How to Plan a Ski Trip to Purgatory Resort in Colorado

Google
Absolutely love the Nugget! We come here often, summer and winter, the menu is consistent, and the food is tasty! The beer is what you want to come for! All summer long there is live music, fire pit is roaring on cold nights, great spot! If your driving to Subversion, this joint is your halfway point, and worth the stop!

Google
The Nugget is a great apres ski or post-trail respite. Carpooling is recommended, as there is very limited parking on the dirt parking lot. The dirt parking lot has a tendency to become an enthusiastic mud pit if it's rained in the past day or so or as the snow melts... It is, after all, a Mountain bar. Good selection of local beer, great food from the food truck, and the owners are down to earth and friendly. Great vibe and great views! Plenty of room for dogs and their attentive handlers outside on the patio or in the garden.

Google
A low-key bar we stopped at for a quick bite after exploring Purgatory Resort in Durango, Colorado. We ordered Bacon Cheese Burger Slider and Fillet Mignon Slider. It was so good, however my Spicy Cajun Fries were a little bit too salty for my palate. It appeared as if they were under staff on the day we're there. I know customers are expected to clean after themselves but we have to clean our tables and put away whatever previous customers left behind.

Google
Locals are all so great! Thanks everyone for your recommendations! Bar tenders made great drinks!good tunes, awesome snacks, and overall a cozy warm welcome vibe! Play corn hole (aka bags) out by the fire pit while listening to local live music, grab a booth and play shut the box, or hide out in the nook and play some foos ball.

Google
Heard great things about this place and their sliders. I’m sure the beer is great too. But this message is specifically to the business owner or the people who are running the business. Why would you make your spring hours closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays? Not sure if I got that correct but that’s what I heard from the voice message. Springtime is like the most popular time of the year to go out To eat and drink. There are thousands of tourists that passed through here every week you should think about maybe opening up the first half of the week. And if you are closed, at least make that known on Google or navigation so that people don’t show up and waste time.

We stopped at this amazing place for lunch and we were so happy with the service the atmosphere and the food. The crab cake sliders were amazing. We met a local named Tim who has the best advice you could ever want to live on a mountain.

Google
Like a little shack in the woods with unbelievably incredible food. Love this place! Went tonight but already planning to return Friday. It's truly a hidden gem! Example: wonderful green salad with beets and a lemon vinaigrette with slices of 100% grass-fed filet mignon which was super delicious. My husband had the filet mignon slider with garlic fries which I couldn't help but steal his fries. It was really good and a very quaint ski chalet feel. Seriously worth the stop. 😋💕

Google
This is a great little dive bar just 2 minutes from purgatory. They have a good selection of beer. For food they have Backcountry gourmet food truck. Now these guys have like three of these food trucks up here in The Durango area. They make really good sliders and french fries. Not a huge selection but what they do offer is done very well. Great atmosphere and they have live music occasionally. Definitely a great option if you don't want pizza from the old school house and you are staying at purg.

Amber G.

Yelp
Are here yesterday and it was so good we came back today. Might have over did it. Ate enough for 5 people, but it's that good. Had two orders of grilled cheese and soup. The grilled cheese is Texas toast filled with cheese and pesto, then fried. Got 3 filet mignon sliders with blue cheese. And tried the shrimp tacos. We will be back tomorrow lol

Shannon M.

Yelp
The Nugget has very tasty cocktails and cold beer coupled with some of the best food in the area by Backcountry Gourmet! Ohemgee! Delicious sliders and terrific fries. It's a "must do" if you're anywhere near Purgatory.

Beth S.

Yelp
Awesome mountain vibe. Yummy sliders. Tons of Apres ski parties. Don't forget to do a shot ski!

Rafael G.

Yelp
You've probably passed by this place on your way to Purgatory ski. Do yourself a favor and stop by. This is total mountain vibes. The bar is small but there's 2 levels of seating. The bartender was friendly and attentive. The real gem is the food truck inside. Here's what we had: Bbq bacon cheeseburger slider- Grass fed beef with topped with bacon, cheese and an onion ring. Very filling! Garlic fries- garlic was too heavy but the fries were fried perfectly. Tomato basil bisque- Get this now! It was amazing. The best part is the deep fried grilled cheese crouton. I don't know who thought of this but you're a genius! I highly recommend stopping by

Amy M.

Yelp
Great place to stop after a long day of skiing! So fun to stories near the fire pits! Excellent drinks and the sliders are delicious. Friendly bartenders!

