The 8 Best Hostels in Tokyo (Updated 2025)

"I stayed in the heart of Shibuya at this high-tech, pricier hostel and appreciated its coworking area with abundant seating, outlets, speedy Wi‑Fi and private booths for calls; the smart beds that elevate with a button and the fantastic rain showers felt very modern, and they provide many free amenities (slippers, towels, toiletries, earplugs, charging cables and adapters). There are lots of common areas including a rooftop terrace, a fully equipped kitchen with free coffee/tea, and free beer every evening from 5:30–6:30pm." - Matthew Kepnes

The Millennials Shibuya is one of the most stylish and innovative places to stay in Tokyo. The concept of smart “pod” rooms is amazing—each capsule is clean, modern, and surprisingly spacious. You can control the lighting, bed position, and even the alarm with an iPod, which makes the stay both fun and convenient. The location is perfect, just a short walk from Shibuya Station and all the famous spots like Shibuya Crossing and Center Gai. The common area is beautifully designed, offering a relaxing space to work, read, or meet other travelers. Free beer during happy hour is a nice touch too! The staff are friendly, professional, and speak great English. Everything feels safe, comfortable, and well-maintained. It’s the perfect mix of style, comfort, and technology—definitely one of the best capsule hotel experiences in Tokyo!

Really cool capsule hotel. Very organized and clean. Staff were friendly and engaging. Would stay again. Showers and bathroom were spotless. Mixed gender and single gender floors available. Breakfast was tasty and had both fruit, pastries, eggs and sausages. I really liked the availability of hot drinks like matcha coffee were included in my stay in their 24 hr lounge area. Free luggage storage for the next day was very helpful as well.

I really like the design concept of this place: modern, convenience, but you still get the privacy. The bed is very comfortable, the temperature was ok. There is a small vent on the ceiling but I'd prefer is to be a bit cooler. I noticed that people mentioned that they were waken up at night due to noise, but I slept likea baby!!! They do provide earplugs if needed right when you walk out of the elevator. The common area where you can meet people. There is also a working space. I had to take a call during my vacation and the working space was great. It's definitely on the pricier side but it worth it.

Really modern and stylish capsule hotel right in the heart of Shibuya. The staff are very friendly and helpful, everything is spotless, and the bed is extremely comfortable. The atmosphere is very international and great for meeting new people. The breakfast is also very good and can be booked separately.

Any one who is travelling solo and love meeting new people then this place is a good to place, Everyone i met was soo cool. I made few friends for lifetime. im soo glad I chose this place. I usually never write the reviews. But this place and the people made me feel good about me. Breakfast was OK but I would still rate them 5 star

I highly recommend this place as a luxury hostel option. I spent a week here, and it was so good. It is definitely quite pricey compared to the other hostel options, but totally worth it. The beds are super comfortable, and private. Showers and toilets are clean. And the location is amazing! The free beer hour every night is great for meeting people, and makes it very easy to find plans for the evening! Thanks for having me!

I liked this experience fine, and I would recommend it — if you want this capsule hotel experience. I thought the facilities were clean and in good working order. I thought my bed was comfortable, and that the staff were plentiful and helpful (they helped us find and plan an evening activity). Here are things I think could be improved. The capsules don’t have doors; rather, they have shades. This means you can’t “lock” your capsule either from the inside or outside, and it means that noise is easily heard from other people moving and talking on your floor (I was awoken in the night by loud talkers — earplugs are a must). I also think the capsules need some shelves or cubbies. I had trouble staying organized. And I would appreciate multiple common areas, because the one common area had loud music playing all the time.

This is hands-down the best place to stay around Shibuya at the ~70 €/night mark. Considering the location, the amenities, and all the items provided free of charge 24/7, nothing really beats it. If you’re a foreigner staying less than a week and want to explore the surrounding area, this is the place to book—100%. You can tell it was built with real enthusiasm and great attention to detail, from hygiene to practicality. They clean and disinfect daily, and an air filter runs constantly, so the air quality is exceptional. Showers are spotless and modern, and the toilets are the most advanced I’ve seen in Japan: self-opening, flushing, cleaning with soap, plus all the usual high-tech features. Everything works, and supplies are always restocked. A small tip: don’t bring too much luggage. The capsules have surprisingly high capacity, but it can feel cramped if you try to manage too many items. I’m a very skeptical and critical person, but everything I checked in this hotel made me think: “Hmm, that makes sense. This is really well done.” Ignore the 1-star reviews. They’re either from people who didn’t use common sense or who skipped the 2-minute intro video. For this price—especially in an area where rent soars above 2,000 €/month and hotels often start at 150 €/night—this place is an absolute steal.

