On the Grid : St Germain, Al Fresco, Mezzanine

"Right at the corner of Sol and Cruz Streets, St. Germain is one of Old San Juan’s most popular establishments. What started 10 years ago as a charming bistro, is now a three floor establishment that include two bars; Mezzanine on the second floor and Al Fresco on the top floor with a terrace. St. Germain’s menu is a mix of light and delicious salads, quiches and sandwiches. Mezzanine and Al Fresco are casual spaces where visitors enjoy chatting in its delightful outdoor terrace overlooking Old San Juan while drinking signature cocktails such as Basil Mojitos and the House Sangria." - Ana Jovane Serrano

🌟 5 Stars – A Must-Visit in Old San Juan! 🌟 N Mezzanine was an absolute gem! Tucked away with charming ambiance and a cozy, elevated vibe, this spot instantly became one of our San Juan favorites. We tried the shrimp & pineapple dish — the flavors were bold, fresh, and perfectly balanced. The fish tacos were equally amazing: crispy, well-seasoned, and topped with vibrant slaw and just the right touch of spice. To drink, we enjoyed an Old Fashioned made with Maker’s Mark — expertly crafted and smooth — and a refreshing house cocktail that was bright, citrusy, and ideal for the warm Puerto Rican evening. Service was attentive but relaxed, and the overall vibe was chic without being pretentious. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great food, creative cocktails, and a memorable experience in Old San Juan!

This is a great place and location. Right down in old San Juan on the 2nd floor, they have a bunch of drink specials and great food. We visited on a Saturday night. This place was happening with a lot of traffic. We were able to sit on the balcony, and people watched for a while and had a little dinner and some cocktails while we sat here and people watched. It's a lot of fun. Definitely stop by.

We had such an amazing dinner here. The tapas were great but our server was better! Adrienne was our best server of the trip! She went above and beyond to make sure our friend's anniversary dinner was special and gave great food suggestions. We loved all the tapas except the Mac and cheese. Restaurant Seemed sketchy from the outside but we went up the stairs and loved it all.

Google
What an awesome find. We had struggled to find a place open for dinner on a Monday night. We tried 3 places and finally decided to give the Mezzanine a try. We were welcomed in, even though Eloy was the only one working he still made sure we were tended to. A great job managing the whole place regardless of the staffing. Eloy had great recommendations for drinks and great conversation as well. The food was absolutely delicious and the drinks even better. We actually never sit at the bar anywhere but if you come here, just do it, the experience and conversation with Eloy and the other staff that arrived later was so welcoming. We hope to come back soon and if you are in the area, DO NOT MISS The Mezzanine. Thanks Eloy!!! -Ethan & Michaela

This was an unforgettable experience and the highlight of our time in Puerto Rico! Eloy made us feel incredibly special—he’s warm, friendly, and exceptionally kind. He even prepared Coqui Coqui to celebrate my birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch. The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect. Highly recommended! 🇵🇷❤️

Google
The food was really flavorful and the tapas portions were decent. The restaurant is on the second floor.. is calm and fancy atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed meal.

Ditto to all the other 5 star reviews. This place is awesome.Great music , great drinks, great service and the finest bartenders . From Lorna the greeter/hostess to Ray and Allison the aforementioned superb bartenders. Do yourself a favor and come here as soon as you can.

Google
Drinks were top notch, and I highly recommend the the mezzanine mule, they make their own ginger beer so it speaks for itself. Alex was incredible and the atmosphere was very chill and laid back.

Yelp
This was such a gem. The waitstaff was exceptional, so friendly and helpful. The cocktails were delicious and were so creative. But the food is the highlight! We did pescatarian and the all of our selections were amazing. The shrimp was so fresh! The potatoes! Also- dessert. Chef's kiss!

Yelp
Delicious & highlight at cruise stop while in San Juan Very small place up on 2nd story - don't miss it if you are in area !

Yelp
We came here based on recent reviews. We were able to get a seat at the bar by the window. For a Saturday night, we had the bar area to ourselves. We ordered the patatas bravas and meatballs. The potatoes were like the frozen home fries I could get at a grocery store with a crema drizzled on top. Not great. The meatballs made me think of IKEA Swedish meatballs but tossed in a teriyaki sauce. I would also skip those. If it weren't for the cocktails and friendly staff, I would most likely not visit again. But now that I know, I'd skip the food.

Yelp
Great location and very eclectic inside. We had an almost private restaurant with great views from the windows. My boyfriend and I split the tacos, Mac and cheese, and the patatas. All were very delicious. The food is definitely meant to share! Our cocktails were also great. My boyfriend had the Guava Cosmo and I had the Coquí Coquí, which our waiter said was a twist on their Puerto Rican holiday drink. It was delicious and creamy, definitely recommend!

