The Old Chocolate House

Truly the best place to start your hot chocolate journey. The service was professional and caring. The ambiance was everything we can expect from a chocolate house, and the hot chocolate… wow. They have an array of flavors and combinations that cater to all preferences. They also make amazing waffles, so definitely come prepared.

We bought 250 grams of chocolate to take home, it was incredible. We also had the chance to try their hot chocolate in the tea room, and it was honestly the best I’ve ever had. The place is beautifully decorated and has such a cozy atmosphere.

We were a little worried that this was just a gimmick, but it was totally worth it. Beautifully prepared and unique, plus delicious and rich chocolate. The waffle plain with a little bit of vanilla ice cream was a great compliment. Worth a visit!

We ordered two hot chocolates: Costa Rica (for my husband, since he is lactose intolerant) and Venezuela for me. Honestly, this was the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had in my life – rich, smooth, and so comforting. It gave me such a warm and cozy feeling. What makes this place truly special is that they let you make your own hot chocolate step by step. Mixing the chocolate into the hot milk myself was such a unique and fun touch. It made me appreciate what I was drinking on a deeper level, almost like a little ritual. The chocolate itself is high quality and full of flavor, though I did notice a high amount of cocoa butter, which makes it feel a little heavy after a while. Still, it was absolutely delicious and worth it. The atmosphere is very inviting – somewhere between a luxury café and a family kitchen – and it felt authentic, like stepping back in time. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you want to experience authentic hot chocolate in a cozy but elegant setting. It’s not cheap, but the quality and the experience make it worth every cent.

I went there with my friend I got a hot chocolate and she got a waffle. Both were actually really good, just kinda pricey. I went for the plain hot chocolate ’cause I figured the flavored ones would be too sweet. But woman, the staff were pretty rude. We came right when they opened and they still told us to wait outside, like… really? Then when we were paying, they said they couldn’t split the bill and just charged one card without explaining anything. Drinks and food were nice, but the service was a little letdown.

The tearoom was moved next door. We had a nice hot chocolate which is a must in Belgium and it was great. Also we bought some chocolate from the store, the lady there was very nice and helpful.

The hot chocolate was fantastic. Wish we could have had the experience of making our own hot chocolate at the tea room but the line was SO long. We just got hot chocolate with whipped cream at their shop next door.

The “must visit” in Brugges. The hot chocolate experience is legendary as you get a massive bowl of steamed milk (also of your choice/ options available available for lactose intolerant) and a tray of chocolate drops to whisk in yourself.

Come hungry!!! I mean it. I wanted to try everything, and we did order much more than two people could eat or drink. We had drinking chocolate and chocolate sweets and strawberries with a waffle. It was all so delicious. The furnishings and decor are also so welcoming. And the server was a delightful young woman who knew EVERYTHING about the menu and how to make recommendations.

You can't visit Belgium without having some chocolate! My husband actually found this local shop and I'm glad he did. It's way better than the overpriced, flashy Belgian chocolate chains. They have a huge variety of different chocolates and even cookies here. It's a chocolate lovers dream. I don't love chocolate and even I was in awe. We bought some chocolates for ourselves to bring home and the prices are pretty reasonable. You can pick your own pieces, and it's 10 chocolates for €15 and it comes in a cute little box with a bow. For gifts, we bought some of the pre-packaged chocolates because we couldn't decide which pieces to pick and they came with a pretty nice variety. I just wish they labeled which chocolate was which. They also sell hot chocolate, which I'm sad we didn't get to try since the chocolate was really good. Get your chocolate here if you visit Bruges!

The Old Chocolate House is a must visit if you are in Bruges. We stopped in for a few truffles and really enjoyed them all.

Hot chocolate is amazing. You can order how ever or whatever % chocolate you'd like. Amazing, a bit thicker. I would say that two people could share. 5 out of 5 stars!

You can have your own hot chocolate making experience here in the tea room upstairs. They have a good selection of chocolates and other treats. This is one of the many good places to visit.

A gem! Hot chocolate is to die for. We opted for half milk and half dark chocochips which was pretty sweet by itself. It tasted so fresh when we had it. Waffles were soft, light and paired great with the chocolate sauce. Service was great. They placed umbrellas on the sidewalk to help us sit as it was sunny outside. Their tea room was closed as they informed us they were short staffed. Great chocolate room to even shop for chocolates and goodies.

