We are locals, and this is our go to place for romantic and family getaways. We love the historic feel, decor and architecture. Beds are comfortable, bathrooms clean and well equipped. No a/c but that isn't a problem in Monterey. The streets of Monterey are noisy at night, but that's part of the vibe. The location is fantastic. Just step outside and you are in the mix. Use the covered parking garage across the street (hint: its free overnight on weekends). Find the spa, you won't be disappointed. The staff is welcoming and helpful. If you want ultra modern, go elsewhere; if you are a romantic, you will love it.

The room was clean, airy and enough space for 2 adults and 1 teenager. It was within walking distance to the Fisherman’s Wharf. We enjoyed our stay. First room we stayed in without air conditioning, but we didn’t need it. First room I’ve ever stayed in that had complimentary cotton balls and cotton swabs. I loved it!

I don’t usually leave reviews, but this place deserves a warning label. I stayed in room 404 on the “historic” side of the building, and it was an absolute nightmare. First off, no air conditioner, no thermostat, nothing - and it was in the high 80s outside. The room was basically an oven. I had to choose between roasting alive or opening the window, which introduced problem #2: the constant screaming of seagulls. They howl all day and all night right outside the window. Sleep? Forget it. Relax? Impossible. Live a normal life? Not here. To make matters worse, the staff seem completely aware of how miserable the experience is. They don’t even bother to ask “how was your stay?” when you check out, because they already know the answer: it was awful. If you value sleep, sanity, or even basic comfort, do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel - especially room 404 - at all costs. Edit after response on 08/21 - So basically, I should’ve known that your “standard” rooms come with a complimentary 24/7 seagull concert, and only by magically guessing a “deluxe” room would I unlock the secret soundproofing? Interesting. Too bad your website never mentions that — how exactly are guests supposed to know this insider information?

I love the location of The Monterey Hotel. 10 minutes from the wharf, where there's great food at the Sandbar & Grill. In addition, there are several good places to eat on Alvarado ST, just behind the hotel. The staff are great. The bed was comfortable. The big bathtub was awesome! I've stayed here in the past and will again in the future!

We have been coming here for a number of years - at least twice a year for work. The location is second to none, the staff is always helpful and polite (especially important as we often arrive late at night with 2 tired children). It's Monterey so there aren't really "cheap" hotels but we have been more than satisfied with the value. There is a lot to like in some of the more "historic" rooms but due to the age of the building, those rooms are sometimes an acquired taste. Nevertheless, we have enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this hotel.

Google
The location and proximity to downtown and the warf were the only redeeming qualities of this hotel. The staff was nice enough. No complaints there. But the rooms and amenities were pathetic. It seems like this hotel is riding in it's age and history as an excuse for a poor product. The rooms are tiny (but the bathrooms are nice and big). The windows in some rooms open to a concrete corridor where noises and voices from other rooms are amplified. And the seagulls noise gets amplified too, making it hard to sleep. The walls are also then so other rooms can be heard that way too. There is no breakfast at all. The fitness center is laughable and smells musky. And there is no air conditioning in the entire building. I do not recommend

We stayed here for one night, and for a night's stay we enjoyed the hotel. It is centrally located to coffee shops, restaurants, and only a short drive to the wharf and aquarium. The hotel is quaint, with a lot of charm, and our standard king room was small, but for an overnight stay it was just fine. The bed and pillows were very comfy, and the rooms don't have AC/heating, but we like to sleep in a cool room, so we kept the windows slightly open. Staff was very friendly, check in was simple, and we did use the $30 (a night) valet since we knew we wouldn't be needing our car during our stay, and we didn't want to have to park at one of the parking structures a block or so away. FYI, if you do want to use the valet, you will have to park in their "loading zone" which is not located near the main entrance, this is located in the back entrance and you will see a sign that'll let you know it's the hotel's loading zone. Once you unload your luggage, check in leave and leave your keys with the front desk and they will then take your car to their valet lot.

