Mistley Thorn, Mistley, Essex - Explore & Book

"What do Vincent Price and Mistley Thorn have in common? Well, Mistley Thorn stands on the site where the notorious Witchfinder General held his witch-hanging trials in the 1640s, and Vincent Price played him in the 1968 movie. But perhaps the real sorceress in the story is Sherri Singleton, a can-do Californian who refurbished the rundown pub and turned it into a smashing restaurant. It has garnered rave reviews for its seafood and has a buzzy bar that the locals love. With its spacious, contemporary bedrooms (a couple with fine views of the Stour Estuary), the Mistley Thorn makes a delightful lure to this corner of East Anglia.Mistley itself was destined to become a spa town and several structures still bear the distinctive Georgian designs of Robert Adams - the circular water basin opposite the Thorn with its graceful metal swan is one of them. Swans are symbolic here - you need only to stroll along the estuary edge to view a bevy (and that’s the correct term) of these beautiful birds. Highs Comfortable rooms with kingsize beds and ensuite bathrooms. We loved the river view from our top-floor roomReputable restaurant with fresh seafood and seasonal, locally sourced ingredientsSmall, lively bar that draws a local crowd, especially for the oysters and prosecco!Friendly staff in both the restaurant and hotel; when Sherri is around she makes an effort to chat with guestsA wonderful on-site cookery school with regular classes and a tempting gift shop Lows Some of the bedrooms are above the bar/restaurant and sound can travel up if it's a busy night (although everything winds down by midnight)The inn faces a road but traffic is minimal Mistley is a small town with only a few shops and pubs - and a train stationThe cookery school building is situated across the road, but this means bigger rooms" - Glenda Richards

We stayed at The Mistley Thorn in June and had a great time. It is located very conveniently for both seaside resorts and Constable country. Our room was spacious, well appointed and comfortabe with a lovely view over the River Stour estuary. Their restaurant is a crowning feature in our opinion. Great food, excellently prepared and served. Seafood is a main feature - oysters, scallops, prawns and a range of fish dishes. Every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. Recommended.

Really comfortable room and spotlessly clean. |Food in the restaurant is delicious and fairly priced. On a Thursday night it was packed with a great atmosphere. Staff were friendly and welcoming. |A great stay and we would definitely recommend.

Unfortunately service and friendliness lacking. |As ever food is magnificent. However recently I’ve noticed that’s not welcome and no thank you when leaving. Takes sometime to get a welcome at the table and a while to order first drinks. White wine not cold by bottle. 2 items from our food selections were returned and although rectified there was no gesture even to remove a beer from the bill. Food was very nice apart from the raw French beans missing the garlic, and cold pudding but was put right.

Without a doubt one of the finest places we have stayed a real sadness to leave ....We arrived with some little concerns having read previous comments from dissatisfied customers however they were dispelled immediately on entering the premises the staff were brilliant so helpful and friendly.|The room was lovely absolutely spotless and the food was unforgettable from Lunch to Dinner and Breakfast absolutely first class supported with a wonderful wine list which won't break the Bank ......It was a real pleasure and we will be back soon

I recently visited The Mistley Thorn and had a fairly average experience. The location is nice, with a pleasant atmosphere, and the building itself has some charm. The menu had a decent selection, and the food was fine—nothing particularly outstanding, but it was well-prepared. Service was acceptable, though it felt a little slow at times. The staff were polite but not especially engaging. Prices were on the higher side for what was offered, but that’s to be expected in a place like this. Overall, it wasn’t a bad experience, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression either. It’s an okay spot if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again.

The food is stunning, I live 100 miles away and this is my favourite restaurant- fish, mussels, oysters. Superb! Service is exemplary, go here!

We had a table for 14 on Saturday 1st February 2025. We also had two rooms, one of which was the apartment. Firstly we would like to say a great big thank you to all the staff who looked after us, they were all excellent. We are rather a noisy boisterous bunch. The food was excellent, and everyone had a really enjoyable time. Our room, and the apartment were both really comfortable, and it was lovely not to have to drive home. The man at the bar kindly found us a table in the evening, just for drinks, and some cheese, which was very kind as the restaurant was very busy. Breakfast was excellent. We will definitely be back soon.

My room experience at the Mistley Thorne wasn’t great, I was given room 8 in the attic, very sloping ceiling in the bathroom and hallway which I kept banging my head on , |No view at all only the roof |I was on my own so would have been better in a smaller room.|The room felt a bit spooky if I’m honest I didn’t like it at all,|I felt they’d put me up there because I was there for a few days so staff didn’t need to keep traipsing up to the attic to change beds for one night stays. Room 8 is a no from me..|Breakfast…no juices on the help yourself table, I had to ask for orange juice but I didn’t ask until the 3rd morning ( my fault I should of asked sooner) it should be offered or on the buffet table.|Breakfast was nice but no condiments on the table you have to ask for sauces.|Last morning they had run out of avocados, beans just basics.|When I came down for breakfast on the last day no table was set, no bowls on buffet table for cereal , no cutlery.i had to ask for everything it was only 9 o’clock and breakfast runs until 10.30. |Room a definite no from me very spooky in your own,|The food was nice