Yelp
I stayed here recently for one night. This was probably the most comfortable hostel I've stayed at in Tokyo! Hands down! No competition! First off, location! Right in the heart of Shibuya. Within easy walking distance to the famous Shibuya Crossing and all that the area has to offer. Check-in was a breeze, especially because the front desk reception staff speak very good English! 4th floor was where the check-in reception desk is as well as, the communal kitchen and lounge is. Did I mention free beer is provided during "happy hour" every day from 5:30pm to 6:30pm? LOL When I got to my bed, it was very comfortable. The bed itself is controlled by an iPhone mounted on the wall. It controls the beds position; you can have it lie flat or sit upright at a slight angle. There's also an alarm function which I thought was really cool. Instead of playing music, you can have the bed automatically change to the sitting up mode in about ten seconds when you want to wake up. :O I was taken aback by how secure each residential floor felt. Cameras everywhere in the halls. Shower and restrooms in separate rooms. The showers had excellent water pressure and the toiletries provided like shampoo, conditioner and body wash were of high quality as well. And like most of Japan, facilities were all very clean! On the 3rd floor, there's a large room where you can work, and has a sink and hot water maker with a rack full of various teas. There's also a separate private room where you can have work meetings and stuff. Lockers are also on the 3rd floor where you can lock up your smaller items and it'll stay secure until you check-out! Overall, this was a very pleasant stay. I will definitely come back when I visit Tokyo again!

Yelp
This was my first time in a hostel and Im in Tokyo, japan. Staff was friendly. The hostel is so clean and full of amenities for travelers. Restrooms and showers were clean. Bed was comfortable. Would definitely recommend for a stay.

Yelp
A great place to stay at an affordable price! The bed is so comfortable and I love that you can fit your suitcases perfectly under the bed. The amenities and facilities are great, and you honestly get a great nights sleep while being steps away from all Shibuya has to offer! I stayed on the women's only floor but there are co ed floors too! Will definitely be back the next time I'm in Tokyo!

Yelp
The location was exactly where all the magic happens in Shibuya. All shopping was located a block away. So much to do! The facility exceeded my expectations. With the time difference, I woke up anywhere between 4:00am-6:00am and I would go straight to the shared working space to work. Grabbed an espresso from the kitchen and worked until breakfast pastries were served at 7:30am. The pressure of the shower heads were amazing. I love the privacy room we have attached to the shower. Such a clean facility. The toilets were awesome too. I'm pretty sure the toilet seats are heated. I loved having a washer and dryer on-site to use on my floor. The bed... was my favorite. It was very comfortable. The alarm clock: I really like using the lighting option for my alarm. Instead of having an alarm on my phone that will wake others around me, you have the option to have the light turn on to wake you or have your bed automatically sit up. Yes! The bed moves in couch position or flat position.

Yelp
tldr: Do NOT stay here, if you actually want to sleep at all! I can't stress this enough, no matter how cheap a room is here, you will not sleep comfortably. Don't sleep here. Stay at a normal capsule hotel. Cons (their are a lot): - Rooms are SUPER HOT, you have no control over the temperature. We asked the staff to adjust the temperature many times and nothing changed - Rooms have no air flow once your shut in. I could barely breathe every night - Room length is very short, technically you will fit but good luck moving around at all - Getting in/out of rooms is noisy, slow, and clumsy. When you sleep the bed has to lay flat, this covers the curtain in front of your room though. So to get out you have to go into sofa mode. When you have to use the restroom at 1 am in the morning, the procedure of getting out and fumbling for the controller in the dark is HORRIBLE. - It's loud! I don't care how quite everyone is being, it's loud. If everyone is quiet it's actually worse, because a curtain going up to let someone out of a room is even louder in the quiet. The curtains and shape of each room don't dampen noise at all. Every cough, shuffle, and pee break is heard through the night. I've stayed at capsule hotels with more people that are way quieter in their setup - Accessing your luggage is awkward because you have stand in the middle of the hallways in other people's way. It also gets VERY loud if someone wakes up early to leave and their luggage is right in front of your room. Actual capsule hotels don't have this problem because your luggage is in a separate area - No area once bed is laying flat for your stuff. The only place is a small shelf on the back of the wall. But once your in bed mode laying flat, it's VERY high up and hard to access, especially in the dark. Regular capsule hotels don't have this problem because they have controls built into the wall Pros: - Showers/bathrooms are very clean and nice. I would honestly stay here just for them. But the rooms are so bad, I won't - Decent amount of space for luggage under bed, but still awkward - Friendly staff - Quick check in - Clean facilities - Decent breakfast? But I have to be honest, why would you stay here for the breakfast. You're in Tokyo, go out and try 1 of the 100+ cafes with unique food