Fun hot chocolate! They give you an oversized mug of warm milk with a little plate with a small cup made out of chocolate that is filled with marshmallows and other goodies. Death by Chocolate! You add the chocolate cup to your mug of milk and they give you a little whisk to mix it all together. Very whimsical. They have a smaller version for kids too. The staff was friendly.

Wonderful quaint shop with absolutely delicious treats & Hot Chocolate done so many amazing ways. It is do it yourself. They bring you a very large cup of hot milk and you add the toppings of your choice, as many as you want, mix & enjoy. It is great and even better was watching my two granddaughters enjoy the experience

This place is so cute and they had such beautiful decorations for Christmas. The servers are so nice and helpful. It is a smaller space upstairs, but with our large group of 7 they had us at table right next to each other and it was perfect. My daughter, who is not the biggest chocolate fan, ordered 2 of the kids hot chocolate drinks and ate all of the toppings and drank all of the hot chocolate. My older daughter had the dark hot chocolate. She was fascinated with the hot milk and stirring in the chocolate pieces. She loved her drink and really enjoyed the full experience. My husband and I ordered the Forbidden hot chocolates - Choco Maison (with Grand Marnier) and Choco Baileys (with Baileys of course). They were delicious and well balanced. Stop in now if you are in Brugge!!

Stopped here as part of our walking food tour. Such a great old world vibe to this place. There is a chocolate shop downstairs, which at first glance is all you might think there is, but on the second floor, they actually have somewhat limited seating to accommodate table service - a total delight! Hubs and I tried their local hot chocolate, made the traditional way by taking an assortment of different chocolate chips and placing them into your hot milk. It was truly decadent and maybe one of the singularly best cups of hot chocolate I've ever had! To accompany it, the proprietor (multi-generational family business) offered us a few tart-like cookies, a plate of these delicious thin, crispy cookie/chip-like cookies that's hard to describe exactly, and three small chocolate bars that were amazing. We would most definitely come back if in Bruges again!

This place is known for the best hot chocolate in town, but I also had the best chocolate pralines there in my entire trip of belgium (even more than neuhaus, mary, leonidas, etc). Their chocolate is extremely inexpensive -- 7 waffles dipped in chocolate for just 3.95 euros, and I actually ate all 7 at once because it was so good! I also bought and ate the florentines, and they were crispy and light, with a perfect balance of chocolate and caramelized nuts. The real star of the place was the individual chocolate pieces - must try the tiramisu and black sesame pralines - both were heavenly and easily the two best chocolates I had in my life in general. They also had a extremely sensational lavender praline if you like lavender flavor. Wish I could try everything in this shop

This place is a must when in Bruges, especially if you're a chocolate lover. On the first floor is a chocolate shop, while their tea room is upstairs. When the place is full, you will need to wait downstairs as the space is quaint with only about 28 seats. I arrived at 4:30pm on a Saturday and waited about 15 minutes for a table. Do note that the space is very tiny, so best to come in groups of two. There are only two tables that can fit 4+, which is still limited. I ordered the Spicy Mango Hot Chocolate (€7) on their recommended menu. The fun part about getting a hot chocolate here is that they bring you a huge cup (or matter in fact, a bowl) of hot milk with the chocolate inside an edible chocolate cup on the side for you to mix yourself. Even though I am not a huge fan of chocolate, I truly enjoyed this from mixing my chocolate and milk to the added real bits of mango and chilies in my cup. If that's not enough to capture your heart here, the atmophere, decor, and vintage feel definitely should. You also get a small biscuit and chocolate bar along with your hot chocolate. This place is seriously so cute and adorning. It feels like grandma's home as she makes you a nice, warm hot chocolate to sip on. Note: Credit card is only accepted with a €15 minimum (although the clerk was very nice about me not having cash on me, oopsies).

10 out of 10 on overall experiential aspect. Six out of 10 on the hot chocolate taste. I hundred percent recommend coming here if you're ever in Belgium because it's such a fun experience where are you basically take these chocolates and plop them into this huge hot chocolate class filled with milk to make your hot chocolate to your tasting It's definitely on the pricier side as well, for hot chocolate at least, but I think it's totally worth the experience! They give you this mini whisk that is so cute to whisk in the chocolate into your hot chocolate. I don't know if it's the ratio of milk to chocolate but something about the hot chocolate just wasn't super good... Me and my friends all got the Vietnamese one! It just wasn't super creamy and kind of taste did water down because of the milk, but I don't know exactly what it was. Overall I think 100% come here because it's worth the experience but maybe try something else other than the Vietnamese hot chocolate...

