"The New 400 Theaters, Rogers Park Edgewater. Sometimes the best way to see a movie on the big screen isn't to see it in a theatre with 200 Lay-Z-Boy seats, a 40 foot tall screen, a sound system ready to deafen. Sometimes a small room with a couple dozen chairs, a projector, and a box of popcorn is all you need. The new 400 cinemas is a great way to get away for a movie without all the distractions or the cost that comes with them."

Google
Great movie theater friendly staff! And also This is nice place next the cinema to have Thi Ice cream 🍦🍨 delicious 😋

Jenn Sutherland

Google
This is a true neighborhood gem, with the kindest owners and staff. We always feel welcomed, ticket prices and popcorn are reasonably priced, and each theater is an intimate experience, laughing and watching with maybe up to 50 other people. We love that we can walk to this beauty.

D Adams

Google
A quaint, old theater. Sound was still great. Seats could use a refresh (if you're sensitive about that in your watching experience) It still provides a great, small community feel to your movie night. And the snacks are cheaper than the big name places! It's a great place to watch a movie and support local historical business without feeling like you're sacrificing quality for supporting your community

Claire Coyle

Google
The staff is great and drink prices are acceptable. Only complaints are that the popcorn was burnt (probably just an occasional issue) and the seats are quite uncomfortable (my behind and friend's behinds hurt or fell asleep repeatedly). They need new seats pretty badly.

Google
I love this theater (cinema) because is more cheap than greatest. But not only "cheap" is the reason, also popcorns are delicious, the space in rooms is enough and intimate. There is discounts for students!

Layla

Google
I have lived in Rogers Park for 15yrs & just love this neighborhood! The 400 is one of the many reasons why. It's located within walking distance of my home. The theater is very comfortable, the popcorn always fresh & all for a decent price. I cannot imagine Rogers Park without The 400! Thisplaceneighborhood gen

Google
Cute old theater with potential; however, don't eat the popcorn. It tasted like old, bad oil, and I only ate a handful and felt sick most of the evening. The sound is great!

Emily Brink

Google
Go support this local theatre! Very affordable. So many options to drink and eat. When I said to the staff, "please give me a ridiculous amount of butter on my popcorn," she heaped it on until it was dripping out the bottom - I was utterly thrilled. We saw the DnD movie and we had a lovely time. Wear layers, it does get pretty chilly in the theatre!

Yelp
I highly recommend this theater! The prices are very affordable.. ranging between $5-8 which is excellent given inflation, post-COVID pricing changes, and overall comparing to big block theater companies such as AMC or Regal. I got the opportunity to see 'Bodies Bodes Bodies' at this theater yesterday, and other than my seat for my butt not being the most comfortable, I literally could not find anything else to complain about. It's a very intimate theater that not only serves alcohol, snacks, food, etc at all cheaper prices as well, but this theatre is one of the oldest and longest running theaters in Chicago! I would've never guessed I'd go up to Edgewater to find this experience, but low and behold! I'd imagine this place is really popular among the Loyola students who live in the area. There's plenty of options to get here via transit such as the Red/Purple Line (Loyola Station) and bus routes 147/155. Also, there's a DIvvy rack just around the corner as well, so endless options! I'll be back!

Yelp
Really enjoyed my experience here! Will surely return. The New 400 is a nice, quaint, local theatre with a lovely homey vibe and good prices. Tickets are around $8.50 or so, but there are discounts for kids, elders, students, etc. They have deal nights too! $6 movies on Wednesdays, and occasionally $6 movies on Tuesdays for students. A large popcorn is only $4. What a deal! They have a full bar and your regular concessions at the front, and several theaters at the back. The New 400 is definitely on the smaller side; would not compare in size to any Regal or AMC or anything. Solid visibility in the theater even from the back. They get pretty good releases, but don't show all that many per week. That being said, the calendar on their site is updated with when everything will release. Overall I really liked this place. One of my favorite movie theaters in Chicago so far. Looking forward to seeing more flicks here!

Yelp
This is a nice quaint theater. Staff are super friendly. The popcorn is fresh but they don't use real butter. The prices are super reasonable. Probably half the price in the big chains. Large popcorn was only $6. The seats are the old theater seats not the fancy recliners. But who cares. The sound is good. It was a little cool in the theater though. We had to keep our coats on . On a Sunday, I found free parking on Sheridan Road unbelievable.

