Lyall Hotel and Spa - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"First impressions? Although it's no longer the only independent five-star hotel in Melbourne, The Lyall remains the property by which all other boutiques are judged. This discreet haven in moneyed South Yarra continues to impress with its plush rooms, personalized service, and superlative spa. What’s the crowd like? International celebrities, prominent Australians visiting Melbourne from other parts of the country, and the odd staycationer. Tell us about your room. Even the entry-level options at this all-suite hotel feel generously proportioned, with proper living/lounge areas, large bathrooms with tubs, and well-stocked kitchenettes for those planning to stay a while. The Lyall's Asian-inflected white, cream, and dark-wood color scheme is a tad old-fashioned, but it makes these quiet guest rooms feel all the more calming. Any perks? Strong, fast Wi-Fi (by Australian standards) and 24-hour room service make The Lyall a smart pick for travelers who might need to hole up and work for a day or two. The spa has a dedicated following among South Yarra residents as well as guests, so book ahead. All guests receive a Shopping Privilege Card which grants discounts at a selection of the chic stores and elegant restaurants on nearby Toorak Road and Chapel Street. Food and drink: Worth it? Regular guests love The Lyall's chic champagne bar, which has a lengthy drinks list and a top-notch cheese selection. Breakfast can be taken in this bar or an adjacent lounge and is tailored toward an international crowd (New York-style bagels with lox, omelettes with French cheese). The lunch-and-dinner menu is relatively simple, consisting of well-executed comfort food such as pasta and chicken pot pie. Bottom line. The Lyall's hushed ambience, ageless service, and slight remove from downtown Melbourne set it apart." - Dan F. Stapleton

I stayed with my partner for the first time just as a little getaway from home and the stay was seriously amazing! Marie was the most beautiful welcoming lady ever. I have never experienced such a welcoming welcome at a hotel before. She made sure I got to the room okay, went through everything with me and checked up on us after check in to ensure there was nothing else she could do to make our stay any better. The service was unreal.

Location is good. Rooms are normal clean room but I wouldn’t say there is anything unique about them. Certain missing some of the 5 star touches. Unlike every other hotel that provides water for their guest this does not aside from purchasing from mini bar. There is no gym. There was no turndown service, no pillow menu (I mention this only because I read in other reviews that they had one). No adapters provided. Location is good but at the price there are other places that are probably are more interesting and preferable. The hotel misses the mark because it does have the boutique hotel touches that a lot of other 5 star boutiques have and doesn’t compare to 5 star luxury. I have mostly compared to other 5 star boutique hotels I have stayed in past and this doesn’t come close to it

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Lyall Hotel! The front desk staff, especially Kun and Olivia were amazing (there was another front desk staff member who was also fantastic however I did not catch his name)! They were all very thoughtful and helpful towards any concerns or issues we had during our stay (like connecting to our streaming services online and helping us carry our bags to and from our car!!).The bar and kitchen staff, including Sylvia were so kind and friendly every morning. The a la carte breakfast was fantastic and the coffees were superb! The rooms were luxurious and spacious and the decor throughout the hotel was beautiful. I can't wait to go back again!!

I just spent my wedding prep day and night in the Lyall Hotel. Both exterior and interior are beautifully designed. Service was 10 out of 10. My mum and I had breakfast there too and it was also delicious. I had such a special and joyful time getting ready in the gorgeous hotel room and thank you for making this experience unforgettable for me.❤️ Me and my husband would love to come back there again in the future.