The customer service is top notch! The hotel is beautiful! The room was perfect and very clean. We will be coming back soon. It is definitely a place to go and relax at. Very quiet and peaceful. A lot of nearby shops and restaurants

Yelp
Can't say enough great things about their reservation team! Alison is an actual superstar and Courtney is an angel!! I highly recommend to book directly with the hotel team. They are kind, caring and concise. Thank you Alison & Courtney for making the reservation process smooth for my family and I! We'll see you soon!

Yelp
The hotel staff are amazingly polite and welcoming. They are the shining star of this hotel. The location is the next best thing. Alvarado Street is right there, you can walk to the wharf, and all of Old Town Monterey. The hotel itself is a budget experience and if you mentally prepare for that, you won't feel disappointed. The staff and the location make this hotel worth visiting again. The bed or the furnishings, not so much. It's clean, but not comfortable. But, you can spend your entire visit walking to so many things from here.

Yelp
My boyfriend booked a one night stay here on Saturday 6/29/24. I believe he said the room cost less than $400. It's still pricy though just for a night stay. The hotel was ok. 1.The elevator had a sign saying not to hold the door open too long or it will break down. 2. Our room was small and did not have A/C, microwave or mini fridge but we did have a ceiling fan. Apparently there are two type of rooms to book from online. They have historical and deluxe rooms. Deluxe rooms have the microwave and refrigerator. 3. When the ceiling fan was in use, it was loud. We had to turn it off so that we can sleep. 4. The walls are thin. 5. The hotel does not have parking onsite. You can valet your car for $30 day which is what we did or park at a near parking garage/lots. Overall, our stay was not bad. Location of the hotel is great. It's located near many restaurants and only 8 min walk to the Old Fisherman's Wharf.

Yelp
If you hate sleeping this is your place. We stayed in a cramped room on the second floor for the whole weekend and kept waking up every couple of hours from the non stop noise coming from our neighbors next to us, the loud floor boards creaking upstairs and the noise from outside. It's non stop. So if you have any anxiety issues, do not stay here. There's only one tiny trash can in the room which was quickly filled. The TV was only a laughable 28inches. There is also no parking as advertised (vallet only on some days) The only reason it didn't get a 1 star was the staff was nice and its within walking distance from everything. Oh and the jacuzzi room has a camera directly facing you, so there is no privacy.

Yelp
The positives: location, friendly staff, clean The negatives: hard to find "valet" loading area and the valet isn't available until 7:30 am (keep that in mind if you're wanting to leave early in the morning). The elevator rattles everytime you get to your floor (pretty scary) also there's a sign that says the elevator will break down if the doors held open too long...again, total red flag. The water pressure is non existent. Their breakfast consists of fruit and coffee, so don't rely on that. Honestly we felt like the hotel wasn't as advertised on their website. We had hoped it would have that "historic" charm..but frankly it's just dated. We were disappointed and will not be returning.

Yelp
This place was filthy when you walk in the door. The carpeting is stained and ripped, old decor, dirty furniture and non-functioning elevator on historic side. The only way to get to historic side, besides the stairs, is to take elevator on new side and then navigate outdoor stairs to historic side. First room we were in had an armoire that wouldn't open all of the way, making it impossible to get from one side of bed to another. There was only one nightstand with plenty of room for another. We requested to move to another room. Better but still sub-par. Terrible mattress, no chair, no luggage holder and broken coffee maker. Requested a new coffee maker and never received. Bathroom was tiny. Fixtures were discolored and paint was peeling. If staying more than one evening, had to request housekeeping to make bed, etc. Don't expect to sleep late because the seagulls are so loud, you'll be up by 6 a.m. This was more like a transient hotel rather than a historic hotel. Badly in need of remodeling and updating. Historic doesn't need to mean old and decrepit.

Yelp
A hotel that very conveniently located in the center of the towns hustle and bustle with nice staff. That's probably the only reason I would give this hotel two stars. I think for the price per night and maybe the fact that we came during a marathon weekend that it just didn't add up. It was around 360 a night. There is no AC or central heating. They do offer fans and heating units though. The deluxe rooms do have a fireplace to keep warm as well. The style of the hotel is very old Victorian and some parts definitely need updating in the rooms like the window shades. They even have a sign on the elevator that if left open too long it could break down. They don't offer complimentary water in the fridge. Shower pressure isn't very strong and the water in our shower was unfortunately running into the other parts of the bathroom. Great location but just the facilities themselves need to be updated.

