How to Visit Highlands, North Carolina — America's Best Mountain Town

"The team behind Highlander Mountain House, which opened its doors in late 2020, is also making moves in the area’s hotel scene, with plans to complete a full transformation of The Wells Hotel in the next couple of months. In early October, the property will emerge as The Outpost Inn, a 14-room motel that owner Jason Reeves calls an 'immersive, peaceful experience' and a 'basecamp to the outdoors.'" - Travel + Leisure Editors

Outpost Inn (Highlands, North Carolina) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Equal parts summer camp, roadside motel, and low-key artist retreat, Outpost Inn brings a playful, free-spirited energy to the Blue Ridge. Just a short walk from downtown Highlands, its 14 rooms channel mid-century nostalgia with record players, hand-sewn quilts, and retro mountain charm. Guests gather for campfires, stretch out on screened porches, and linger in the wood-paneled lobby. It’s a place to unplug, meet a stranger, spin a record, and remember why you came to the mountains in the first place." - Tablet Hotels

From start to finish, our stay at the Outpost Inn (Room #8) was stellar. Alex, Jason, and the staff welcomed us with open arms as if we were family. Both the common space and our room were cozy, quiet, and beautifully appointed. The coffee and wine bar adds to the warm, relaxed atmosphere, and the vinyl record players throughout the property are a wonderful vintage touch. It was truly a top-notch experience, and we’ll always stay here—or at their sister property, The Highlander, in town. We’re already looking forward to our next visit.

Where to even begin.. this place was excellent!! We have stayed at their sister hotel, HMH, a few years ago and loved it so we were excited to try outpost inn. They definitely matched the vibes with this hotel. The decor, bigger rooms with a fireplace, a wine/ coffee bar with the coolest mcm fireplace, and they accommodated us with our 10 month old. We were greeted with a smore kit and anniversary drinks. They even took some chairs out of the room so we had more room for the pack and play. Alex was so awesome with all of her wine recommendations and great conversation. You can tell she loves what she does. They are a little off of the main drag which is so nice. We always had a parking spot and everything was about a 3 minute drive from us. We can’t wait to come back to visit again!

It was our first time at the Outpost Inn but won’t be our last! Absolutely adorable…rooms so perfectly curated into fun, cozy, and comfy spaces. Each one is different with such attention to detail. Location was perfect…walkable to town, breakfast, and trails. Staff were all nice and helpful. I highly recommend checking them out!

Our experience at the Outpost Inn Highlands was wonderful. From the wafting aroma of woodsmoke coming from the fireplace on our arrival to the warm, cozy and totally fun lobby, to the welcoming and attentive staff, everything was perfect. It was my wife’s birthday trip to the mountains, something she had looked forward to for a very long time. This was one of the best. Our room (#6) was eclectic, fun and very comfortable. The appointments (especially the bath products and the yummy robe - we bought a bunch of things to take home) were first rate. We celebrated her birthday dinner at the Outpost’s sister hotel, the Highland Mountain House in town. Great food and it was Blues night in the Ruffled Grouse (Scott Low was terrrific). The location of the Outpost Inn is ideal, a delightful and short walk into town - sidewalks all the way. We often didn’t drive. The Outpost Inn Highlands created wonderful memories for us. We are coming back!

I stayed here as was visiting a client in town. This is such a cute hotel. It's impeccably well furnished, and has such a relaxed atmosphere. My only frustration was that I didn't stay for longer. The rooms are great, well appointed and nicely furnished. The staff were all ever so helpful and the complimentary coconut bread for breakfast was a nice touch. They even supply marshmallows ans biscuits to make s'mores in one of their various firepits!

Google
I cannot say enough about the Outpost Inn Highlands. Having a small cabin in Highlands, I have not had the need to stay in a hotel or inn, but I have always thought - "that place is cute - I should check it out." Well, I had to vacate my house for renovations for 48 hours - why not check out the Outpost Inn? Fantastic!!!! I don't know where to begin - the check-in process was terrific (periodic text messages with welcome and next steps). The room was perfect - not bougie "look at me" perfect, but one of those - "where on Earth does the owner get his-her taste" - crazy cute. I could go on and on - price, pumpkin bread available in the AM, a great assortment of pay-as-you-eat items in the room, and a lobby that is adorable and communal. The lobby vibe was a "leave your political affiliation and troubles at the threshold - this is the time and place to be kind and mindful." Well done and I will definitely stay again if the need or desire arises. Check this place out! S Jennings

Google
LOVED the coziness and warmth that the Outpost Inn provided. Walking distance to the Highlands main street but away from the tourist traffic. The staff were excellent, very attentive and great hosts. Enjoyed the warmth of the fireplaces both inside and outside, which accompanied a s'mores kit. Very cool vibe and one that we truly enjoyed!! Thank you!!