Yelp
I have always loved this theater since I was a kid. My older sister used to bring me up here when she first moved to Rogers Park. This small and quaint theater is perfect. They only have four rooms for showing but somehow they make it work. The tickets are cheap and they have some type of deal every day of the week, which is awesome for Loyola students and those of the neighborhood. They also sell liquor here and it is super cheap but good quality. They have a calendar that notifies people of the movie releases etc. The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly and respectable. For the month of October they are attempting to start a tradition of showing all Halloween movies (old and new).

Yelp
Manager is a total dick. Yelp coupons when checking in gets you a drink. Manager refused the coupon with a a real snotty attitude. Saying "We've never taken them", I'm explained I used them before and he denied it. Real freaking prick this guy

Yelp
I haven't been in a theater this dilapidated since seeing Friday after next back in 2002'. A grungy theater with a similar 'torn up' look. Same grime, torn carpets held in place with duct tape, exposed ceiling due to missing covers, janky seating w/ something poking you in the butt/back and more.. If I return for a show, I'm bringing a blow-up donut for my booty or a foam pad. I feel like I had a gait abnormality after watching Shazam the other day. The highlights of the 400 is that it offers booze (with nightly specials) and happy /cheerful employees. It's hard to find such relics these days since many of the older theaters are gutted & rehabbed or simply torn down. Priced at $8.50 a ticket and the fact that booze is available, it's not terrible. But, neither is watching Crackle* on the couch with a pizza. This theater could use a good rehab, that's for sure. Though even an injection of $5 grand would do them some good.. (* Crackle or Sony Crackle is a free-ish streaming service available online.) It comes down to the spend and event. How much are you willing to spend for a night at the movie theater. What perks should come with that ticket price. What kind of sound and visual experience are you looking for when seeing a new movie? For me: If the movie has been out many weeks and I just want to see it on a large screen, sure. IF they're hosting a series of old flicks; ie Halloween movies, comedy classics or Christmas movies, sure. **Now that I think about it, I once attended a church service here a couple years ago. They must have a couple theaters with better surrounds (carpet, seating, smell), because I don't remember that room being as bad as the one we were in the other day.**

Yelp
I consider myself extremely lucky to live only a few blocks from this place for the past 10 years. Having a bad day? Go see a movie here. The staff are pretty much always awesome, the prices are good, they make the popcorn perfectly, and the theaters are clean. You're not going to get some fancy-schmancy reclining seats here because this theater was built in 1912 or around there, but it's comfortable enough for a movie. And you can get booze if you want. To add: during the beginning of Covid, they obvs had to close down but they hosted a rapid-testing site where you'd show up, a health-practitioner would come out of the building and swab your nose, and within like, five minutes you'd get a text letting you know of the results. So, in conclusion of my TED Talk, basically , the folks who own and run this place rock, and have the drive to keep this place rockin'.
google avatar

Yelp
I am so glad this theater exists in this neighborhood. Not having to travel outside the community to enjoy a movie is great. It will definitely be my go to place when I visit family in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Box office successes at indie prices. Couple it with snack and happy hour specials and you'll have a great date night or family outing. Ask about their affordable rental prices for private viewings and parties. Love this theater!

Yelp
I come here all the time and love it!! The staff is friendly and helpful. The main draw is the price. Compared to big name theaters these prices are amazing! They get most big movies and they are smack dab in the middle of Rogers Park. The facilities could be updated, but I have never had a poor experience here! I consider this MY movie theater, and have nothing but love for the staff and business as a whole.

Yelp
Took our son to his first movie last weekend to see the new super Mario bros movie. Theater was smaller than chain ones but I see that as a pro. The check in for our pre purchased tickets and the snacks was quick. We enjoyed the movie and the experience. Can't believe we haven't been here before this but we'll be back!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
I came here to see the Super Mario Bros Movie and loved everything about the theater. The popcorn and drinks we got were delicious (they even had themed cocktails to match the movie), and service was very quick and accommodating. The seats were more comfortable than I was expecting too, and even though the theaters themselves were smaller in size than your typical AMC or something, I had a great time and was very impressed by the screen size and cleanliness.

Yelp
I love this place but covid reason. Just need them to wash hands more. Food safety inspector would have a field day. I need this place to stay open for 40 years
google avatar

Yelp
First off, I'm surprised that with so many positive reviews this yelp listing is unclaimed. This is a restored theater showing first run films at decent prices. Nothing too fancy; down to earth place; overall a neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Yelp
COVID UPDATE: This is a COVID testing center during lockdown. Will do insurance and no insurance (free) testing. Absolutely love this business helping the community and can't wait until movies start again to support them. Great business!!!

Anthony P.

Yelp
Fantastic, historical theater with great upkeep and a hospitable staff. Worth your time and a bang for your buck!