Yelp
This is a historic hotel with some beautiful architectural elements, but it is run down. The shade in our room was torn. Windows open only four inches. No air conditioning in the entire building, and no heat! A portable heater is in the closet for use on cold nights. The elevator has a sign posted that warns the elevator will break if the doors are held open. This seems unsafe to me. Our door key-cards failed to work several times; had to return to the desk for replacements. The "breakfast" is bad coffee and a granola bar. At $240 per night, this place is definitely not worth it particularly since our room was so small that there was only 18 inches of walk space between the bed and walls. No hair dryer in the room.

Yelp
This hotel is everything as described. Cozy, historic, quiet and quaint. Hospitality has been respectful and honorable during my experience even whilst enduring a power outage. Fair play. Thank you for the support and strength that is needed to bring people to a strong, safe, comfortable place of rest/work.

Yelp
No phone No a/c No tv working Bad experience altogether Would not recommend ever. Came her for a nice night away with my wife. Awful decision

Yelp
An iconic hotel in a heart of the old town. It was build in 1917, it feels like Ernest Hemingway will just step in during his visit to Monterey. The hotel is old, not fancy, but very charming. No AC in the old building, it's not renovated and walls are really thin. A lot of the noise from the street during the night. I couldn't sleep without earplugs. Location is great, a lot of restaurants, bars, breakfast places, bakeries and coffee places. It is in a very short walking distance to a wharf. I loved this place and would definitely stay here, but, honestly, cannot recommend it:)

Yelp
No one is on the same page here is the most annoying issue. Also the rooms remind me of a Harry Potter basement shack that smells like a 109 year old grandma passed away in last week. For over $300 a night they NEED TO DO BETTER this is a joke. Definitely won't be coming back, I'd recommend doing yourself a favor and Hit the Marriott up across the street. Only thing they have going is the location. P.s. Sorry to be blunt but They're pathetic breakfast spread says it all.

Yelp
Absolutely everything about this hotel was great! Vintage hotel with some of the most beautiful furniture I've seen. The bathroom was beautiful and the room itself was smaller than most chain rooms, but perfect. The staff was friendly and helped us find parking nearby. A half-mile from the Monterey Pier, but a lot of restaurants and food places are closer than that. My only reason for four stars is there's no parking on site -- but free parking at a lot half-block away (overnight). There is a drop-off location at the rear of the building (on Calle Principal). Elevators to some of the rooms.

Yelp
I really enjoyed our stay here. The old, antique hotel was really a vibe and I loved it. The location was great, the staff was always friendly and nice. Our room was small but totally fine for the 2 of us. Minutes walk to the warf and so many restaurant options just a few steps away. I would definitely stay again. Our bed wasn't super comfortable but that's person preference I guess.

Yelp
Nice enough rooms, Perfect location, Completely underwheliming staff, story of one of my worst check in experiences, and abysmal service below for a warning and a laugh: Call before chek-in to inquire about parking, Hotel confirms Vallet Approaching the hotel, loading zone spots in front of hotel are taken, no Vallet to be seen... call front desk while circling block, Front desk attendant tells me of 3 more losing spots on Calle Pricipal (not the hotel address). I ask where that is, she tells me "its not the main one"... I ask it it the side street or a parallel street?... she tells me "C" "A" "L" "L" "E" "P" "R" "I" "N" "C" "I" "P" "A" "L"... then puts me on hold... After circling the block again on hold, one of the loading zone spots opened up, and I took it. No Valle, again, and had to bring my bags to to the receptionist by hand. The receptionist checks me in, then tells me I need to re-park my car in the alternate loading zone on Calle Principal because the valleys cannot take it from the front of the building.... I ask that she have my bags taken to my room while I repack for the Valle... and she agrees kindly. After circling the block, finding the spaces full, circling back again, I was able to park. I then Brough my key to the front desk (as there was no ballet present), deposited my key, and had to bring my bags to my room by had, as the front desk had failed to make arrangements for the bags. After finally settling down in my room, and looking forward to sleeping in, I get interrupted by a call from the front desk, informing me that the Vallets they staffed for HISTORIC CAR WEEK do not know how to drive stick, and that I would need to come repack my vehicle somewhere else, as they would have the police ticket my car if left in the loading zone. Then Manager politely tells me I can park in one of the public lots, and when pressed on how he would rectify this total laps in service front desk and Vallet service, He informed me the hotel would be happy to NOT CHARG ME FOR NOT PARKING MY CAR. I explained ho this was interrupting my entire vacation plan, and he informed me He was very sorry and very sure that NOT CHARGING for the VALLET NOT PROVIDED was totally sufficient. To add insult to injury, I must now wake up early to repack my car an make additional arrangements for moving it regularly, something that is ruining my stay in town. Again, the manager is 'Sorry' and happy to not charge for not parking my car. After paying this much for a room, getting worse-than Motel 6 Service is an ONGOING Disappointment with no stable alternate parking options near the hotel for the remainder of our stay.

