This Rooftop Bar in Lisbon, Portugal, Is Europe's Best

"Lumiares Hotel & Spa houses Lumi Rooftop and is known for giving old buildings makeovers. The hotel is a remodeled 18th-century palace that pays homage to the community's colors, patterns, and light. It is also behind the Vintage, another award-winning hotel nearby." - Ashia Rain Aubourg

The Lumiares Hotel & Spa, Bairro Alto, Lisbon - Explore & Book

"Black and white, old and new, day and night… It’s all about contrasts in The Lumiares, starting with the elegant lobby where striking monochrome tiles make a great first impression. Then there’s the fact that this 18th-century restored palace houses a collection of contemporary apartments. And the yin and yang of the trendy Bairro Alto neighbourhood: by day, tourists explore the cobblestoned backstreets while locals go about their daily business; by night, it transforms into one giant street party (don’t worry, triple-glazed windows mean you won’t hear a thing). Even the hotel’s name has a double meaning: ‘Lumiares’ because the building once belonged to Count Lumiares, but also a nod to the light-and-dark theme (referenced in the apartments’ hand-pressed typography posters). There’s so much to love here: the service is nothing short of impeccable, and the rooftop restaurant is as special as its castle views (and cocktails). There’s also a sweet spa on the ground floor. But what made us fall hard was the bespoke décor by local artisans in all 53 suites, from handspun tapestries to urban artworks. Despite its hip hotel status and international accolades, The Lumiares never forgets its Portuguese roots. Highs You’re in the heart of the Bairro Alto – a historic district with a bohemian soul. At night, pint-sized bars spill out onto the cobblestoned streetsLumi, the trendy rooftop restaurant, has spectacular city viewsOr self cater: each apartment has a fully equipped Smeg kitchen (including a fridge with complimentary soft drinks)Exceptionally friendly staff who send helpful pre-arrival info and take your number at check-in, so anything you need is just a WhatsApp awayWe loved the Portuguese designed décor and the cool cubic lighting installation in the central staircase Lows It's pricey but you get a lot of space for your moneyWindows in street-level apartments don’t open (for security reasons)Bathrooms, though stylish, with geometric tiles, are on the small sideMost apartments have high ceilings, however the building’s heritage means a few are partially sloped" - Clemmy Manzo

"It’s certainly not the only way to do Lisbon, but it’d be hard to resist. The Lumiares Hotel is an 18th-century mansion in the city’s elevated Bairro Alto district, one whose exterior splendor remains intact but whose interiors have been thoroughly renovated to make way for 53 luxurious suites and a beautiful little spa and fitness center. Even the entry-level studios come with kitchens, and the high-end suites gain not just space but spectacular views as well — though all guests partake equally in the panorama from the terrace at the Lumi Rooftop Bar and Restaurant." - Tablet Hotels

Cannot say enough great things about this charming hotel and amazing staff. We are loyal Bonvoy members but took a chance here and are so glad we did! From the time we made our reservation to the time we left, the hotel staff was responsive to all questions and extremely kind, helpful and attentive. They helped to arrange dinners, tours, transportation and even helped us to find a medical device for a member of our party. Breakfast and late day drinks at the Lumi rooftop were fantastic. The views there were amazing and service was top notch-all with kindness and a smile. The hotel is in a prime location in Bairro Alto, close to shops, restaurants and fun nightlife. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable for a family of 4. Special touch of lavender scented washcloths was appreciated after a long day. I wish the showers were larger, but even so, would definitely stay again. Thank you, Lumiares for a truly memorable stay in Lisbon!