Yelp
Love this place, so glad I moved to the neighborhood a few years back. Lowkey, local, and homey feeling, which is such a nice change from the fancy, over-the-top chain theaters I used to go to. This is the place I go whenever I can. :)

Yelp
Since I enjoy watching movies and read so many great reviews about this theater, I thought I'd check it out. I thought it was ok - nothing specular. I think it is more of a great neighborhood theater. I took the trek up to Rogers Park from Lakeview. I decided to take the red line which is convenient. You can get off at the Loyola stop and walk three blocks which is no big deal. You can also take the 151 Sheridan bus and there is a stop in front of the theater so there is plenty of transportation choices. The theater is very easy to spot. There is an outdoor patio in front of this complex that had a Starbucks, bank, Thai restaurant, and the theater. During the warmer months, I'm sure it's quite charming and busy. When you enter the theater, the ticket desk is right there. The ticket prices are great!! About 3-4 ft from there is the bar and snack counter. I can imagine the line can get backed up. The restrooms are a few feet away. The men's restroom is small. Be prepare to stand in line. As stated, there are four individual theaters. The theaters are in a stadium style seating. The chairs, I thought, were ok - nothing like AMC 21 or at Regal City North. Be prepared to put your soda against the seat in front of you or on the floor. There is great leg room between each row. The sound and screen were ok. Will I return? Currently, I really can't answer that.
google avatar

Disco ..

Yelp
Convenient. Clean. But every time I see a movie there the volume is too low (Yes i know, opposite of usual "too loud in most movie theaters). Saw Knives Out, a dialogue driven movie but couldn't hear all of the cast...a customer couple seats away from me brought in a giant plastic bag of whatever to eat -typical, no big deal, this is not about customer....but because the volume was so low it couldn't muffle out her typical common movie theater food noise. Turn it up!!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Looking for a cheap date? You found your spot. This independently ran movie theater sits in the heart of Rogers Park and is within walking distance from the Loyola Campus. For the price of a movie ticket at an AMC, you can get your ticket, a drink (like a drink drink) and some snacks. The staff is fun and energetic. You can tell they love their job. As for the theater, it's what you would expect. Nothing fancy and pretty standard as far as movie theaters are concerned. You have seats, sound and that random sticky spot. If you feel like talking during the movie or whipping out your phone, DON'T. The staff won't hesitate to kick you out. I've seen it. For someone who easily gets annoyed during a movie, it's a Godsend. That, alone, keeps me coming back. Anyway, if you're in the area, check it out and support your local businesses!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Good cheap theater. Very nice to have a movie theater around the corner from home. Theater - imagine just the front 9 rows of a regular theater (the not sloped kind) that's all you get. My screen had a stain on the side. Video and sound quality is good. Selection - depends but you only get 4 choices and sometimes that means nothing worth seeing. Food - haven't tried. Was able to bring water bottle with. Love the theater, location and price just wish the selection was better at times but overall good local place.

Yelp
If you're a well-behaved adult, you can buy booze & snacks and watch a first-run movie on the big screen. Hey, I knew I'd have you at hello! It's a neighborhood cinema, so don't expect coliseum seats and valet parking. But neither will you trip over duct-taped torn carpets and perverts. It's my happy-medium theater. Prices are more than reasonable, the staff is on the ball, and there are good nearby eateries. Loyola Park and Lake Michigan are a half-block away, for those romantic dates.
google avatar

Irysh M.

Yelp
It's a Divy movie theater that's cool as hail... A Chicago staple no frills...old seats...old floors...great staff...don't change a thing...
google avatar

Nia H.

Yelp
Visited this theater with a friend to watch the new Candyman film. It's such a cute little theater with extremely friendly staff and a great vibe. Small theaters really allow for an intimate movie viewing experience. They have lots of snacks & a bar! 10/10 would recommend
google avatar

Sonjachardé M.

Yelp
This is the best value on the north side for a movie. They recently remodeled (it was needed) so the prices went up to $6 for kids and $8.50 for adults for a regular show, $5 on Tuesdays. I went on a Sunday at 4 pm and was charged $12 for two people so I think the matinee fee is $6 per person. Despite the price increase, they're still cheaper than any other theater. Parking can be kind of tough because a lot of the side streets are permit parking zoned but if you don't mind walking a few blocks it'll be fine. The theaters and bathrooms are pretty clean plus you can buy beer - which is always necessary.
google avatar

Adelaide O.

Yelp
UPDATING my original review: The 400 has been providing support and supplies, serving as a pickup/dropoff outpost for demonstrators against police brutality during a horrible time in the history of our city and country, while remaining closed for screenings to prevent the spread of the global outbreak. If that doesn't warrant five stars nothing does. No big chain has deep community ties like this, or deserves your business more, no matter what shallow creature comforts they might overcharge for.
google avatar

Greg G.