Yelp
For what this hotel is...it's a 5*. This is a historic hotel so you have to understand you are staying in a hotel that is 120 years old. That is what makes the experience fun! If you want to stay at a modern hotel, that's fine but this hotel was exceptionally clean, well kept modernized. The beds were great. The room was great. The staff was great. It is located on a great street with a great coffee shop right next door, an old theatre across the street, and next to restaurants, etc. the location is perfect. The best part for my family was walking through the hotel looking at the grand staircases and lobby and thinking of all the history that it had. I would stay here again without question!

Yelp
This hotel had the strangest vibes. It's just old, instead of lovingly preserved, and that goes for both the more modern deluxe side and the historical wing. The staff was nice, but we really only encountered them upon check in. There's loading parking on the SIDE of the building, so don't expect anything fancy out front or even a traditional valet set up. The rooms either give you 90's grandma vibes if on the deluxe side, or dusty grandma from every other period before if on the historical side. The whole thing is covered in incredibly dingy carpet, and there is no AC, though some rooms have fireplaces. The whole thing about the elevator door is true, but to be fair, completely overplayed by some of these reviews. Really if you walk into and load the elevator in the time you do 99% of all other elevators, you'll be fine and it's not like the elevator is some tiny dated thing out of the 30s. The dingy carpet applies to the room, the furniture is beat up and overused, the beds incredibly stiff and there's just this weird energy to the whole place which (and I assure you I am not some paranormal believer) was felt by my partner, myself, and kids as soon as we walked into our room. Which funny enough, later on at night, some paranormal tour guide that was right below our window loudly went on with wild stories about how haunted this place is which I laughed at but unfortunately freaked out my kids but then given how none of us were able to sleep all night due to some weird feeling just made the whole place feel even more of a chore. I know this whole last bit is silly, but really, save your money and stay somewhere better. This place is completely not worth it.

Yelp
Please read full review before choosing where to stay in Monterey! Five stars for the staff! Juan, Hector, Josh and Allison! all of these staff served us with smiles and grace. If I had an establishment especially one that is struggling I would want staff that work this hard excellent hospitality! The hiring manager is doing something right. Hotel is one star though! I wanted to like this place. Unfortunately our "weekend" two weekday away from the city was ruined because of the hotel not having air-conditioning, not having proper ventilation, not having proper system for parking cars, and the extremely loud noise from outside. let me give you more detail. the number one thing the hotel needs to do is get air conditioning the rooms are very hot I think our room 423 was about 110° the first night I barely slept at all I was given two fans as requested but I still couldn't sleep because it was so hot. this is. in the "newly renovated side" Then 5 AM the garbage man was doing recycling and the recycling / garbage continued for three hours! when I mentioned and I said at least tomorrow will be better they said no it's every day of the week! The hotel should start taxing the city for noise complaints. I live in a very loud area and when i tell you this was excessive noise! unlike any other. also I'm wondering why is there no air conditioning is the city involved in that too like they didn't give them permits for it or something I'm unsure but there's no way that you can have a hotel that that's hot and then have such a loud recycling service outside and you can't even shut the window! The second night they moved us to an inner room without amenities so we went from a very hot room that had a refrigerator and a microwave to an inner room with no refrigerator and no microwave no view. And because I didn't sleep the first night we ended up going to bed early the second night so we didn't get to enjoy the town as we had planned on going out having a nice dinner and going to bed later on our second night but we were too tired to do so. in addition on our second day we asked for our car to be brought around from valet and the city gave us a ticket!!! I was told by one a staff not named that rarely happens maybe twice a year but then neighbor room told us that they got a ticket as well! we still paid for parking! and one of the staff asked me to call to deal with the ticket (name not mentioned) after saying Im not willing to deal with it on my own time staff handled it. I do hope that management can figure out the air conditioning and it would be nice to be compensated for two nights there. Maybe stay at a better sister hotel or get two nights in a cool room with amenities.