The suite was tastefully decorated with locally-sourced items (so, sustainable too). Stepping into the comfortable and beautiful room after a day in the busy, crowded city was like a soothing balm. The windows and walls were effectively sound-proofed, so the room was blissfully quiet day and night; so important in Lisbon where the partying goes on all night. ||Throughout the entire stay, the hotel staff was helpful and friendly. We received a small gift every evening - a cookie, a scented towel - and a personal note upon arrival from the manager. ||The location cannot be beat - being in the heart of Bairro Alto but just off the main street so less crowded/noisy/busy. Within a one-mile radius are countless restaurants and bars. You can walk one block away to take a bus, or ride the historic Gloria electrico tram. Down the hill (about a mile) is the Tagus riverfront and Cais Sodre train station (going to Belem) or the Rossio train station (going to Sintra).||Breakfast included was delicious and plentiful. Starting the day on the rooftop overlooking Lisbon's historic hills was memorable!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights for our honeymoon. While there were some positives, I ultimately don’t think this was representative of a 5 star hotel experience, especially given the high price being charged. The pros: - Location: You’re in the heart of Bairro Alto, an area full of lovely shops, bars and restaurants. Although it can get loud at night, if you’re looking to be in the fun area of the city, this is a great location. - Spacious apartment style rooms: the rooms have a loft, a kitchenette and quite a lot of space, unusual for a city hotel. - The rooftop views are awesome and as guests you almost always have a spot saved for you. - Some staff members were super sweet! The cons: - Service: At the restaurant (during both breakfast and other times of the day), service isn’t attentive at all, even to the point of being rude. You need to make the same request multiple times and despite a lot of staff and not so many guests, it felt like I was bothering them every time I requested anything. - Breakfast: Pretty limited selection of food and very average tasting. Good coffee though. - sound-proofing: It gets LOUD in the rooms so if you’re a light sleeper maybe this isn’t for you. Our room faced right on to the street, and we could hear nearly every sound from both outside and inside the hotel which was a bit disturbing. - Lighting: Please put more lights in the room, it was literally dark. We had to keep sheer curtains drawn at all times since we were exposed to the street, and it never felt like there was enough light.

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Lumiares. They were extremely welcoming, starting with a complimentary pickup from the airport. Upon arrival, the room had a fridge stock with local beverages, with cold water replenished daily for free. Breakfast on the rooftop was fantastic both in terms of the food and the views. The service is relaxed. Our room was large and well appointed; definitely comfortable for a family of 4. It was situated in a great area, within a 10 minute walk to many of the top neighborhoods in the city. There’s two things to know: (1) The neighborhood is a “hot spot” of nightlife. The alleyways become restaurants and bars at night. While the hotel’s windows and soundproofing work well, if you’re a SUPER light sleeper, you may want to request a room facing away from the neighborhood. (2) The front desk service was a bit slow. With only two people, it seemed a bit small given the number of guests and rooms; anticipate a short wait.

We stayed at The Lumiares for the first four nights of our honeymoon, and the experience was nothing short of incredible. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed so warmly—it truly set the tone for our stay. The architecture of the hotel is stunning, with high ceilings throughout and beautifully designed spaces. Our room was both special and spacious, making it a perfect sanctuary during our trip. Breakfast deserves a special mention—it was genuinely the best I’ve ever had. Every morning, we enjoyed delicious food and what I can only describe as the best coffee in the world, all while taking in the most breathtaking views of the city. The staff went above and beyond, making us feel truly special and celebrated during our honeymoon. Their warmth and attentiveness added a personal touch we’ll never forget. We’re already planning to return for our anniversary. A full 5 stars across the board.

This is a lovely boutique hotel in the Bairro Alto area. Everyone was very accommodating and helpful! The rooftop bar has one of the best views of the city with delicious food and drinks. ||The only negative feature is it can be noisy at night because of its location near the bars and clubs. Other than that, we loved our 5 night stay!

This place was amazing. We stayed 2 nights in the 2 bedroom suite and I can't have any complaints. The rooms were very nice and the view from the porch was even better. That's all besides the fact that it's in a great location that you can walk to anything from. And to top it off the staff were helpful and nice. Overall, it was a great experience and would definitely recommend if you're looking for a nice stay in lisbon.

Google
The Lumiares Hotel is excellent by all means. From the first moment we arrived until the moment we left, we received a warm and personal service. The apartment, consisting of 2 bedrooms, a living room and a small kitchen was Luxurious, spotless clean, spacious and very comfortable. The breakfast is served at the rooftop, with stunning views of the city. The food is delicious, and you get a restaurant like treatment and choose what you prefer from a menu. You can also take whatever you want from the buffet. The location is one of the best in Lisbon. In the heart of the old center, close to dozens of restaurants, cafés and bars. To conclude - it is one of the best hotels we have ever been to, a real pleasure to stay there.

