"The Olsen Considered one of Australia ’s best living painters, John Olsen is famous for his squiggly-lined watercolor and oil takes on the antipodean landscape. Fitting, then, that the second property in the Art Series Hotel Group immerses guests in his playful worldview through museum-quality prints, an in-suite visual library, and tours of the hotel’s works. The 224 elegant accommodations are studies in restraint, with designer furnishings, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and soft white-and-silver color schemes that keep the focus on the intricate paintings; kitchenettes with stoves and crockery give suites the feel of modern artist lofts. Should you wish to explore the South Yarra shopping precinct that surrounds The Olsen as the locals do, a smart car, Kronan scooter, Lekker bicycles, and an artsy pram are available for rent. After a day of retail therapy, head back to the hotel for seasonal small bites (gnocchi with field mushrooms; chargrilled calamari with tomato-chickpea stew)."

The Olsen - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"First impressions? This member of the hugely popular Art Series Hotels group pays homage to Australian painting titan John Olsen, whose distinctive work adorns every available bit of wall space. Lush amenities and an upmarket South Yarra location make it one of the city's most tempting boutique picks. What’s the crowd like? Art aficionados, the fashion set, and travelers who'd rather be positioned away from the thrum of downtown. How was check in? At 224 guest rooms, this is the largest of the Art Series hotels—but well-trained staff prevent bottlenecks from forming in the lobby and restaurant. There's no confusion with "all-in-one" tablets for lights, TV, and A/C, which some travelers may find a relief. Tell us about your room. The champagne and silver palette in the guest rooms is a welcome counterpoint to Olsen's bright and bold work, and the signature Art Series beds are just the right kind of squishy. Not all rooms include bathtubs, so request one when you book. How about the little things, like Wi-Fi? Rooms are well set up for longer stays: kitchenettes come as standard, and the Wi-Fi is strong and free. Room service and food: Worth it? Spoonbill Restaurant & Bar is a cut above most hotel eateries in Melbourne, serving tasty savory plates for breakfast, and a mix of mod-Oz and Mediterranean for lunch and dinner. Spoonbill also takes care of room service, which is available 24/7. Anything stand out about other services and features? Thrill seekers should take a dip in The Olsen's glass-bottomed rooftop pool, which overhangs the street; and the Norbu spa offers infra-red treatments. Bottom line. Aside from being visually enticing, The Olsen is exceedingly comfortable and expertly run, which makes for a stress-free guest experience." - Dan F. Stapleton

From the moment I arrived the team were very helpful. I wasn't able to get into my room straight away as I was to early, but they were very accommodating, giving me a private space to work whilst I waited. The rooms were clean and well presented, and the amenities provided were of great quality. The location was perfect for me, with shops, restaurants, everything nearby. I would recommend staying here, and if I was back in Melbourne, would stay here again.

Unfortunately, it was not the 5 star hotel experience we expected. I will start by saying the customer service on entry and during our stay was great during the interactions we had with the staff at front desk. However, in the room, the curtain was partially off its hooks, there were no bathrobes ready (wasn't mentioned to us when checking in that we needed to ask for them), and unfortunately the mattress was lower in the centre which meant that we would constantly be gravitating to the centre of the big bed. Woke up with back pain. The bathroom had water leaking once the shower was turned on as well. The room wasn't visually appealing and I didn't feel the class I expected from a 5 star hotel. The corridors however look rather neat and tidy, and the art pieces on the wall had our attention.

I booked a Deluxe Studio suite. On the QANTAS website it says it comes with a bath- there wasn't one. There was a single seat lounge chair and, not the two-seater as in the pictures. The bathroom basin had a large chunk out of it. There was more, but I think the place is ready for a refurb. This isn't the first room that we have stayed in there over the last couple of months that looks tired. I like staying the Art series hotels, but I'm not certain the additional money for the Olsen is worth it anymore.