Yelp
What a little gem. We stayed in a historical room and enjoyed the proximity to restaurants and Fisherman's Wharf. It is a quaint and well-staffed hotel. If you enjoy historical architecture and a downtown feel then it's perfect.

Yelp
We had a deluxe 2 queen bed reserved and they told us they were going to upgrade our room to the historic suite.....we were bamboozled! Turns out they gave our room away and put us in the quarter where Quasimodo would sleep. Please do not come here, it's filthy, very outdated and just not worth the savings or the location. Wish we saw the Yelp reviews before booking into this dilapidated motel.
google avatar

Edlin U.

Yelp
This hotel is in desperate need of renovations; walls are thin, lots of electrical issues, no hot water in rooms and lots of footsteps during the night- rumors are the hotel is haunted.
google avatar

Aubrey W.

Yelp
The pictures really speak for themselves....we opened the door of our king bedroom into a wall and then went to open the wardrobe to find out it doesn't open the whole way and we found a 1992 Zenith tube TV-no microwave or mini fridge. The Bathroom was very tired and rundown not historic there's a difference. And the flickering lightbulb really was the icing on the cake...wtf
google avatar

Yelp
I couldn't give this place one star for the fact that the front desk guy was very helpful. However, this hotel is not worth more than 90.00 a night on its best day. There are many things that really need fixing The A/C or the lack of. They tried to tell me that coastal hotels don't have A/C? Lol, the Queen Mary has A/C, and you can't get more coastal than that. *No room service is offered. WTF? You must request room service, and even then, that's a hit or miss. The room fan broke during our stay, but they provided a cheap floor fan and heater. *There is no hotel parking! You must pay for parking down the street. I blame Expedia more than the hotel for the deceiving reviews.
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
For the price it wasn't awful but I don't know if I'd return. Staff was very nice. There is no parking besides vallet ($30) which is fairly standard for a downtown location. Room was decent but the fireplace in the room didn't work and the heat/AC didn't work either. Room was mostly clean but had a kind of body odor smell that made it feel not as clean. Bed was reasonably comfortable so I appreciated that.

Yelp
This hotel is perfectly placed for eateries and things to see, in Monterey. My mom and I easily walked everywhere we wanted to go. There is no parking, so you need to park at a nearby garage. The one we parked at was $12 per entry/max per day... We didn't have much interaction with the hotel staff, so I can't say much there. We were in one of the newly refurbished rooms. My mom loved the fireplace and enjoyed reading on the couch nearby. Yes, you can hear outside street noise and people in the hall, but it is an older hotel, so you should expect that. Overall, a pleasant experience.

Yelp
"This is why I should only trust Yelp!" Is what I said to myself right when we got into our room at this hotel. Going off Google reviews, this place had good reviews and sounded great as a "historic hotel" with a great location. Location was the only good thing about this . Walking distance to the wharf, lots of restaurants, and a short drive to everywhere else. This is a historic hotel and let me tell you that EVERYTHING IS SUPER HISTORIC.. the bed, tv, dressers, windows, etc. Our room also had two windows, one directly facing another room and the other one looking out 3ft into the walkway where people could look into our room lol. Lesson learned - Pay more for a better hotel!

