I live out of town, but have tried to make it to the Oldham once every year or so, because of the nostalgic feel of the old place and of course it's a lot cheaper than the chain theatres. I won't be back again though, thanks for a fine employee named Paula, who appeared to be either the manager or shift manager.
To start with, it was cold and while standing in line outside for tickets, I sent my 12 year old inside to scope out concession stand prices, so she could get popcorn and drinks while I stayed outside to buy the tickets. She was sent back outside, because she didn't have a parent with her. I thought it was kinda rude, especially considering the weather, but maybe they've had kids try to sneak into movies or something. I let it slide.
Later, while standing in line for popcorn, I noticed the man behind me had a service dog with him. I thought maybe a german shepherd, but my kids say he was too short. I noticed the vest on the dog, labeled "Service Animal". At this point, the lady who sent my daughter outside came up to the man and asked if the dog was a service animal. He said yes. She then told him that if it was really a service animal, then he should have some paperwork to prove it. The man was really offended. He told her that yes he did, but it was illegal for her to make him show it to her. She said he had to. He replied that he would show them to her, but he was going to walk out afterwards and get a refund. He did all of this. - Here's a link to the Americans With Disabilities Act website that states you are not allowed to ask for documentation. https://adata.org/publication/service-animals-booklet - Part V a "Handler's Rights". At this point, I'm pretty amazed that this lady is allowed to have contact with customers.
When I work my way up to the concessions, the man in front receives his drinks and steps to the left, so that I can step up and order (it's the south, people are usually considerate like this) I start to order and he asks for straws, to which the lady says something like "they're in the way, they're over there" pointing to my right, where my kids were standing. My kids & I step back (it's the south, people are usually considerate like this) and the man gets his straws. She proceeds to screw up my order and then be all snippy with me like I was such a hassle. XXL Popcorn, 2 drinks and 2 candies, not a difficult order. And we missed the beginning of the movie. Too bad she wouldn't let my daughter order our food.
Anyway, I won't be traveling back to the nostalgic theatre until I no longer have to worry about Paula being there. She is there to serve her customers, not to try to put everyone in a bad mood when they are paying her salary. I've been there probably 7 or 8 times and have never had anything like this happen before and I can assure you that it won't happen again.
