Chinatown (next to Maxwell Food Court MRT / Scarlet Hotel)
The place tries hard with its “mystery entrance” concept — a gimmick that’s not new anymore. You open the door, walk up a shophouse staircase, and arrive at the bar. Staff were friendly and quickly seated me at a reserved 8pm table. Unfortunately, that’s where everything went downhill.
The drinks menu written on a chalk board the only menu was shockingly limited. For a place charging $16 SGD for a 330ml draft beer, I’d expect the variety and quality of a 5-star hotel bar, not a barebones list. Seating was mostly long, rickety wooden benches with no aircon — just fans — which made it feel more like a hawker centre than a premium bar.
Service was another sore point: the waiter kept pestering us to order, even when drinks were already on the table. To make matters worse, we were told our reservation was capped at two hours — not exactly what you want to hear when trying to relax with friends.
On top of that, some patrons were openly smoking cigars and even vaping, despite vaping being banned in Singapore. The smoke drifted into our space, making it an even less pleasant experience.
Verdict:
Overpriced drinks, uncomfortable setup, poor service, and disregard for Singapore’s no-vaping law. With so many great bars around Chinatown, this one isn’t worth a second visit.