Yelp
No bells and whistles, but a great place to stay Downtown, shower, lay your head, and head out and enjoy the sites! Staff was courteous. Albeit I had a very short overnight stay, I was happy to stay here. ,

Yelp
Cute, clean hotel. Horrible customer service from the time we checked in and checked out. Front desk staff was very cold and unwelcoming. They made us feel like we were a bother. My friend called down to the front desk around 2 pm. Asked for a little fan. Around 8, that night fan never arrived. Ok, no big deal. So my friend called down and very kindly asked them again for a fan. The front desk woman started badgering my friend about what time she called and asked for the fan. And basically calling my friend a liar. Saying she had been at the front desk all day, and no one ever asked for a fan. Why not just say ok, sure? Let me get you a fan. It would have been much simpler than playing 20 questions. I simply asked the front desk on our way out for the day....can someone come to our room today and change bedding and leave some towels. With a nasty scowl, she barks at me, "we don't have daily cleaning service!". Ok then......when we came back later that day that same woman was standing outside the hotel yelling at this man in his car saying something about you can't park her I'm going to have you towed!! He was a guest at the hotel! He said he wasn't parking he was simply waiting for his wife, who was walking through the lobby. Very odd experience.....won't be back. Lots and lots of other hotels that are friendly and inviting!

Yelp
I tried to book 3 rooms for 1 night about a week out. Somehow during the booking, 2 rooms were for the correct date and 1 was for the date I made the booking on. I called as soon as I got the "Thank you for you stay" email. I spoke to Jessica and she fixed everything right up for me!!! THANK YOU JESSICA!!!

Yelp
Upon arriving to check-in, we learned that there was no air conditioning. The weather was cool, so we didn't think it would be too much of a problem. The lobby smelled like cheap perfume cover up. When we got to our room, it smelled so gross and continued to smell musty throughout our stay. The room was dingy and very small--the door was like a foot from the bed. The blanket/comforter had stains. The carpet was gross, we never stepped on it with our bare feet. We found other people's hair in the shower. There was one window in the room, and it got uncomfortably warm during the night which made it hard for us to get a good night's rest. It was also noisy at night. You can hear other guests through the walls, especially the guests above us. We also heard garbage trucks early in the morning. The entire experience of staying there felt like we were in a poor, low quality assisted living facility for seniors. They try to sell the hotel as old town, victorian charm which is fine if it was at least clean. Needless to say, we won't be returning. Overall, we learned a valuable lesson to do more thorough research. We normally do, but I guess we really need to do deep research for older hotels like these. Photos of the hotel are deceiving. The positive reviews are confusing too--those guests must have lucked out and either got paid to leave a positive review or got a cleaner room. We tried to ask for a more pleasant room based on the photos that they use to advertise, but we did not get a response.

A P.

Yelp
First thing I noticed walking onto our floor, the red carpet is so dirty it's almost black in areas, then when I got to the room, I went to Look out the window and could barley see because it was so dirty. The walls are paper thin, so any noise in an adjoining room can be clearly heard. This portion is not the hotels fault, but the noise from the street is also very loud until about 2am. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Niall A.

Yelp
Location good. Parking two blocks away for $8/day on Parker. Rooms ok. Not as bad as reviews say. The noise from the street unbearable. Street noise. Cars screeching. Birds (or as some say it is water pressure?, but I had constant squealing at regular intervals). If they put you in the older part of the hotel facing the street, good luck.

Christina L.

Yelp
Our room was way overpriced. No A/C, no thermostat and the room smelled. Bathroom door had a dumb latch on it. Please do not pay $30 a night for valet parking. There is a public parking garage across the street I used for 2 nights and it cost me $24 total. On the bright side, the staff was friendly and the pre-registration and check out registration was super quick and easy.

Amanda R.

