"Donkey Ball Store This is a worthwhile quick stop for anyone who enjoys chocolate or innuendo and is passing through Kainaliu on the west coast of Hawaii Island (around eight miles south of Kailua-Kona, just before Captain Cook). They specialize in donkey balls, which are macadamia nuts covered in thick milk chocolate. Actually, they have a whole menagerie of balls beyond donkey: boar, goat, monkey, dolphin.... Whether you want milk, dark, or white chocolate, coconut flakes or a salty caramel crunch, or just candied mac nuts without the chocolate, there's something for you. It's all made on-site, and the smut doesn't stop with the names: You'll be asked if you "want a sack for your balls," too. Whatever you choose, they'll make a great gift... if they last that long. (If you'd rather save the balls for a special occasion, Rebel Kitchen is just a couple yards away.) By AFAR Traveler , AFAR Contributor"

Terrible… awful tasting chocolate. First off they didn’t actually have any donkey balls. So we purchased Donkey Sea turtles and they were $20 for a 6oz bag. Also purchased dark chocolate & toffee bits. $20 same size bag as well. They both tasted old and just truly lawful couldn’t even eat one! Such a waste of money and way overpriced! Girl behind the counter wasn't helpful either. Don’t waste your time.

This is a second time I have visited this location great gifts are in store, with suggestive theme candy. A must stop location.

Google
Customer service 10/10 Value for money 10/10 Quality of experience 9/10 The main disappointment is the factory (which would have been allowing a tour) is not open. Here you are guaranteed the some of the finest production of local Cacao and Coffee (which is not open too when I visit) Notice because of covid the shop has seriously cut down its man power. Right now it is having a hard time recruiting and reopening. I tested two different types of "balls" with champagne as company, very impressed. The visit to Donkeys Ball will both be tasty and historic. A very enriched experience should the factory was open. The operating manager did her best showing us the history and what would have been like while we checked out.

Mark Smith

Google
We see the chocolate for sale all across the island but like to visit the factory to get it at its source. You can see where they make the chocolate as well as a small store where they carry most varieties + shirts. Good place to visit if you like chocolate!

Rachel Royer Denzer

Google
Chocolate shop that can’t stop and won’t stop! The staff is super friendly and quick to give you a sample of any ball you want. I would recommend the Salty balls or any of their hot sauces. Just brace yourself for every ball joke ever invented 😬

Google
Silliest selection of every kind of chocolate combination, rolled into a sphere. Classic macnut in dark or milk, with salt, coffee, and cocoa dusted varieties. The perfect take-home gift with a sense of humor. Not cheap. $15 for a small sack, but the novelty, great taste, and the authentic artisanal creations are well worth the price. Located in the heart of the Kona coffee growing area, this is a super convenient spot with interesting shops and restaurants. While you're there, be sure to go next door and try the local honey (it's delicious, local, and a bargain)

Google
What an amazing sweet. Handmade, so many different flavors. The lady in the small shop is very friendly, devoted to the products and has nice stories to tell. Be aware that this is the only place to buy the originals! There are many bad copies around. Definitely stop by and get some!

Rebekah Diaz

Google
Went here off the recommendation of our tour guide app. Cute, small store & the staff were super attentive and funny. Making jokes on the whole “donkey balls.” It was great and cute stop!

Yelp
If you like balls and chocolate you gotta check this place out cause it's full of the perfect combination of those two things! I won't spoil the legend of the term "donkey ball" to leave some mystery and also respect the experience of going to the store. They have every variety of chocolate covered macadamias and then variations that are chocolate, caramel, and flavor filled all with appropriate names e.g. chicken balls, goat balls, boar balls etc. We got a variety of all the different types of balls some were sweet, some were salty but they were all delicious. We loved them so much that we are going to order some (I live in OK, so yes they do ship) for our family as Christmas gifts! So even if you can't get to Hawaii hit their website and order some to sample you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Donkey Balls and Wild Ass Coffee. There is a multitude of flavor options for the donkey balls, which are chocolate covered macadamia nuts... set in light and dark chocolates or a combo with flavoring ranging from mint to salt to spicy. Wild ass coffee options are there too. And they have some fun t shirts with their logos on them too. Simple place, a quick stop.

