A beautiful building in a superb location. Other reviews have hinted that the building needs a spruce up, but each to their own. I tend to disagree. I've been in hotels or pubs before that retain the historic exterior, but are stripped, shiny and modern inside. We weren't looking for that and we were enamoured by the determination to give guests an authentic stay in decor and furnishings of a period that's rapidly being swept away. The walk from our room was always interesting, the tiny and ancient lift made us smile and we loved discovering the layout and features of the building and its rooms. The Christmas decorations were absolutely wonderful too. Our room was lovely, the bed supremely comfortable and by then we'd been greeted by as friendly a receptionist as any business could wish for. We'll probably never get the chance to stay here again, but this was a real treat for us and we made some special memories.

Great old, historical hotel, in the perfect location. Our room had views over the park gardens too. Staff are friendly & hard working. Great breakfast in the mornings. Perfect for the opera house if you're visiting for a show or just exploring the peaks. Some parking available- £6 for 24 hrs, obtain ticket from hotel. We'll definitely be back, many thanks !

Historic building near the park & opera house. An aged building like this has charm & character, a bit tired in places, but I liked it. Don't expect anonymous corporate sparkle & shine. Staff working extremely hard & all friendly & willing to help. Downstairs had a bit of a doggy smell but the first floor where we stayed was fine. Apparently, dogs are allowed with a surcharge so maybe worth requesting a non-dog room. Top buffet breakfast with hot & cold choices in a fresh & airy room. Cloth table cloths & serviettes a nice touch. Our room had high ceilings filled with proper old fashioned furniture. 2 comfy chairs & a coffee table to look out over the park which was coppery orange with the Autumn leaves. The windows opened-hooray! Parking permits available at reception for £6 per 24 hours to be used in the locale of the hotel. 5-10 min walk (depending on the individual) up a steep hill to the market square. I would definitely stay again.

Have just stayed at the old hall for one night as attending an event at the opera house. The hotel is a very old building so creaky stairs etc are to expected and it has to be said has a certain amount of charm. However our bedroom was certainly in need or a refurb. Very old furniture and a very sloped floor made it awkward to walk around . The Lino on the bathroom floor was also peeling away. The room temperature was way too warm. The restaurant had a bright fresh decor and the our evening dinner was very nice. I had however pre booked the pre theatre menu at .£17.95 per head but we were told this was no longer available. Apparently it is bar snacks until 5pm then the full al a carte menu. The room was also cold as no heating was on. The breakfast was ok but food items needed to be hotter and replenished more promptly. I cannot fault the staff who were all very pleasant and efficient. I would stay here again but improvements are needed.

Great old hotel. The corridors upstairs have creaking floorboards and uneven door lintels and floors - excellent, just what you'd expect from such an old historic building - adds to the character! Breakfast was lovely, super hot and cold buffet - lovely sausages! All the staff (we encountered 4 during our overnight stay) were very friendly and helpful. Lakes and gardens to walk through are directly opposite the hotel. Would definitely stay again.

I love this place! I have stayed four times this year - I just drive a few miles from my home town as a treat to myself. The history is second to none and this is why I stay. Yes, the floors are sloping, yes it could do with a refresh in parts, but it's a building that started its life in the 16th century so don't go expecting it to be something it's not. I was lucky enough to finally stay in Mary's Bower last night and it was perfect! I've always enjoyed the breakfasts but never stayed for dinner so can't comment on the food offering. Go with an open mind, and enjoy the history. If history isn't your thing, choose somewhere else.

We had a great time! This is a gem of a place, yes it's a little tired but it's also unique and homely. I love the original wonky staircase, what a treat to still have that. The place is filled with history and I just hope that when parts are updated that it's done so sympathetically and in line with the incredible history of this place. There are other hotels you can pick that will look like every other corporate hotel, this one is different.||Lunch in the bar was delicious, everything was fresh and wish I could have eaten more. Breakfast was self service but again it was fresh with food being added whilst we were there and the restaurant was lovely. ||There is a beautiful lounge at the front of the hotel where you can have a drink and relax, this was decorated beautifully for Christmas.||The bar was sadly empty when we called in for a drink before going to bed. I think the hotel need to do more to keep residents spending money in the actual hotel such as giving people a reason to come back for a drink before bed. I could have used a snack but there was nothing available...you need a prosecco and cake deal for those evening hunger pangs!||You can park right outside and get a £6 parking permit for 24 hours from the hotel reception.

Unfortunately the hotel did not meet our expectations.Definetly it did not look like on the pictures. Upon arriving the hall and reception looks so tired and claustrophobic. We have been offered a room with a window facing wall. I went to reception and ask to change a room . The lady Victoria was very nice and offered us a nicer room with nice views. Big complements to her . The room was ok . The location is great as it is in town facing a pavilion garden. The breakfast was good. The evening meal was very average. The bar looks so small and I think it is no window we didn't want to stay there. Overall the hotel looks very tried and needs lots of refurbishment. Unfortunately I will not go back.

Yelp
The menu is fairly standard pub grub and the portions are copious. I had the salmon which came just slightly undercooked in a lovely cream sauce within smashed potatoes and veg. The service is attentive and it's a nice spot for a meal.

Yelp
I really, really liked this hotel. It's very conveniently located, has lots of parking, and a friendly staff. Mostly though I liked the room. We stayed in the UK for two weeks and visited about 10 hotels and this was the only one where we had a really good sized room. It was huge. We felt like royalty staying there. Beautiful. The only thing to be aware of is they lock the doors at night and if you lose your entry code and can't figure out how to make an international call on a US cellphone, you will have to wait for other guests who are out partying late to open the door for you. Don't ask how I know all of that. :-) Wonderful hotel. Definitely one of the best of our trip.

Yelp
Poor value for money. The room we booked was described as a 'classic double' room (i.e better than a standard room), it was disappointing to find two single beds pushed together (so you fall through the gap in the middle of the night), the decor was dated and tatty, carpet pulling up at the edges etc, there were marks on the bathroom wall, no bath (yet bath salts and instructions on how to use the non-existent bath were provided...) and, annoyingly, no simple and expected items such as a 'do not disturb' sign - definitely not what you would expect for £170+ a night. However, the poor room quality was nothing compared with the quality of how staff treat guests.... we were very upset to find that the cleaning staff had rifled through our private items and false accusations were made. The staff tried to impose a fine for smoking in the room, which is fair enough and something we would happily pay for if a deep clean would be required (which it was not - a few puffs of a cigarette when on the toilet). False accusations were made - accusing us of smoking 'substances' and the reason for the charge, was apparently due to complaints from other guests. When discussing this with the manager, and trying to pay the fine, the manager denied that cleaning staff had gone through our items (which they would have had to have done, to find smoking paraphernalia wrapped in a wad of cash left on the side) and was unable to give details of any complaints from other guests. This hotel is proof that nothing is safe even in a supposedly respectable hotel - spend your money wisely, there are plenty of lovely hotels in Buxton - go elsewhere.