"The best hot chocolate", it really was so good and rich, you can pick dark or milk hot chocolate. Lots of options and everything is really beautiful. Also, it's not actually old, it's from 1997.

A must stop in Bruges for hot chocolate. Perfect on a chilly Fall morning before starting to explore the city. While there are ton of chocolate shops in the area not many offer hot chocolate early in the morning.

A "must" experience in Bruges! if you went to Belgium and didn't try any chocolate, did you even actually go?? The Old Chocolate House is truly one of the highlights during my time in Bruges. Everything that we ordered was a 10/10. I opted for the traditional hot chocolate with a mix of milk/dark chocolate and non-dairy oat milk. The experience of making the hot chocolate is super cool because they give you the chocolate separately and you have to whisk in the chocolate into the hot milk. It was truly the best hot chocolate I have ever had in my life. I also shared a waffle with berries, which was absolutely delicious. The shop downstairs has a chocolate shop where I bought plenty of yummy souvenirs to take back home as gifts. My only regret is not buying more chocolate from here because it was so good! Note: closed on Wednesdays!

February 2018: Hot chocolate anyone? I was super pysche to try some hot chocolate at this place as it is mentioned in certain blogs. Upon walking in it's a chocolate shop, very small. We didnt see a any place to sit so we asked and told to go up the stairs. I didnt notice the stairs upon entering. Anyhow up the stairs we go and there was someone right there to greet us. He let us sit anywhere we liked and gave us menus. Oh a menu? A real menu I thought it would be a piece of paper with hot chocolate choices right? Nope they had food, beer, wine, and of course hot chocolate. Decor was really nice. Cozy feel with two decorated covered fireplaces but still has that diner feel with table cloths underneath glass table top. We weren't sure what to expect. I ordered the dark chocolate and hubby got the beer. When it came I was excited to see warm milk in a big cup and hot chocolate pieces on the side. It was so cute the chocolate pieces were in a chocolate cup. Instead of putting the pieces in little by little. I dropped the whole cup in and just stirred. The taste? It was good, just the way I love dark chocolate to be. It was alot so it was nice to just sit and take my time sipping. Great experience. I believe you can order to go if you mention it downstairs. Probably not the same experience of course. I had fun.

Chocolate shop downstairs, and a small area to sit, and have hot chocolate upstairs. You have to wait at the bottom of the steep stairs in order to be seated. The wait wasn't to terribly long, we were seated, and the waiter came quickly to take our order. He was not very helpful explaing his novelty hot chocolate Menu. You pick out the type of chocolate you want, and they bring the chocolate with warm milk, and Wah lah you proceeded to make your own hot chocolate. I wasn't a big fan. I don't know what all the hoopla is concerning having hot milk with chocolate chips turning into hot chocolate right before your eyes. I mean it took a bit of work stirring, and stirring waiting for the chocolate to melt.

We went here because it had the best reviews online. We made it just before closing and got a good variety of souvenirs to bring home.

This is a must do each time I come to Bruges. Downstairs is one of many chocolate shops but upstair is where the magic happens. The area is small and you may have to wait at the bottom of the stairs for a short time. The wait is worth it. Staff is efficient and if you have questions you should speak up and ask. They are more than happy to help if you ask but they are not going to volunteer too much. You can order the hot chocolate customized a bit to your taste. You are given a warm cup of milk and non dairy options are available. They even have the new trendy red chocolate. Want something to snack on ? They have delicious wafels too!

If you are in the mood for something unique to Belgium, that tastes great, and is full of charm this is the place you'll want to go! They bring you specialized chocolate in chocolate bowls, with a little mixing spoon. The milk even smells and tastes different! If you like hot cocoa this is the place for you. There is also a shop downstairs that sells local chocolates. If you are a tourist it's a great way to get out of the rain.

The place looks nice but the service is shit. The waitresses are very rude most likely because they are uneducated. Specially this petit waitress with tattoos all over her body. No concept of customer service whatsoever. Go elsewhere and spend your money.

The Old Chocolate House definitely lived up to the hype! I read about this place before arriving to Bruges and there was no way I was going to miss out. We popped in mid-morning and had our choice of tables. There is an entire menu of options but I'm a traditionalist when it comes to hot chocolate. I believe I did half milk and half dark, while my husband selected some sort of fancy chocolate. The presentation is so cute, with all the chocolate chips served in a sidecar. Giant, steaming mugs of milk are served with a mini whisk for mixing. In a sea of chocolate shops, The Old Chocolate House is charmingly authentic. This is the sort of business that perfectly captures the magic of Bruges.