Yelp
I saw a 9 pm showing last night and the woman at the desk was kind enough to tell me that large drinks and popcorns come with a free refill. I knew this (as I always get it for that reason), but appreciated her letting me know that I could get it after the movie. After the movie, everyone who worked there was cleaning and I didn't want to bug them about refills when they were trying to close. My friend and I decided we would come back the next day with our tickets and empty containers for the refill. My friend went and was refused even after explaining the situation. I used to love the 400, but this pisses me off. Why would you pay $10 for a pop and popcorn that have no refills? We wouldn't have bought it if we knew we couldn't. Won't be buying concessions again and am spreading the word.
google avatar

Yelp
New manager with dark hair and glasses is a complete Jerk. I'm a neighbor and live alone. Come here pretty regularly. Last week I came in and he said they don't have a drink special. This week of course different person. They do!! I mentioned this and he completely dissed me. He is so rude. Get rid of him. Not into customer service. After seven years they have gone through changes. Bring back people who are good with customer service. He should not be here. Takes the fun out of a fun day. Or do not come here in Monday's.
google avatar

Yaeko M.

Yelp
I knew it was there but never have been there but I was grateful that I finally went. Yeay, this is a good deal movie theater! The ticket is $5-$6 for one. There are typically 4 movies to show. Also! Bar. you can have drinks. Theater quality: more than enough Ambiance: good Price: Awesome
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
A small neighborhood theater where we love to see the latest movies. It's not the cleanest but the staff is always friendly, the popcorn fresher than most places, and it has a small bar for the adults.... They show a good balance of movies so families can see the latest family friendly movie while the adults can watch the latest thrillers... They also have special viewings throughout the year.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
3 years later, I STILL love the New 400 Theaters. I went to see the Jungle Book this weekend with my husband and my friend, and tickets were $6 for 3D. That is amazing, like, less than half of what other theaters charge. I love supporting this local business. Yes, it sometimes gets gross during busy opening weekends, and yes, sometimes dumb people are loud during the movie, but that's pretty standard. The snacks and drinks are priced way lower than other theaters too. If you're looking for an inexpensive, solid movie-going experience, come here. If you're looking to complain about everything little thing (and not even willing to voice those concerns to management), go somewhere else.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
The word cheap has both positive and negative connotations. The New 400 Theaters demonstrate this. While the price of a movie ticket to see a new release was staggeringly reasonable at $7.50, they ran out of both hot dogs and popcorn. My friend hadn't eaten dinner and was relegated to nachos as his lone dish. You pay for what you get here. It's nothing particularly bad, but it's not swank either. All the refreshments are also really reasonably priced, including the booze, which helps mitigate this fact. For those of you who just want that big screen, the New 400 will definitely give that to you for half the price of an AMC. And you can drink to your heart's content. One other bonus - checking in here on Yelp gives you a free drink (alcoholic or non, your choice).
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Well my, my, my--look at the Village North all grown up. I saw many movies at the old incarnation, which served us well from college and a few years onward. It certainly was a crappy theater, but what did you expect for such low prices? The only time that I was really annoyed with them was when I tried to see The Fellowship of the Ring on Christmas Day in 2001, and the employees didn't show up for work in time to open the theater. I wasn't terribly upset when it closed, as by then I hadn't been there for a few years. I had moved further away and had made the Evanston theater my regular cinema. But it's great to have the new version back in the neighborhood. And the place beats expectations. We are talking friendly and efficient staff, satisfactory facilities, and of course cheap prices. $5 for matinees, $7.50 for regular. I never get movie concessions, but you can actually afford them here: $3 small popcorn, $3 small soda...but why not get the "Share Pack"--ten bucks for two medium drinks and a large popcorn. They spiffed up the seats and the floors are no longer a nightmare. The A/V equipment isn't state-of-the-art, but better than what they used to have. All the New 400 really needs to do is keep the place relatively clean and maintain those ticket prices, and they will have greatly exceeded their predecessors.
google avatar

Judith M.

Yelp
Love this place. Friendly staff. Did I mention the Yelp app free drink promo they've been running for 6 months? AND free refills on large popcorn? No, they don't have the stadium seating and the carpets are a tad worn, but this is fun for the whole family at bargin basement prices.
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
I love this theater! It's super affordable, the staff are awesome, and the snacks are reasonably priced. You can watch a movie and get snacks for less than the cost of a movie at a mainstream theater. I also thought the quality of the movie was great and the seats were comfortable. This isn't a high end movie theater, but they do play great movies, and you will have a great time!

