Was so pleasantly surprised at how nice our room was. Location is right downtown so we walked everywhere. The bed was extremely comfortable. Very large two sink bathroom with a large floor to ceiling tiled shower. The in room coffee was from a local coffee roaster. We brought our baby with us and they had a pack and play already set up for us in the room. Two extra pillows in the closet, which I always appreciate. Everything was very clean!

I spent 3 nights in a king suite at the Monarch in late July 2025. I have zero complaints and had a wonderful stay. The Monarch looks to be a mid-century highwayside motel that got a modern glow-up. Everything is new and clean and bright and the decor is charming. My room was MUCH more spacious than I expected -- they renovated two of the original motel's rooms into one suite, so I had an extra half-bath and a full living room in addition to a good-sized bedroom with a comfy king bed. One thing I liked about this stay was the perfect mix of attentiveness (let's say availability) and autonomy provided by the staff/owners. They texted me to confirm on the morning of my stay; I was able to request a ground-floor room via text and the staff checked me in remotely with my consent. They provided my room number and door code so I didn't have to stop in the lobby before I could get settled in; they stayed available by text for any requests or questions, and would check in via text each morning to see if I needed housekeeping. (I will add, these are all real humans doing the texting.) Location is great for whatever reason you're in Moscow: close to the university campus, easy access to the highways and bike routes out of town, and in the midst of downtown with all its shops and restaurants. My daughter lives in Moscow, and this trip was a solo one to visit her and take in a concert up in Spokane together. I will 100% be returning to this spot for future Moscow stays.

Great stay at an updated boutique style hotel. My only complaint was that the air conditioner was a bit fickle, and froze the person sleeping next to it, while the one further away felt hot. But that's expected with a wall unit. Other than that, the beds and room were comfortable and clean.

Excellent stay! I stayed for one night before departing on a backpacking trip, and then another when I got back, and both times I was never disappointed! The location was perfect, the air conditioning was on when entered, and the bed was extremely comfortable, helping me to get the the best sleep that I've gotten for awhile! A+++, would highly reccomend to anyone!

The Monarch Hotel is a refreshing break from the generic, corporate-run motels that usually dominate downtown. Family-owned and perfectly located in the heart of the city, it offers a rare mix of comfort, character, and genuine hospitality. From check-in to check-out, everything felt seamless. The staff were warm, respectful, and impressively responsive—even over text. Their attentiveness made us feel like welcomed guests in someone’s well-run home, not just another reservation. The rooms were spotless—crisp linens, no odd smells, and a layout that felt intentionally designed. The bed and pillows were dangerously comfortable, the kind that makes you sleep through alarms. Room service was punctual, professional, and always on point. What really sets The Monarch apart is its character. The design leans boutique luxury, with tasteful décor that clearly wasn’t chosen by a budget committee. You can feel the care that went into creating this space. And the location? Just steps from some of the best restaurants, shops, and cafés the city has to offer—all walkable. Bottom line: The Monarch Hotel is what happens when hospitality is done right. Clean, classy, and full of heart. Whether you’re here for work or a weekend getaway, skip the cookie-cutter chains—book The Monarch. You won’t regret it.

Walls/floors are thin, but that's easily remedied. CJ was great. I got a dog friendly room. Cute lobby with items to grab, lots of nearby food.

Google
It may have been a downtown motel that rents rooms by the hour at one time but now the rooms have been totally redone and are fantastic. The rooms are modern, clean, with tasteful simple decor. I found the bed very comfy. The rooms have all the amenities. The location is a stones throw from Main Street right downtown. Whether the price is a deal or too high may vary on your needs. The only thing that some quibble with is the volume of the heater unit. On medium it measured 60 decibels. Ear plugs are provided. I slept great without.

Google
The Monarch leads with location but the hotel comfort closes the deal. We were visiting campus for a reunion and being able to walk to almost all the events was a major bonus. At night, we sat by the fire and enjoyed a glass of wine (provided by us.) It is a lovely place and the staff was so accommodating, pleasant and met all our needs. I will be staying there again.