Yelp
Definitely bad... We arrived just after 4pm check in. We had received our room code via text. We opened the door and the room hadn't been cleaned. The person at the front desk said only one staff member was working. The accommodation was small. No chair to even put on your shoes. The fixtures were falling off the walls and in general disrepair. The price was exorbitant for what the condition of the room and having to wait so long for our room to be cleaned. There was no staff! Our room wasn't cleaned when we arrived. Then the next morning no one was available at the front desk. The signage said open hours begin at 9am. By 11 am the place was still locked and no one to be seen. The housekeeper said sorry no one was there.

Yelp
We loved the convenience of the electronic locks since I'm someone that is always misplacing the room card. We stayed in room 5 which was well appointed, however there was scuffed paint by the steps and in the bathroom which brought the aesthetic down. The couch and bed were on the firm side and sat low. The bathroom has a shower head and separate shower wand with high end soap and toiletries. I would stay here again!

Yelp
Last minute weekend trip and found this gem. It's 5 minutes from Main Street and the rooms are perfectly updated. We stayed in unit 1 and it had a fireplace, two flat screen TV's, excellent shower and skylights over the king bed.

Yelp
li have no idea how this place gets the reviews it does. our room smelled like mildew from the bathroom. The bed was an old memory foam bed that was hot and sucked you in a hole. The air conditioning was loud as it was an old window unit. The pictures on their website show clean skylights and ours was so filthy you could not see outside. The so called balcony is shared with the whole place. No privacy whatsoever, plus it is so close to the street you hear traffic noise. The parking is awful , everyone comes in at the same time it seems and the parking is very tight. needless to say we left after one night. we stayed long enough to sleep and get back on the road. I tried to call the front desk all day , no one would answer nor retur. the calls

Yelp
This exceeded our expectations. For its class, it was among the best mountain lodge experiences of my life, and I've stayed in many. Our room was in the original wing, which began as a classic one-level motel in the 1960s. Current owners gutted the rooms down to bare studs in 2019. Everything is new -- wiring, plumbing, furniture, bathrooms. The interiors look professionally designed. Someone chose premium finishes and furnishings, including linens. We had a king-size bed. Adjacent newer buildings are probably different; don't know. The lobby was under renovation in late March 2022 and looked to be finished by early April, so you'll have a brand-new lobby. We thought the room and hotel were delightful.

Yelp
Worst experience ever! We came to visit from Dallas, TX with the expectation we would stay at the Wells Hotel. Because of our flight we arrived at the hotel at 7pm well apparently they don't have anyone on site after 6pm so when it comes to asking for help you're literally screwed. We were given our lock box code to get in but it was not working. The code was my phone number so I know I wasn't messing up the digits but after an hour or of trying and calling the emergency lock out line we ended up having to find another hotel. We sent 4 messages on air bnb, left 2 voicemails to the emergency line and come the next morning NO ONE had reached out to us. When we showed up during their opening hours there was a young girl in the front desk who acted clueless and when we asked about a refund she said "yeah...I don't know...that's up to my boss" and we to can we have his number or can you call him. So she finally did and they said there would be a refund yet it's been a week and I have yet to see any refund. I'm truly upset about the lack of respect and customer service of the Wells Hotel. I was super excited to stay there but I will spread the word moving forward for not anyone to plan on staying at the Wells. If this happens to you, the Old Edward Hotel accommodated us last minute and even apologized on behalf of the Wells Hotel when the Wells Hotel never even apologized for their lack of service. We have a huge group coming up for the Holidays and for Valentines Day and we already rebooked at the Old Edward.

Yelp
Our room had not been cleaned properly when we arrived. We had to ask to have the bathroom cleaned. Mold and mildew throughout the room. Rotting wood on the stairs. Badly potholed drive caused cars to bottom out trying to get up to the parking area. Our split unit AC did not work (temps hit 100 the day we arrived) and the staff basically did not care. As noted by another reviewer, they seemed more interested in talking on the phone or texting. Our group was given the exact same code to open all our doors. No two rooms should share a door code! There was a power failure which caused all the door locks to "crash". As it was after 5 there was no one on premises (apparently the staff is only there 8-5) so the emergency number had to be called. It was only 6:30! We left and moved to another hotel after one night. This is no boutique hotel.