The best damn hot chocolate ever! Oh my god, sit in the tea room and be blown away. We were so happy this place came recommended by both a blog and your guide. The name may make you think this place is gimmicky but it's anything but. The variety of hot cocoas is impressive. It's worth the wait for the tea room. You get a huge bowl of fresh hot milk, then put in your cup of chocolate and flavor additions. We did the ginger chili and the honeycomb, lavender and cinnamon. Wow. I wish I could have been a repeat offender here! Worth every penny!

Omg omg can't describe the hot chocolate...the best hot chocolate ever. I mixed the milk & dark. They got my order pretty quickly. You get to add chocolate to the milk yourself & mix it. The taste was amazing & rich. Couldn't get over the taste.... had to get some more from the shop to take em home :D I would highly recommend this place. -1 star - cos it compulsory to order 1 order person. Even if you aren't hungry. You can't share & You need a minimum 15€ purchase to use credit card, which is a bit of stretch in a world where most people use plastic. Most places have a reasonable 10€ min CC purchase.

While in Brugge you must try the hot chocolate. It is unbelievably good. I even bought two bags of the bulk dark chips to bring home. Now I can enjoy the taste of Belgium hot chocolate whenever I want.

Amazing hot chocolate!! Touted as 'the best hot chocolate in the world', but does not disappoint! I hack they make the best chocolate in the world of course they're going to be good it melting it down into a delicious drink. Worth the stop at this cute little stop off the main square in Brugge.

Came here for tea time. Ended up not being traditional tea time like the British do but it was lovely none the less. Go up the stairs to this quiet, old, intimate room. My husband had the hot chocolate which was traditional hot chocolate. Hot milk and you stir in the amount of chocolate you want! We then had the butterscotch and chocolate waffle. Both light breakfasts but sweet so thus filling. Such a cute place to grab a snack while browsing this beautiful city.

Signage at The Old Chocolate House says they have the best hot chocolate & they very well might have "one of" the best We ordered 2 for takeaway & the drink was small but mighty Not really as thick as a drinking chocolate, this was still very creamy and milk-chocolaty. Only downer was that we hadn't ordered 2 each! Overall, a drink we would most definitely get again if in the area - huge fans!

It was a cold and rainy day, I felt hungry after a long walk in Bruges. My girlfriend was bothering (as always) telling me that she was hungry! Suddenly, I found this cozy place in a small old house of the fifteenth century. Upon entering you can smell the cocoa, the same that the Aztecs cultivated more than 500 years ago and then was brought to the European continent. When I went up to the second floor of the old house, I asked for a hot chocolate with vanilla ice cream so that my girlfriend could get some energy. Suddenly, at the end of the corridor I read a phrase that marked for the rest of my days my understanding of what chocolate really is: "chocolate does not ask silly questions, chocolate understands". This is by far the most delicious hot chocolate I have ever tried!

Absolutely adored this place on our visit to Brugge. It was a cold rainy day and it was the perfect little stop for us to warm up. The hot chocolate is AMAZING. The chocolate is so good. You order the kind of chocolate you want and then you sir it in hot milk. It is a must have in Brugge, it's incredible. They have other snacks like waffles, brownies, and ice cream available. When we checked out, we saw you could take home the cup with chocolate and a stirrer. The cutest gift to bring back home with us!

The butterscotch sauce particularly stood out here. Had some bananas, strawberries, chocolate and whipped cream as well. It was a great combo if you want to sit down and enjoy a waffle with the fixings on the side.

Note: the cups are huge so order carefully. I rated it a 4 for food as most of the flavors were awesome but my sister had a Spicy Mango and it was not as good as we expected. I would rate service as 3 as the waiter was not very helpful when we asked for suggestions. We get the pleasure of pouring the chocolate in the milk (you'll see what I mean later). It was an excellent experience to taste Belgian chocolate in a different way. I would suggest to visit especially if you are visiting with kids. It is priced also nominally.

I'm so glad we found this place. Amazing hot chocolate, with many options to find a fit for everybody. Tip: The upstairs, where the hot chocolate is served, opens an hour later than the chocolate shop downstairs. Found this out after trying to get some hot chocolate before our morning train out.

Came here for some hot chocolate and a snack. I was not disappointed! The first level is the chocolate store, and if you go upstairs, they have a cozy little tea room where you can sit and relax. I got the dark chocolate mix. It comes as a big mug of steaming hot milk that you then get to whisk chocolate chips into to your taste. The cup that the chips come in is also made of chocolate! They give you a little chocolate bar and a cookie as well. I also tried their basic sugar & butter waffle, which came with this yummy dark syrup. It was simultaneously crispy and soft -- delightful. I think this is a cute place to stop into, especially to warm up on a chilly day.

