An Insider's Guide to Ottawa, Canada

"A stylish boutique hotel housed in a converted 1906 building that once operated as a YMCA and was associated with a Father of Confederation; renovated into a hotel in 2017, it offers a convenient walk to Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market and features an on-site Cocotte Bistro serving French-inspired brunch, lunch, dinner, and daytime coffee and snacks." - Alexandra Emanuelli

5 Best Day Trips From Montreal: Québec City, Ottawa, the Eastern Townships, Mont Tremblant, and Hudson | Condé Nast Traveler

"Though Ottawa boasts some famous grande dames, this modern boutique hotel downtown reopens this summer after a fabulous renovation. The peerless location, large rooms, and fresh in-room amenities such as jetted tubs remain the same (albeit a little facelift), but the addition of a new restaurant will surely cause some buzz around town for guests and locals alike. The open-plan lobby, at the ground floor of a five-story-high atrium that houses the rooms, has a striking industrial-chic vibe. It's not the most romantic property in town, but it's the most seamlessly on point. You'll sleep well, work easily, and be right in the middle of things." - Todd Plummer, Isa Tousignant

The Metcalfe Hotel

"We don't know much about this place—can you give us the scoop?Though Ottawa boasts some famous grande dame hotels, like the Fairmont Château Laurier and the Lord Elgin, this modern boutique hotel right downtown offers a peerless location, plus larger rooms and newer, fresher in-room amenities—including jetted tubs, 42-inch TVs, and an indoor pool. The open-plan lobby, at the ground floor of a five-story-high atrium that houses the rooms, has a striking industrial-chic vibe. We love it. And the other guests who are staying here—what are they like? This is a mostly business hotel, as Ottawa is a mostly business and civil-servant town—it's where Parliament is located, after all. The more romantic set might choose more storied properties, but the Metcalfe has a contemporary charm and user-friendliness that draws the travel-savvy. It's filled with repeat visitors. It makes sense that they'd want less pomp. Speaking of which: How was the service? The service here is friendly, helpful, straightforward, and accommodating. Onto the good stuff: Tell us about the digs. Any room in particular we should book? The Executive Rooms have cushy beds, nice hardwood floors, spa showers, jetted tubs, a super-ergonomic office chair, and energizing views of Metcalfe Street. What about the mini bar, or the toiletries? Anything you were impressed with, and want to shout out?The wifi is fast and free, and the location—blocks away from Parliament Hill—is excellent. The hotel is located right in the middle of downtown and close to restaurants, pharmacies, cafés, and parking. That all sounds pretty ideal. What about the food situation? You can skip the restaurant, but there's an attached Starbucks downstairs as well as an in-room Keurig machine. The continental breakfast room service is adequate. Noted. Anything else you can recommend while we're here?Take a morning dip in the indoor pool. Bottom line: is it worth it to book a night here, and why?Save on money and gain on space at this modern property. It's not the most romantic in town, but it's the most seamlessly on point. You'll sleep well, work easily, and be right in the middle of things." - Isa Tousignant

The Metcalfe by Gray Collection (Ottawa, Ontario) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Montreal has long been a boutique-hotel hotbed, and in the Metcalfe the Montreal-based Gray Collection is responsible for one of the most stylish hotels in Ottawa. Its downtown location places it in conversation with the ordinary corporate brands, a comparison that favors the Metcalfe in just about every dimension — it’s more intimate, more visually distinctive, and arguably just as luxurious as anything else in town. The rooms are handsome, light-filled, loft-inspired; the hotel’s Living Room is a versatile space that’s well suited for coffee, co-working, or cocktails, while Cocotte Bistro presents a local take on classic French bistro cooking." - Tablet Hotels

I booked the Metcalfe based on reviews that it was a boutique hotel with excellent service. While the hotel was nicely furnished and clean, the service was no different than any other reputable hotel. I don’t feel I gained anything by staying here versus other hotels. We booked the bed and breakfast package and the service in the restaurant was good on Saturday morning but Friday was disappointing- order came out wrong, no offer to refill coffee or ask how meal was. On Saturday night I approached the front desk staff to ask about getting our bill emailed so I could look it over before we checked out as we were leaving Sunday morning at 4am (I wanted to make sure our breakfast vouchers had been removed from the total bill). He said he couldn’t do that but would make sure it was sent to me by 3am. When I was leaving at 4am it still had not been emailed. I went downstairs and he was not at the front desk, but rather lying on a couch in the common area. He did not have the bill ready and said he would email it to me. As of 2 hours later, I still have not received it. |||So overall, it was not a “bad” hotel, but it was disappointing. We were at a boutique hotel in Barcelona where the service was exceptional and so I was hoping for something at least close to this. It wasn’t worth paying more money for the “service” when I have received better service at chain hotels.

