Mistley Thorn, Mistley, Essex - Explore & Book

"What do Vincent Price and Mistley Thorn have in common? Well, Mistley Thorn stands on the site where the notorious Witchfinder General held his witch-hanging trials in the 1640s, and Vincent Price played him in the 1968 movie. But perhaps the real sorceress in the story is Sherri Singleton, a can-do Californian who refurbished the rundown pub and turned it into a smashing restaurant. It has garnered rave reviews for its seafood and has a buzzy bar that the locals love. With its spacious, contemporary bedrooms (a couple with fine views of the Stour Estuary), the Mistley Thorn makes a delightful lure to this corner of East Anglia.Mistley itself was destined to become a spa town and several structures still bear the distinctive Georgian designs of Robert Adams - the circular water basin opposite the Thorn with its graceful metal swan is one of them. Swans are symbolic here - you need only to stroll along the estuary edge to view a bevy (and that’s the correct term) of these beautiful birds. Highs Comfortable rooms with kingsize beds and ensuite bathrooms. We loved the river view from our top-floor roomReputable restaurant with fresh seafood and seasonal, locally sourced ingredientsSmall, lively bar that draws a local crowd, especially for the oysters and prosecco!Friendly staff in both the restaurant and hotel; when Sherri is around she makes an effort to chat with guestsA wonderful on-site cookery school with regular classes and a tempting gift shop Lows Some of the bedrooms are above the bar/restaurant and sound can travel up if it's a busy night (although everything winds down by midnight)The inn faces a road but traffic is minimal Mistley is a small town with only a few shops and pubs - and a train stationThe cookery school building is situated across the road, but this means bigger rooms" - Glenda Richards

We didn't stay here, but stopped for something to eat and drink while passing through. Friendly, helpful and customer focused staff. Our drinks were served while our food prepared, we had arrived 5 minutes before the kitchen opened. Superb sourdough bread and the chefs chutney tasty. We also liked the handout skin on fries - crispy. We sat outside, traffic didn't bother us and the view was great.

We booked this hotel on the basis of its location for a 5 night stay as a base to tour Essex and Suffolk area. It looked comfortable based on the photo's on their website. when we arrived we discovered everything is exactly as it seems in the photo's clean and very comfortable. We also discovered that the restaurant offered a lovely and varied menu, the food quality presentation and price was excellent. The service factor from all the staff we interacted with was quite simply excellent; attentive to your needs, helpful in meeting any specific needs, as locals very wise to the area and places to see. The owner I believe is North American, but the level and quality of service her business aspires to in my opinion is everything you would hope for in the very best of British country Inns. It was quite simply a very pleasant and very enjoyable stay.

Came here on my repatriation to the UK after time living in the Middle East. This was one of a 'blitz' of eating out over those next two weeks, returning to familiar haunts and eateries, so a good opportunity to contrast and compare the various dining experiences. My wife had been here the week before and had thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I had not eaten at the Thorn for about 15 years. Wow, what a meal! Out of all the places we 'blitzed' recently, this was the best. We both had the three-way salmon for starters, followed by the tacos (my wife) and plaice (me). We then shared a a Bakewell pudding and ice cream dessert. Brilliant! See you again very soon!

We came here for a Sunday roast after being recommended and it was incredible - couldn't fault it at all! The beef was delicious and tender, and the roast potatoes were very flavoursome. We'll definitely be back again soon. (Also love that they're so dog-friendly and accommodating for dogs!)

A super experience from start to finish. We stayed one night and enjoyed Dinner and Breakfast. Our room was really a "suite" on multiple floors. Comfy bed and real character to the rooms. Velux roof windows gave an intriguing skyline view. Food was the real highlight. From lovely home made bread right through the main course (fish tacos for me and veggie for my wife) everything was on point. Great wine list. Even the Adnams was actually cheaper than many local pubs!.||Breakfast was another highlight. Spot on bacon and sausage and nice spicy beans. Again bread was lovely. Overall a well balanced vegetarian option also suited my wife. Can't really cover everything so I'll leave it there. Highly recommended.

Popped in here for a snack, ended up having lunch. The Sea Bass was as fresh as the one I caught a few weeks back and tasted sublime with mushrooms, sweetcorn, crispy sage and truffle oil. Shame this place is not a bit closer to home, its a gem😋

We stayed at The Mistley Thorn in June and had a great time. It is located very conveniently for both seaside resorts and Constable country. Our room was spacious, well appointed and comfortabe with a lovely view over the River Stour estuary. Their restaurant is a crowning feature in our opinion. Great food, excellently prepared and served. Seafood is a main feature - oysters, scallops, prawns and a range of fish dishes. Every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. Recommended.

Really comfortable room and spotlessly clean. |Food in the restaurant is delicious and fairly priced. On a Thursday night it was packed with a great atmosphere. Staff were friendly and welcoming. |A great stay and we would definitely recommend.

Yelp
I've eaten here so many times over the years (pre Yelp) that it seems heresy to give it a 3. I have to though, the food wasn't great, the service was poor and all in all for a Christmas get together with the in laws it wasn't great. Desert was the highlight. I feel rotten giving you a 3 Thorne as you've been great in the past, just not this visit.

Yelp
Had a lovely dinner here. Great atmosphere, very good service (which is often lacking in U.K.) and great food. Very seafood orientated which we love and lots of local specials. Had 2 course for £13.95 - leek soup then jake fillet. Hubby had mussels and then cuttlefish. Lovely drive around the river front too. We will be back again.

Yelp
I took my partner to the Mistley Thorn for a romantic getaway. I really couldn't have chosen better! The room that we had overlooked the river, and was decorated impeccably in an American East Coast style it was beautifulhuge with big fluffy towels, dressing gowns, gorgeous toiletries and homemade biscuits. Our deal was room, dinner, bed & breakfast and the dinner was absolutely superb. The owner sources ingredients as locally as possible and everything is fresh and full of flavour. the french toast with bacon for breakfast was out of this world!!

Yelp
A beautiful charming ambience in a bistro style restaurant. Menu is fish orientated, heavily focusing on specials of the day. Both the sea bass and cod were wonderfully cooked and perfectly seasoned. The plates well presented and decent but not oversized portions.. But save room for the deserts, which were delicious. Service and staff were excellent and attentive without being over fussy. Wine was a little overpriced and tables tucked a little to close together but that was the only minor minor criticisms in an otherwise excellent evening.