Yelp
This review is more so about the rooftop restaurant known as Lumi's. Our experience at Lumi's rooftop was nothing short of amazing! From the moment I started emailing them after I made the reservation because I wanted to inquire about a cake for my friends who were celebrating their birthdays, to when we finished our meal, the staff here did not miss a beat. Our reservation was at 9pm for 5 people on our last night in Lisboa. Our flight from Tenerife South was delayed so we had to push our reservation back. I emailed them and they swiftly responded letting me know that as long as we were there before 9:30pm, we were all set to go. We arrived at 9pm and were greeted by the lovely hostess at the door. She was also my point of contact regarding the cake they were making for my friends. Unfortunately, it was raining so we could not sit outside, but the inside of the restaurant was just as cozy and quaint. Our waitress came over with a complimentary glass of champagne for the table and took our drink orders. I opted for a mocktail and my friends got the mojito and sangria (I think). Now, it was time for food and here's what we got: - spicy chicken wings (7/10) -pica-cau (7/10) -portobello mushroom burger (10/10) -roasted octopus (9/10) -oxtail croquette (7.5/10) -spicy garlic king prawn (9/10) -crispy swordfish bao (10/10-- the kitchen closed and we begged the chef to make us another one. That's how good it was) So as you can see, we made sure to try everything on the menu, for the most part. The food was amazing, the service was impeccable, and the ambience was so inviting. Also, the cake they made for my friends was so cute and we got to share it with some other patrons in the restaurant. We had such an amazing time here that I'm going to make it a mission of mine to recommend this restaurant to everyone who is visiting Lisboa. P.S: Their prices are affordable!!

Yelp
Best rooftop, even better Mezcal Negroni made right, in the right glass and filled to the top with a big cube. We were there in Mid March, pretty cold and off season, so you will need a resy if headed there in the nicer months. You really can't see anything while seated, so maybe it is nice for sunset, but you are not really able to actually see the sunset..still, great vibe, excellent servers, good music and a wonderful breeze. Make this a stop for sure, an hour is fine.

Yelp
Genuinely excellent experience at The Lumiares. This was my first ever stay at a "small luxury hotel" and I really enjoyed it! Customer service was top notch even before I arrived with their helpful emails. Their staff responded quickly to any questions I had and upon arrival I felt welcome. I stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment style suite and it was extremely spacious, clean, chic, and comfortable. The kitchen comes with top notch amenities including Smeg appliances, a dishwasher, oven, and mini fridge. There is no microwave. Wine, beer, water, and select drinks are complimentary for first use (water is always free). The kitchen has a full set of pots, pans, silverware, plates, mugs, etc. so you are all set for cooking if you desire. The living room had a couch, chair, and TV with several channels and Smart TV capabilities. My only complaint is that the TV was pretty old and slow to respond to the remote. There's ample storage space in a hallway closet and the closet in the bedroom. The bedroom also has a TV. Slippers and robes are provided. The bathroom had several complimentary amenities like a sewing kit, shower cap, nail file, etc. and the towels were super soft. The soap provided smells exactly like Fruit Loops cereal!! Housekeeping came by in the evening to check and see if I needed anything which was very kind. The hotel was also able to arrange a shuttle to the airport for me in advance, which was excellent! Breakfast was included in my stay (double check your reservation) and it was upstairs at their rooftop restaurant called Lumi every morning. The views from the balcony are stunning, and I am glad I got to see it in the morning since the dinner time reservations were booked solid. The breakfast menu is really elaborate - you can order anything from the menu to be prepared fresh (like bacon and eggs or an açaí bowl or both!) and there is also a self-serve station with pastries, fruit, and juices. The staff were overall very nice. The elephant in the room is that the price per night is extremely high, although I'm not familiar with this level of hotel so it may be comparable to others of a similar caliber. It is not accessible for everyone, but if you are willing and able to splurge for a truly luxurious stay then I recommend! I only wish some of the spa treatments were complimentary (I was under the impression that they were not). It would also be nice if they had a pool/hot tub for guests. There is a gym. Great location! Right in the heart of the city and easy to walk anywhere from here. The last thing I'll say is that security is top notch. No one can enter the floors with guest rooms without a guest key. Even the door to get into the lobby from the back is locked at night unless you have a guest key. Enjoyed and I hope to be lucky enough to be able to afford to come back one day.

