like you've been there before. I was a little bummed that there wasn't an iron in the room (as I'd been bouncing around airports all week and my shirts reflected that fact), but there's also in fairness a list they keep in the bathroom of complimentary items available via the front desk, like steam cleaning and wrinkle free fixes. Also, my room looked out over a construction zone, so who knows what's coming around here. That said, when you spend lots of time in the room with your eyes shut, maybe these things are less important. The room rate was reasonable, the restaurant looked cool, and it's an affordable fare to the airport. I'll definitely have to try this place again when there's time to relax and explore a little more.

Yelp
If your going to visit Dallas stay at this place super clean fast service and a beautiful hotel. The best part is the shower it has multiple jets similar to a car wash lol it's a great way to stand and get a high pressure water message. Overall great place rooms are super clean with all amenities of a five star resort. Cheers

Yelp
This hotel was extremely frustrating. Valet only, per night parking fees plus valet tipping. For two nights and two cars we spent $100 to leave our cars. Our room was right across from an employee entrance and they were loud and obnoxious during work hours, starting very early in the morning. Room was tiny. While room service is typically expensive, this was over the top. We paid $50 for two salads and they were disgusting. Wine and beer also way over priced. Plus 20% plus service fee applied to bill. They block cell service and essentially force you to pay $12 for wifi. I only appreciated this hotel for allowing my dog to stay, but I couldn't even leave her in the room. Waste of money.

Yelp
Hotel Lumen is awesome! Probably the best hotel I've ever stayed in. The staff is so friendly and helpful. They made us feel so welcome. We brought our 3 year old daughter with us and the front desk even made a treat bag just for her! The hotel is beautiful; the pool area is perfect for relaxation. They even have wine happy hour! I can't wait to visit again!