Alison V.

Yelp
We love the nugget. It's a Durango staple and perfect, winter or summer, for some food and a beer. Great service and people!

Teddy O.

Yelp
Coolest spot right outside of Purgatory. Not a ton of seating but that may be what makes it special. The filet mignon slider is a9.2/10. The truffle fries, delicious! Friend said the zucchini slider was a 9.5

Lisa Y.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch after an afternoon of cross-country skiing. The seating areas were small but we did find a table upstairs. We ordered a filet mignon slider, two crab cake sliders, and a zucchini slider along with chips and guacamole. All of it was delicious. I especially enjoyed the crab cake slider. I didn't see the beer selection, because i ordered the food, while my partner ordered the beer. We both had a Voodoo Ranger IPA, which I enjoyed. There are chairs out front by a fire pit, which looked fun, but I had just pulled all my warm clothes off in the car, so preferred to sit indoors. Great ambience and delicious food. I would definitely return.

Emma G.

Yelp
SO GOOD! 100% stop here after boarding/skiing instead of eating at the mtn. GREAT food (especially the burgers, including vegetarian option) at good price... 4 stars instead of 5 because it is a bit tight and can get uncomfortably hot if you aren't near a window or outside.

John S.

Yelp
We've driven by this bar countless times on the way to Silverton from Durango. It's just 2 miles south of Purgatory Ski Resort. The place always looked super packed. Never stopped, until today. They had a live country singer from Fort Worth, Texas playing. Bubba Bellin sang some covers and did a few of his original songs. He definitely had some energy and easily electrified the crowd. This bar has magnificent mountain views (8,804-foot elevation), a food truck, spacious outdoor seating and two-story indoor seating. My wife and I ordered a Colorado Kolsch from Steamworks and a Mexican Lager from Ska. In addition to these, they also had the following beers on tap: Elevated IPA from La Cumbre in New Mexico (by far my favorite IPA), PBR, Mountain Standard Juicy, hazed IPA from Odells, Coors Light, and Fat Tire by New Belgium brewing. The outdoor seating area contained gas firepits, Jenga, cool benches made from old skis and snowboards, and they were pet friendly. Some of the seating had shade canopies as well. Staff, customers, pets, and guest singer were all in a great mood and joyful. I don't remember how much we paid for our beers, but I know they were reasonably priced. A great atmosphere to enjoy some pints and/or eat some gourmet food from the Backcountry Gourmet food truck.

Erka W.

Yelp
Visited Durango for the first time and stayed just down the street from The Nugget. Stopped in our first night since we were ready for some good Colorado beer and we were not expecting such a delicious food truck! My husband ordered the Alaskan Ale, which ended up being our favorite (sorry CO breweries). We ordered the filet sliders and crab cake slider to go with our beers. Dee-lic-ious!! We went back and got a second round of everything, beer AND burgers! Friendly bartender and friendly customers! Ended up back a second night because we enjoyed it so much!

Rachel L.

Yelp
Great restaurant and bar. Outside fire pits, drinks and food from inside food truck. Gourmet Sliders and fries

Bob G.

Yelp
Have loved going to the Nugget over the years until today. Stood there waiting for someone to wait on me for 20 mins, then moved to a table... waited another 10... crickets!!

Dana W.

Yelp
New favorite bar in Colorado. Loved the locals and Ashley was the best! Was lucky to be there for 80s night and had a blast!!!

Dorothy D.

Yelp
Best bartender and food truck around the mountain. Laid back and great people watching.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
I wish I wasn't touring hair. This would be my local hangout. I absolutely love this place. The coolest ambience. Order your food from the truck outside. Two toasty fires outside. And a really fun little bar inside with a cool little upstairs. I thought the decoration was super adorable. Skiing decoration everywhere. Fun music, happy people, and the food was really really good. I thought the price was on point. The sliders are about $6 a piece. you would probably order two of them for dinner or one for a snack. They have multiple flavors of french fries as well. All of them looked good. We got two different flavors which were awesome. Although I didn't order beer, their beers looked really good too. Everything about this place was fabulous.

Jooy C.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem and I'm so glad I got to experience it during my time in Durango! We ordered food from the food truck outside then sat down inside the bar to grab some drinks. They were very accommodating for our big group and let us sit in the attic (second floor area) of the bar. Loved the cozy vibes all around! Ordered some drinks there and enjoyed the throwback alternative music they played. Some food favorites include the sliders (bacon & crab cake) and shrimp tacos. Durango is still a small ski town, so not a lot of "city" life or bar-filled areas. This bar is the perfect for a chill night out if anyone wants to get out of their condos/Airbnb while staying close to Purgatory ski resort!

