I spent 5 nights at this hostel. The atmosphere is quite historic and is a remimder of the Nunnery itself. However, the beds are very old and have noise because of the springs. The facilities are again old except the kitchen and the backyard, which are renovated.

I had stayed for 3 nights and started in a 12 bedroom, but ended up moving to a 4. Great location and right next to tram stop. Nice common area and fun building. Courtyard looks like a great spot to hang, but unfortunately it was raining and cold while I was there. The gentleman at night reception is very friendly and helpful! (Sorry, I don’t know if I got his name.) Towels are provided and showers at great. The whole theme of it being a “Nunnery” is fun.
Now for the downsides, it is on the pricier end for what you get. The rooms are pretty smelly and messy with clothes and stuff. I think long term guests start to get a little sloppy. It also seems to attract a very loud crowd, even with signs posted people would still be blow drying their hair, blasting speakers and just being noisy in the room at 11PM. The second night I had stayed a few folks had “moved in” and set up what looked like a homeless camp between all the bunks, complete with a TV and strobe lights. I ended up just having to pay extra at reception to move rooms after I explained what was going on.
Not a gripe but would just recommend to add some tea towels to the kitchen so guests can dry dishes and clean up after themselves.
I might stay again if I got a good deal. However outside of the location and the great staff, it is expensive for what you get at $40+ a night.

We were there for a short stay 16 years ago , beautiful architecture, nice room, fresh food in the kitchen , breakfast was free. At night the lounge always had party, shower room had hot water , balcony was my studying place in the morning.

I had a delightful little single bed room to myself. With a small heater. And TV. It was cozy and relaxing. I had a great sleep. And it is a beautiful building inside and out, being an ex nunnery. I really like this place. I think this is where I will stay every time I’m in Melbourne. If you’re keen to join in with the good times with all the 20 something year old backpackers, you indeed have that option too. Haha

If I could give 0 stars I would!
The room did not look ANYTHING like the photos advertised! So overpriced, especially for a hostel.
The staff were rude and gaslight you if you mention any problems.
The hostel smelt of marijuana.
The other guests were loud all night despite the noise policy.
The room was filthy, the bedsheets had yellow stains all over them, the blankets were full of dust, we asked for new ones and were given the wrong size (too small) and these new "fresh" sheets were just as filthy. I was up most of the night struggling to breathe as I gave asthma and can not tolerate the dust.
The TV did not work either.
The heater did not work and having a single thin blanket is not enough in this cold weather.
The shower. Oh my that shower was ridiculous! The hot water took 5 minutes to activate and only just drips out, like someone is slowly pouring water on you from a bottle. When you turn the cold water on it cancels out the hot water! So you can either freeze or boil. No in between.

Beautiful heritage building. Quiet and clean. There are mostly young people but they are not rowdy partiers ..wine, conversation and laughter is usually the evening event. The rooms are clean and the staff work hard to keep everything so. The only cons would be the bathroom down the hall rather than in room, tiny kitchen and no lift. But i would absolutely stay here. again

The Nunnery is a hostel with character. The location is fantastic, next to beautiful gardens and an easy walk or tram ride into the city. The staff were super great and helpful. They have a "quiet after 10pm" rule which sadly some of the guests rudely ignored but that's hostels / other people for you I guess haha. I almost never had to wait for a shower, water pressure was good, all facilities clean and functioning. Nice lounge for chilling in and rooftop space as well as courtyard.

My favourite hostel in Australia. A Melbourne institution for backpackers. This was the first place we stayed in Australia and it couldn’t of been more perfect for what we wanted. Extremely well run, loads of connections with the local area so great place to get aquatinted with the city. Very social, which is promoted by the hostel but not forced - something we struggled to enjoy in other places we stayed. An amazing place to meet cool/creative/fun people.
