The hubbs and I have stopped in for dinner a couple times now, and it was just okay for us, a bit hit-or-miss. Not bad, but nothing spectacular either. On our first visit, I had the open meatloaf sandwich with french onion soup. The meatloaf gravy was very much to my liking, that dark-dark-brown, thick-and-gooey, salty gravy, maybe straight from a can, but something I personally enjoy nonetheless. The soup was pretty good too, very cheesy, lots of onions. The hubbs had a stinger sub. It was a good size, but dry, needed more sauce of some sort. A week later, I was craving that gloppy brown gravy, so we went for dinner again, but this time was different. My french onion had far less cheese, and everything was served lukewarm. Meatloaf and soup should always come out piping hot. The tepid temperature definitely tainted my overall enjoyment. The hubbs had wings-and-weck, which was all okay. The roast beef was decent, and the wings just alright, neither particularly meaty. Exceptional weck and wings at a large-menu diner such as Olive Tree is unlikely, which was the case here, so now we know. Plus our second visit had lackluster service. The waitress was nice enough, but never offered more coffee. A diner staple is to come around with coffee, but we didn't get that staple-attentiveness that night. Will we come back to Olive Tree? Yeah, maybe, probably. I like family restaurants such as this one in general, and the high-walled booths do make for safer, somewhat more secluded seating during pandemic times. The big diner menu has a lot to offer, so maybe we just haven't tried the right thing yet. If I go with the meatloaf again, hopefully it doesn't come out cold.