Yelp
What a beautiful way to start our trip in Lisbon!!! We loooooved our stay here! It's truly, Location! Location! Location! This place is conveniently located so close to all the major tourist spots, restaurants and stores. Hubby and I love to explore and found that Bairro Alto is the place to be! It was a little hard to find at first, even our driver had difficulty finding it because the front is located on a very busy street - Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara. So there's no place for them to stop or pull over. The hotel has another entrance at the back (2 entrances; hotel patrons have to use their keys for other door during after hours since they have a roof top bar). Tip: ask the cab driver to drop you to the side at the back in Rua do Diário de Notícias between Travessa da Boa Hora and Travessa da Agua da Flor. However we did appreciate the simple and unassuming design. Its next to other 5 star hotels so we knew we were in the right place but it does not scream for attention. Love how they kept the building's true form and how it blended in with the rest of buildings around it. We loved our stay here! Centrally located yet did not feel claustrophobic at all. It's close to the train station and conveniently located next to the Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara for those nice view of the city. You kinda forget that you're in a busy street. We arrived too early for check in so our room was not ready yet. We were prepared to just leave our stuff with concierge while we went to have breakfast & start exploring. I was ready to just freshen up a bit in their restroom however found their restroom too busy and a bit small for someone to change and freshen up. Thankfully, Mariana, was there to save our day!! She was astute enough to realize that we wanted to freshen up and change. So she led us to their spa area and let us use the bathrooms there which was so much bigger! I ended up taking a quick shower and really freshened up and changed into a better outfit and get ready for the day and our tour! The ladies room had a shower and sauna and with toiletry essentials like shampoo, conditioner and body wash. We loved our room! Our room felt like home away from home with its cozy one bedroom setup; it had a nice little kitchenette and living room. Moreover, the hotel has a nice rooftop restaurant and bar with great view of the city. I think the spa and restaurant are available not only to hotel guests but to the public preferably with reservation. Last but not the least, we commend all the staff in Lumiares. They were all so friendly and accommodating. Felt instantly welcomed here. Inés our server at breakfast started our day always on a right note. She was quick to anticipate our needs and was such a great hosts to all the guests. Overall, What a great respite from a long flight and amazing restful stay! Obrigada Lumiares!

Yelp
Spectacular accommodations for travelers wanting comfort, location, and service. Highly recommend adding breakfast to your package and you'll enjoy local treats and healthy food every morning on the rooftop terrace restaurant . I am still patting myself on the back for finding this hotel.

Yelp
What a gem! We had the most wonderful stay. Luxurious and beautiful with every detail thoughtfully designed to make the most of the space. Each comfortably sized room has a functional, full kitchen complete with lovely stoneware and cooking utensils, and is decorated with colorful Portuguese textiles. Perfectly located in Bairro Alto, making it very walkable to all of old town. The rooftop restaurant, with breathtaking views, and the luxurious spa add to the charm of the hotel. The best part of our stay though was the gracious and accommodating staff. They literally went out of their way to make sure we had a pleasant stay. We have fallen in love with Lisbon and this lovely hotel. We can't wait to stay again!

Yelp
We had a perfect stay @ the Lumiares Hotel in Lisbon. The rooms are spacious and immaculately clean, the staff were attentive and kind, and the location is ideal for getting around the city. They go the extra mile on service by checking in with you via WhatsApp during the stay to ask if there was anything we needed -- which was so nice and helpful! Tips: Hotel staff can arrange airport taxi for you upon arrival, just reach out. They also have free sauna and steam treatments available for hotel guests! Also, breakfast is not included in the core price fyi.

Yelp
Beautiful, small hotel with wonderful service and a delightful rooftop restaurant and bar. Staff was extremely helpful and quite accommodating. The rooftop bar has delightful views of the city both day and night. The view in the evening of the Bell tower and surrounding neighborhood is fabulous. Staff at the rooftop bar is very helpful yet unobtrusive. The location in the heart of the city is perfect. Many restaurants, nightlife, and shops are located right around the hotel. Rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. Temperature controls were intuitive and easy to use. In short I highly recommend The Lumiares hotel.

