The Old Well Inn

This is an old english pub by the looks of it. It had a wide range of drinks on offer, from the well stocked beers at the bar, to the well stocked spirits behind. It was quiet on the afternoon that I called in, only a handful of people, which was surprise as some of the ales were only £2.70 a pint. Meals are served here and live music on occasions.

A very warm welcome at this very traditional pub. The Old Well offers a great range of Cask Ales, and Original Budweiser at £3 a pint, what’s not to like. Sky Sports on multiple screens, and best of all, Very Dog Friendly….. A local of ours, for many reasons

All of the issues are with the accommodation. The bar, food, staff were all good. And location is good. |But the room was nothing like the pictures. It was dirty, shabby, the four poster bed had been hacked to remove the four posts leaving a bed that creaked with every move. The carpet was filthy. There were cobwebs everywhere. But the worst part was that not once in three nights was the room serviced. No clean dry towels, bed made up, cups cleaned, bins emptied etc. We were just abandoned. Eventually I had to go and ask for dry towels and it took three attempts at the bar before they handed me a couple. Not enquiring about why or how our stay was.

The property is in an ideal location for the centre of town. There is free street parking at the front. It’s a pub so on arrival it was busy and you checked in at the bar. Which was fine.The proprietor was a bit abrupt when we checked in. Was more interested in charging me extra for our dog. Albeit I had already paid online. We were led to the bottom of the stairs and handed a key and told your room is up there.|The room was large and spacious but in much need of refurbishment. The furnishings are old and dated. The bed was one of those that creaked with the slightest movement.The bathroom was let’s say ‘grotty’|The rooms smelled of fried food. It was above the kitchens and I can only presume the kitchen extractor must vent somewhere outside bedroom window . The smell was awful. There was tea and coffee making facilities in the room but no milk. We enquired at the bar for some and was giving a 1/2 pint glass full. ||The food in the bar is very nice. The breakfast was nice but we were given the only option of 08.00 sitting. This suited us as the sooner we could leave the better.||Would I return. Definetly not

Wow, hard to put down on a review. We stayed one night and from the off wished we could have gone else where. Entrance hall dated and shabby. Bedroom No 1 a disgrace. Number hanging off door, cobwebs all over room. Carpet looked grubby. Decor dated. Mattress on bed seemed to have lost it's spring years ago. Pillows had no filling. A pervasive smell of damp. The bathroom was disgusting. The toilet was loose, the toilet seat hanging off, the electric towel radiator was rusted and should not pass a safety check. The shower head came up ro chest level and the holder broken. The boarding around the pipes was ganging off and broken and the toilet brush...you would need a chem suit to touch it. Couldn't wait to leave. Breakfast was moderate, told not to be late for our slot 8.30 and it arrived at 9.00. Plenty there on the full English but to be honest not good. We would certainly never go back. I don't think the owners have inspected the rooms for a while, if they had they would get things sorted.

We had nowhere else to stay for one night. It spoilt our weekend. I can definitely say this was absolutely shocking, rooms definitely in need of deep cleaning, bathroom disgusting, panels under sink hanging off, toilet seat off, wall mould. No sign of cleaning products used. Bedroom floor felt like a hole under the carpet. Don't know how this has passed any Health and safety regulations.

I'm not really sure how to leave this review. We stayed for 1 night in a first floor room. Photos were taken and to say this was the dirtiest room and hall I have ever seen would be an understatement The bathroom was disgusting and our friends in another room didn't shower it was thst bad. There were hairs in rhe shower. Rust on the walls. The beds were 2 x single slay beds. Where the blood rushed to your head as the head was lower than the foot which is due to floor levels. The levels aren't their fault but do something. It was disgusting and if you have anything about you , don't book As a result we cancelled our evening meal and didn't go to breakfast as there is no way these have standards. As we arrived in the pub it's a pub and looked ok. It was grotty but the reviews on here must be bullshit as they are not honest. The owners need to stay in their own rooms or listen to customers. We didn't ask for money back just left. Shocking in the worst way possible. It was like a room from the 1960's which was last cleaned in the 1960s. On a positive note the mattress was comfortable and clean and so were the sheets. But everything else was disgusting. I wouldn't stay here even in prep for my own funeral.

I ate at the Old Well Inn whilst staying in Barnard Castle. I came with my well behaved dog and was made to feel really welcome. The food was great and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. Can highly recommend the atmosphere and the food.

Nice little pub with a garden that backs out onto the castle wall. We had a a few drinks in a sheltered area from the rain. They have very good covid measures in place - one way system, online ordering to your table and hand sanitiser available. .

Having not seen some friends for sometime we decided to meet in this pub/hotel. We sat in the front lounge, which is kind of small but there is some space. The bar was unmanned but a simple ring of a bell & someone came to serve from the main bar quickly, on occasion during the evening whilst collecting glasses the staff would take our drinks order & bring them to the table which was a nice touch. No food on this occasion. Was a bank holiday wknd & found seat easily for 4 bit wasn't empty.

The old well is a hotel / pub and restaurant We have used the restaurant on a number of occasions but and it has never had more than one or two other parties of diners in. On our last visit I had a dead fly in my salad and when I complained about it I was told that it was not a dead fly and if I was not happy not to pay for it. I believe in constructed criticism but when I get feedback like this I would rather take my business else where what I now do.

Although the pub promised a good line up of offers, most of the meals seemed to have been defrosted and reheated in the microwave. The salmon arrived undercooked and when complained it was taken away and then returned in same state but obviously having been nuked. The vegetables were not fresh, but again out of a packet, which is a same for such a agricultural part of the world. Overall this pub needs to make more of an effort and as many of the signs in the shops said, buy local!