Yelp
CLOSED INDEFINITELY. Drove all the way from Waikoloa as we loved our visit several years ago. Sign on the door that they're closed (until further notice) during what should be business hours. Not noted on their website, yelp, or any other online search.

Yelp
Once upon a time, five years ago, this was the coolest place on the island. The owner was an absolute riot! Merch was to be had for days and the every single sentence the employees uttered had some sort of dirty ball joke attached at the end. Reminded me of the Uranus fudge factory out in Springfield Missouri. Now there was only one employee working, who seemed irritated to be there. The merch was more limited than I remember and they were out of iced coffee at two in the afternoon. Not sure what happened to this place but it was like trying to go back to your old hangouts from when you went to college. What used to be fun now seemed less so and you've got this kind of been there done that feeling.
google avatar

Michel S.

Yelp
The store shows hours of operation and they showed that they were opened. So I drove 2 hours to find out that they are closed. I asked around and the people told me that they are having a hard time locating staff members so the hours are all over the place. If you can't open, modify the hours because you are wasting peoples time and money. The schedule showed that they are open on Sunday and it was not the case.

Yelp
Coffee was meh. I ended up not drinking it and just getting coffee from our hotel. The store is fun. The old man working there was very friendly and funny. The store feels old but it's interesting and in a great location off Ali'i Drive.

Eric S.

Yelp
Tried to shop here twice. First time they were closed and there was a sign with their hours on the door - our bad. Second time we were there during the period they indicated they would be there but the shop was closed up tight. Neighboring shops say they aren't even sure the place is still open - may need to update their status with Google Maps out of consideration.

Yelp
Blue balls ... flaky balls ... salty(???) balls .... hmmm.... nice, round, smooth... It's chocolate Donkey (macadamia nut) covered balls, that's what they are!! It's located in a small shop on the mauka (mountain) side of the road just outside of Kainaliu town. If you're looking for a catchy sounding omiyage (present), consider stopping by here and take a look! Support the small businesses, in this case the original shop that created this catchy item that is guaranteed to elicit a chuckle or laugh from the receiver!

Tammy B.

Yelp
Fun store! Prices are reasonable, for Hawaii. Very funny stuff that just screams take me home!
google avatar

Yelp
Sadly we drove out there (20 mins) to find out it was closed; even the sign said it shld be open. ...Please update your hours or if it's an unforeseen reason, throw an update here.

Yelp
Three words - unfriendly & overrated. Bought one bag of chocolate covered nuts from the short visit. They are very expensive----way too overly priced. We have tasted and tried others, this place is not that special. Don't get me wrong--they do taste pretty good but it's almost $1 each for the green colored chocolate ball. The two shop staff somehow appeared to be very snobby and unfriendly. Not sure what is their donkey problem.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a hip spot with a unique sense of humor. The products are high quality and taste good, but things have changed through the years- which may be a good thing. There is no more "castration room," and several products have been discontinued since new ownership. My friend who has been a regular there for many years was disappointed but still managed to spend a lot of money. She enjoyed connecting with the friendly staff member who had been there since before the changes. Since the global pandemic, they no longer offer samples, but there are plenty of products to choose from. There is a working factory that was closed when we visited due to the holiday. The products are pricey but very good. Those who visited in the past may be a little disappointed with the changes, but the sense of humor is still there with all the balls (macadamia nuts) you could possibly want.

Yelp
It's a great stop and the chocolate. The lady was really sweet helped us with any questions and more!

Yelp
Out of curiosity we stopped at the Original Donkey Ball factory store as we drove through Kealakekua on the way back from Volcanoes National Park. Store was clean, neatly put together and products displayed nicely. I had some questions and talked with a very nice young woman named Sarah. Since it wasn't crowded I felt it was ok to ask all my historical Donkey Ball questions. Sarah was patient and very informative. I learned a lot about history and the differences between the Original Donkey Balls and the "other" brand. We talked for a bit and we left without purchasing anything but felt fulfilled in the information we learned and having met a very nice person. Well, for further understanding we went into Kona to the "other" store. They couldn't be the least I interested in giving any information, just what did I want to buy (we didn't). Left that store thinking wow, what a difference. 2 days later we drove back down to Kealakekua to the Original Donkey Ball store, again Sarah was there. She remembered us, same pleasant person, talked some more donkey ball history. Made our purchases of some different balls. Sarah made all the difference. To the owners of this store, you have a winner there that will make a difference to your brand, your store and your sales.