If you only have a day or even a few hours in Bruges, this is the place to go! Cute shop downstairs with a small, intimate restaurant upstairs. The menu was large without being overwhelming. I had a waffle with banana and chocolate, plus a tiramisu hot chocolate. I was worried I had picked the wrong thing, considering I would probably never be here again. Once it was in front of me, I knew I made the right decision. The waffle was a light and sweet as I had always imagined, and the hot chocolate (with amaretto and espresso IN it) was an added treat that I didn't know I needed. Such a great experience.

They do hot chocolate right. If you know what that means, you must come here. Be prepared for an expansive menu, but in a good way, and with a lot of space in your belly, because if you dine in, the cups are enormous.

Wonderful little spot! Diy hot chocolate chosen from what is nearly a "wine menu" of cocoa beans. Kids cups are slightly smaller than adults hot chocolate, perfect size for our children and they loved creating their own drink. I tried the Aztec which came with cinnamon and chili peppers and it was excellent. The waffles were a hit as well, nice and light but crispy. Tea room is above the chocolate shop, restroom available for guests, and you pay for your tea experience down in the shop so it's easy to throw in a few extra chocolates

Yelp told me I had to come here, so I did. Place is small but they get you in and out quick. The menu has a very good selection of different types of drinks, hot chocolate being the majority. You have choices of different types of chocolate, add ins such as marshmallow, caramel, nuts etc. You are served with a big cup of hot milk where you stir in your add ins, I'm basic so I stuck with a dark chocolate milk which wasn't over powering. They also have yummy waffles and a few other desserts.

Oh my gosh this was so heavenly. We were told to go here and so glad we did. I had a caramel and vanilla green tea and the biggest waffle with cream. Really nice staff and reasonable price too. Expecting it too be very busy but we were the first ones there.

This was one of our favorite places that we went to in Bruges. We came in for hot chocolate and waffles and we weren't disappointed in the least bit. The hot chocolate comes out as hot milk with chocolate chips in a chocolate bowl on the side. You get to add the chocolate to your desired strength or just eat it as your please. They also give you tiny chocolate pralines and a tiny chocolate cupcake and it's a meal in itself (the mug is the size of a cereal bowl). It was seriously the best hot chocolate I've ever had in my life and the waffle was amazing as well (we would have held off getting that if we knew the hot chocolate was so big!). They also have a really nice chocolate shop within the store, so it's a great place to stop in!

After reading the positive Yelp reviews, I came to the Old Chocolate House on a waffle mission. Unfortunately, I left feeling a little underwhelmed. When you step in the door of the Old Chocolate House, you'll see a traditional chocolate shop on the main level. To the right are stairs leading to a tearoom where you can sit and order food and drinks. I'd already been to the Proeverie that morning for the same kind of mix-your-own-hot chocolate offered by The Old Chocolate House, so I decided on espresso and waffles. The espresso came out right away. It was wonderful and served alongside three little chocolates - what a nice touch! I'd ordered the waffle with chocolate sauce (the same one already pictured on this page) and couldn't wait for it to arrive. I'd been expecting a thick, traditional Belgian waffle with a sugary crunch and yeasty dough. This waffle was quite different. It was extraordinarily large and took up nearly an entire plate, but was very thin and pliable. The waffle itself was covered in powdered sugar and served alongside a small container of chocolate sauce meant to be drizzled to your own liking. I poured on the chocolate and dug in. The texture of the waffle was chewy, soft, and a little rubbery - far from the thick, crunchy treat I'd been hoping for. I couldn't really discern any notable taste to the waffle other than powdered sugar and chocolate. It just tasted very bland compared to some of the excellent waffles I'd had elsewhere in Bruges. After a few bites, I lost interest. I finished my espresso, paid my (expensive!!) bill, and left a mostly-untouched waffle on my plate. So, this might not be the place for waffles. I'm sure the hot chocolate was excellent - and my espresso was certainly terrific - but I was sorely disappointed with that waffle. My advice: stick to the chocolate.

This is the place to go! Off the main squares and just amazing! So many choices for hot chocolate and waffles, such a fun experience, and everything was delicious! The people were nice, and you can do your chocolate shopping downstairs. Yelp reviews did not disappoint on this one! It was the Belgium breakfast we were hoping for... probably the best breakfast we've ever had.