Yelp
First impression upon arrival, nice motel, very close to campus. Clean, sparse rooms with just the basics. Walking distance to U of I but also in the heart of downtown. Nice shops and restaurants all around that you can stroll to. Free parking. Coffee maker, fridge, microwave, and hair dryer in room. We felt very safe for walking in the area at night. Lots of food choices nearby. After a sleep we determined that the bed comfort was good to ok. Pretty solid and firm mattresses with white sheets and a thin blanket. Good temp control in room. Not too hot but not cold. Best part was check in and check out via text is amazingly convenient. Cons: paper thin walls, so we can hear noise from other rooms. Plus the noisy traffic on Jefferson Street is very loud since it's a very, very busy street basically all day and night. Noted at 11pm there is still constant traffic swishing by. Super Thin windows with tissue paper thin blinds so there is absolutely no noise buffering. Could also hear music beats vibrating through walls. Sorry your ear plugs do not protect from music vibrations since there is no definitive sound but still can feel the beat while not hearing lyrics. I'm a heavy sleeper but woken up by this noise after several hours sleeping is too much! Then in the morning around 5:30 AM, the noise started through the walls again with the neighbor's bedside clock alarm going off . The in-room provided alarm clocks suck...as ours unexpectedly went off by 6am as well!!!!!! Plus we could hear the neighbor's voices through the walls word for word in the morning. An additional improvement suggestion that I think is very important for personal safety: the owners should install a deadbolt in addition to a single swing bar lock at the top of the door that they currently offer. Since this motel does remote check in via text their door locks are pin coded. It is very unsettling to think how little security the physical doors offer with a single swing lock inside. I would've felt much more secure inside the room if they also had a manual deadbolt above the door knob. Noted, this accommodation was much less expensive than other places in the area that were double what we paid here. Still we paid well over $200 on a Friday night. This is bottom tier lodging for sure but a trade off in saving money while being in an excellent location. Thankfully the streets in this area appear safe. Location is excellent for convenience but maybe not rest. Beware.

Yelp
Rating hotels are a hard thing to do my standards are pretty high!! Nothing but great things about Monarch Motel friendly staff, easy check in and out, clean and nice room!! Everything we needed in the room , enough towels, clean clean, so close to restaurants, bars, fun things to get into, etc! We will definitely stay here again!

Yelp
Great, locally-owned hotel in the best location in Moscow! Walking distance to all the best downtown restaurants, the Co-op, and the U of I campus! I love the no-contact check-in and check-out via text message, and a code is used to enter your room rather than having a key you can lose. Downside- not great for light sleepers. The location is downtown near a major street, so you will hear some traffic noises starting around 5am. They do provide ear plugs, which is a nice attempt. Additionally, you will want to bring your own black out curtains if you are sensitive to light. The street light is bright and there are gaps around the border of the window that the blinds just don't cover. They are pet-friendly, but note that they don't allow your dogs to sleep on the bed. We brought our own dog blankets, though couldn't totally prevent the dogs from disobeying and jumping on a few times.

Yelp
A lot of road noise. Poor wifi. AC unit only partially worked. Room was clean, but very basic. Probably ok for a budget stay, but not as nice as reviews suggested.

Rosie B.

Yelp
Don't ignore the reviews saying the walls are thin. They provide a sound machine and complimentary ear plugs which I knew was a red flag. Our first night was fine but the second night when someone booked the room next to us yes it sounded like there was no wall at all and we could hear their every word. Which meant they could hear us too Location is great. Clean enough. Firm bed which works for some people.

Stacy. B.

Yelp
Quaint and charming. Very clean. Comfortable bed. Staff is VERY hospitable and accommodating. Highly recommend, and would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
Cute lobby and tasteful decor in the room, friendly staff. The bathroom was nicely updated however the shower is poorly designed. With no door, water gets all over the place. Easy parking, good value, clean place for one night. Overall would stay again or recommend.

Yelp
Good communication with them. They are a boutique type Motel. Room was clean and beds were comfortable. It is an older building that has been renovated for today's patrons. Location is laid out in a perfect place downtown Moscow close to quaint coffee spots, great eateries, breweries, bars etc. Downtown is ready for fall with white Christmas lights and pumpkins at shops doorsteps.

