The Old Black Lion

We recently had a family dinner at The Old Black Lion the night before our wedding, and many of our guests stayed at the hotel for the weekend. From start to finish, everything was absolutely perfect. The food was incredible, everyone commented on how delicious their meals were, and the staff were so warm, friendly, and attentive. James couldn’t have been more accommodating; nothing was too much trouble, and he made sure everything ran smoothly. The hotel itself was fantastic. Our guests were so happy with their rooms and the wonderful hospitality they received. We have stayed at The Old Black Lion many times before and knew it would be the perfect place for our family and friends to stay while celebrating our wedding at The Globe, and it truly was. Thank you, James and the whole team, for making our weekend extra special. We can’t recommend The Old Black Lion highly enough. The people, the food, and the atmosphere are just outstanding.

This querky old pub was in a superb location. We booked two double rooms to catch up with friends. We stayed in the main pub.Rooms were extremely clean and the beds were super comfortable. Our room was really warm and cozy and quiet considering we were on the front above the pub.Staff were friendly. WIfi excellent. The only two small things that let it down were the curtain linings ,which once were very well made thermal lined curtains in their time ,but the linings were noticably threadbare .The bathrooms were spotless ,shower was hot but the cubicle needs some tlc with the sealant other than that we would of given 5 stars .We would stay here again for comfort and location .

BRILLIANT PUB! must thank the owner and staff for making me so welcome on a cold day. I could not have been made more welcome. The food (fish finger bap and fries) and latte (omg so creamy in a hot glass mug) were delicious. The smiles, the gentle music, the warmth, the cleanliness and service - all impeccable. You folks made a cold author very happy indeed. X

Stayed here overnight following a trip to Westons Cider Mill in Much Marcle as myself and my partner love Hay on Wye Our room was cosy and the bathroom was nice and clean although there was no soap by the sink The bed was comfy but the room was very warm. The walls are also thin and as we were staying above the bar we could hear people talking until about 11pm when they left. Overall we got a decent night sleep One thing that wasn't made clear was the breakfast situation When we checked in nobody asked if we'd like breakfast. I assumed it was included so I asked what time breakfast was served. I was told between 830 and 10 but the lady never said it's not included in your booking. We therefore went down for 9am and we're served 2 full English breakfasts However when we checked out I was presented with a bill for £24 for the 2 breakfasts At no point was it made clear that it wasn't included. This was a disappointing end to our stay and is the reason for 3 star rating

Walkers welcome, this is a pub and restaurant hotel; food was really good, try the sea bass. Rooms clean, warm, well-appointed; I suppose you could pick faults here and there, but you'd have to be determined. Support the non-chain hospitality industry. This was a walking trip, so we were very well served here. Good breakfast. Friendly staff. Not a budget place; good for exploring the eccentricities of the town if you like that sort of thing. Anyone visiting should consider this place.

We were looking for somewhere to eat before the rain came down, noticed the sign in the centre of town so we wandered down. (3 min walk) They warmly welcomed us in with our little crazy Staffie Olive, found a lovely BIG table for two (so many tables for two are tiny) in the corner, gave us their very friendly attention🥰 We chose haddock and chips and they were absolutely gorgeous. Husband had a lovely cheesecake. Really lovely pub. Would highly recommend 😊

Great place for a meal, very friendly welcoming staff, excellent chef. Interesting menu and a high standard of food but reasonably priced. Never knew about this pub before as it's on the less busy side of the town. But I would recommend seeking it out, a short walk from the main car park. It's much better than a certain pub near the car park in terms of quality of food and service!

We came here for the second time and were not disappointed – in fact, it was even better than our first visit. The service was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout. There’s a great selection of dishes, and everything we tried was full of flavor and really well prepared. The atmosphere is very welcoming – both dog- and child-friendly, which made it perfect for us. We’ll definitely be back!