Carol K.

Yelp
This is a bar that serves beverages and a food truck that sells food. Food truck first- we had 3 different sliders and they were all delicious. The filet mignon, cheddar bacon burger and crab cake were our choices. I liked them all, my hubby's favorite was the bacon cheddar. We also ordered a serving of the parm garlic fries- one serving was enough for both of us! Bar had a great casual vibe to it- decor was laid back skiing theme with outside seating or tables and bar seats on two levels inside. Drinks were great! Ashley was the bartender and she made great adult beverages and made everyone feel welcome. Clientele was a mixture of locals and tourists- I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a laid back affordable evening!

Steve M.

Yelp
Absolutely blown away by the quality and the selection from the food truck at the Nugget - we were not expecting such incredible food. We got crab cake sliders with a side of Parmesan Truffle fries, and the tomato bisque- everything was incredible! There was a pretty solid band playing as well, and the outside seating was great. We'll definitely be stopping here every time we're in town!

Kyle M.

Yelp
Great small place food is good and drinks are cold. Always a good place to catch some laughs around the bar

Rylee K.

Yelp
Sliders from the food truck are an absolute MUST, literally come to visit just for those incredible sliders. Not to mention how cute the hang out area is and the people are always so sweet and fun to talk to.

Lee G.

Yelp
Limited menu but what they do they do well. Sliders and fries. Live music, casual vibe, kid and dog friendly...one of our favorite places in the area for sure!

Amanda G.

Yelp
Such a great bar! This was right next to our Airbnb so we had drink tickets to use and checked it out. It was always busy and everyone is so nice! They have an attached food truck like spot that serves up a few different dishes such as shrimp tacos, sliders and fries. All of our drinks were good and they have fun games to play. The outdoor space around the fires we're definitely a popular spot!

River M.

Yelp
This place is awesome great drinks and the food truck our back is amazing came here after a day of snowboarding and loved it will definitely be back!!!!

Linnea T.

Yelp
Honestly a great place. I don't know many food trucks that sell sweat bands with their logo on it but more places should do it. I forgot I ate here and that's why I gave it four stars but I still enjoyed myself. Great music, greater views. Found confetti that looked like di***.

Joseph H.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, not too much seating but the food was absolutely worth it ! Not long of a wait either , definitely recommend if you come to purgatory for some time.

Oliver M.

Yelp
Most amazing cheeseburger/slider I've ever had in my life. Great service, awesome, friendly, genuine staff. Would recommend anyone within the area to come here!!! Wish there was one in Arizona!!

Kristi W.

Yelp
This is a great little hole in the wall and I mean that in a good way. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger slider and the filet mignon slider. Both were amazing! The fries were a little too crunchy for my taste. This is a very lively place with a fun crowd. We will be back for more sliders for sure.

Rebecca K.

Yelp
Hidden Gem!!! Great food amazing prices!! Heard about this place for years finally went. Been back twice this week!

Laura M.

Yelp
This was actually much more than I was expecting. You order food outside and drinks inside, bit you can sit anywhere. There is a really nice patio with fires going but we opted for inside. It's pretty clean and they play good alternative music. Was a very comfortable vibe. But wouldn't suggest for big groups to sit inside, mostly small bar tables and can only fit 2 or 3 together, but wasn't busy when we went so it was fine. The food truck food was AMAZING. We tried a lot of items, all just so tasty. The crab cake slider was absolutely delicious, but a bit salty. The fries are enormous portions, could easily share between 3 or 4. The tomato bisque was a favorite as well. The chimichurri fries were my personal favorite. I thought everything was very inexpensive for the portions, a nice change from resorts. The bar has a full bar and offers some of the honey liquors. My hot toddy was really good, and everyone enjoyed their beers. Really loved this place, will go every year now that we know!

Tim M.

Yelp
Good food and solid drinks We sampled a little of everything sliders were bomb, perfect fries and salad!!

Kai E.

Yelp
Great environment, awesome food and fairly priced drinks I have always had a great time and no wait at the bar plus the staff is very friendly

Aaron S.

Yelp
Nice spot to eat and have a few beers. Especially after a fun day at Purgatory Ski Resort. We got food from the food truck outside, which was a little pricey but worth it.