Yelp
Best kept secret in Moscow. This place is the place to stay. The management and owners are friendly and this place is swanky! Plus it's affordable!

Yelp
This is our stop on the way from Denver to Seattle, visiting friends. The rooms are clean and nicely appointed. There is some road noise from the street, but the proprietors have included a noise machine and a cute set of earplugs on the bedside stand. This looks recently refinished, with beautiful rugs, wooden side tables, microwave and fridge, and a super hot and refreshing shower. We even got in a great bike ride from here to Pullman Washington thru fields of the Palouse and the University of Idaho campus. We would stay here again.

Yelp
We have stayed here before. The rooms are great, and they really have done a nice job on the interiors. The outside is greatly worn, but the facility itself was probably new in the 50s. Door locks are push button coded, and actually more efficient than magnetic key--which can be misplaced, or just plain not work. Front desk college kids were all friendly, and the wifi worked great. Can't beat the location for historic downtown Moscow. Everything on Main is within walking distance. Not a reach to think we will stay here again...

Yelp
We had a very comfortable stay in a tasteful, spotless room in the heart of Moscow. It had all the amenities we needed including a desk to work at and great internet. I enjoyed the packets of Landgrove coffee so much I went around the corner to the Moscow Co-op and bought several bags to take home. And I appreciated the gay pride flag in the window. It is a bold choice given the attitudes of many locals, including my relatives, but I support businesses that welcome everyone.

Yelp
We love the Monarch Motel so much! When my family was going through the hardest time we will ever know, Monarch Motel made us feel so at home and were just amazing. We will never forget the kindness and generosity that they showed us. Words really don't do it justice, but we will always recommend them and remember this stay so warmly. Thank you, Monarch Motel. From my entire family.

Yelp
Friendly customer service. Clean up to date no frills rooms with comfy beds near downtown.

Yelp
This is a really neat boutique motel. I love how people are taking decades old motor inns and refurbishing them. Our room was cute and very spacious, but the shower was the coolest thing. The young college kids working the front desk were all very friendly and gave great recommendations for dining. It's right off main street downtown, and within walking distance to everything. Not surprisingly it is very busy on the weekends. But honestly once you park you needn't get behind the wheel until its time to head home. We really loved this place and will stay here again for sure.

Yelp
I'm giving the two stars to the nice staff. Super welcoming and very thoughtful. The decor was cute. Yes, cute came to mind. It is obviously an old hotel. Here is the very bad part. You can hear everything....and I mean everything. When the guest above you come back to the room above you in the middle of the night and the male party wants to put down the female party and then you know what....not pleasant at all. The room had a nice sound machine and I turned the ocean on over and over again.....sleep? That didn't happen. I feel badly about this. I don't like bad reviews. I want to look at this review as honest and a caution. I would stay again....but it would only happen if it was on the second floor. Awesome staff. Cute room.

Yelp
This is our second time staying at the Monarch. We've enjoyed both stays. The rooms are a clean design with fun retro furniture. Looks like they individually designed each room. The first time here we stayed in a room with two queen beds. This time we stayed in one of their king bedrooms. The king bedrooms are smaller in square footage than the two-queen rooms. The bathroom area is a little bit smaller as well. But both kinds of rooms were comfortable and well-appointed. This is in a fairly noisy area of town, right next to University of Idaho campus. We noticed both times that emergency vehicles seem to come down 6th Street frequently and often with lights and sirens. The Monarch has worked hard to keep the rooms quiet and comfortable with this in mind. Their blinds are excellent blackout blinds. And on each side of the bed there is a pair of earplugs. Both times we were here I put them to use because of the emergency vehicles. The hotel itself is pretty quiet. Sometimes I could hear steps outside in the halls or next door. But for the most part I could not hear the people around us. The coffee in the room is yummy! We did not take advantage of their dining discount on their restaurant across the street, so I can't speak to that. The front desk is responsive and helpful. The beds are very comfortable. The lines and perfectly crisp and clean. The fridge, microwave, and hair-dryer are all in good working order and are clean. The bathrooms are well maintained and very clean. We enjoyed our stays here both times. It's very convenient to University of Idaho campus. We would stay here again!

