The New Deal gets me: offering good food AND good coffee all in one place, at a reasonable price. Gone are the days of going through the drive through and then to brunch, just head to New Deal where you can get it all! The scrambles are exactly what I'm looking for (hearty, with fresh veggies and that delicious chicken apple sausage) and their rotating specials keep things interesting. It's a small detail but I love that they don't skimp on the toast and offer two full slices, and leave the butter and jam on the table. This is also where you'll find some of the most flavorful hot sauces (don't miss the smoked mango habanero), and of course, ketchup. What else could you want? Well, besides table service, but it's a luxury I'm willing to part with. Overall, a new favorite! Go ahead and get yourself a punch card, you'll be needing it!

Certainly the worst breakfast I have ever eaten in the city of Portland, maybe the worst breakfast I have ever eaten in my life. We have eaten here many times over the years. I would never have called it a must eat, but it at least passed the test on the basics. Not the case any longer. Bacon snapped in half and was somehow room temperature, biscuit made me wish I had been given a Pillsbury biscuit cause that would have been closer to a biscuit than what I was served, and the “chicken apple sausage” was like flavored sand poured into a sausage casing. Only saving grace was the dirty chai, it was a revelation worth having again. And my kids did enjoy their French Toast. Dear Owners, it’s time to replace your cooks with a team that knows how to cook breakfast. After years of being a patron, I will not be back. Though I will take home my leftovers, maybe the dogs will eat them.

Google
Placed a to go order and they didn't include any sauce for a meal that contained 3 different sauces. We called them three times to no answer and eventually left a voicemail to try and rectify the situation. They never called back. Food was incredibly bland without the promised toppings. An expensive way to ruin what could have been a nice weekend brunch.

Google
Came to new deal cafe because it was walking distance of where i was getting my windshield replaced. Staff was so friendly and restaurant had a relaxing ambiance inside and out. I ordered the french toast and a side of bacon and had a iced latte and chose from a good selection of syrups and ended up on banana and caramel and it was amazing! The staff really made the experience so great and has been a great start to the morning

Google
All in all I enjoyed my breakfast, just got off the plane from Southern California needed to find some breakfast quickly came down here to The New Deal Cafe, I ordered the farmhouse scramble which I did enjoy. Although the bacon was a little overcooked too crispy for my taste, the home fries were delicious. Their mushroom country gravy was like crack cocaine. I couldn't stop putting it on my food and the house biscuits were pretty sad. The Strumptown Brand coffee was also very good. I enjoyed it. The location kind of looked like a dive from the outside but it was very well seated on the inside, The atmosphere was nice with some grateful Dead on the radio and the service staff was very friendly, there is only residential parking so be ready for that. Please put pork sausage on the menu.

Google
Very neat and fun brunch spot. The scrambles all look so good and the Mediterranean Scramble was delicious. Also tried the Bacon Latte, which was a tasty and interesting drink - almost like a buttery latte, sweeter than a usual latte but also savory flavor.

Google
YUM!! such delicious food for a great price!!! blueberry pancakes were piping hot when they hit the table with a pot of fresh fruit clearly homemade the turkey and mango sandwhich was surprisingly good which, an unexpected combo. the atmosphere was amazing with so many people making the place feel comfy and cozy.

Google
Great food for breakfast! Order at the counter, where there is a big menu. I got a scramble of the day, which had onions, peppers, mushrooms, (veggie) sausage, and sundried tomato pesto. I got a side of potatoes and a biscuit, which were very well done. My accomplice got biscuits and gravy and complained of soggy biscuits from the overly wet gravy. Also unfortunately, the cooks messed up my order the first time by putting in the default sausage instead of veggie sausage (I'm vegetarian). Overall, very good experience and also local hot sauce at every table!

Yelp
Really good ,I live really close so it is a great little local restaurant.I do not personally like the breakfast burritos, but the pancakes and sausage is super good ,if you have baby there is a little kid area ,of the restaurant so overall pretty good ,I would recommend it.

Yelp
Very good service, extremely fast and reasonably priced, coffee was great too, and tons of condiments, the jam is great. I definitely would suggest this for anyone looking for a new spot to eat breakfast. I had the special scramble and it was awesome

Cheryl D.