Yelp
Super fun to stop in here and grab a few balls. The chocolate is very tasty! I also purchased a memento tiki coffee cup to remember how nice the people were in the store. When the cashier (Sarah?? = ugh - vacation brain!) found out we were just poking around the area, she sent us to the Painted Church a few miles down the road. I would never have known about this spot had we not had such a nice conversation! She also recommend a poke place for lunch and it was a hit! We are big fans of supporting small businesses and are very happy we stopped in!

Yelp
This place is rad. I love sweets and did a search on Yelp for local places. This store was about 10 mins away from our resort and it was our first day on the island so we decided to explore. When I mentioned Donkey Balls to my husband he said "Lets go!". The store is small with to areas. One area sells all the Donkey chocolates and the other side is a cafe where you can order drinks. We walked in and decided to check out the goods before grabbing some coffee to go. The store also has a factory where you can see where the chocolates are made. No one was in there but it was fun to look inside. There are various types of Donkey Balls! The names are hilarious. We ended up buying milk chocolate mint donkey balls and peanut butter balls. Yes they are expensive, but a great souvenir! Great little gifts although again quantity is small and pricey. We ordered a coffee to go and there were some samples of donkey balls at the counter. Fun shop. Free street parking. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Cute factory of chocolates with cheeky titles. Lots of dark, white and milk chocolate flavored with layers of coatings including pepper and coconut and powdered sugar. Magnets, shot glasses and coffee sold here too. Coloring books and collectible stuffed animals for the kids as well. Prices are ok- customer service is friendly. You're allowed to try some chocolates.

Yelp
Donkey Balls Factory and Store is a small storefront that sells balls! All types of balls...donkey balls, chicken balls, monkey balls. Delicious chocolate covered balls! The different balls vary in size and flavors. They have items such as chocolate covered strawberries, bananas, toffee, peanuts, and even chocolate! They really have anything for just about anyone. Their names are really fun as well! They are very funny and catchy, especially for dudes. There's blue balls, salty balls, toasted balls, and oops my nuts are showing. I thought that this place was going to be a large factory where you could see the chocolate being made, but instead it was just a couple windows into a small kitchen area. Nothing spectacular and no one was making any chocolate! The parking can be a little tight because it is only street parking. If you are coming in from Kona the store will be on the left side, so it would be safer to turn around and park on that side. There's a lot of traffic. Pricing is high and the contents are small. I wanted to purchase a whole bunch, but it was expensive. I wish that they had mini sizes so that you could buy for individual people. I just got a few to share with friends.

Yelp
My friends husband took her to The Big Island and she asked me what's good there. I told her Donkey Balls, Kona Coffee or the spa with no walls @ the Four Seasons. There's nothing material to buy there. She said no wonder her husband tricked her by picking the island. She wanted to get a new Louis Vutton purse or designer sunglasses... Anyhow they spotted The Donkey Balls on their drive to the volcano and she tried the samples and agreed they were good and bought a whole bunch including one for me. I'm sad to say all my Donkey Balls are gone but it is such a cute and yummy store. They carry BIG BALLS, Blue Balls and Dingleberry, and other cute novelty items...

Claudine F.

Yelp
STOP - closed on Mondays! We love this store and come every year when we're on the Big Island. This year, however, we were so disappointed when, after having driven all the way down to this location, we discovered it's closed on Mondays. Despite the hours in Yelp saying it's open daily. When it is open, there's a great selection and friendly staff. Hopefully, they'll update the hours online before our next trip. So sad to miss this year :(
google avatar

Ron A.

Yelp
We got four different types of donkey balls, Peppermint, coconut, Hawaiian chili, and papaya. Papaya and coconut are bland and have no flavor of what is listed. Peppermint very good. Hawaiian chili the heat comes at the end. Overall not bad but I feel they are over priced for what you get
google avatar

D B.

