The Old Pearler - Atlas Obscura

"The Old Pearler restaurant is a striking example of architectural innovation. The entire building is constructed from a unique material: coquina. This material is formed from millions of tiny mollusks, specifically Cardiid cockles, also known as Hamelin Cockle Shells (fragum erugatum), which have accumulated over an estimated 4,000 years in the waters at Hamelin Pool and L'Haridon Bight. These shells have naturally cemented together to create coquina, a soft rock used in the construction of various Denham buildings, including The Old Pearler, which was erected in 1974. Visitors to The Old Pearler are greeted by an interior adorned with these natural shells. The shells not only contribute to the restaurant's aesthetic appeal but also underscore its connection to the region's rich marine environment.  The Old Pearler offers a dining experience that celebrates the flavors of Shark Bay. The menu prominently features fresh seafood, including specialties sourced from the waters surrounding Denham. Diners can enjoy dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. The Old Pearler is a unique and distinctive restaurant along Western Australia's Coral Coast, made special due to the shells which give it architectural and ecological significance." - Atlas Obscura

Finally a restaurant that lives up to the reviews!! We went for dinner last night with our toddler and the service was amazing, the atmosphere great, such a beautiful building!! The food…. DELICIOUS 😋!! We started with the seafood chowder and that was one of the best I’ve had. Our toddler got the chicken and chips off the kids meal, he normally won’t eat anything that’s not a nugget but he enjoyed his pan fried chicken. For mains hubby got the steak and mushrooms and cooked to perfection tender and delicious. I got the lobster 🦞 mornay was also delicious, bit much for me after the chowder so hubby smashed back what I couldn’t 😂 if your visiting the area u need come for dinner!! Make sure u book in as it’s a small limited space restaurant.

Quaint little restaurant with AMAZING food!! The seafood chowder had to be the best I have ever had! The seafood in it was so succulent unlike most chowders where the seafood is rubbery and cooked to death. The crayfish mornay was also cooked to perfection. Our server was excellent … and so personable as she entertained us with the history of the restaurant. This is THE restaurant to check out if you’re in Denham!

What a great little gem of a place!!, Aleisha was very welcoming and attentive. We had the catch of the day which was the Rankin Cod and it was the best fish we’ve eaten for a long time. Would definitely recommend this place, so good we went two nights in a row, 10/10

This is Quality, cooked with a heart, served with charm. It is a must if you stay in Denham. Reservation is mandatory and you won't regret it. If yo fly to Australia you have to eat here.

This isn’t a fast food restaurant, nothing about The Old Pearler dining experience says get “em in and get em out” so bring your conversation or perhaps a board game. Our first night in Denham was our wedding anniversary and this restaurant was a great choice to celebrate, small, intimate even romantic, it even reminds couples of one of the most important traits of relationships and that is patience. We booked for 6.30 pm and our beautiful seafood platter was delivered at 8pm, it was worth the wait. Not a battered, deep fried or crumbed piece of seafood insight and no chips. The chef presented the fillets of whiting and Rankin Cod simply to highlight their natural flavours, the prawns were in a light garlic butter and the calamari in a mild chili sauce. The stars of the platter were the large oysters, we chose natural and Kilpatrick, Yum, and the crayfish was likewise. The size of the platter was sufficient for both of us and we even took some leftover back to our motorhome for the following day. Also liked that they were BYO, there is a liquor store on the opposite street corner. The wait person was delightful and kept us updated on the progress of our platter. Seperate courses and meals may have been a faster option check when you book if that is a concern.

The service was spectacular and the lady in the front was quick, friendly and very efficient the chef and her work so well together as a team as they are the only ones running it and definitely work well as a team Thanks again

I love that all the seafood was from the local fish factory. The meal was fresh, tasty and filling. The service was friendly and helpful. We will certainly go back here.