Yelp
I find it very sad as a neighborhood cafe, that the owner would not reach out or respond to my post. There is no service to acknowledge. I wanted to give this business the benefit of the doubt, to come different days and times. I don't understand why I was treated so poorly, several times by the front of staff. I just went through the reviews and the negative reviews were exactly like my experience. Sad

Yelp
food deal- realxed and attentive staff; definitely recommend for a lazy saturday or thursday

Yelp
Great place for breakfast and lunch. Hubby had tuna melt and I requested potatoes with cheese. Both were very enjoyable. Will definitely be heading back there again. Service was courteous as well.

Yelp
This place is great- super cute! They have the best bacon in Portland!! The service is good and fast.

Yelp
I was really hoping to like this cute local cafe better. It's got a great vibe, are comfortable to hang in and are friendly and I especially like their commitment to social values. But I wasn't thrilled with my breve latte and I ordered the Farm Scramble with Black Forest Ham BUT without mushrooms (as I just detest this flavor with eggs, but love it elsewhere) and lo and behold my order came with mushrooms! Yuk! The eggs were cooked perfectly and they did ask if I wanted a fresh plate, but I don't like to waste, so I picked out the mushrooms and actually liked the rest. The home fries were PERFECT and I cheated and had some homemade strawberry jam with my biscuit, which was delicious. Daughter had a bacon grilles cheese and really enjoyed hers. All in all NDPDX was good, not great, but we do support local, so keep up the vibe.

Yelp
Went here for breakfast with a relative. The service was fine, nothing to write home about. The food was average, water was available for free. The prices are average. The restaurant was clean. I would go back again.

Yelp
Absolutely ideal spot on NE Halsey for breakfast, lunch, coffee, or tea. There are plenty of items to choose from their menu, and the many we've tried are both ample and delicious. Very friendly, cordial service. Booths and tables inside as well as out on the street. New Deal Cafe is a perfect spot for a meeting over cups of coffee or tea, or just sitting by yourself while working on a laptop. No loud music or TVs. Very clean and safe. All the staff continue to wear masks. Open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered the same thing, special scramble as a burrito, I however did not get my burrito at all, instead just a small pile of eggs a and some potatoes... really looks and feels like less for than my husband got in his burrito.... I'm sick and tired of restaurants failing to do their one job: make food to order. Wasn't able to come back and complain, because all the doors were locked by the time I got back. I guess I can't trust anyone to make my food.... Really sucks.
google avatar

Krystal H.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood petsitting and the owner told me this place had good breakfast burritos, so I popped over and grabbed one. Big fan! Would love to be able to add avocado but otherwise, all good. Heading back in a few days to try the biscuit and mushroom gravy.
google avatar

Feral D.

Yelp
Good coffee, friendly counter help, and (scary) fast service... which is kind of the problem. Your food arrives lightning fast and as a result isn't hot or taste as if it's been cooked to order. How could it be? Now I know home fries are made in advance and kept warm until needed, but would it kill them to slap some on the flat top a minute before serving just to add a bit more life to those spuds?

Yelp
Great food. Love their bacon and breakfast is great. Eaten many times over the years. Their BLT sandwich with a side of salad is bomb.

Yelp
If I could describe this place in one word it would be homey. Tucked in the corner of a pretty residential area. Definitely a neighborhood place. Lots of street parking available. Mainly picked it because it has both indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of benches and tables in the back area. Staff was friendly and helpful and didn't try to rush my very indecisive group. I ended up getting an egg scramble with chicken sausage and a latte. Food: portions are large. Very easy to split an egg scramble with someone else and be full. Perfectly cooked egg, no dried bits or puddles here. I normally don't like mushroom in things but honestly not sure I even noticed them since the flavors were balanced. Got the savory from the egg and sausage and the sweet from onion and bell pepper. Latte: solid latte. Interesting that they put it in a glass cup with one of the cardboard sleeves but nothing against it. Didn't detract from the experience or taste at all. Definitely plan on coming back if I'm ever in the area again. Highly recommend

Yelp
Great clam chowder . Serif. Portlsnd coffee. Amazing back patio. Wonderful food and ambiance.

Yelp
It's not a Republican place! You need your own pronoun to order, maybe. The breakfast was good! I liked the Hair Bender coffee! Blueberry pancakes! Very popular! A line to order!

Tamara N.

Yelp
I've been to New Deal several times now. Their biscuits and gravy are to die for. Not super heavy, and with a mushroom base. Their home fried potatoes are perfectly seasoned with herbs. Stumptown coffee, and great breakfast cocktails. I love this place! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Melous A.