My stay at The Metcalfe was nothing short of incredible. From check-in to checkout, the service was absolutely amazing.||Alex at the front desk went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed, even though I was checking in well past the usual time. He was professional, attentive, and truly made me feel welcome. Our valet, Hassan, is an absolute gem!!! friendly, helpful, and such a pleasure to interact with.||The room itself was spacious, spotless, and very comfortable, which made the stay even more enjoyable.||I also had all of my meals at Cocotte during my stay and was so fortunate to have Chelsea as my server each time. She is such a delight. knowledgeable, warm, and excellent at her job. Her recommendations and service made each dining experience memorable.||It’s clear that the management at The Metcalfe is doing an outstanding job, because every part of my stay was seamless.

The hotel has many positive attributes. |Lovely design. Front desk staff friendly. Close to attractions - walked everywhere. maps available at the front desk. ||Room: clean and the perfect size. We were there for 4 nights, we could have used more hangers and more storage space. Bed was comfortables but the pillows could have been firmer. Thermostat was fussy. Hard to get the temperature in the room at a suitable level. At night the room was suitably dark. Charging plugs by the bed was ideal. Arm char was a lovely touch. ||You can see right down to the first floor- impact it can get noisy when there is a function in the main lobby. ||Parking is good but expensive. ||Restaurant - good meals ( dinner). Our first night we dined there and the server was spread thin which made our experience not ideal. However, we ate there on the last night and the server was excellent. It was noisy and hard to hear your guest. Meals were very good. Especially the shrimp in a Pernod sauce. ||We would go back to the Metcalfe and recommend.

Pros: The lobby is absolutely gorgeous with a big skylight and a library. The staff were great, from the housekeepers to the front desk and the restaurant team. We had dinner the first night and the food was very good, drinks from the bar tender was great as well, thank you Brook! The room was cozy and clean, and I loved the bed and pillows. Cons: I wouldn’t consider this hotel luxury. The rooms are fine, but nothing really stood out. It was clean, but the lack of slippers in the room was surprising. Only one elevator was working, and it had water damage with a few broken lights, which felt a little creepy. What really stood out to me was how understaffed they seemed. I feel like we only saw two desk employees the entire stay. A tall gentleman who checked us in, very kind and helpful, but later we saw him parking cars as well. The young woman working the night shift at the front desk was back the following day, and then we saw her cleaning rooms in her suit!! It honestly looked like they hadn’t gone home. The housekeepers were also a bit loud in the morning when talking to each other in the hallways. I’m sure they did not mean to be rude, just louder than expected when you want to sleep in. Lastly, our room window faced the library. While it’s a beautiful view, it made me feel closed in, especially since the window doesn’t open for fresh air.

Totally cool hotel in a perfect position for seeing the sights. Room was comfortable although on the small side. Aircon was good and plenty of hangers in the wardrobe.|On site restaurant is pricey but the bar area is airy, comfortable and welcoming. Plenty of other restaurants close by, the Diners in Elgin Street are a better option for breakfast if you don't want a cooked breakfast.|Only one lift working and our door card failed twice in the two nights we stayed which is a pain, especially when you need to prove your identity to get a new one (understandable) and your passport is in the room safe.

The hotel is conveniently located in downtown, close to the Parliament. The reception staff were very accommodating, and while the hallway was a bit dark, it had a pleasant scent. Our room was clean, fresh-smelling, and the bathroom was modern and spotless. The property also offers great amenities like a gym and a game room. Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be coming back.

Overall, I loved this hotel. It is centrally located downtown with an awesome luxury feel. We did a suite and it was very comfortable. Staff was very friendly. My only complaint was that the room height was a bit low and dark but it is an older building and they made up for this with solid lighting and luxury amenities.

Stayed here for my birthday with my husband. The room was spacious and beautifully designed and so was the bathroom. The AC worked well and kept the room cool, everything was clean and well-kept. Comfy bed, pillows, cozy blanket and plush robes. Valet service was great, the staff was very nice, we also had room service breakfast (it was ok, but I probably wouldn’t get it again), the check in/out process was smooth and the location was incredibly convenient. One note is, the rooms look out the circular courtyard area that is the inside of the restaurant so it can get a little loud but everything died down at 11pm. Would definitely come back again!

Yelp
The front desk and staff r rude, unsympathetic and unhelpful. I Made a mistake with my prepaid reservation and instead of trying to help me at ALL, they sent me On my way. It was literally a blizzard outside. I mean, the business is hospitality, where is the hospitality? They act like it's an exclusive hotel in Paris. You're in downtown Ottawa buddy, chill out. Bald man at the from desk was anything but useful. Go to one of the 50 other hotels in the area. Look at my other reviews I barely give less than 4 for anything

Yelp
We stayed here five nights are were impressed with the staff, location and amenities. The lobby has a variety of seating if you want to spend time outside your room. We stayed in a junior suite which had plenty of room to stretch out and relax. It did have a collection of wildly mismatched furniture but who cares? Our only complaint was a requirement to reconnect to the internet every 24 hours.

Yelp
My daughters and I had a girls weekend and we stayed here. The hotel is stunning! It has a cozy, warm vibe. The lobby is so inviting and comfortable. The staff are so knowledgeable and kind! I was originally going to book a hotel chain, but boutique hotels all the way! The rooms and beds were beautiful! The beds were so comfortable and the rain fall shower was fabulous! The restaurant was amazing for brunch as well! We will definitely be staying here again! Thank you!
