3 Best Day Trips from Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"This iconic Northern Beaches spot began as a humble pub—now, after a stylish conversion by the Merivale group, it's a sprawling indoor-outdoor restaurant with an embarrassment of dining options. Head here for a leisurely lunch after a swim at nearby Newport Beach (about a 15-minute walk away). There's no better way to recover than on the sunny terrace, tangy watermelon marg in hand—and the food is optimal for grazing, with a few 'food zones' to choose from (try Vinnie's wood-fired pizza, or the freshly-shucked oysters from the seafood market)." - Sophie Davies

Worth the Drive! I won’t lie — it was a 40-minute drive for me, but absolutely worth it. The venue is open-air with beautiful views and a relaxed, spacious layout. Whether you’re after a bar, café, or pizza — they’ve got it all. I went with the pizza and a drink and it was delicious. The staff were attentive, and the whole place is very well kept. Highly recommend for a laid-back day out!

Google
The Newport – ★★★★☆ Great spot for a relaxed meal with a beautiful view of the water. The food was fresh and tasty, and the overall vibe is super chilled — perfect for a sunny afternoon. Plenty of space, a nice variety of seating, and a lively atmosphere without feeling too crowded. Service was decent, and everything came out quickly. Would definitely come back. A solid place for good food, great vibes, and stunning surroundings.

Late home, we needed simple for a light dinner and our hosts said let's go to the Newport. My expectations of a little neighbourhood bar were, to say the least, incorrect. It is a massive sprawling complex overlooking the top end of Pittwater. I didn't have time to explore all of its delights! We parked at a table overlooking the water, just as the sun was setting, and if you read this review and are left wondering when would be a good time to go, check Google for 'sunset time in Sydney today' and make sure to get there a little before that. It was just lovely. We settled on some draft pale ales, and decided what to eat. Choices, choices. Pizzas from the pizza kitchen? Burgers from the Shack, or seafood from the Kiosk? Are there more outlets? Who knows, I could still be looking for them as I write ! We ended up with burgers and salt and pepper calamari from the shack, ordered and given some gizmo that alerted us as to when our order was ready. And when it duly buzzed and whirred, off we traipsed to collect - we were our own wait staff. Not sure I liked this....bit like having a dog and having to bark yourself if you ask me.... I would have preferred someone to bring it, except (one supposes) it would tire the staff out looking for the punters over the course of a shift.... numbered tables might be an option? Anyway, the kids portions turned out perfect for a light treat and we left happy. Go back? Yes, definitely for the sunset and a couple of beers, and in fairness the kids meals were plenty big enough for us.

Google
Amazing atmosphere, amazing food. I could not fault this place (except ridiculously expensive) but worth it for the views & atmosphere!! Wow. We will be back!!

Google
beautiful spot with lovely gardens and plenty of greenery. The fish burgers were fresh and tasty, with crisp chips on the side. A relaxed place for a casual meal with a view.

Google
Super popular place with good pizzas. We picked a very windy winter day, so frozen a bit in the elements. Staff were flat out but worked hard. One meal didn't arrive as they were just so busy, but they issued a refund.. Nice cocktail selection.

When the weather is fine this was for us a 10 out of 10 pub experience. Not many hotels can boast water views like the Newport. On the first visit the weather was fantastic and the numerous bars at the venue provided ample seating. We had a recommendation to try their pizzas which were delicious when served fresh from the oven. A bottle of rose and live music capped off a wonderful experience. A special Mention to the staff who were cheerful and made our experience enjoyable. We visited the Newport again but unfortunately much of the venue is outdoors and the weather restricted where we could sit. When the weather allows we highly recommend the Newport for a pub experience with a lunch added in. This is one of greater Sydney’s best pubs on the list to visit.

Google
Didn’t have a photo with the food & drinks because the view was stunning, especially during sunset. Best outdoor beer garden kinda area to hang out. Food was really good with diverse options (pizza, burgers, finger food, etc) and the whole vibe was amazing. And of course, it’s a Merivale venue

Yelp
Good, food is good and the vibe is great, prices are INSANE but it's Sydney so what more could you wish for. The service is always nice, some people are kind, some ain't.

Yelp
It's been built up a lot since I came here last. I used to love coming here years ago when I lived in the area. It's a Merivale establishment now and it's been totally redone. With multiple bars and food options the menu was a bit disappointing to be honest. Food being served in cardboard boxes was just a bit unappealing when you are seated outside with gorgeous views. It's also a real waste of packaging. My burger was ok and the food was pretty average for the price. I would have expected a bit more considering we were there long before the crows arrived. Staff are super nice and friendly and the ambience is good. The water spray outside is a nice touch to cool you down on a warm day. The band playing that day was pretty bad and unfortunately we were sitting very close to them which did not help. I am sure I will be back again and I hope they move to a more sustainable way of serving food in the future.

Yelp
Local reviewer* Classic spot! Great summer and spring vibes. Food is better nowadays. Dunno about company owner.

Yelp
This place actually feels much more like a resort than a pub but then again I suspect that it has a lot to do with the location, right up near the top end of the Northern Beaches. However, there is still a pub here, though it really wasn't one of my favourites. I guess that it seemed to be just that little too resorty for my tastes, and the staff weren't really the best, though they weren't necessarily bad. I think I'll pass on this one next time.

