I visited Illumination at the Morton Arboretum this past weekend and honestly walked away pretty disappointed. For $40 a person, I expected something far more immersive and spectacular. At best, this should’ve been a $20 experience and that’s me being generous.
Getting in and out was super easy, which I appreciated, but once you’re actually on the mile-long walking path, the excitement drops off fast. You’d think along such a long trail there would be extravagant displays, synchronized lights, or at least some sections that really “wow” you. Instead, there were long stretches of nothing but darkness, broken up by the occasional small, messy-looking illumination that didn’t feel worth stopping for.
The “ornament ball” area was especially disappointing, it was literally just blinding white lights, not festive or magical at all. It felt like they phoned in some of the biggest spots that should have been showstoppers.
If you’re deciding between holiday light displays, I highly recommend choosing the Botanic Gardens Christmas lights instead. They put on a far more impressive, detailed, and immersive experience that actually feels worth the money.
Morton Arboretum’s Illumination wasn’t terrible… it just wasn’t worth anywhere near $40 per person. Save your cash and go somewhere that delivers.