Yelp
Products are good.... The kids had more expectations than just a store selling candy. Thought there would be more historical or tour component to it. Still, good to visit once if you're curious about macadamia nut and chocolate combinations in different flavors.
google avatar

Christine D.

Yelp
As my husband and I were driving through Kealakekua I saw a giant sign that said Donkey Balls and just laughed at him and said do you want some Donkey Balls? What a clever name once you see what type of items they sell. Anyway, we did actually stop by after reading online that Donkey Balls was known for their chocolate in Kona. They sell a number of different Hawaiian specialities as well Kona coffee, chocolate covered macadamias and other nut free chocolates. You can watch them make the chocolate here through a window in the store. They are also very clever with the naming of their items so it'll sure keep you entertained reading blue balls, salty balls, flakey balls etc... It is a little pricey in my opinion but the packaging is really cute and they sell items here you don't normally find at the other gift shops down in Kailua unless you're going to the Donkey Ball location there. The employees are very friendly and they offer samples of their sweet treats at this location. They also make fresh brewed coffee beverages here as well. It's just a fun shop to drop by if you happen to be in the town. There are several restaurants and cute antique shops in the area too. Parking shouldn't be that much of a problem even though it's street parking, there were plenty of spaces there when we went. Definitely stop by if you're looking for some Kona specialty gifts to bring home. They even ship their chocolates anywhere in the US!

Yelp
2yrs pass by never thought buy chocolate here but today I did . Actually really good there are lots flavor and delicate cacao taste still there . Now on I will buy chocolates from Donky here way , much more , great cacao flavor ! Great to buy for gift from hawaii much better than those Hawaiian macadamia nuts chocolate ! You should go taste first .
google avatar

Marissa N.

Yelp
Oh the myriad of ball jokes that you hear and the staff go to town with. The balls are good and they'll let you sample them if you ask for a particular type. I'm not sure how the price varies compared to the more commercially covered covered nuts but you can see them being made right on the spot.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Such a fun little spot. Lots of potty humor, but great candy, friendly staff, and good coffee. We loved the Chicken Butter Balls and the Blueberry Cheesecake Balls. Also, their coffee was exceptional. Worth a stop.
google avatar

Amie B.

Yelp
Driving along the road, we see "Donkey Balls" and had to stop. My curiosity always gets me. The only parking available is street parking but this is a very small town and finding parking is not an issue. This is a candy and factory store, which sells all sorts of chocolate covered malt balls and macadamia nuts along with kona coffees. It was amusing looking at the varying items. If you go up to the counter where the register is at, you can taste test a few of their goodies. We ended up purchasing some Mango Malted Monkey Balls, pineapple malted monkey balls, dark chocolate crusty boar balls with toffee, and dark n white chocolate covered 100% kona Peaberry coffee beans aka Gourmet Kona Gogo Beans. It was fun perusing through everything. While you're here, drive further down the road to get to Greenwell Coffee Farm.
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
Simple and Sweet A small store selling a bunch of different balls, these make for great gifts and a great laugh! All balls are different sizes with different fillings (caramel, nuts, etc), sure to please anyone's palette! All jokes aside, these actually taste amazing! When you visit you can see through a glass pane of the people making these snacks in small batches. The owner was nice enough to describe in detail everything that was happening. If you pass this place, give it a shot as you will enjoy your snack plus you'll be helping a mom and pop shop! The prices are quite steep but it's pretty worth the quality. I highly recommend any of the ones with the macadamia nuts. They also ship anywhere across the US so order up! Balls Balls Balls

Athena G.

Yelp
Great experiance! The store was very clean and the staff was helpful and friendly. We were able to sample any type of chocolate we desired and walked away with more

Jesse J.

Yelp
Not bad prices and the chocolate was great! Went to the original store, which was a little out of the way, but still worth the drive.
google avatar

Traci L.

