The Old Black Lion

We had an impromptu family lunch here and so pleased we did! Incredibly friendly and welcoming. We all really enjoyed both mains and desserts and prices were very reasonable for the quality of food. The one suggestion I would make is that more veggie options would be welcomed. Would definitely return if we are in the area.

A perfect getaway, made even more perfect with our accommodation, amazing food and service and overall hospitality. Stayed for 2 nights over the New Year festivities and we couldn't have been made more welcome. The New Years evening menu was themed (Alice in Wonderland) and it was truly incredible. Tasty, inventive and like nothing I have seen/tasted before. If you want a to stay somewhere friendly and accommodating in a quaint, cute and rural location then get booking! Can't recommend enough 😊

Staff nice enough, rear of the building looks a tad grubby, the first thing which guests see as they emerge from their cars in the (tight) car park. Room rather expensive (mid week) and shower cubicle in desperate need of refurbishment (I understand this will be addressed in January 2025) Very nice breakfast and good location for walking into town, we didn’t eat in the restaurant but I understand it has good reviews, would I want to eat there, probably not as the room seemed to lack any sort of ambiance. I was expecting a pub with a bar, in reality it’s a restaurant with a bar in the corner Would I go back, no, but I wish the owners all the very best in the difficult hospitality market, it’s a tough business to be in. To sum up, the place looks a bit tired and needs a refresh, hopefully the 2025 guests will give the Old Black Lion a glowing review .

We had two delightful meals here this week - Friday and Saturday. Amazing lamb on Friday - perfectly pink and flavoursome. We ordered extra sides, am so glad we did as the cauliflower was so magical, it took me back to my childhood and autumn evenings with its smoky mustard flavour. |Saturday (tonight) I started with duck confit which was beautifully presented and very tasty. Then moved on to the miso aubergine, in mushroom broth with noodles and black rice, which was heavenly. I adore aubergine and this was perfect. |Lovely staff, the barman and waiters became highlights of the trip as they were so lovely, and Steve and Charlene - the excellent chefs, I only wish I could take them home and have their excellent food every night!!!!

Lovely location. Room was superbly done & decorated. I have mobility issues, and it was difficult. Food was excellent. Beer quality super. A lovely, really old inn. Staff were really lovely.

We stayed here for the New Years Eve period and booked tickets for the Alice in Wonderland NYE menu. We had a fabulous time the whole team were lovely and very welcoming. ||We stayed in one of the annexes, a quirky room with lots of character which was lovely and cosy.||The food was absolutely amazing and the NYE evening was great fun!!|Amazing food, great service and an all round great few days at the Old Black Lion. We will definitely be back soon!

Exquisite meal two nights in a row. The sort of restaurant that has a select menu of items that they do really well. Had the lamb one night and the steak on the following night. Perfectly cooked. Served by polite, friendly staff. Chefs Steve and Charlene - thank you for memorable meals. We'll be back.

Amazing food ! We booked a table for two in the pub, solely based on other google ratings, and we were not disappointed ! From the starter to the pudding everything was really tasty and in good proportions ! My parter and I left the pub full and happy with our meal, we even thought that it's been a while since we enjoyed a meal from the beginning to the end without any regret (only issue we might have to come back again to try the other dishes on the menu ;) ) the location is nice, near a car park too if the one in the pub is full. We also have to thank the owner (James) and the staff, all really nice, polite and friendly. If you stop by Hay on Wye or just need a nice place to stop and eat tasty food, we would 10000000% recommend ! 👌🏻