Yelp
We loved our stay here so much that we chose to extend our stay! It was our first trip we've ever taken with our dog. The hotel is in walking distance to a beautiful path along the ocean and a park area that we liked spending our mornings in. For the hotel itself, we stayed in the historic side. We absolutely loved all the historic charm of the hotel and all the old Victorian furnishings. Our room had a beautiful wooden wardrobe with intricate carvings (pictured below). Now, one thing about ANY historic building is that there's bound to be some wear and tear, but we thought everything in our room and the hotel in general was well maintained, keeping this in mind. There is also a private hot tub area that's very relaxing after a long day. The front desk was very helpful with all of our questions and quick to respond via email leading up to the trip. The valet service took about 15-30 minutes at the longest for us getting our car during busy hours, but we never felt like we had to wait too long. We would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
DO NOT BOOK HERE. This hotel took my $1,250 advanced booking weeks ago then refused to check me in. They "gave away" my reservation to someone else. I'm at the front desk on a Friday at 630pm and they claim that they have No Manager available until Monday. No One is in charge Fri, Sat, Sun!! They took my $1,250 advanced payment and now I have no place to stay for a week! BLATANT THEFT!

Yelp
The room is absolutely tiny for the price I paid. The dresser drawers are broken in the room, the view is dirty and gross, and the stench is musty and dry. No parking accommodations! No fridge, no microwave. Good luck saving any leftovers or desserts from the incredible restaurants in the area. Update: one of the outlets in the room won't hold a plug so now my gf and I have to share a side of the bed for our phones. Also the bathroom is tiny. Update: very scratchy towels The only thing this place has going for it is it's location but now I see a much more modern looking place just down the street... try Portola Hotel and Spa instead, maybe they're better.

Yelp
Afternoon/Evening staff for check-in was horrible. We were sent up to our 4th floor room with a full cart only to find out that there were 2 flights of stairs and a long hallway to pack our belongings to our room. No A/C We were lied to about the rooms view and bath tub when making reservations. Elevator broke within hours of check-in and we were left with no help. No nearby parking available on a Friday night. Grab and go consisted of coffee, banana and granola bar. We had to wait in line this morning for the line of people making complaints.

Yelp
This was very disappointing very historic hotel very nice when you walk In. But no AC or heat. In the mid summer heat. I had to get 2 fans and open the window as well as place the boxes fan near the window. It was clean but other than that I would never stay here again. I prefer AC or heating. All night because of the windows being open I could hear the squealing of the rats in the streets. I didn't like that at all. And when I say squealing of rats that what I mean. At least I say I tried staying here.

Yelp
Do not stay here. This place gets two stars because 1 the location is great and proximity to a lot of spots and 2 it is clean. However, one of the most important components to a hotel is being able to get a good nights sleep. I was placed in one of the "historic rooms". The walls are so thin you will hear whenever someone above you moves slightly. Similarly the plumbing is INSANELY loud. If any room around you flushes the toilet or runs water the pipes will all loudly go and wake everyone up. Needless to say we were unable to get any sleep here. Also the rooms are small and lack basic amenities; for example, the TV in our room was a small box tv, the pillows are thick and uncomfortable, no mini fridge, and there is no guest parking lot offered by the hotel.

Yelp
I have been staying at this hotel for our mini vacations for a few years now. The reception has always been friendly and helpful. This trip my husband and I noticed it's cleanliness was failing, also what used to be the good morning breakfast is only coffee and a few granola bars. Not sure if we should try for another motel. We love the location and the vintage feel. Hope for a change, for better stays.

Yelp
We stayed at this amazing hotel twice with family for a concert across the street. Everything is close and walking distance. Allison at the front desk was amazing. She was so helpful to get our rooms on the same floor and close to each other. The room is clean. The bed is great. Definitely will stay here again. Thank you Monterey Hotel

Yelp
Not one positive to this hotel experience. The person at the front desk was so rude, not only to us, but to the couple in front of us as we were trying to check in. She sat on the phone talking for at least 15 minutes while we all waited to check in. With the nastiest attitude, she complained that we hadn't checked in remotely. Then admitted they never sent us a link to check in remotely. Her final words were to blame her manager. The elevator was having technical difficulties. The phones don't work. The air conditioner doesn't work. There is no reason anyone should subject themselves to this hotel. Especially with the pandemic going on, you would think they'd want to retain customers....