Yelp
Too cute. Quite the schtick they have going here but definitely worth the visit just for the fun gifts you can bring home to friends. Friendly staff and fun place to visit. And the Balls were delicious and not at all schweaty!!
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Loved stopping in these shops while we were in Kona. Not only are the labels entertaining but the chocolate is really really good. One of our favorites were the Salty Balls and we also found some spicy Hawaiian salt seasoning that is AMAZING here. If you're lucky you'll get to see them actually making some of their products while you shop. We were lucky enough to see Blue balls from start to finish and they even let us sample them fresh from the tumbler. We had an awesome time!
google avatar

Wendy N.

Yelp
These folks work to create this fun treat made only in Hawaii with lots of love and labor by hand!!! Great for gifting to friends and loved ones. A favored small shop by many! Who wouldn't love a gift called Donkey balls, chicken balls, monkey balls or goat balls, lol?!
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
This was a great store to stop by and see while we were visiting. They have chocolate for any and everyone. They also provide samples of different chocolates. Very friendly staff, don't buy anywhere else unless you want to spend more! They also have great blended drinks and baked goodies available for purchase, wish I bought more go-go beans to bring home with me. Next time I will plan to bring more home!
google avatar

Cassandra Y.

Yelp
It is a very fun shop to check it out. All the chocolate have very unique names. Love it when they call the chocolate "balls"~ It is so entertaining when we read every package because lots of humor coming from the owner! They give out sample to taste too.
google avatar

michelle m.

Yelp
Great product, terrible service and sales. Went in with my son and got a typical cold shoulder.."we are tired of all you tourists" attitude. No one asked if we wanted to try any samples, couldn't be bothered while stocking the shelves. Ended up buying a sticker after waiting for someone to come out from the back..
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
Fun place to visit! A must stop if you like a fun local place to get some unique treats. The puns from the employees is hilarious. The employees seem to really enjoy their job. They are extremely friendly and outgoing. The balls are delicious. Must try the blue balls. They give you samples of any. They have coffee too. The coffee is kona coffee and is very good. More then anything the store is a fun place to visit. The employees will make you laugh when they talk to you about their balls. They always are using puns with anything they offer. They have a nice selection of funny T-shirt's and many other items. We got a coffee mug and a few T-shirt's to take. Well worth stopping in.
google avatar

Frederick P.

Yelp
Do I need to say anything? The marketing was good . They gave samples to everyone. The peanut butter ones were the best. It is basically all types of Macadamia nuts covered by different flavors. They had a banana flavored covered Macadamia nuts. The Macadamia nuts were huge. They had mesquite smoked Macadamia nuts. You can order on line. They were all unique and very good. See the pictures.
google avatar

Noelle K.

Yelp
This is a fun place to get souvenirs and/or treats. They have yummy chocolates in all sorts of flavors with fun cheeky names. They also have coffee, honey and small toys, etc. the staff are nice and helpful. They will give samples if you ask.
google avatar

Tammy P.

Yelp
Had to stop for a place called Donkey Balls. It is just a little south of Kona heading south. They have a big selection of chocolates called Donkey Balls (Mac nuts covered on chocolate) and Monkey Balls (we tried mango flavored malted balls). Great candies but they really are large and a bit tough to bite into. So many great flavored so will probably order more. If you are in the area stop by. They also offer coffee.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
We heard such great things so we had to stop by for a taste. Initially the customer service was underwhelming but we grabbed a bag anyway. I intended on bringing several bags back to share with friends and family but the fact that the chocolate they use isn't even made in Hawaii is kind of a deal breaker. Although they were tasty, the remaining half of the bag melted together to form a chocolate puddle in the heat of Hawaii. We knew that bringing these back wasn't going to be possible since it's hot every day and the location is far enough from the airport to guarantee they won't make it. Oh well, at least we got to enjoy them!
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
Really expensive chocolates with crass names. The names are funny, like bile balls, but the candies are really expensive. Maybe a good gift for a teen boy.

Mary M.

Yelp
Excellent chocolate. Some of the highest quality chocolate I've ever had. I went in for chocolate covered coffee beans and came out with a three month supply of confections!! Blue balls. Fresh balls. Peeper-mint balls. And chocolate gogo beans. The ones I originally came for!! Life is Beautiful!!
google avatar

Linda P.

