How to Visit Highlands, North Carolina — America's Best Mountain Town

"The team behind Highlander Mountain House, which opened its doors in late 2020, is also making moves in the area’s hotel scene, with plans to complete a full transformation of The Wells Hotel in the next couple of months. In early October, the property will emerge as The Outpost Inn, a 14-room motel that owner Jason Reeves calls an 'immersive, peaceful experience' and a 'basecamp to the outdoors.'" - Travel + Leisure Editors

Stayed at the Outpost in mid-June of 2025. Room was comfortable, well-appointed, and clean. Ours was the 'bunkhouse', which is to say it had a couple of bunk beds in it -one was big enough for both of us. The unit had a fridge, coffee/tea, and a fully-supplied bath. Decorations were very nice. Fire pit with supplies for smores - relaxing way to end the day. The location was good for us - easily walk down to Highlands' taverns, restaurants, shopping. Check-in was super easy -- just the room's entry code. Service folks at the coffee bar were helpful (we needed ice). We'll plan to stay there again this fall.

For a three star hotel, this inn deserves five stars. The property is beautifully decorated with lots of indoor and outdoor seating areas for guests, including multiple fire pits with supplied firewood. The rooms are cozy and well appointed, decorated in a comfortable mountain style. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the coffee/wine bar even though they were temporarily not serving wine. We had our own wine and were allowed to consume it on the property. Our only recommendation would be to provide access to electrical outlets bedside for charging purposes and our mini bar area had no electrical outlet for the coffee pod machine. The inn is located about a 10-15 minute walk to downtown and also provides nice bicycles for guest use. We would stay here again.

This place is adorable and quaint! What a find! The service was outstanding. It is small, but very quaint. The amenities for this small place were great-fire pits everywhere. The decor is so warm and inviting. Rustic, but modern. The whole place felt like a warm blanket! Would highly recommend this place. It is also a real value for what you pay.

Google
My stay at Outpost Inn was amazing- definitely deserves more than 3 stars! Great service, and staff were knowledgeable about the area with suggestions of hikes, restaurants, and things to do in the area. Right down the road from downtown and very walkable! Room was quaint but perfect for me! They had s’mores ingredients waiting in the room, and a nice campfire/seating area outside! The lobby area was very cozy had complimentary coffee and banana bread throughout the day, and wine and an amazing smoked trout dip in the evening. Would most definitely return!

This is one of the best hotels I've stayed in! The location is fantastic, a short walk to downtown Highlands. I really didn't want to leave the inn though. The coffee/wine bar in the lobby was so fun and has a great selection of natural wines. The rooms are so cozy, with fireplaces, robes, high-end bath products and smores kits for the outdoor firepit. I would definitely stay here again.

Best coffee in Highlands! Quiet and charming space during the day with excellent coffees, pastries, and small bites options. Was able to work on my laptop throughout the day with strong wifi. Baristas are incredibly nice. Overall a relaxed, positive atmosphere. I didn't stay at the Inn, but would imagine an equally lovely experience based on the staff in the cafe. Would be an excellent stay if you have some work to do from your laptop on your trip, just come over to the cafe! They also have an interesting wine list for the evening (and all day if you're on vacation!). Bit more on the expensive side for that aspect, but that's Highlands for you. Can't wait to come again!

What a great discovery! This unique boutique hotel is within walking distance of Main Street. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Our room was very clean and uniquely decorated. If you are a nostalgic hippie at heart, this is the place for you. We will definitely return.

Google
Incredible stay at Outpost Inn, which far exceeded our expectations. Room had everything we needed, and more (#13), location was perfectly walkable to town, and all of the community touches really enhanced our stay from the complimentary rosè in the lobby, bluegrass band at check-in, and the charming swing and patio table off of our room. The staff was extremely kind and accommodating, especially Jeremy. The electric fireplace, blackout shades, and large wine fridge totally enhanced our stay. My only piece of feedback would be new pillows. I highly recommend Outpost Inn and will be back.