Yelp
First off, we loved our server. She was dressed like we were in a rock bar but the atmosphere at Mezzanine is intimate, expensive, and sensual-esq. She was adorable and incredibly sweet. We ordered a lavender honey bee cocktail, mac and cheese, and garlic shrimp. All were tasty and very good! Highly recommend coming here at night when you can sip a cocktail under moonlight (windows are large and open so you are literally sitting in the sky) and hear the surroudning music of the neighborhood. Epic date night place!

Yelp
A great place to get off your feet and relax. Much more quiet during the early to late afternoon. Tapas and craft cocktails to be had. The food is much more local than most places, the cocktails are interesting and well-balanced. The seating is limited so if you come at a peak time, make sure you have a reservation. The staff is super friendly and happy to provide suggestions on their food and drinks. The drinks are poured fresh with freshly squeezed citrus juices and they are absolutely delicious. The bar itself sits above St. Germaine and is accessed by a side stairway, it may be easy to kiss depending on which street you approach from. Definitely a must stop when in Old San Juan.

Yelp
Great tapas!! Ten fish tacos and tuna tartar are a must must must. There is a rooftop bar and the vibes at the restaurant on the lower floor was very relaxing. It was dark though.

Yelp
We picked this restaurant for our last night in San Juan wanting authentic tapas and it did not disappoint! The prices were incredibly reasonable and everything we had was really yummy (patatas bravas, meatballs, pineapple shrimp, and carne asada tacos with two drinks). The staff was very friendly, the ambience was so relaxing and unique, and as others mentioned, great air conditioning on a hot night. We will definitely return on our next trip!

Jonathan G.

Yelp
Stopped for dinner on our first night in old San Juan and the Mezzanine did not disappoint! Tapas dishes were all amazing - black bean hummus, patatas bravas, sweet & tangy meatballs, pinchos caprese, tacos de carnitas. Food and service were fantastic and would definitely highly recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
Really nice place. Food and drinks were great. The bartender/waitstaff are REALLY good. They took the time to make recommendations and made us feel at home. Will definitely come back here when visiting PR again.

Yelp
We were roaming around old San Juan and heard this amazing music being played from somewhere. Hmm then what we went in to checkout the place. It's a small space with great music and great drinks. We just had appetizers patata bravas which is basically a dish of spain ( fried potatoes) , the spices on top of it made all the difference. Delicious! Drink was refreshing.

Yelp
Comfortable vibes, delicious drinks, and wonderful waitstaff. My family and I stumbled across this amazing place on a whim, and we're so happy we did! You'll lose track of time here, talking the night away and enjoying the ambiance.

Yelp
We had a great time here! delicious tapas and cocktails. Very nice vibe and open air.

Yelp
We read so many amazing reviews about this place and were looking forward to it. When we walked in, I went back through the yelp reviews to make sure we were in the right place. It did not look like what I was expecting. It was super eclectic inside and had tiny little tables that wobbled with all sorts of mismatched chairs in the room. I'm sure this is the vibe they were going for, but it was a bit strange. There was a couple next to us that was talking to someone on speaker phone which didn't help the experience even though it wasn't the restaurant's fault. It's not very large so we could hear it all and could have chimed in. We each got a drink, one was fine at best and mediocre at worst. The Guava Cosmo was much better. We also ordered the ceviche and one of the tacos (I feel like it may have been tuna?). I couldn't recommend either of them. The ceviche was really not good. The fish was not flaky at all and tasted water logged if I had to guess. Almost like it hadn't fully finished thawing. It had very little flavor and the flavor it did have was not appetizing. I stopped eating it after a few bites. The taco was ok and had good flavor, but the texture of the tortilla and the fish were not great. I rarely leave bad reviews, but this won't be on our list if we are in San Juan again.

Yelp
This was our first bite to eat as we arrived in San Juan. It was the perfect amount of tapas and delicious cocktails. The ambience is low light, small area on the 2nd floor. Apparently this use to be someone's home of a political figure as there are tons of photos of him everywhere. I tried the tuna tar tar and crostini bites, but my favorite was the pizza! Small bite pizzas that were cheesy and delicious. It was the sharp cheddar for me. My cocktail was the Nice Green with gin cucumber and lime, and it was perfect amount of sweet for me. Highly recommend for a drink and small plates when you're in San Juan!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
The service was very nice and the drinks were fantastic. We only ordered one tapas from their brunch menu and it was ok but it was imitation crab and it didn't say that on the menu. The piña colada I ordered was our favorite!!
google avatar

Yelp
Small little quiet and intelligent bar. Ambience is awesome! Great cocktails. .......

Yelp
We stopped by this place to grab drinks and lunch. It was tapas style to share, which is perfect for us to try all the things. The server was very attentive, and fast. Beautiful location over looking the streets.