Yelp
What a great place! We came to Monterey Hotel for 4 days to explore Monterey, Carmel by the Sea, Big Sur and were amazed how perfect this location was! On top of that, it's a 5 minutes walk to the main Fisherman's Wharf pier where we had the best clam chowder! We walked everywhere, no need to drive, since the hotel is located right in a middle of the area with all the restaurants and cafes. Parking was very easy, there always were free spots to leave the car right by the hotel. The hotel itself is such a pleasure to be in: vintage, cozy, romantic. Very pleasing for the eye, since the architecture is 100 years old and was made with dedication. Beds are cozy and the shower gels smell delicious! Friendly staff and easy communication about all our needs. Quiet clean rooms with fresh air. Great place to stay.

Yelp
Had really high hopes coming into this but it wasn't the most pleasant stay. Staff were nice enough and the parking wasn't a big deal. It was also a great location. However, it's is an older hotel. Beat up furniture, no air and it got stuffy. Then it got cold but the fireplace didn't work and the tv was really old so I felt like I was back in the 90's. They were having power issues when we got there and said they called me to warn me but I didn't get a call. The elevator didn't work because of the power issues the first day. Worst of all. It was as if the Harlem globetrotters were staying above us and were playing full games of basketball really early and really late. We had to call the front desk multiple times but not sure they ever followed up on our calls. I was ready to take a trip upstairs and handle the situation myself. If it was cheaper I wouldn't really complain but we paid a good amount to really get less....hope they can figure it out soon.

Yelp
Overall, we enjoyed our stay. We stayed from Saturday afternoon til Monday morning. The hotel was clean and met my expectations as far as decor and such for a hotel from near 1900. The elevator was a plus, as it said that there was none when I booked. And we were on the fourth floor with our dogs so very happy about that. The breakfast provided was less than expected (coffee and some fruit). And the hotel room was noticeably stuffy especially when coming in from outside. Didn't have much interaction with staff so can't comment on that. But we enjoyed our time here.

Yelp
I'm a bit perplexed by the negative reviews. If you want to pay double or triple for a ton of amenities then there's many other hotels in the area. This hotel was priced accordingly and the location is perfect. Parking was a breeze in the lot behind the hotel. Rooms were clean, a few quirks, like pulling the handle up instead of down to enter room. Staff were nice. Overall, great experience. We slept well and feel really comfortable with the price. We'll stay again!

Yelp
First off we were in the Deluxe King room, so not the "historic section". When we checked in we had to wait a bit but only because the person at the front desk was helping someone figure out a snafu with their reservation. I only observed, but it seemed like the hotel employee was going above and beyond to get things worked out for them. When we got up there the guy was really nice. Gave us the rundown on all the rules and got us our room key quickly. We knew before getting here that the parking thing was going to be an issue. The person that checked us in gave us the tip that we could park in any of the 90 minute parking spots for the night because we were checking in after 5pm; as long as we moved our car before 10:30am the next morning. We didn't mind looking for a spot and knew we would be gone by 10am so we took a chance and found parking right around the corner. That trick also happened to work the next night as well, so we didn't have to pay anything for parking. Room was clean but the bed was older and not too comfy, but okay. The hotel is older, and no air in our room so we did sleep with the windows open. I had no idea that downtown Monterey was such a busy place well into the night and early morning. We had loud noises until around 2am and then heard loud street noises all night long. Not the hotel's fault at all. We just weren't expecting it. Second night we asked for a fan, which they brought right up and were able to close the windows a bit more and drowned out some of the noise. The location is great! We walked down to Cannery Row the first night, then on the second night we snagged Y&T tickets at the theater across the street. In the morning you're a quick walk to all kinds of places to eat. Because of parking we actually walked everywhere and discovered all kinds of new places. In the mornings they had coffee and snacks in the lobby that we grabbed on our way out. I know a lot of reviews talked about the staff not being very good, but everyone we interacted with were polite and had no problem helping us. Full disclosure we got a great rate through a 3rd party site and both my husband and I said if we could grab that rate again we would stay there again. After reading the reviews I will just make sure that we are in a deluxe room again as well. For the rate on the website........well, I think we would probably look elsewhere, only because I know you can stay closer to the water for the same price. But for our trip this time it turned out perfect.