From the moment I arrived at The Lyall Hotel, I felt something rare … A deep sense of calm and comfort, like stepping into a space that’s been thoughtfully created to help you slow down and feel at home. Nestled in the heart of South Yarra, one of Melbourne’s most elegant and vibrant neighborhoods, The Lyall isn’t just a Hotel … it’s a refined sanctuary where luxury meets soul. The interiors are beautifully curated : soft tones, natural textures, and a sense of quiet sophistication that runs through every space. My room was spacious and serene, filled with natural light and details that felt both elevated and personal. It didn’t feel like a Hotel room... It felt like my space, one I could settle into and truly unwind. Mornings here are simply beautiful. Having breakfast on the hotel’s peaceful terrace surrounded by greenery, bathed in soft light, and accompanied only by the calm and gentle birdsong ... Is a rare and grounding experience. It’s a moment to truly pause and soak in the quiet energy before the day begins. Here is an example about what I had for breakfast : a warm, buttery pain au chocolat, a colorful seasonal fruit plate, and fluffy buttermilk pancakes topped with citrus ricotta, maple syrup, and crushed pistachios. Paired with fresh cold-pressed orange juice, glowing green juice, and a perfectly made cappuccino, it was a nourishing start that felt like a true indulgence. But the heart of The Lyall lies in its people. The service here is warm, discreet, and genuinely thoughtful. It felt effortless and sincere. I never once felt like a guest... I felt like I belonged. It’s that rare hospitality that anticipates your needs without ever feeling scripted. The Lyall Hotel is a masterclass in understated luxury. It’s graceful, personal, and full of character ! A quiet retreat where every moment is infused with intention. I left feeling rested, inspired, and already planning my return. If you’re looking for a place that blends timeless elegance with a true sense of home ... This is it. Thank you once again to the team for this beautiful experience.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay at The LYALL Hôtel South Yarra. A fabulous location, excellent young vibrant staff and the most amazing room. The room was apportioned beautifully there was nothing else required and just when we thought it couldn’t get much better we tried the bed!!! We have travelled all over the world and this is without doubt the best bed we have ever slept in, we didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning. Harry, the manager, checked on our satisfaction on a couple of occasions and everything was perfect. Certainly a compliment to Harry the way the staff attended to our every request courteously . Back there again as soon as we travelled back to Melbourne. Oh, by the way everything is on your doorstep, shops, restaurants, florists etc. Carolyn Rowe Beechworth Victoria

I haven’t stayed at the Lyall for a few years and I must say after the renovations it’s even better than before. The staff throughout are amazing and make you feel at home. The rooms are huge for Melbourne and beautifully decorated. Public areas cost and bright. Breakfast on the balcony under the oak trees fantastic. Surrounded by awesome restaurants and cafes. Hard to beat.

I had a great week's stay at The Lyall Hotel. It is perfectly positioned with a 5 minute walk to the shops and Chapel Street but still in a quiet, tree lined street. It is beautifully decorated, the beds are comfortable, the staff are professional and friendly. I did not eat any food there but would have liked the option of in-room dining in the evening. I was surprised that there were no free bottles of water on offer in the room. Also on the website there is an option to have valet parking but no indication of the cost of this until once you book. Overall it was a great stay and I would definitely be booking again.

Yelp
Location , location, location! This is what the hotel offers. Champagne bar is nothing special - anything smaller than a full bottle comes from opening a piccolo bottle. The choices are nothing special. Yes, the front desk and bar are cosy and intimate, and oh so friendly. While I loved the attention, it seemed a little contrived and I was happier to stay inside my room and enjoy the space and amenities inside my room. It will be my first consideration for any other stays I need to look for in Melbourne in the future.

Yelp
We were so excited about this place as it was the cap to our three week trip to New Zealand and Australia. Arriving early for our reservation, we were quickly greeted by a friendly porter who grabbed our luggage and happily agreed to hold our bags for us while we waited for the room to be cleaned. When we finally checked in, the room was dated and dirty. The bed should have been replaced years ago. The sofa was dirty, as were the walls and carpet. What's worse is that I called the front desk immediately to ask for another room and was informed that none were available. At check-in, I was charged for one nights stay -$250 US. So, upon our quick exit from the hotel, I inquired about the night I was charged and was told I'd see a refund on my Visa card within 3 days. It's been almost two weeks and no refund! We ended up staying at the The Olsen (very close to the Lyall) and it was lovely and the bed was dreamy. The Lyall was obviously loved when it was new but now neglected by the owner.

Yelp
I would not recommend this hotel. It is worn, the wi-fi works intermittently at best and there is construction going on next door starting at 7:30 AM sharp.

Yelp
Our family had an absolutely delightful stay at the Lyall over the New Year's holiday. We debated whether to stay in downtown Melbourne or at the Lyall in South Yarra, and I am so glad that we decided to stay at the Lyall. The hotel is located in the heart of vibrant South Yarra, which is bustling with incredible restaurants, cafes and shops. The service was top notch and always so friendly and courteous. Beyond a doubt, the service was at the level we have received staying at Four Seasons, Ritz Carltons and Fairmonts around the world, though with an even more personal touch. The accommodations were excellent and we luxuriated in the space of our two-bedroom suite. We also loved the inviting common areas of this boutique hotel, which made us feel more like we were guests in a well-appointed home than in a hotel. We explored both in and around Melbourne as well as in greater Victoria, and the hotel was the perfect launching point for all our adventures. We were able to easily explore the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the hotel on foot as well as by borrowing bikes from the hotel. We secured a rental car nearby and took several day trips within an hour or two of the hotel to some of the most stunning beaches and view points we have ever visited anywhere in the world (including traveling down Great Ocean Road). My husband and I agreed that this was one of our favorite vacations we have taken in 20 years! Many thanks to the staff at The Lyall!