Yelp
This is my second favorite hotel in all the world. My first is the Villa D' Este on Lake Como, Italy, where we honeymooned. This isn't nearly as grand, and instead, this is modern and new, but to measure it against the Villa D' Este says a lot about this hotel! The hotel was formerly a palace, which they've just transformed into a contemporary, yet super comfortable hotel. The staircase is really the only original part remaining, and it's beautiful! The apartment itself doesn't feel palatial, but our 2-bedroom, 2-bath with living room and kitchen is pretty spacious. Have you ever checked out those brand new contemporary condos in the South of Market (SOMA) are in San Francisco? Well, this apartment feels just like those! The apartment itself isn't particularly as large as the Hotel Majestic we just left in Barcelona, but the decor, and the fact that it is only a year old are the real appeals for me. I just absolutely love the contemporary, but cozy decor. Simple, yet very tasteful. Just check out my photo of the SMEG'S! We decided on the 2-bedroom, so that Hubby can conduct his teleconferences at odd times with people from all over the world, without waking me up. For me, this was worth it. Also, as I've mentioned before, in my opinion, having separate bathrooms is pivotal for a happy marriage. The 2-bedroom comes with a living room and kitchen that is stocked with cooking utensils, and everything you'll need, should you care to make breakfast or a full blown dinner. Location is excellent. Just step outside the hotel, and there are restaurants and shops all over. I really like this part of Lisbon. If you go down the hill, you'll come across more touristy type of places. FYI - it only took about 15 minutes to walk to the Time Out Market. If you go up the hill, there are nicer upscale boutiques. A great combination of the two. We didn't even need to take the tram up the hill, and just walked it to and from. However, if you have mobility issues, walking to and from this area on the cobblestones might be very challenging. Because the hotel is located in the Bairro Alto, an area where there are many restaurants and bars, it can get a little noisy outside. It's about 2am now, and I can hear some noise, although our room is up high and the double paned windows help to muffle most of the noise. Had we been on a lower floor, though, I might be a little concerned. A slight downside is the spa/gym. The gym is open 24 hours, and the spa portion is only open until 9pm. However, when I went to use the spa, which was small, I had to go up and down the hall looking for someone. Also, the steam room never really got hot. I have a steam shower at home, and it gets steamier than what I experienced. All first-world problems. I get it, but frustrating nonetheless. What we really love is the spaciousness and homey feel this apartment provides. I'm sitting in the kitchen now, which by the way, has great lighting, as does the entire apartment, typing this review and feeling like I'm at home. Actually, I think I prefer this over our places! I'd return here in a heartbeat if I came back to Lisbon! No doubt!!

Yelp
This is a spectacular boutique hotel, perfectly located in the Barrio Alta neighborhood. Service is outstanding, our check-in and check-out experience was great, and the Manager called during our visit to ask if there was anything they could do to improve our experience. Our room was a 1-bedroom suite and was perfectly sized and appointed. Everything in the mini-bar was complimentary! While in the noisy Barrio Alta neighborhood, the room was whisper quiet. There is a lovely coffee shop and Neapolitan Pizza restaurant on the ground floor. Room had a Nespresso coffee maker and full kitchenette. Lovely restaurant and with outdoor deck on the roof. Honestly one of the nicest hotel experiences we have ever had, and we have stayed in some great hotels!

Yelp
Our stay at the Lumiares was perfect! Every detail of the experience at the hotel is intentionally curated. Our apartment was beautiful, and came with nice touches such as your own coffee machine/pods and a fridge stocked with wine and beer from the region. There is also an excellent rooftop restaurant, and upon check-in we received a voucher for a bottle of white wine! It was excellent, and we enjoyed it with our lunch as we looked out over the city. The spa and other amenities are also fantastic. And every single member of the hotel staff we interacted with was extremely helpful. When we arrived at the hotel prior to check-in, they allowed us to leave our luggage while we went for a walk.

Yelp
The apartment worked great for our 1 week stay. The kitchen was fully equipped. Convenient to everything we wanted to do (3 of the tours we took happened to meet outside of the Hard Rock, which was only a 5 minute walk). The staff was excellent, very attentive and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
Didn't let me get a refund let alone a simple hotel credit after I had to cancel 8 days before my travel date (which was plenty of time) due to a personal emergency and work trip. The lack of both understanding and accommodating by this hotel was enough for me to write a yelp review...which I rarely do. You definitely managed to let me down Lumiares.

Brian Y.

Yelp
We picked this boutique hotel for our stay in Lisbon because it seemed to be centrally located. It's in the Bairro Alto section of Lisbon. Our tour guide called this the "hipster part of town" and it did remind us of the "hipster" areas of NYC. Hotel and staff was excellent. We stayed in one of the penthouse suites which did offer some views but the views from the rooftop restaurant is much better. Our suite was very spacious and very clean. They stocked the fridge with complementary beverages which was a nice touch. Breakfast that was included with our stay was great and offered a lot of variety. Most of all, Goncalo and the rest of the staff at the desk and the rooftop restaurant made our stay extra special. We are currently staying at the W Barcelona for our last leg of our Spain/Portugal trip and our family is still talking about our stay at the Lumiares.

Tami Q.

Yelp
My son booked a room here and tried to cancel eight days before arrival and was told no refund. While the cancellation policy does state, "No refund for cancellations," it does not state that funds can't be used toward a future trip. Expedia called on our behalf and spoke to Thomas at the front desk who was unyielding in offering any sort of compromise or gift card or even invitation to come to the hotel at a later date. At roughly $600/night it's not like we were bargain shopping. I guess we learned our lesson that it pays to book with hotels that really care about satisfying customers. If you can't make customers happy before they arrive what does it say about what might happen after you arrive?