Yelp
- VERY cute spot - Located on the 2nd floor, try get a spot on the balconies - The walls have a ton of different mirrors and the rest of the place is decorated very well - The drinks are way better than the food - The appetizers are ok, would recommend food elsewhere. They add a lot of salt to their dishes - Very few tables - Great service - They have a bar area behind the curtains

Yelp
Perfect little stop for a drink and appetizer when walking around San Juan. I love the atmosphere of little quaint tables. You enter off of Calle del Sol, and walk up the beautiful tile-laden stairs to the second floor. Our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. I had the Peridot to drink. It was refreshing and cold (and just really pretty!) The ceviche was tasty and fresh. I definitely recommend The Mezzanine if you are looking for a little bite to eat and a refreshing specialty drink!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful main room with history of the independent movement in PR. Comfy but old soft chairs. Cool air conditioned place with excellent service. Creative cocktails and reasonably priced. Go here instead of Al Fresco's.
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
Top tier cocktails! Had the Coqui Coqui and the Quita to' and I couldn't recommend them enough. Also got the Patas Bravas with carnitas they were the best potatoes I've ever eaten. The carnitas tacos and spicy tuna tartar were also good. The staff were amazing as well. Our waiter opened the doors so we could sit on the balcony when we asked him. He was also very attentive and polite. Couldn't recommend this place enough.

Yelp
I really loved this place. The cocktails are super solid, the food is super solid, and the vibe is like a small jazz cafe in Europe somewhere. Really intimate setting. Easily a regular visit for me when coming to San Juan.
google avatar

Shaun R.

Yelp
Some of the best drinks on the island. We couldn't wait to go there and they were kind enough to open an extra balcony for us. The bartender Kayshla was awesome. I might have spelt that wrong. What a vibe!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a gem of a place. Reminds me of a speakeasy, with narrow stairs leading up to the entrance. You walk into room with chairs and small tables. The cocktails are absolutely delicious, well made and potent. The tapas were also tasteful and diverse to appeal different preferences. Service was fast, attentive and the overall feel of the place is casual. Highly recommend for tapas and great cocktails.
google avatar

Caroline W.

Yelp
Fantastic small cocktail bar. It is hidden on the second floor with dim lights, piano music, great artwork and good view. Not many tables. I ordered the Coqui Coqui drink to start and they toasted the coconut in front of me. My friend ordered the Lavender and the Bee which was also delicious. We shared patatas bravas which was a large portion and absolutely Devine. For the main I ordered the macaroni cheese which was rich and filling. The dessert looked amazing but was too full to try. I did not catch our servers name but she was the only server at the time and her attentive.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
I don't even know how to explain how strange of an experience this was. If I could rate this place 2 plus stars I would because I think they seem to try. The roach on the toilet seat- I'll stop there. Just might want to see if you can find an alternative would be my suggestion. My husband didn't tell me about the small German roach living on top of the toilet seat until we had left the restaurant and all I can think about is how that's so indicative of a bigger issue.

Yelp
Best food I've had in San Juan. Amazing ambiance. Delicious, meticulously-crafted drinks, and a staff that truly understands hospitality.

Yelp
What a lovely little place. I came here by myself after working a long and exhausting photo shoot. It was the perfect spot to get a bite and relax. The plates are small and it was so nice to have a cocktail and little spicy tuna tartar snack. I would definitely bring friends here if I ever came back to old San Juan.

Kati H.

Yelp
A hidden little gem in the heart of old SJ. The drinks were so tasty - and the bartender was great! We stumbled in after dinner one night and would definitely come back!

Yelp
If you like tapas then a must try a lil twist from the island of Puerto Rico. Included in the love of cooking with delicious spices in each tapa
google avatar

Josh O.

Yelp
The drinks were pretty good. The ambiance was eh, if you can get a seat outside it would be better. This place is a room with two tiny balconies. The service was very good. The food was a miss for me. I didn't enjoy anything that I ate. This restaurant was a 3 for me but the service pushed it up a star.
google avatar

Weijia L.

Yelp
My second time here. The vibes were chill and the drinks were top-notch. When there's not that many people, the tapas arrive more quickly. The skewers (caprese and shrimp&pineapple) are always fun to eat. The papas bravas were decent. The tuna tartare is a must. The crostinis were not chunky, contrary to my fear. My rum sunset was nice and proper. Then I got the lanvender gin drink, which I loved. They lit the lavender twig when they presented you the drink. The fragrance really added something more to the experience. Plus it's exactly the type I like: not sweet, a bit botanical, and refreshing.

Yelp
So far so good , service and atmosphere , first time in Puerto Rico, but very impressed with customer service. Drinks are very tasty. Food is great.