Yelp
I highly recommend. The fruit were so fresh and the French toast was cooked to perfection! Everything was so good would so go back.

A M B.

Yelp
Very noisy environment. Food arrived while we were sitting down! Biscuits and Gravy with scrambled eggs and potatoes. Biscuits were cold, gravy and potatoes lukewarm at best, eggs cooked as ordered and hot. Friendly staff, but won't be back. There are too many other family restaurants that take pride in what and how they serve the meals they prepare for their customers.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood spot! The food is good and consistent. The service is awesome and it is a low key place to hang. My only flag would be they pour too much orange juice in the mimosas. But it is still one of my favorite spots in the city. I'm glad it lasted through the pandemic. Also it is very clean and inviting.

Yelp
New Deal is a friendly neighborhood cafe with ample indoor and outdoor seating. They offer a wide selection of breakfast and lunch menu items, with an assortment of fresh baked goods daily. The wait staff are always friendly, and visitors pretty much always receive consistent service. I visit New Deal when I don't want to stray too far from my own neighborhood, or I'm looking for a convenient place to meet friends for lunch. My only wish is their menu would change more often. I feel like a little more variety would be nice, I'd certainly visit more often if that were the case. My next comment isn't so much a complaint, just an observation. There seem to be an unusual number of strollers parked in front of the cafe mid-morning each day. Indeed, the cafe offers a great little play area for kids. And the restaurant has ample room for large parties to meet up and chat over coffee. But if hanging out with a bunch of toddlers and their parents isn't your thing, shoot for lunch or afternoon coffee instead. I'm glad New Deal has stood the test of time, it is an asset to the neighborhood.

Yelp
We eat here weekly; can't get enough of their farm plate breakfast, great, friendly service, bottomless self-serve coffee, and ambiance (an old corner grocery store.) Lucky to have this working walking distance. 5 stars.
google avatar

Elena P.

Yelp
It's your regular cafe, nothing different from other cafes. My latte was a bit warm and I like my coffee HOT! And my plate took a while and wasn't hot as well.
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Food here is great! I love their breakfast burrito it's great and the corn salad and salsa are flavorful. The sweet and spiced chia was a bit bland, the grapefruit margarita is good. Definitely coming back and trying more items

Yelp
Wonderful cafe using greasy ingredients with a family vibe. Gets busy on the weekends. Staff are great.

Yelp
Any place that serves veggie sausage is a place I like. I came in on a Sunday morning and there was a line of about 3 groups. You place your order at the front then find a table to sit either indoors or out. They had a pretty sweet covered patio space with heaters but the snow storm took it down. It sounds and looks like they are rebuilding it so can't wait for that to be a cozy spot for brunch. We luckily came on a sunny day so ordered at the front and grabbed a seat on the back patio. Our food came out within 20 minutes. We ordered the breakfast sandwich with veggie sausage and salad as well as the scramble with bacon, potatoes and a biscuit. All of the items were super simple but so delicious. I also appreciated the portion size. It was just enough food to fill you up instead of putting you in a food coma. I loved the fresh jam for the biscuit as well as the homemade hot sauces. They have breakfast and lunch items including veggie options so I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Everytime we come here the staff is so friendly and fantastic. Everything on the menu is so tasty. My non mushroom eating son loves the mushroom gravy.

Christine J.

Yelp
Food was delicious and fair priced. Plenty of seating inside with patio outside. The staff was awesome, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. All in all a great experience.

Yelp
I've been frequenting New Deal for a few years and I'm always pleased with the experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food comes out fast and always hot. Their coffee is good (espresso and drip). In pre-COVID times the dining room was a nice spot to read the paper over a relaxed breakfast. Since the pandemic we've only been sitting outside, which is also lovely. They've built two structures on the back patio, which provide nice shelter from the rain or cover from the sun. Favorite menu items include: farm scramble with ham, Mediterranean scramble, giant pancake, veggie delite sandwich (+turkey), and the tuna melt. Their scrambled eggs are the best, the biscuits are fluffy and delicious, and the bacon is stellar.
google avatar

Brenda C.

Yelp
A great neighborhood place. I'm visiting a friend, and we walked over for a quick bite. The steak bites (appetizer) were delicious. We shared a burger, that was also quite yummy. It was a great outside casual dining experience!