Stayed here for a few nights while visiting Melbourne. It’s definitely a great hotel, within walking distance of the city central. The rooms were comfortable and clean, and the hotel including a pool and gym as well as parking, for a small fee. I will say however, the design of the room, or at least the one we stayed in was a bit flawed. The bathroom was not separated by a door or wall but rather an opaque window pane, which made it rather uncomfortable to use while other people were in the room. Basically you had no privacy while using the toilet or shower. While this isn’t that much of an issue if travelling with children or with your partner, it’s not very comfortable for other situations. The bathroom lights were also connected to the main room, so if you switched one on or off you were also doing the same to the other. I did also notice that some of the facilities advertised, such as the spa/jacuzzi, were only available to use if you stayed in the penthouse. False advertising. I also spent a significant amount of time trying to find a website that contained basic information about the hotel or even a contact phone number to reception, but could not find it. Despite that, still an overall positive experience. Thank you for having us:

Google
This was amazing... we had a small problem when we first arrived, and they went above and beyond to care for us because of it. The service was unmatched...I would strongly recommend them to anyone looking for a well priced, convenient and enjoyable experience. I'll definitely go back if I need to in the future.

Our wedding suite. We booked a penthouse room for our wedding. We got ready there the morning of, stayed there the night of, and the rest of the weekend. No request was too difficult for the staff there. We were met with incredible service. We needed extra tables for the stylists, champagne glasses brought up to us, the beds made in the morning prior photos being taken, and all these requests were fulfilled in a timely manner. We were even given sparking wine in the lobby (which I think is a regular experience for guests). Our room was spacious and clean and the location of the hotel is great. We couldn't fault our stay. We will definitely be back. Liv & Mitch.

We came for a catchup with friends and were delighted with the experience. We wish we could've extended for another night. Great location with excellent facilities, really helpful and friendly staff and a room upgrade to top it off. We will definitely come back again soon

This was my second stay at The Olsen in South Yarra. The location is wonderful, with walking distance to great cafes, pubs, shops and the MCG. The beds are very comfortable and the staff are friendly and accommodating. The main areas are thoughtfully curated with artwork and subtle lighting. The only downfall is the bathrooms which are tired and in need of a revamp. They are clean but show wear. The lighting in the bathrooms is unusable for makeup application but the floor length mirrors in the bedrooms have ample light. The windows are desperately in need of a clean with grime and lots of bird droppings which impacts the great view of Chapel St. Overall I would stay here again and recommend to friends due to the location, it is superb and my favourite part of Melbourne.

Yelp
Stay in a Art Series Hotel. Check. Now to collect them all. Like Pokemon. Okay, maybe not Pokemon that would be child-like, but my first experience at an Art Series hotel was so pleasant and without fuss [insert many more adjectives here that sing this hotel's praises] that I'll be sure to complete the set with stays at the Cullen and Blackman post haste. From the ever helpful concierge to the ghost chairs in the room and more, there was not one thing I could fault about my stay here. Even being in a conference on their 9th floor felt more like a holiday (with wrap around city views) than a 'work-thing'. Best of all some of Melbourne's best eats and drinks are mere stone's throw from you. *cough* Two Birds, One Stone *cough*.

Yelp
Buyer BEWARE. The Laundry was broken. The gym was closed. Two out of three elevators were broken. They made wake up calls to rooms that didn't request them. They enter your room unannounced and without apology. Do not expect to use your devices, as The wifi IS HORRIBLE, (blocks the majority of websites from being viewed). The people were nice. Buyer Beware.

Yelp
Two words - just gorgeous! I love it when people carry my luggage for me, so this place was already racking up mad stars before I even got to my room. But when I did get to my room, it was everything you would expect from a artist inspired, super modern boutique hotel. A large supply of T2 tea was also greatly appreciated. A large chamomile tea aided the Perth to Melbourne time difference transition. It was a total pleasure staying here.

Yelp
Awful hotel customer service is so bad. I have a credit card charge when I left for $700 which I didn't authorize then they call and say there is a problem with the stove! Customers be aware they will scam you.

