The Lygon Arms

"How did it strike you on arrival? It's difficult to find such a historic property that is still an allure to in-the-know travelers, and the Lygon Arms has been doing it well since the 16th century. The sister property of the much glitzier Cliveden House (of Meghan Markle pre-wedding fame), this is the place that you're more likely to bump into Harry and Meghan wearing their jeans at the bar enjoying a glass of wine. Nice. What’s the crowd like?English countryside lovers, but without the pomp and pretense. This is where Londoners come for a truly low-key weekend away. How was check in?For a hotel that has welcomed guests for nearly 500 years, the service is expectedly smooth. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The oft-downside to so many of these historic properties is a lack of space in the guest rooms. Luckily, especially with the higher-category rooms, that is not the case with the Lygon Arms. The Courtyard Suites in particular boast access to the terraced gardens filled with gracious trees and flowers, and have plenty of space to breathe. Thanks to a 2017 renovation, the rooms have been gracefully brought into the 21st century, with fast and free wifi as well as widescreen TVs, air conditioning, and in-room Nespresso machines. The renovation integrated some fabulous antique and period furniture into the design, so there is still a remarkable sense of history without sacrificing comfort. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The mattresses are handmade in Devon and are so indulgent, you'll be asking the front desk how to order one to bring home. Room service and food: Worth it?Lygon Bar & Grill was opened in 2017 as part of the renovations, and focuses on, as the hotel puts it, "seasonality and product provenance" (how very British), and has a delightful selection of European wines, to boot. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The spa and leisure club is a must-visit during your stay. Surrounded by three lush acres of Cotswold scenery, it features an indoor pool, a sauna and steam room, nail bar, six single treatment rooms, one double treatment room for couples, as well as a fully stocked gym with personal trainers for hire. This being a true British country estate, there are plenty of old-school activities to pass the time, among them archery, pistol shooting, falconry, duck herding, clay shooting, and more. Bottom line: worth it, and why?For a quintessential English countryside experience that's more on the low-key side, you can't do better." - Todd Plummer

Only went for a drink and nibbles. The location is amazing, right in the centre of Broadway. The building is stunning and outside terrace was lovely on a summer's day. The service was a bit shocking, if I'm honest. One of the waiters who was tall and bold was quite rude and abrupt. There definitely wasn't service with a smile, and that wasn't just with us, we observed him like that with everyone. The olives were lovely and the homemade pork scratchings, amazing! I'd definitely go back for a meal next time. The waiter was probably just having an off day.

Lovely weekend stay, service exemplary from reception, bar, restaurants and spa. Special mention for Izzy in the spa whose enthusiasm was wonderful! We ate at the Tavern and the Grill - not extensive menus but the food was good hearty fare, as you would expect from a James Martin-backed venture. The courtyard was gorgeous, great for a drink or snack. Gardens beautifully maintained. Glad we ignored the negative reviews. We’d definitely return.

Just back from a two night stay here and it was very good. Room 27 was clean and spacious but a little close to the kitchen fans for me. Sunday lunch in the grill was amazing! Staff overall were very good but the bar was slow to serve drinks. Appreciate it was a weekend but 15 mins to pour a beer is too long. Otherwise had a great time and would definitely return for a third time. Thanks

Not the first stay here , however I won’t rush back. |For a beautiful building, super courteous staff, great location and potentially a great all round experience, this time the stay was lacking. The staffing level seemed low or just that those working didn’t work effectively. The food in The Grill for dinner was poor. No where near as good as last time we stayed. We waited an hour for the main course and it was disappointing at best. When we asked for English mustard we were told they didn’t have any. When the manager came to the table we mentioned it and he went to another area of the hotel and found some. |Breakfast the following morning was pretty dismal. A poor selection displayed effectively. The cooked breakfast was stone cold and was sent back to the kitchen. For the cost of a room here the food should be impressive and it most definitely isn’t. The whole stay was mediocre and I’d not recommend

