My husband and I stayed at the Murray Premises for our 2 night stay in St. John's. I must first of all say that the location is terrific - walking distance to countless restaurants and sights in the city, and the included parking was a real bonus in a city where parking comes at a premium. The staff were absolutely lovely - very friendly and helpful. The bed as well, while very lumpy looking with the bedding on it, was very comfortable and the shower, once we figured it out was very good. Unfortunately, I feel it necessary to say that we thought quality control could have been a tad better. There was only one coffee cup in our room when we arrived (not a big deal as we snagged an extra one from the breakfast room the next morning); the air conditioning did not work. Thankfully, the temperatures in Newfoundland had dropped significantly upon our arrival in St. John's and having the window open sufficed to keep us cool enough. However, we could only open one side of the window as the screen on the other side was torn and flapping and we didn't want to invite bugs into the room. A complaint that is aimed not just at this hotel, but many that we stayed in along the way is that for such a very large king room (which was lovely), there is only one easy chair leaving one of us to sit in the hard chair at the desk. In fairness to the hotel staff when I went downstairs to inquire as to whether another chair could be made available, they did offer to get a somewhat better chair from their conference facility, but I wonder every time we stay in a hotel why it is that with 2 people staying in a room, there aren't comfortable seating options for both. There were 2 bathrobes in the closet, but neither had a belt, although there were belt loops on them. On day 2 I found some of the cleaning staff in the "robe" room and asked for, and received one. The only other complaint that we had was the quality of the toilet paper. From the lowliest of motels and service centre bathrooms, this was hands down the worst, roughest we have encountered. I would have thought that a hotel of this caliber could spring for a better quality of paper for their guests.||The included breakfast, while very basic and simple, was adequate to get our day started, and as I do not wish to end on a negative note, I must say again that the staff were wonderful as was the location. There is a lovely courtyard outside the main doors and although the temperature while we were in St. John's was only 14 degrees, the sun was shining and sitting in the courtyard for half an hour late afternoon was fabulous as it is fully protected from wind and was actually quite hot. I would recommend this hotel, but hope that quality control improves.