Yelp
This store has the best donkey balls, I really miss them. When you leave, they say, "do you want your balls in a sack" and "don't let your balls get sweaty" lmao. But seriously good treats, good chocolate!
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
When I told a friend back home I'd gotten him some donkey balls, he was horrified, then strangely excited - but these are not the balls which our sicko perverted minds are thinking of - these are chocolate-covered confections, similar to malt balls - but much tastier and filled with all the fruity, coffee-y and chocolatey goodness that Hawaiii has to offer. The store is two-sided - the entrance leads you into a cafe with pastries, and to your left there is a room with all the plastic bags of donkey balls displayed in their ballsy glory. There is a little tasting tray in front of the cash register of the cafe which has some of the flavors clearly labeled, and virtually all of them taste great, amplifying your donkey ball dilemma. The tray also doesn't have ALL of the flavors sold in the store. Besides donkey balls there are also chicken balls, monkey balls, mac nuts balls covered with mesquite flavor, spicy balls, as well as chocolate patties filled with nuts and fruits. A small section also carries spices and flavorings, as well as other souvenirs, such as golf ball donkey balls and donkey ball in three-packs.... The balls are sold in 4oz or 6oz packs with different price levels for different products (ie. Straight chocolate or chocolate with nuts, etc.). There is an clerk with an official-looking clipboard, who is ready to assist with any questions, if you're prone to donkey-ball meltdowns. Not being a chocolate aficionado - I prefer my calories to be consumed alcoholically - I'd only purchased two little bags for friends, but upon returning back to our condo and tasting my husband's balls, I regret my ball-busting decision and have since decimated the two bags of balls I'd purchased for friendds. Fortunately, as the Donkey Ball factory is one the way to our favorite snorkeling places we will certainly be back for more.

Yelp
I love anything that has to do with sweets and what's a better place to go than Donkey Balls?! The three different types are donkey balls, chicken balls and monkey balls. Donkey balls have macadamia nuts in them. I think it's funny and creative what they name their products. They let you sample different options whether it be the donkey balls or hurricane popcorn! The workers were very helpful and so kind to help me choose from the many options. The next time I come back, I will guaranteed pay a visit!
google avatar

Darrell P.

Yelp
Yes I know, its a tourist trap but I had to see what and where and how these Donkey Balls are made and because I bought these balls at the airport a few times. I had to wait for parking on the roadside when we got here while everyone went in to check out the balls. I finally got a space to park a few minutes later. Fyi- its roadside parking. When I walked in, yes it was all tourist and lo and behold, I saw my wife standing in line already waiting for the cashier to bag those donkey balls. I never saw her with so much balls in her hands o_O. Donkey balls, chickin balls and goat balls. All kine balls. The coffee balls were ono. These were my favorite. They also have a coffee shop inside with small kine knick nacks and some cool shot glasses that say "you gotta have balls". The walls are lined with different kinds of balls. Big balls, small balls and teeny tiny balls. I didnt see any factory machines making balls or anything like that or a window to look into so you can see the balls being handled by the workers. If you like the taste of these donkey balls when you put them in your mouth then this is your bag. Reach out grab some bags and stand in line. I would say buy them at the airport but they dont carry that much variety like they do here.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
You are paying for the funny product names when you buy Donkey Balls. We spent almost 20 minutes laughing over the different types of balls they had(dirty, flaky, blue, creaming, etc), finally deciding on the Frosted Ass balls(dark chocolate rolled in powder sugar). We bought the small bag which was $6.99 and included 5 balls. Then when we got home, we were excited to try these, but they ended up being kind of let-down. Extremely thick thick layer of chocolate. The ball is maybe 1 3/4" in diameter, but the macadamia nut inside is maybe 1/2" diameter(please see my pictures). You could tell it was good quality chocolate, but it was just TOO MUCH! Honestly, the "cheaper" Mauna Loa nuts at ABC stores, with a thinner layer of chocolate were easier to eat and what we preferred. It was funny, glad we bought some, but we would not do it again.

We stopped by because we saw the store on our way to our hotel. We saw FREE samples and we had to try out what they were all about. At the front desk, we were treated by Ariel who was super friendly and helped us out with tasty donkey ball samples! Aislynn, another worker here, made us a great tasting cup of coffee too! Great shop!