Yelp
I want to like this place, I really do. It's close, and has, on occasion, made a decent breakfast. I've eaten here dozens of times, but a successfully prepared simple breakfast has become the exception, not the norm. They seem incapable of cooking a meal to order. I pretty much always get the same thing: eggs over easy, bacon, and toast. Orders come with potatoes. Simple, right? The eggs are usually over so easy that they're still uncooked inside. Toast is really pale. Potatoes are always lackluster and burnt. So I've taken to modifying my order to specify eggs over medium and toast well done. Today, the eggs were still raw/over easy, and it would be generous to call this "toast." It's literally warmed bread, not even the crust was crispy. Of course, the bacon was so overdone that it was more like pork chips than bacon. I'm not sure why they are unable to make something as simple as toast, a task even children can manage, and why they are unable to fry an egg properly, but I'm done. If I need a hit of coffee to go, I'll come by, but no more breakfasts here.

Yelp
Hadn't been here since Covid but our group of 7 friends enjoyed a superb breakfast this morning. Staff was helpful with good suggestions and brought food to our shady outside table within a few minutes of our order! When they didn't have oatmeal, a super bowl was suggested....I'm hooked! Like a cold pudding with chia seeds, oatmeal flakes, almonds, walnuts, cranberries, coconut milk....delicious and perfect on a hot summer morning. Several people had scrambles and loved them as well as the lemon blueberry scones. A winner in every way....just breakfast and lunch.

Yelp
Such an awesome neighborhood spot. Great breakfast, no wait times, and just an overall great homey ambience they have. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I've never dined at New Deal Cafe prior to COVID, but after my delivery experience, I cannot wait to stop here in person. After a long weekend of debauchery, I was desperate for something satisfying to bring me back to life. I hopped on postmates and here we are. 20 or so minutes later, I had one of the most delicious breakfast burritos in my hands and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. It was stuffed with eggs, fresh peppers and onions, sausage, beans and cheese and came with a side of yummy potatoes, sour cream, and delicious smoky salsa. Everything tasted perfect, despite being a delivery order. 11/10 would order again. thank you!!!!!!

Karina A.

Yelp
The menu looks enticing, but out if three dishes the only thing that was good was the sauce on the BLT. Biscuit was dry and did not come with gravy. Eggs were very greasy. Greens were very bitter. Ham sandwich was just ok. Service was good.
google avatar

Yelp
The place for all your breakfast and lunch needs in Rose City Park. Amazing scrambles, breakfast burritos, and sandwiches. Farm scramble is my go-to. Ample vegetarian/vegan options and substitutions -- the veggie sausage is the living end. Always friendly and speedy service, too. Post-COVID they have a stellar system for ordering online and picking up, taking all social distancing and cleanliness precautions. If you haven't been there yet, you need to give them a go!

Yelp
I went here several weeks ago. It was fine , my food was good. However, I found hair in my food after the first few bites and could not eat it. I told the server and was given a punch card fully punched. I felt like this was a fine way to handle it. I came back today and found out the punch card is good for a cup of coffee, not a meal. I'm very frustrated that my meal was ruined, not replaced or comped. Really disappointing service.
google avatar

Paul I.

Yelp
New Deal is one of my favorite local restaurants. Good quality, serve-yourself-coffee with all the fixings, and yes, they make good specialty coffee drinks and even have a punch card. Staff are friendly and it has a cool coop feel to it. I am frequent visitor for their delicious breakfasts or tasty selection of quality baked goods. They have a patio for those mild days. Parking is hit or miss but you can usually find something within a block or two.
google avatar

John O.

Yelp
I came here wth some friends and it was better than I may have expected. It's order at the counter and the menu isn't so extensive as to overwhelm you, which is good. Once you order, the bring food to you and you can get your own water and coffee. The food came out in good portion sizes and for a really good price. I got the farm scramble with the chicken apple sausage, which I recommend. They also have a lot of vegetarian friendly options, which I think is good for a wider variety of people. The staff was really friendly when they interacted with us at the counter and when they brought out our food for us. Definitely wouldn't mind coming back here.

Khadija S.

Yelp
One of the worst breakfast spots I been too. The server messed up my order and gave me bacon. If you don't eat meat or pork do not go here. They don't give a fuck about your preferences. I will NEVER be coming back.

Brian C.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this cafe when I first moved to Portland in 2017 and finally found my way back today. So sooo good! It will NOT be another 5 years before I return.