Yelp
Definitely bad... We arrived just after 4pm check in. We had received our room code via text. We opened the door and the room hadn't been cleaned. The person at the front desk said only one staff member was working. The accommodation was small. No chair to even put on your shoes. The fixtures were falling off the walls and in general disrepair. The price was exorbitant for what the condition of the room and having to wait so long for our room to be cleaned. There was no staff! Our room wasn't cleaned when we arrived. Then the next morning no one was available at the front desk. The signage said open hours begin at 9am. By 11 am the place was still locked and no one to be seen. The housekeeper said sorry no one was there.

Yelp
We loved the convenience of the electronic locks since I'm someone that is always misplacing the room card. We stayed in room 5 which was well appointed, however there was scuffed paint by the steps and in the bathroom which brought the aesthetic down. The couch and bed were on the firm side and sat low. The bathroom has a shower head and separate shower wand with high end soap and toiletries. I would stay here again!

Yelp
Last minute weekend trip and found this gem. It's 5 minutes from Main Street and the rooms are perfectly updated. We stayed in unit 1 and it had a fireplace, two flat screen TV's, excellent shower and skylights over the king bed.

Yelp
li have no idea how this place gets the reviews it does. our room smelled like mildew from the bathroom. The bed was an old memory foam bed that was hot and sucked you in a hole. The air conditioning was loud as it was an old window unit. The pictures on their website show clean skylights and ours was so filthy you could not see outside. The so called balcony is shared with the whole place. No privacy whatsoever, plus it is so close to the street you hear traffic noise. The parking is awful , everyone comes in at the same time it seems and the parking is very tight. needless to say we left after one night. we stayed long enough to sleep and get back on the road. I tried to call the front desk all day , no one would answer nor retur. the calls

Yelp
This exceeded our expectations. For its class, it was among the best mountain lodge experiences of my life, and I've stayed in many. Our room was in the original wing, which began as a classic one-level motel in the 1960s. Current owners gutted the rooms down to bare studs in 2019. Everything is new -- wiring, plumbing, furniture, bathrooms. The interiors look professionally designed. Someone chose premium finishes and furnishings, including linens. We had a king-size bed. Adjacent newer buildings are probably different; don't know. The lobby was under renovation in late March 2022 and looked to be finished by early April, so you'll have a brand-new lobby. We thought the room and hotel were delightful.

Yelp
Worst experience ever! We came to visit from Dallas, TX with the expectation we would stay at the Wells Hotel. Because of our flight we arrived at the hotel at 7pm well apparently they don't have anyone on site after 6pm so when it comes to asking for help you're literally screwed. We were given our lock box code to get in but it was not working. The code was my phone number so I know I wasn't messing up the digits but after an hour or of trying and calling the emergency lock out line we ended up having to find another hotel. We sent 4 messages on air bnb, left 2 voicemails to the emergency line and come the next morning NO ONE had reached out to us. When we showed up during their opening hours there was a young girl in the front desk who acted clueless and when we asked about a refund she said "yeah...I don't know...that's up to my boss" and we to can we have his number or can you call him. So she finally did and they said there would be a refund yet it's been a week and I have yet to see any refund. I'm truly upset about the lack of respect and customer service of the Wells Hotel. I was super excited to stay there but I will spread the word moving forward for not anyone to plan on staying at the Wells. If this happens to you, the Old Edward Hotel accommodated us last minute and even apologized on behalf of the Wells Hotel when the Wells Hotel never even apologized for their lack of service. We have a huge group coming up for the Holidays and for Valentines Day and we already rebooked at the Old Edward.

Yelp
Our room had not been cleaned properly when we arrived. We had to ask to have the bathroom cleaned. Mold and mildew throughout the room. Rotting wood on the stairs. Badly potholed drive caused cars to bottom out trying to get up to the parking area. Our split unit AC did not work (temps hit 100 the day we arrived) and the staff basically did not care. As noted by another reviewer, they seemed more interested in talking on the phone or texting. Our group was given the exact same code to open all our doors. No two rooms should share a door code! There was a power failure which caused all the door locks to "crash". As it was after 5 there was no one on premises (apparently the staff is only there 8-5) so the emergency number had to be called. It was only 6:30! We left and moved to another hotel after one night. This is no boutique hotel.