Yelp
Cool space, great service and good food. The flaming drink was delicious. Would highly recommend

Yelp
This cozy bar is for cocktail aficionados and tapas lovers alike. Despite its quaint size, the ambiance is inviting, with a unique seating throughout the restaurant, especially with mezzanine seating setup that adds a touch of intimacy to the experience. While the service may not extend beyond the basics and not the most welcoming demeanor, it certainly didn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the visit. But let's talk about the real stars of the show here - the drinks. Crafted cocktails that are nothing short of amazing, each sip a journey of flavors and creativity. Another delight is their music! The vibe here is relaxing and chill, making it the perfect spot for our midday escape. Next time, we hope to visit at a later time to see how it is because we think it probably turns in a nice little hang out spot like a jazz bar. I am looking forward to my next visit here. If you go, you haveeeee to try El Maestro. The combination of flavors for this cocktail was mind blowing. I'm a whiskey drinker but I hesitated in ordering because of the combo of flavors listed but my boyfriend ordered it and I'm so happppy he did. I got the nice green--gin cocktail--and it was perfect! We also ate the sweet and tangy meatball tapas and patatas braves tapas--both simple and delicious. We can't wait to try other things on our next trip.

Yelp
Apologize advance for the lack of photos. Came here to dine at night and the dining area is a bit dark where all it was hard to capture the perfect pic. However I noted everything I ordered and my thoughts. Patatas Bravas (with Bacon) - pretty much like potatoes you would get at a brunch places covered in bacon (the meat we selected) and sauce. Was very good and light we cleaned up the entire plate. Meatballs - simple and yet sooo delicious. Soft meatballs with a BBQ favor sauce. Sauce wasn't strong like your average BBQ sauce. Tuna tartar - Never had it served like this on a slice of cucumber but it was refreshing. Perfect bite size. Taco - ended up with the carnitas taco as they were out of the fish taco. Favor was good but meat was a bit on the salty side. Overall it was still enjoyable. Sauce was just enough where it didn't feel drenched in sauce. Ceviche - chunks of fish and onions. A bit too much lemon for me though but the chips went nicely with it. Coqui Coqui drink was good. Fresh a the waiter came by and charred the coconut on top. Moscow Mule was yummy. Prefectly made with just enough of alcohol/ginger beer/juice mixed. Def one of my fav spots while in old San Juan. Note the place is pretty tiny.

Yelp
Cute little place to get a few drinks and apps. Not a proper sit down dinner but pretty cool vibe

Yelp
This was a really cute find! Loved the vibe, the ambiance, the setup. Wonderful place to get some cocktails and tapas to go with. We got guava cosmo and tuna tartar, patatas, shrimp and pineapple. Everything was mighty delicious. Service was nice, they allowed us to sit back, savor and enjoy the evening.

Yelp

Yelp
The server, Julianna was so nice and gave me tons of recommendations as I told her I was on a solo trip. She was closing down but still made conversation with me and took time to answer all my questions about the menu. I had the Boriken cocktail and Margherita pizza. Both were delicious!

Akanksha ..

Yelp
Decided to hop in to this place for a quick drink and bite and we were not disappointed! Highly recommend the patatas bravas and the Mac and cheese
google avatar

David V.

Yelp
I called and got no answer but immediately received a text saying not taking reservations come right in. What a waste of time! We were right around the corner so we walked right over. When we got there we stood in-front of a yellow chain for 5 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we were there. Then in a very snarky tone just said we are full! No hello, no can I take your name nothing. I would not have written this review but we came here a few days ago and got the same guy with the same attitude. No thank you Mezzanine
google avatar

Marialys P.

Yelp
It's on the second floor, sometimes they have the windows open and you can sit on the balcony. The appetizer tacos de Carnitas were delicious and the drinks too. It reminds me of a 50's apartment. The staff is friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the drinks were beautiful! Tapas were great for sharing or ordering 2 to fill you up. Our waiter was very polite and gave good recommendations. Would definitely be nice for a date, since most of the seating is for two people. Probably not great for groups larger than 4.
google avatar

Meghna S.

Yelp
My biggest gripe with this place is feta cheese in Ceviche. Like who would do that? Basic of ceviche is a raw sea food marinated in lime juice to give that tangy taste. How does adding cheese help? It was a bummer for sure and spoilt my dinner. The only thing that made up for it was the spicy mezcal margarita that the bar tender made, it was pure love and one of the best cocktails in my trip there. Overall the menu is basic and limited. No doubt the place has a beautiful ambience, the place has an old world charm and definitely good service, so worth a try.

Cynthia R.

Yelp
Nostalgic venue with fantastic drinks. Great ambiance. Service was great as well. Gave us a brief history of the building. Would definitely return again.

Yelp
Intimate setting with awesome view of the multicolored buildings. amazing. Would go again
