This Charming European City Is Known for 'The Sound of Music' and Mozart — How to Visit

"A four-hour, widely recommended excursion that shows "the highlights of the city as well as the Lake District," and, according to Craig Mitchell, will leave you "significantly more educated on the destination as a whole." Typical stops include the film's original shooting locations such as the von Trapp family home, Mirabell Gardens and the Pegasus Fountain (where Julie Andrews and the children dance), and the gazebo." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. 2025-Oct I enjoyed this tour! Our guide, Kylee, was fantastic — very upbeat, engaging, and knowledgeable about both the movie and the real Von Trapp family. The tour was in English, and our driver, Ferdinand, made the ride smooth and comfortable. We rode in a full-sized bus and made three main stops. The first was beside a beautiful lake, where Kylee showed us the back of two mansions used as the Von Trapp home in the movie. We also stopped at the relocated gazebo, famous for the “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” scene, and then visited the lovely town of Mondsee, where we saw St. Michael’s Basilica, the church where Maria and Captain Von Trapp’s wedding took place in the film. This was our longest stop and included time to eat at Café Braun (to be reviewed separately). Throughout the ride, Kylee points out other filming locations (but we didnt go down). In addition, a video featuring Liesl from the film played, celebrating the movie’s 40th anniversary. Kylee also encouraged everyone to sing along to some of the songs, which added a fun and cheerful touch. Restroom breaks were announced at some stops, which was appreciated. The tour ended at Mirabell Gardens, where Kylee pointed out — from the circular water feature — the spots used in the “Do-Re-Mi” scene where the Von Trapp children marched along the edge. The only thing I kind of questioned was that we only stopped at three locations (not counting Mirabell Gardens). I had expected a few more photo opportunities based on the itinerary. Still, the scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and it was a fun, nostalgic way to see Salzburg and its surroundings.

Following the scenes in the Sound of Music has always been a dream of mine. I went back and forth on doing this tour with some of the spots stopping for only 15 minutes would I want to go. I’m SOOO glad we did. Connor was our guide and made it the best tour! We recommend this tour if you love the sound of music, we found it helpful to know the places we wanted to go back to for more time.

Loved this tour, we got to head out of Salzburg to see some of the places the movie was filmed. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we had a sing along in the bus to the songs before or after we visited each location.

We did the bus tour and it was incredible!!! Brittney was our tour guide and I can’t remember the name of our bus driver, but he made really impressive maneuvers of the big bus in the town. The tour was so comprehensive - we learned so much about the actors and actresses, behind the scenes, and some history of Salzburg. We originally had wanted to do the bike tour but loved seeing the stunning Mountain View’s up near Mondsee. I would do this tour again and again, it was so fun!!

Simon our guide was really really funny & entertaining. We loved every moment of this tour and I usually find tours boring. Especially loved the town & plaza where the wedding scene was filmed…and the divine cheesecake we had across the road from the church!

Jose was an awesome tour guide and Dragon was a wonderful bus driver. Jose was full of energy. He was constantly cracking jokes. We learned a lot about the Sound of Music on this tour. My friend and I enjoyed it a lot and would definitely recommend. After the tour we headed to Herzl since our ticket reservations came with a 3 course meal. It was a delicious meal after the tour.

The tour is fantastic, as well as visiting all the filming locations and learning more about the film, you also learn so much about Salzburg itself and the real Maria. We planned our trip to Austria around this tour specifically and it was so worth it! We had tour guide Kylie and driver Ferdinand who were fantastic - their enthusiasm really added to the experience! It is well thought out with refreshments and toilet stops as well. (Picture of fabulous tour guide Kylie at the famous gazebo)

Our family recently went on The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg, and it was, without a doubt, one of the most memorable experiences of our entire trip. As longtime fans of the movie, we were excited to walk in the footsteps of the von Trapp family—and this tour exceeded all our expectations. Booking the tour was simple and straightforward. We opted for the half-day tour which lasted about 4 hours, and the bus was comfortable and air-conditioned—perfect for families. The staff was well-organized and ensured everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Our tour guide was a highlight in themselves—knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and entertaining. They balanced historical facts with fun trivia, stories from the movie’s production, and plenty of laughs. Their passion was infectious, and they kept everyone engaged, from kids to grandparents. The tour took us to all the iconic filming locations: • Mirabell Gardens – where Maria and the children sang “Do-Re-Mi”. Walking through those perfectly manicured gardens felt surreal. • Leopoldskron Palace – the lakeside view from the back of the von Trapp home. We didn’t go inside, but the exterior and lake were stunning. • Hellbrunn Palace Gazebo – yes, the “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” gazebo! It’s now fenced for safety, but still a magical spot to visit. • Nonnberg Abbey – the real abbey where Maria was a novice. We couldn’t go inside, but the view from above Salzburg was worth the stop. • Mondsee Cathedral – where the wedding scene was filmed. A gorgeous little town and the perfect place for a coffee break. We also enjoyed the scenic drive through the Salzkammergut Lake District, with breathtaking views that offered a break from the movie-focused part of the tour and showed off Austria’s natural beauty. What made the tour so special was how family-friendly it was. Our group had people of all ages, and everyone seemed to have a great time. The guide played songs from the movie on the bus, and a spontaneous sing-along broke out—cheesy in the best way! Even those in our family who weren’t major fans of the film ended up loving the experience. Whether you’re a die-hard Sound of Music fan or just want to enjoy the beautiful Austrian countryside and a bit of movie history, this tour is an absolute must-do. It was informative, fun, picturesque, and perfectly paced for families. We left with smiles, songs in our heads, and plenty of unforgettable memories. Highly recommended—bring your camera, your sense of wonder, and maybe even brush up on your lyrics!
