"Tom, you've got to go to the original. Sure, there are a lot of 'Roy's' around, but this one is where it all started," my friend from Hawaii told me.
With that in mind, here we are, on a Friday evening, eating at Roy's Hawaii Kai. The one in Waikiki we could have walked to, but we needed to go to the original.
We arrived and were seated at a second-floor window seat with a breathtaking view of the bay. On this day there were many canoes out and it was nice to be able to take in the view and the canoes.
Do we start with a cocktail? Yes we do...we ordered two, and both tasted great. They've got a dedicated bartender who is interested in doing a good job. I was able to watch him do a little 'in service' lesson for a group of four young men that I assumed were bussers. You are never too young or old to add to your knowledge bank, and he bartender was willing to share.
Do we order the dinner tasting? Yes we do, for one, and then we add to it with a number of other items.
Do we think that these are the best crab cakes we've had in our life? We do discuss the issue and suffice it to say that they were out of this world tasty and very worthy of being in the conversation around the topic.
In short, we were very happy with our meal, the service, and the view, and we would encourage you to check it out. This was our first Roy's and so we can't compare it to the other outlets, but I'd be willing to try them all based on this visit.
I agree with my friend. You might as well start with the standard bearer and check out the others down the road.