Yelp
New Deal Cafe, nestled sweetly in NE Portland, is really incredible. This is a great place to study or have a breakfast/brunch with friends, family, and coworkers. On nice days you can sit outside on the patio or take in the Halsey St view out front. I recommend the egg sandwich. It is the perfect combination of salty and savory. The crunch of the sourdough and bacon pair perfectly with the softness of the egg and cheese. This time, I ordered the sandwich with a spinach salad, which came with fresh feta, apples, strawberries, and candied hazelnuts. It was one of the best meals I've had in Portland yet! The coffee is always fresh and the service is incredibly efficient and friendly. This is my favorite breakfast spot in the PNW!

Yelp
New Deal Cafe may need some New Deal policies of their own... The 3 R's: Relief: Alright I'll give them that. They are a relief from other crowded, long wait brunch coffee shops. Recovery: Hopefully they can recover from their slow decline in stars on Yelp reviews. Reform: They'll need to change up something to have me coming back. The bf and I walked into this place without a prob. It's without a crowd, nice and open, and it's probably a great place to bring a book, catch up with friends, and relax. We ordered some coffees and food at the counter and sat ourselves down in a booth. There's also a garden patio or child play area option. The staff & place really aren't the prob. I got a scramble with veggie sausage and the bf got the usu breakfast burrito. Maybe a McCormick truck got overturned somewhere and they didn't get their salt and spice delivery this week, but both were completely bland. I felt like I had overpaid for a breakfast that I didn't even want to eat. The biscuit was decent, but nothing I couldn't head elsewhere for. I wanted to love this place esp for their long breakfast hours (til 4pm), but I just dont' think I'll be headed back. Sorry, New Deal. No deal.
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
I normally am not a negative reviewer but this is just more so the restaurant knows. I ordered a delivery breakfast burrito with bacon added, potatoes and biscuits. Now I am absolutely one of those people who loves burnt bacon; however this was so burnt that it was absolutely bitter and tasted like chemicals. The rest of the burrito was unseasoned and since the bitter, burnt bacon was sprinkled throughout, I couldn't eat it. The potatoes were pretty good but also a little burnt. The biscuits had delicious flavor but were dry and cold (which could certainly be due to delivery). It made for a super unpleasant experience. Maybe just an off day but this was so disappointing when I wanted a lil fancy breakfast treat which is a rare thing for me.

Alex D.

Yelp
Friendly staff and homey environment. I never leave hungry because they portion the food well. I don't want too many people to know about this place because I selfishly want to always have a table.
google avatar

Spencer B.

Yelp
New Deal Cafe has become my coffee shop of choice in this neighborhood for when I need to buckle down and get some work done on my laptop. I love the extra strong "hairbender" drip coffee option for days when I need a little extra oomph to get through my projects, and the food I've ordered has always been fresh and surprisingly flavorful (I say surprisingly only because as a largely plant-based individual I've had way too many bland veggie sandwiches--not the case here!). The baristas have always been pleasant and efficient, the atmosphere is laid back, and there are plenty of seating options that have outlets for charging gizmos and gadgets. Long story short, my loyalty card is filling up fast. Cheers!
google avatar

Totem M.

Yelp
Ok. I've been coming here since it first opened over a decade ago. It's had ups and downs over the years but it's currently in a downward trend from my past three visits. Tables were dirty, no silverware or coffee... all in the meantime the hipster fellow is on his smartphone behind the counter instead of doing the basics. The food has also been hit or miss. Order the same dish 5 times in a row and it's only the same dish 2 out of 5 times? Not a good ratio. I was not even going to post but maybe the owners will see this and take necessary measures to ensure we at least have clean utensils. Will change my review as this place improves.
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
Food is really good here. The service is really quick and that's good because they are busy on the weekends. I may be in the minority here but the kid's play area is the worst. The kids are screaming and the parents ignore them. I get that kids are loud but is a play area really necessary?
google avatar

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot for solid, classic brunch without a crazy wait. We come here every couple of weeks. I hear they make other great things, but the scrambles are so great, it's hard to pull me away! Theye been so sweet and accommodating of dietary restriction, and they fixed the one incorrect order I've ever had with no fuss. I don't have celiac, but I'm sensitive to gluten - I've eaten many a scramble without an issue. The back patio is a great, dog-friendly spot in the summer - it can be a bit noisy inside when it's busy. Maybe try some ceiling swag to dampen the sound? Pro-tip: if you have to go for a fasting blood draw at Providence, this is a great place for breakfast afterwards - they open at 7am, way before most places!