Stayed at the hotel for two nights, myself my husband and our elderly dog. We stayed in a courtyard room. We parked into the car park (choice of 2, plenty of spaces) at the back of the hotel which is free when you give your registration. The room is sizeable with the added bonus of a small settee area, a bed and bowls were provided for the dog. The room however was very dark and we had to have the lights on most of the time. The room is air conditioned but the unit is very noisy and because these rooms are in the courtyard, they open on to the paved sitting area (which we were unaware of at time of booking) so therefore to minimise noise you have to keep the windows shut. The glazing did minimise the noise, however it did become troublesome at times but the tables and chairs were not accessible after 9.30 at night, so it did become quieter. These rooms give easy access. To the left of the courtyard across a small road there are gardens for dog walking. These are pretty and well maintained and we had some conversation with a gardener who was very informative and clearly knowledgeable, an asset to the hotel we thought. We had dinner prebooked in the Tavern (the pub just next to the hotel) for our first night. This was very scruffy and small, we ended up outside (weather permitted luckily) and the menu very limited, I had fish and chips which was dry and overcooked, this was expensive too, not good value or quality. The staff were attentive and we got served quickly. The next day we breakfasted in the large banqueting hall, where the food quality was better thankfully but the staff seemed stressed and were morose. We dined that night in the Russell Grill (in the main hotel) which was classically decorated but with a lighter feel. It had somewhat better staff (although also seemed stressed) and the food was good. The hotel is a magnificent building, full of history with furnishings and decor to match, its’ well placed in the centre of Broadway which is a quintessential Cotswold village, very picturesque and quaint. I felt overall the hotel was very confusing, the dining options were not explained properly on booking or on arrival at the hotel. The service was slow and some of the staff unhelpful and seemed unhappy. The first day we waited at the outside tables at 11.30 hoping to get a snack when I went into the bar, the waiter I talked to was quite abrupt and didn’t tell me service didn’t start until noon and no snacks were available at all, I found that out through a fellow guest. I have stayed in many hotels but can honestly say this one was disappointing, it just did not have the luxury feel you expect for the price. Their staff need to be trained to be more helpful and professional, and to give a better service, everything did seem to much trouble and effort for them, they let the building down!

What a beautiful, charming hotel. Me and my husband just stayed here for our honeymoon, and felt like we were in an idyllic little bubble the whole time! The hotel itself is so cosy and steeped in history. We dined in both The Tavern and Grill - both delicious. The staff were very friendly, and made our stay a real treat. A special thank you to Grace in the spa for a fantastic massage! Nestled in the heart of Broadway, the location couldn’t be more stunning. We went on some lovely countryside walks, and the scenery is breathtaking. Would love to return!

We visited yesterday for a spa day. I bought this for my Mum for her 60th and everything was just perfect. Regrettably, we did not get names to mention in our review but the lady who helped us upon arrival looked after us wonderfully throughout the morning and our Spa therapist who did our treatments (we had the same lady) was brilliant. My mum fell asleep during her facial. I had the deep sleep treatment and that was amazing. The food was also lovely. We enjoyed using the facilities too and wondering around Broadway in the sunshine. We will definitely come back and stay over next time- we didn’t want to leave at the end of the day!

Ideally located in the very centre of this beautiful Cotswolds village, this property has been the pre-eminent hotel in Broadway for decades. The Cotswolds stone building and sympathetically constructed annexes fit seamlessly into the High St. it’s an old building that is heavily used by guests and passing trade. Food and drink are readily available throughout the ground floor…but when does shabby chic become “tired”? Opinions will vary!|The bedroom and bathroom were spacious but at £450 a night, it should be.|The biggest negative is that service is variable…it lacks consistency.

Yelp
As others have also noted THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE RESTAURANT AKA BAR AND GRILL, NOT THE HOTEL. It's hard to find the actual name. The receipt says the Lygon Arms Bar and Grill. The website says GRILL by James Martin. ‍ We were seated no problem without a reservation in our hiking clothes. Ambiance and service great. Elegant but casual. Solid meal and cocktails. Total cost was £114 pp but that was for cocktails, starters, wine, mains and dessert. Would definitely return and recommend.

Yelp
This is the restaurant that is a part of the Lygon Arms Hotel - but it deserves a review of its very own because it effectively stands alone, is beautiful, charming and historic in its own right. Just sitting in the restaurant makes you sense the history and grandeur around you. Unlike some of the places around it is NOT snooty and stuck up. The service is great, polite, prompt, caring but also down to Earth. The whole ambience is very special and worth visiting just for that! The walls and carvings, the paintings, the huge open hearth burning away in the winter (like during our recent visits). The offerings range from steaks and burgers to fish and chips, lamb shanks and vegetarian offerings and more. We enjoyed the whole experience of eating here several times (pics posted of some of our eats). The food is reliably a solid GOOD whatever you choose. However I do find it a little bit pricey when you keep in mind that it is a la carte. Do we recommend? Absolutely - even though I would suggest that you are in fact a bit of a premium for where you are eating (GBP 20 for breakfast seemed steep to me) and the whole experience. Will we go again? Of course!! Review #91 2019

Yelp
What a disappointing stay. We were put in room 44. After several days my mother and I noticed we were scratching and saw little bugs in our bed. My daughter was on the sleeper sofa and did not get any bites. We had housekeeping come up. They confirmed seeing the bugs and offered to change sheets and mattress topper. Obviously this didn't work and we had more bites. They finally changed rooms for us. I went back to speak with the hotel and they said they couldn't find any bugs. I was curious as if they were bed bugs as all of our luggage needed to be cleaned. They basically told us we made it up. I am very disappointed in this hotel. We had a 4 night stay here and due to service will not be back.
