The Old Pearler - Atlas Obscura

"The Old Pearler restaurant is a striking example of architectural innovation. The entire building is constructed from a unique material: coquina. This material is formed from millions of tiny mollusks, specifically Cardiid cockles, also known as Hamelin Cockle Shells (fragum erugatum), which have accumulated over an estimated 4,000 years in the waters at Hamelin Pool and L'Haridon Bight. These shells have naturally cemented together to create coquina, a soft rock used in the construction of various Denham buildings, including The Old Pearler, which was erected in 1974. Visitors to The Old Pearler are greeted by an interior adorned with these natural shells. The shells not only contribute to the restaurant's aesthetic appeal but also underscore its connection to the region's rich marine environment.  The Old Pearler offers a dining experience that celebrates the flavors of Shark Bay. The menu prominently features fresh seafood, including specialties sourced from the waters surrounding Denham. Diners can enjoy dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. The Old Pearler is a unique and distinctive restaurant along Western Australia's Coral Coast, made special due to the shells which give it architectural and ecological significance." - Atlas Obscura

Absolutely beautiful little restaurant here in the bay. Always a great feed and the atmosphere is just delightful. Make sure you book in! I had the crayfish this time and was the best crayfish mornay I have ever had! Fish of the day, doesn’t get any fresher!

Great service, great meal. Good value also, definitely enjoyed the smaller restaurant with limited tables as the food came out incredibly fast. The building itself is incredible to look at also

I love that all the seafood was from the local fish factory. The meal was fresh, tasty and filling. The service was friendly and helpful. We will certainly go back here.

This isn’t a fast food restaurant, nothing about The Old Pearler dining experience says get “em in and get em out” so bring your conversation or perhaps a board game. Our first night in Denham was our wedding anniversary and this restaurant was a great choice to celebrate, small, intimate even romantic, it even reminds couples of one of the most important traits of relationships and that is patience. We booked for 6.30 pm and our beautiful seafood platter was delivered at 8pm, it was worth the wait. Not a battered, deep fried or crumbed piece of seafood insight and no chips. The chef presented the fillets of whiting and Rankin Cod simply to highlight their natural flavours, the prawns were in a light garlic butter and the calamari in a mild chili sauce. The stars of the platter were the large oysters, we chose natural and Kilpatrick, Yum, and the crayfish was likewise. The size of the platter was sufficient for both of us and we even took some leftover back to our motorhome for the following day. Also liked that they were BYO, there is a liquor store on the opposite street corner. The wait person was delightful and kept us updated on the progress of our platter. Seperate courses and meals may have been a faster option check when you book if that is a concern.

We went there on Sunday night we had starter's and mains would of loved to have had desert it sounded and looked amazing but we couldn't fit it in,I had seafood chowder and hubby prawn cocktail the seafood was so tender and melted in the mouth,Main was a seafood platter and chilli calamari and rice wow again so tender and so much flavour. The service was spectacular and the lady in the front was quick, friendly and very efficient the chef and her work so well together as a team as they are the only ones running it and definitely work well as a team Thanks again

Went to this cute intimate restaurant last night. All of the bricks are made completely from shells .We had to prebook as they get to their booked out this time of year . Denham was extremely busy as it’s fishing season I was told. There was only the chef and one lady front of house and they worked their socks off. They were fantastic they kept a well ordered restaurant with every customer being looked after and nothing was too much trouble. No one was left waiting and everyone seemed to love the food and service. We had the seafood chowder ! Wow ! So tasty and even though we had the small serve it was very filling a full of seafood! Then I had catch of the day which was grilled to perfection and my husband had crayfish mornay which was to die for! We couldn’t fit in dessert ! It was also BYO Thanks for a lovely meal with great service !

Amazing seafood platter for one (the squid especially - wow!) and the catch of the day was brilliant also, all big portions. Great steak and other meat or vegetarian options available too. Service was excellent and the food came quickly. Be sure to book in advance, it's a quaint restaurant. BYOB.Thank you! :)

This is a must do when in Denham. Definitely book ahead as it’s a very popular, small, intimate restaurant. Food & Service was excellent. This was our second time in 4 years and great to see the quality and standards are still high. Excellent and well priced selection across entree’s and mains and its byo. 👍👍
