We drive from Vancouver to Calgary a lot, and very rarely stop in Revelstoke (when we have, it was at the Subway on the highway). This time, the trip was Kamloops to Calgary, and Revelstoke became a logical place to stop for lunch.
I fired up Yelp and found Modern Bakeshop: Six of eight reviews were five stars. The first review I read told me they have the best hot chocolate out there. This place is buried downtown, and I *never* would have found it without Yelpers. And that would have been a shame.
I imagine it gets very busy here, but for the most part the seating seemed adequate. (I think there was even more seating downstairs, though I never looked.) Our food came fairly quickly: we had the Vietnamese sub, the Briellini panini (I think -- it had turkey and Brie on it), a hot chocolate, and a hazelnut latte. The sub was as expected; not great, but good. The panini was fantastic -- nice flavour, didn't fall apart, and the bread wasn't overdone like many paninis tend to be. The hot chocolate was fantastic, with chocolate bits, creamy foam, and chocolate whipped cream. Like Mulberry suggested, it really was the best hot chocolate of my life. The hazelnut latte was good -- a bit more foam would have been nice, but it tasted good.
This is what towns and cities need: places that make people stop. As I said, I never stopped in Revelstoke. From now on, I will every time, and it's to go to Modern.
