The Marine Hermanus (Hermanus, South Africa) 3 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"More than a few seaside resorts offer whale watching excursions. But at the Marine Hermanus, guests need not leave their rooms to watch the spectacle — this stretch of the southern coast of South Africa is a natural playground for the Southern Right Whales that breach near the shore from July to November. The 45-room resort, built at the turn of the century and restored in 1998 by Liz McGrath, the proprietress of a series of luxury hotels in the Cape Province, is gracefully furnished and surrounded by exquisite gardens. The Marine’s truly notable feature, however, is and always has been its stunning clifftop location overlooking Walker Bay — you could miss out on half the appeal if you don’t book a suite facing the sea." - Tablet Hotels

Our stay at The Marine Hotel in Hermanus was absolutely incredible. From the moment we arrived, it was clear why this property is considered one of South Africa’s best. The hotel itself is stunning, perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean with panoramic views that change beautifully throughout the day. We visited during whale season, and it was such a joy to see everyone—from staff to guests—rush to the terrace with excitement each time a whale appeared right offshore. The service was exceptional. Every member of the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, taking the time to chat with us each day about our plans and helping coordinate everything from taxis to restaurant recommendations. They even arranged a seamless car transfer to and from Creation Winery. The breakfast spread was unbelievable, with so many delicious options, and both lunch and dinner at the hotel were outstanding. We loved relaxing by the pool for lunch and taking morning walks along the cliff path right outside the property. There’s even a nearby tidal pool that’s perfect for a quick, refreshing dip. The rooms were beautiful—elegant, comfortable, and well-appointed. We stayed in both a suite and a luxury room, and I’d happily recommend either. The entire experience felt luxurious yet welcoming, and I can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Hermanus.

A wonderful stay at this superbly located boutique hotel. The location is stunning overlooking the bay and our room has a wonderful ocean view|The room was first class with everything you need including a huge bathroom with both bath and shower. Lovely toiletries|There is also loads of free tea and coffee and snacks in the room too|Breakfast was delicious either a huge buffet and also a choice of hot food. We ate outside in the sun. We also had dinner in the hotel on the first night and this was equally delicious. The springbok was excellent. |We also loved the outdoor pool and enjoyed some much needed chill time there in the sun. Loads of new loungers and food/drinks are available too|One of the best hotels we have stayed in and would highly recommend it!

From the very moment we go into the parking area at was an absolute pleasure. From Leonard sorting out luggage, to Patrick who took on us on a tour of the hotel, the kitchen staff, those working in the restaurant. What a wonderful experience. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The staff was so friendly and helpful. This was truly a five star experience. The rooms were of the highest quality and the food excellent. You have definitely gained a return visitor.

The Marine Hotel has to be one of the most beautiful and amazing hotels we have ever stayed at. The beauty, attention to detail, location, food and the list goes on and on. The room we were allocated was exceptional. All I can say is that if you are going to Hermanus, book this hotel immediately. JUST SUPERB!

Wow, wow, wow, we love this place! As locals, we've been regulars in the lounge bar and restaurant for a while now, but 1 November was the first time we stayed – as a treat for our anniversary. And what a treat it was. The room was a delight, comfortable and spacious, with everything you could possibly need, including a complimentary mini-bar. The staff are well-trained and charming. Lovely Bianca showed us to our room and Augustine was every bit the attentive waiter at breakfast. I love the combination of vintage style and unfussy service at the Marine – and they just know how to look after their guests by paying attention to the little things, like the bottle of bubbly nestled between two towels crafted into a heart, found on our bed when we returned from dinner. "Same time next year, darling?" I asked Mrs B when we left. I think it must be done.

The location of the hotel is truly spectacular — right in the heart of everything, and the room itself was spacious. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didn’t quite live up to expectations. Room service, breakfast and dinner were very average, and attention to detail was lacking. Dirty glasses and cups were left behind, towels were left lying around, and even the fresh towels had stains. The room, though large, felt untidy — for example, the iron was just standing out in the open instead of being properly stored. Apart from the room size and location, I personally didn’t find the stay worthy of the “Small Luxury Hotels of the World” title. It simply didn’t feel very luxurious.

Wow! Location location location... oh and by the way, the service and hospitality are equally as amazing. The entire staff was so accommodating and helpful. One of the concierges heard my name briefly in passing and then remembered it for my three day stay. Very kind! The food was all amazing and the rooms are so beautiful and comfy (pics attached). I also had a treatment done at the spa (facial and massage) which was so heavenly. The location is not only great for whale viewing but also very walkable to lots of yummy yestaurants and cute shops. Would love to come back and stay again!

Unsurpassed position for whale watching. Superbly attentive staff, especially Heloise. Wonderful breakfast with plenty of options and delicious dinner (great food!). Well equipped gym, clean and spacious, two treadmills, one bike, one rower, one elliptical, a great cable machine, and plenty of dumbbells and kettlebells. Small but lovely heated swimming pool with chlorinated sea water inside the hotel, but there’s also a tidal pool outside by the ocean (with very cold water!). We had a fantastic experience and a fabulous room that allowed us to see whales every day through the window. There is a stunning cliff path just outside the hotel accessed via the garden where one can walk for hours with beautiful views. Beautiful flowers throughout the hotel. Hospitality at its very best!
