The 21 Best Things to Do in Helsinki (Updated 2025)

"As a history buff I appreciated this well-funded museum that presents a large collection of Finnish artifacts from the Stone Age to the present — jewelry, coins, tools, weapons — and offers comprehensive cultural history of Finland and the Finno-Ugric people alongside rotating pop-up exhibits, workshops and tours; it’s a great place to get an overview of Finland’s history." - Matthew Kepnes

I visited the place in 2023 and it was a very good experience. There were lots of things to see and read/ learn. I would recommend it to everyone. The price is reasonable!

This is a very unique museum. It usually takes around 4 hours if you are an art & history enthusiast, other than that 3 hours is probably enough. All the descriptions are available in English and have timeline included. The system is very interactive and you won't get bored. It offers free entry on every Friday fom 4pm-6pm. It's a must visit place in Helsinki.

Google
Truly an amazing museum if you like history and relics from Finland. You have to step away your bags and coats in lockers provided which are free. You can pick up the tokens near the lockers. The staff are so friendly and their memories are top notch. The displays are great. Most museums have lots of activities especially for children but adults can have fun too.

The collection is rich, varied and there is so much to learn and discover…We spent over three hours in the museum and did not even stop to read everything, and neither used the audio guides. It is my first time in Finland and I have no knowledge of its history and culture. The items and the rooms’ introduction panels gave me many insights without being boring lecture. Looking forward to its re-opening in 2027!

I was lucky enough to visit the museum before its renovation project began. I can say this place is awesome; there are lots of fascinating collections and interesting things to learn about. Staff was helpful and friendly. Plus, student discount, even when coming from abroad. I am definitely looking forward to visiting again in the near future after expansion is completed.

The museum is really nice! With Helsinki card, I didn’t pay for the entrance, it’s included in the card price. The museum staff were really nice and helpful. I lost my Helsinki card while picking up the guide gadget, the staff member found it and returned to me 😇 The museum start with the history of people who lived in Stone Age up to the current days. There was also an exhibition dedicated to Sami people: their lifestyle, clothing. I loved that all. The coffee in the museum cafe was not great, unfortunately 🙃

I am not a huge museum fan but i think it is an interesting museum. Many things to see, small text in three languages, and kind of interactive. I spent almost one and a half hours and saw everything pretty quickly without elaborately reading every caption. I visited it on Friday midday and it was very quiet.

Visit soon! The museum is to be closed for at least two years due to renovation. The museum houses several permanent exhibitions, including the history of Finland & the pre-historic time on this land. Currently there is also an interesting but temporal exhibition on outsider art, which I highly recommend! The building itself is a classical, elegant architecture, which worths appreciation.

Yelp
This is our family favorite, absolutely fantastic museum! Great changing exhibitions and a wonderful collection of the Finnish history. Full of information and great experience also for kids. Many fantastic features, such as time trip to Finnish heavy metal music and predicting the future president.

Yelp
This museum offers so much more than its size would suggest. There are lots of sections to wander through to discover the history of Finland from prehistoric times to now. Take your time to wander through and take it all in. From the history of the sauna to modern heavy metal, you'll find so much to see and do!

Yelp
Okay museum to check out if you're visiting Helsinki housed inside an old church that tells the story of the history of Finland from the Stone Age to the 19th century. I did feel that the layout was a tad confusing and for €10, it's a fairly small museum. If you purchase the Helsinki Pass I would do it if it's raining but other than that, it wasn't the most interesting museum I ever been to. Plus it was super packed so it made getting around a bit of a challenge.

Yelp
This is a must-visit! The prehistory portion (Stone-Bronze-Iron-Viking) is modern and well done with multimedia content that provides context and enhances the artifacts; audio-visual, pieces available to touch, modern rendering of how items were worn or created. Superbly done. The medieval through 19th century art and artifacts are an impressive collection. It's mostly baroque paintings, medieval through 19th century furniture, and an entire room devoted to Christian based art pieces from medieval churches. The virtual reality feature in the throne room was fun! Signs are in Swedish, Finnish and English. I really took my time and also visited the temporary Barbie exhibit (remaining until Aug 28 2018), and I was in the museum for about 3 hours but I read nearly every thing possible. Could definitely be enjoyed in less time if you don't have that much time.