Melissa C.

Yelp
I love this bar and food truck! The staff is wonderful, the bartenders especially. The food is very good, and the beer is cold and crisp. You will not find a view that rivals the views from the outdoor patio. The vibe is relaxed, fun and so Colorado! This place does not do itself justice from the road, but try it and you will become a regular.

Chris O.

Yelp
Place is fantastic!! Drinks are good and people are friendly. The food is outstanding the sliders and salad with tenderloin is perfect. I think I ate there four days in a row. Much better than anything at resort. I was up there for a two week construction job. It's a must stop place

Cheap-chuck Y.

Yelp
This bar and restaurant is a hidden gem. The BBQ slider was absolutely tantalizing!!!

Gary J.

Yelp
During our stay in Purgatory (always sounds funny), we walked down an old road and then a bit on the edge of the highway to get to the Nugget. I had a pork belly and a crab cake slider for $6 ea. from the food truck parked on the property. They were both good. On tap they had at least five selections of beer, 2 IPAs. Odell Brewing Mountain Standard Juicey Hazy was my choice...really liked it. This is a nice place to sit, talk, and enjoy the views of the mountains. Even saw a black bear on the walk back. Gave it plenty of space and time to go where it wanted. Need to add COVID info: wear masks to order and pick up food, plenty of room to eat and drink physically separated. And everyone was super friendly.

Mark M.

Yelp
If you live in Durango, vacation here, or are just passing through you must stop here. And after you do you'll be back. The best group of bartenders (Kellie, Travis, Steve, Darien, Crocker) exude Colorado friendliness and pour good drinks and cold beer. And the guys in the food truck make the best sliders and fries. Not to mention the best burrito for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. And in the summer the outdoor patio is super dog friendly. Tip your servers well!!!

Taylor P.

Yelp
We came in to ski over Super Bowl weekend and this was the only place we're went out to and it was a blast!!! Ashley the bartender rocked it with a packed house, got the filet slider and the crab cake slider with a side of truffle fries- better than 90% of any steakhouses I've ever been in. Never heard a bad song come up on the playlist and the atmosphere was everything you could hope in a mountain bar, The Nugget is now part of the family ski tradition!!!!

Eddie G.

Yelp
The best stop after a day of skiing at Purg or in the summer to get out of the heat at home. The bar is adorable and service is always great. The food at the attached food trailer is phenomenal. The tomato bisque is aces and the chimichurri fries always hit the right note. Wonderful place to hang out for a few drinks and a delicious meal.

Carlos M.

Yelp
Wow! What a cool spot and great hangout! The best Margaritas and the vibe is super cool. Went there twice this weekend. Great live music and great food. Can't wait to go again!

Andy H.

Yelp
Nugget is our spot, our happy place when we visit, no place better to be and the staff and owner are the best!!

Noelle R.

Yelp
Definitely a unique spot. Decent quality and prices for being in the middle of nowhere. The best slider was the crab one, I wouldn't get the filet one again. The fries were a bit over cooked and crunchy. Everything had great flavor though and was fresh. The outside area was nice but too cold to sit out there.

Mary M.

Yelp
Food, Service, Ambiance....it's all good at The Nugget. Lunch time or dinner with the sun going down.

Brad E.

Yelp
An awesome stop along 550 north of Durango. Don't be put off by the rustic exterior. Inside you will find a super chill bar with local tap beer and a GOURMET food truck. Crab cake sliders and spicy shrimp tacos were TDF.

Lisa L.

Yelp
Used to be great, now not so much. Bartender doing shots while many were waiting. Crossing off my list of favorite places.

Dayna B.

Yelp
This is a fantastic little mountain bar in the middle of nowhere full of beautiful views and great vibes!!! Tons of outdoor seating with fire pits etc. The drinks were ON POINT - our bartender Ashley was AMAZING, she made KILLER fresh margaritas and went out of her way to make everyone in our "out-of-town" group feel like a regular. I will definitely return and recommend to any friends visiting the area.

Melissa C.

Yelp
Great bar, fun atmosphere, beautiful new outdoor patio area with lots of space and awesome fire pits. Food truck soup and sliders are consistently well made and delicious. Say hi to the crew for me, they make everyone feel at home, like a local whether you live down the street or across the country.

Jenny S.

Yelp
We come to The Nugget every time we are in Durango. It has a real local hometown feel. The winter bartender, Fox, is a real gem! Keep him around!