Yelp
This is the best hotel in Moscow, and it isn't even close. The rooms are beautiful, the staff is excellent, and the rates are incredibly reasonable. Also, the Monarch is right downtown, just across the street from Nectar, and only blocks from the university - all the other hotels are on the outskirts of town, way out by the mall. It's crazy to stay anywhere else, so stay at the Monarch!

Yelp
Everyime I've stayed its great! The rooms are all updated and the staff is super polite and friendly!

Yelp
Pros-the only place to stay downtown which makes most activities within walking distance, the remodeling is very nice, and the beds are super comfortable! Cons-because it is an older motel the walls are very thin (I could hear our neighbors conversation as if I were standing in their room) and the bathrooms are on the small side (can't be helped with the bones of the existing motel). I will say they do provide earplugs which is thoughtful. They are also a little on the spendy side compared with the other hotels in the area which offer more amenities and bigger rooms.

Latia D.

Yelp
My husband and I absolutely love this motel. It has been remodeled and is super cute. They treat us very well. We come here regularly during WSU football season and to visit our son who attends University of Idaho. Every morning I walk a half block to One World Coffee and then we walk over to the Breakfast Club for breakfast. We absolutely love Nectar, owned by the lovely people who own this motel. Great food!! But back to this hotel. Great location, close to all the important things in Moscow. Great service, really great!! Definitely our favorite hotel in Moscow and Pullman combined!

Yelp
I travel to Idaho at least once a year for business, and I used to stay in Lewiston. By chance, I stayed at the Monarch Motel in Moscow last year, and now this is where I stay every time I visit Northern Idaho. I'm just finishing up my second stay here, and I can't recommend it enough. The staff is friendly, the decor is super on point, and the location is great. I love being able to walk to the many great bars and restaurants in downtown Moscow. Will definitely be back again!

Yelp
Room was very nice and we enjoyed the time there. Newly remodeled room and bed was very comfortable. It is close to downtown and very close to people we were visiting. It seems like everything was within walking distance. We would definitely stay there whenever we're in Moscow. Bit of noise issue but when visiting a college town in early spring you have to expect a little noise.

Nalani P.

Yelp
All I can say is wow! For a few years now we have been needing a space to gather our friends and family. The Monarch Motel was nothing short of amazing. They offered contactless check in and check out, very hassle free! Their staff was incredibly attentive and provided anything we could have ever asked for. The suite is absolutely our go to for any future occasions. Sincerely, a very happy family!

Yelp
Unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed. We had stayed here about 10 years ago and it was pretty bad. We had heard that it had been renovated in a cool modern style, we we thought about giving it a try. The renovation is really just a paint job with cool new furnishings sadly. The walls are paper thin, and the improvements are just superficial at best. You would sleep better in your car. If you like sleeping in the street, you might do ok here. We could hear every noise, as if there were no walls. Light poured into the room because the blinds aren't really hotel type blinds. Our neighbor got a cab at 6am, and it sounded just like someone was knocking on our door. And we could hear every work anyone walking by was saying, and that is where the location becomes a pro and a con.

Yelp
Very cool retro-fitted hotel. Friendly staff. The best location. Will stay here next time I'm in town.

Michael K.

Yelp
If there were more stars, I'd check them too. The Monarch is a boutique motel, all done with mid-century modern flair. It looks like each of the rooms (I peeked) has its own unique furnishings. Mine had great air conditioning, a GREAT bed, and felt like home, only way cooler. The hotel is across from one of the best restaurants in town and around the corner from Main Street, so it's a perfect location. And the staff was super nice. I really wouldn't ever consider staying anywhere else.

Baldwin R.

Yelp
Friendly staff, great location, cool vibe, and reasonable price. What's not to like?

Pamela J.

Yelp
Love the Monarch. Great location. Nice rooms. Accommodating staff. Reasonably priced. We will stay here again.

Tony R.

Yelp
My wife and I came up last month for a dive meet at the University, with another couple, and really enjoyed our stay. Very nicely done rooms, walking distance to the University, restaurants, shops, friendly staff. The remodeling they have done of the old facility is beautiful and well done. They've done a great job! I would so much rather stay at a locally owned place like this, than one of the big, cookie cutter chains!