Yelp
I love an upgrade. And I got one when I stayed at the Olsen, being upgraded to the penthouse level, with a nice view over Chapel Street. The room itself was well appointed, with a nice space to relax with some art books and magazines, a small kitchenette and a gorgeous bathroom. The bed though, it was like sleeping on clouds with angels as pillows. It was the best night sleep that I had in years. It took a lot of effort not to roll the bed out of the hotel. Will be back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
A meeting room with two king-size beds in it?? But wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. Ohhh, but these Art Hotels have got it all sorted, let me tell ya. A cracking concept, theming beautiful Melbourne hotels around famous Australian artists. They've put tonnes of thought into every little convenience and aesthetic, which makes for a superlative hotel experience. Have tried the Blackman, now the Olson, and you better believe I'm a-coming for you, Cullen. Except why do I picture this Cullen fella as some sort of ocker vampire? Stupid Twilight. Ruining cultural experiences since 2005. Or whenever it was that Meyer broad foisted her steaming tween bollocks upon an unsuspecting world. Oh yeah, the meeting room. On the 9th floor, with wraparound windows and a king-size bed at either end. Perfect for team building! Or lying there presenting to your colleagues in nothing but a robe and a smile and your hand on your laser pointer. Giggidy.

Yelp
A slick hotel, The Olsen is perfectly positioned if you plan on doing some mad shopping along Chapel Street. Named after the artist, John Olsen, the rooms are modern and well appointed with a fine selection of art coffee table books provided in each room. The bathrooms have huge showers (big enough for two!) and all the usual bathroom-y accoutrements - fluffy towels and the like. The view from the room is hardly inspiring, but fret not - you'll have your very own Olsen hanging on the wall to look at if you need some visual stimulation. The gym isn't really going to rock the socks off the gym junkies out there - it's basic, though the lap pool is lovely. Best you forget the exercising business altogether and instead just drink cocktails in the bar.

Yelp
Comfy beds in a nice, modern, fun place to stay. Staff was very helpful. Spoonbill restaurant was a cool place too - great food. Location is great in Melbourne. Close to parks and running trails along the Yarra River plus shops and restaurants galore just outside the door. Studio room is small. Two bed suite is enormous! Street side (chapel St) has noise. Other side is much quieter although not a pretty view (construction cranes). The staff can pretty much get what you need and are really pleasant to very warm and friendly. No such thing as attitude. Art is a nice theme. It's sophisticated and yet whimsical. Small things here and there (not worth mentioning) keep this from being a 5 star.

Yelp
I chose to stay at The Olsen for business, rather than one of the "high street" hotels, looking for some charm and better quality service. I wasn't disappointed. The customer service team were all very friendly and helpful, offering advice etc. The rooms are well designed, nicely furnished, clean and just what you need for a perfect hotel experience. I only spent one night and wasn't able to explore all the facilities, but if the room was anything to go by, I have every confidence the rest of the hotel would be similar. I did get to try the restaurant for a bite to eat in the evening and breakfast. Great food, great service and great ambience. The Tacos on the entree menu were delicious, so check those out if eating in the evening. The only comment that I would leave is that there was a slight odour coming through the bathroom - you know, once of those drain smells. I couldn't really detect where it was coming from and didn't get time to ask for maintenance to pop up, and it kind of came and went. All up, a nice hotel and definitely worth considering if you want something a little different and more boutique. Oh, and the artwork is great, which is what you would expect from one of the Art Series Hotels. This venue is dedicated to John Olsen.

Yelp
Really nice boutique hotel. The booking was arranged for us as part of our flight package. Rooms are nicely designed and bed is one if most comfortable I've slept in. Positives include decor, location and bed! Negative are that they charge for everything that a good 4-5star provide for free, bottled water in room, wifi, laundry etc this lets the place down and stops it being true luxury

Yelp
Great hotel, spacious room with some nice design features including a small kitchenette with microwave/combo oven and hob. The bed is incredibly comfortable! There's also a small coin-op laundry on each floor ($2 - 2.50 wash, $2 dry for 60mins) I haven't sampled the food as there's so much good stuff available just down the road. The staff are very friendly and there's an excellent selection of craft beers available at the bar. The gym however leaves a lot to be desired for a hotel of this rating, being very small and far from "state of the art". That said, there are a number of actual gyms fairly locally.

Yelp
I was in town for a week on business and had a great stay. I was traveling during the American Super Bowl and Mitch, who helped me with booking my stay, was kind enough to give my colleagues and me access to a conference room with a big screen HDTV. Mitch even had a small gift and sweets delivered to me room. I would definitely stay here again!