Yelp
Really loved this upscale capsule hotel. Maybe it's because it's new but it was so incredibly clean, including the common areas eg the bathrooms, showers etc. you get an amenities bag as well which includes toothbrush ear plugs etc and the showers have shampoo and conditioner. WiFi is free and dependable. There is also a laundry machine and dryer (need to pay to use) - runs on coins but you can easily get change at the front desk. They were also flexible on check out up till 1pm, so you just bill an extra 1000? Yen I think it was for each hour past 10am checkout. The beds are also great and the iPod controls were kind of fun, though I was definitely scare of losing my iPod hahaha. They are your entry into the building, your floor, and control your bed (couch vs flat) and lighting in your pod. So definitely not good to lose (also hefty fee if you do lose...like 25000 I think?). Only suggestion is that they make more lockers so all the guests can have one if needed (they ran out by the time we checked in, and while you can store luggage with front desk they aren't available eg you can't access in late hours eg midnight to 6am).

Yelp
This was a larger more modern version of a capsule hotel. There's a common area to hang out at until bed time, which when you would head to your designated floor and capsule. You store your luggage under the bed, unless if it does not fit then the front desk staff will happily hold it for you while you have the necessities in your capsule. Keep in mind the capsule room is supposed to be kept really quiet for sleeping neighbors so it's easy to be loud going through your luggage, zipping and unzipping things, going through plastic bags, whispering, and even opening and closing the screen to your pod...it can all be heard! The smart pods (capsules) are all operates by iPod (lights, bed and air), so it must be kept on you as it's your key to use the elevator to get on your floor. Some capsules offer a projector to watch tv or movies, for an extra charge. The hotel is very clean! I was impressed. The bathrooms, showers and capsules included. Breakfast only included breads and pastries, as well as coffee. It is also required to wash your own dishes and put them back where you found them if you do choose to have breakfast. The staff was very friendly and will happily hold your luggage after or before checkout. (We came back around 8pm to pick up our luggage before heading out). It was a nice experience of a capsule hotel. We stayed two nights and that was more than enough.

Yelp
Stayed here for almost a week recently, and with it being a very busy time in Japan I wasn't sure how good the accommodations would be. I'd heard great things from people all over the World and I gave them a shot and I'm so glad that I did. You feel completely in the center of things if you're looking to stay in Shibuya, just a few moments walk from the station and crossing. In between a ton of different stores, restaurants and unique shops and sights. I spent a lot of the evenings just walking the few blocks around the capsule hotel. Staff was excellent and spoke both English and Japanese. It was great to use the 3 phrases I know during breakfast and chatting with them. The hotel feels extremely clean and is proof that humans can co-exist in a small space and still have things be in amazing shape. Will definitely be back here on my next trip to Tokyo!

Yelp
This hotel was amazing - make sure you go downstairs to the happy hour. You will meet an amazing host of people and get some free beers to chat. You will check in and receive an iPod from the front desk (the iPod controls your bed, lighting, fan, etc). You need to have the iPod to get into the hotel as well. It's very well taken care of and I really really enjoyed the experience. If I go back to Tokyo and I'm with a group of friends I would definitely stay here. Not a good place for families! Afterwards check out a standup sushi bar and close by karaoke! Such a cool hotel.

Yelp
Great place to stay if you are younger, want a coworking space in a hotel, and dont mind sharing space with others. I am a very light sleeper, so I slept with earplugs in + bose wireless headset + blasting white noise. Do not stay here if you are a light sleeper, or if you are like me, bring all the headphone materials necessary. The location is great, walking distance from harajuku and Shibuya train station. I love how there's a WASHER AND DRYER here, which helps immensely if you are trying for 3 weeks on a carry on (like me) MY ONLY COMPLAINT: i saw couples staying together? This should not be allowed. It should be one person per space. There was this older indian couple staying in capsule next to me and they would not stop talking at night! The older man was on his phone for a while... there should be specific rules not to allow couples to stay together and not to have phone convos in your capsule. It was highly inconsiderate

David B.

Yelp
Probably the best hotel I've ever stayed at. Everyone is very friendly and help you around Tokyo. They have free breakfast which is a plus and it's surprisingly quiet at night even though there's no doors to separate the bunks. It's located close to Shibuya station and walking distance from the famous Shibuya crossing. I will definitely come back and would recommend to everyone.
