The Best British Pubs to Get Drunk on History

"The Mug House is a traditional public house located in the English village of Claines that dates back to the 15th century. Traditional in most senses, at least. The exact location of the pub is near the junction where Claines Lane meets Cornmeadow Lane, just to the rear of Claines church. The position of the pub is such that one has to walk through, or very near, the graveyard of the church in order to access it. It is one of only two pubs in England to be situated on consecrated ground. Macabre location aside, the centuries-old Mug House consists of four main public spaces inside on the ground floor. There is a back room, bar, hatch and a snug. The back room is most commonly used by diners at lunch time and from this room there is a view of the Malvern Hills. The hatch tends to be frequented when the other rooms are fully occupied. The ceilings inside the Mug House are quite low and as the building is timber framed many of the walls are not straight, as the building has settled over the years." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Food was reasonable in this fine vintage pub next to St Joseph's church in Claines, Worcs

What a great pub and garden that sits against a backdrop of the Malvern hills. The staff were lovely and a proper old school place to sit and enjoy life. Didn't eat here so can only give 4 stars but hope to return soon. Dog friendly and good walks nearby.

Love this place and people. A.well pulled pint and not too pricey. Can get busy in the summer which shows how popular it is. Some bits are a bit ramshackle the outside mens toilet for example but that adds the charm. Great to see in in the day with the church in full swing. Also in spring and the tree blossom is glorious.

A beautiful hidden gem. Limited food only serve till 2 pm. However the setting is stunning lovely out door seating areas dogs welcome. No play area for children which I think the back beer garden could benefit from. Please give it a try amazing summer ales.

Popped in a couple of times in the last few weeks. Had a San Miguel which was well kept and nice and cold. Also a nice crusty roll and salad which was also very nice. Wasn't overly busy on either occasion we came which suited us. Hoping to pass by more often.

This is a truly quirky place set in a church yard, very traditional no local ale on tap but what was on offer was well kept and served with a smile. Food was standard fayre which was perfect for this type of country pub. Worth a visit but be warned it is small so good weather visit is preferable to get a seat!

Visited in a Sunday. Busy but staff helpful and no real delay in ordering or receiving our drinks. Great little hidden gem - very historic and interesting!

Yelp
A quaint location (in a churchyard) and a fascinating interior. The beer is good (mostly Marston's offers Oxford Gold, Jennings, Banks's) and so is the food (try the ham, egg and chips). A regular haunt.

Yelp
A welcoming 15th century traditional pub serving well kept real ale. No fruit machines, no sky sports, no juke box but it does have its own ghost. Food served at lunchtimes only. the only pub in england in a churchyard. Children friendly
