Visiting the Museum of Black Civilisations (Musée des Civilisations noires) in Dakar was a deeply enriching experience for me. From the moment I arrived, the service stood out , welcoming, organized, and helpful. The entrance fee is 3,000 CFA francs, and you immediately get a brief orientation on how to move through the museum. I was especially glad there was an English-speaking staff member, which made navigating and understanding the exhibits much easier.
The museum itself is powerful in both content and design. Opened in 2018, it was conceived as a pan-African space to celebrate, preserve, and tell the story of Black civilizations , from ancient African societies to contemporary expressions across the diaspora. The architecture is striking and symbolic, with a circular structure that feels both modern and rooted in African identity.
Inside, the exhibits are carefully arranged by time period and geographical origin, making the journey through history feel intentional and immersive. I was particularly moved by the exhibition dedicated to African women , it was deep, emotional, and beautifully curated.
Overall, it’s educational, thought-provoking, and visually impressive. A must-visit for anyone coming to Dakar who wants to understand Africa beyond the surface.