Yelp
We were hungry after exploring in the area so my aunt decided that we should eat and enjoy the views at The Newport. This place is massive with about half a dozen food options to choose from. A decent variety of options but damn, things are (over)priced here. We decided to eat at The Shack and get drinks from Will & Co. - Melon madness ($9.00 AUD) - smallest cup of cold pressed juice I've seen in my life! My cousin said it was too sweet and didn't taste great. Skip it. - Summer coffee granita ($6.00 AUD) - this was one of their drink specials. Lots of whipped cream on top. My aunt said she enjoyed it. - Fries ($6.00 AUD) - a good amount and the fries were well seasoned and crispy. - Salt & pepper calamari ($21.00 AUD) - lime, white pepper, chili and garlic. The calamari cools down quite quickly but it's lightly fried and you get a good amount. The slices of chili peppers (not spicy) and cilantro is a nice touch. - Black quinoa & zucchini salad ($18.00 AUD) - black quinoa, roasted zucchini, rocket, almonds, goat's curd and preserved lemon dressing. This was actually really good! More than you'd expect and for a salad, it's really tasty (with the crunchy almonds and savoury goat cheese). This was my favourite. - Chicken schnitty ($19.00 AUD) - crumbed breast, cheese, butter lettuce, b&b pickles and aioli. It also came with a side of bean sprout salad. How sad is that? My cous liked the schnitzel but left pretty much all of the sprouts. The food is decent but you're paying for the views and atmosphere here. Might be more worth it if you're a big group with mixed tastes.

Yelp
I went here for dinner with my family. I give the food 3 stars, but i add 1 more star for the view. Its a good place to hangout with your family. You can take many pictures here. The view are very beautiful. You can also watch sunset here. Sometimes they have live music. The place is very cozy and they also have places for kids to play. For the food i ordered pizza, fish and chips, chicken sandwich all taste average. You can also bring your pets here! CONCLUSION = RECOMMENDED!!

Yelp
The two of us had an amazing lunch here today. The salads were very tasty and huge, and the cocktails were great. The real standout was the service. Our waitress Ella was one of the best we have ever encountered. We were both very grateful for her service. Go early, sit in the table service area overlooking Pittwater, and relax and enjoy. Will be back.

Yelp
Extremely overrated and overpriced. Great outlook, terrible set up. All the locals would prefer the Bayfields still owned the venue, because Merivale does absolutely nothing for regulars, Justin doesn't even buy the locals a beer at Xmas.

Yelp
Came here for drinks when visiting family in nearby Collaroy. The grounds of The Newport are large and impressive, with various food options including pizza, noodles, seafood and coffee and pastries. Food and drink is reasonably priced for the type of establishment. There are beautiful views over the harbour and a lovely relaxing space for al fresco dining and drinks. There is also a stage for live music, and a large kids play area. Plenty to please families, groups and couples alike. The weather was a bit chilly on our visit, but I can imagine it gets really busy when the sun is out, so it would be advisable to book. I will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Fabulous place. Great views, friendly service, good menu. For lunch we sat under cover by the lake front, with an awesome view out over the water. There was space for the kids to move around and a waiter who stayed on top of our needs throughout. Just perfect. Others had delicious fish and chips, which I sampled. I had a prawn and bugs pasta, a great dose of Aussie seafood. All with a nice bottle of Australian white wine. What a way to spend a sunny spring day. The whole facility is large and complicated. Lots of different food areas. Quite varied seating areas. Some food is self serve; some has waitstaff. Great views abound, but not everywhere.

Yelp
Went here the other day 'cos i thought the heat might have gone out of it and it might be less crowded. Mistake. Forgot it was school holidays. There were a thousand kids and all of them were happy and playing and running around, it was great. Saw Justin Hemmes but had to brush him because I was trying to decide between pizza, a plate of pumpkin salad (yeah, right) and a bucket of prawns. Keeno and my brother each had a salad, D2 had a pizza and I had the prawns. Pizza won. Its a brilliant refurb as you would expect and I am delighted it is starting to show its hidden potential. More to come no doubt but so far so good. It would have been 5 stars but the prawns were $30 + and thats just a little OTT. The pizzas on the other hand looked sensational and were reasonably priced at about $22. D2 wins again, and she wouldn't let me try some even though I paid, chip off the old block that girl.

Yelp
Probably one of the biggest pubs in NSW with a massive outdoor area and amazing water views. On sunny weekends this place becomes extremely crowded and parking is a pain. Other than that they have great food options. The Prawn bucket and Pizza's are my favorite.

Yelp
Went here on a Sunday afternoon and well worth the trip out. Great casual outdoor dining with live jazz. Lots of dining options with a number of shacks serving different menus. Excellent waterfront views and areas for kids to play. Dog friendly

Yelp
First time I entered here I felt as if I was entering a fairy tale. Great new set up from the previous run down establishment. Food rather expensive, diner burger is good though with a large portion of fries. Different food areas in the garden area which is nice to reduce queues. Plenty of seating so you can usually find a spot!

Yelp
This place is unmissable if you are exploring the area. The best place for a drink with a view! Glorious beer garden with views of Pittwater. Food is delicious. The kids play area is fun with a lovely cafe with delicious scones for the morning too.

Yelp
Still a nice view even though had it's covered by the grotesque renovations. Drinks list is worse than your average bowlo at far greater cost.

Yelp
The first time I went to the Newport, it felt like I was in an adult version of Disney Land: huge venue, beautiful setup and food at every corner. As in every Merivale establishment, The Newport is nicely decorated with different atmosphere at each corner and many options for food and drinks. I wish I was living closer!

Yelp
Been several times with and without children and love the variety of soaces and fresh food selections. Only need to get in quick cause seating is limited. Waiting for food from different locations means food comes out at different times. But live music is great. Security a bit dopey

Yelp
Wonderful place! Great food, atmosphere, views, drink selection AND a "kids club" so we could truly relax & enjoy ourselves. Would definitely recommend.