Adelyn K.

Yelp
I've been coming to this theater ever since I've moved rogers parks and I love it. Price are reasonable, Staff is incredible they're nice and quick to attend you. I come here almost every weekend with my boyfriend and we love it.
google avatar

Marie Q.

Yelp
I love a small neighborhood movie theatre. It has been some time since I was able to enjoy such an experience. Great movie staple snacks, fresh popcorn, a nice supply of alcoholic options and always a nice movie selection. Clean theatres, concessions and bathrooms. Comfy seats and always a friendly group of employees.
google avatar

Mykel L.

Yelp
This place is awesome and stocked with a full bar. With covid I think they may have been struggling but they opened a patio lounge with drinks which is awesome. They have posters for sale too, but it is hard to tell which ones they are, because they are rolled up. I hope they can make it until after covid because the owner is pretty cool.

Rebecca J.

Yelp
The staff was extremely friendly, and the buttered popcorn was amazing and very reasonably priced. It's so nice to see that this theater is still going......
google avatar

Abby T.

Yelp
Great bang for your buck. Tuesday's are $5 tickets and Wednesday's have a $4 student discount. Not the most glamorous of theaters, but for the prices, it's very well worth it. The seating is still stadium style but not as drastic in height as a typical theater. Definitely will come back for the discount Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
google avatar

Rogers Park B.

Yelp
If you live in or around Rogers Park how can you not go to The New 400 Theaters? Better ticket pricing then the theatres in Evanston or AMC ( $7.50 for a night showing or $5.00 for a matinee), full bar, cheap parking and first-run showings, what more can you want? A con is that the theatres are small and do not have theatre seating, so if you are a movie snob you may want to spend the $11.00 for AMC.
google avatar

Alison Y.

Yelp
This is a great little local theater that's a great option for those who are looking to see the latest movies but not wanting to pay a premium. The theater seems to only show 4 or so movies at a time and the auditoriums are quite small compared to your typical AMC or Regal, but the price is $8.50, or $7.50 with a student ID. As long as you don't come expecting a super cushy theater, you'll have a nice and cozy experience. With a Yelp Check-In, you even get a free drink - and that includes alcoholic beverages!
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
I often come to the New 400 Theatres because it is by far the most affordable theatre in the Chicago area. On Tuesdays, movies are even cheaper! Military members always get in free and they have all of the latest films. It is a smaller theatre so there are usually only three or four showing, but I've yet to have trouble seeing a movie that I came to see. They offer a snack bar with alcoholic drinks as well as the usual theatre go-tos, like popcorn and candy. Every day they have a featured drink special as well (2-1 wine for example!). The downside is that there is only one small restroom which can get packed! The movie screens are also a tad smaller than normal and are set at a high angle to allow for everyone in the room to see.

Eyes on the F.

Yelp
I enjoyed this theater and I'm glad they reopened,Although I have to give a 3 star because of the food. The drinks have no flavor and are absolutely disgusting, the popcorn is very dry they rarely add butter.I would not recommend this theater unless your looking for a cheap movie theater
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Cheap neighborhood gem. Nothing fancy here- small screens and pretty rundown, but super cheap. Good selection of movies. They are also always running some special for families or daily ticket specials.

Meredith H.

Yelp
The New 400 Theater is a neighborhood treasure, showing first-run movies for 45+ years. I am so grateful, and the community is so fortunate, that it remains open. Tickets are AFFORDABLE. Food is affordable and totally FINE. The staff is welcoming and warm. I make a point of seeing movies at this theater to support it, and I encourage moviegoers to do the same. Yes, get there early to find parking.
google avatar

Cameron S.

Yelp
The New 400 Cinema in Roger's Park is a delightfully cheap experience. The theater reminds me of the rag tag theaters I'd attend as a kid when I lived in small midwest towns. The tickets are $4-$8. The theaters look like large basements. The only movies it shows are sure bets. You won't find any indie or foreign films here. Despite the absence of luxury, I've found every visit to the The New 400 to be charming. The theater's usually fill up, ensuring you're seeing a movie with a responsive and engaged audience (and that's the best reason to go to the movies, isn't it?)
google avatar

Safana A.

Yelp
This is my favorite movie theater.. they have the best popcorn and their price is very reasonable.. will always come back for sure:)
google avatar

Bosie L.

Yelp
I love coming here because of the price, but sometimes you get what you pay for. The place is clean, friendly, up to date with movies and has a bar. Sometimes people talk too much or play on the cell.
