The Owl Bar – Baltimore, Maryland - Gastro Obscura

"When the Belvedere Hotel opened its doors on December 14, 1903, it became Baltimore’s first luxury hotel. Off the posh lobby of the Beaux Arts–style building was the Owl Bar, then known simply as the Bar Room. Because it served alcohol, admission was restricted to men. The bar quickly became one of the city’s most popular and notorious watering holes, frequented by clientele ranging from businessmen and politicians to bookies and gangsters. Although the spittoons are gone, today the Owl Bar looks much as it did when it opened. The walls are ornate brickwork and dark wood paneling. Vintage chandeliers illuminate the dimly lit space. Murals of Renaissance scenes harken to a brief period when the bar was known as the Falstaff Room. Stained glass windows, backlit behind the bar, feature images of owls and the following nursery rhyme: A wise old owl sat in an oakthe more he saw the less he spoke. The less he spoke the more he heardwhy can’t we all be like that wise old bird? The simple rhyme assumed additional significance with the onset of Prohibition on January 17, 1920. For the next 13 years, the bar operated as a speakeasy and served bootleg liquor to in-the-know patrons. Then owner Colonel Consolvo added to the bar’s owl-themed décor when he brought in two large plaster owl statues and placed them on the cash registers. The owls were named Sherry Belle and John Eager Howard, and they had electric glass eyes that signaled the availability of contraband whiskey. An amber eye on each owl would blink when the hotel’s basement had liquor and the coast was clear of law enforcement. When Prohibition ended in 1933, the owls mysteriously disappeared. Like many urban establishments, the Belvedere Hotel fell on hard times by the 1970s. Although used briefly for low-rent student housing, the building closed in January 1972 due to code violations. Contractor Victor Frenkil bought the property at auction in 1976 and set about returning the Belvedere to its former glory. When the bar reopened, it was officially named the Owl Bar. And thus began a search for the original eponymous birds. Eventually, Frenkil’s friend found them in New York. Late one night in April 1977, they mysteriously reappeared in the locked bar, with a new poem: Where we’ve been, what we’ve seen  No matter the din, no one will glean. But if your eyes are clear today you can tell  The Owls of Belvedere—have returned from Hell! The revamped Owl Bar hosted patrons merrily until around 1990, when financial problems and a dispute with the city led to Frenkil leaving with the owls in tow. In 1991, restaurateur Dion Dorizas bought the bar and transformed it into the Taos Cafe, a southwest American eatery, with coyotes in place of the beloved owls. Locals did not go along for the ride. By 1995, Frenkil and the birds were back. The 30-pound owls now sit on high perches behind the bar and continue to watch over staff and patrons. And, sometimes, they still wink. Know Before You Go The bar is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 2:00 p.m. to midnight." - Collector of Experiences, Sydney Rose, evilolive, kellyn1165, alittlebrowndog, blimpcaptain

Brunch on Saturday—we were the first one there! Dark and rustic vibes, super cool. Just a little empty. Got the baked brie and truffle burger with house fries! Friends got biscuits (gravy was delicious) and belvedere breakfast without meat. Everything came out fresh and hot, and portions were generous! This place pleasantly surprised us! Would come again to try the duck fat fries.

Food was tasty, Burger, pasta, Chicken sandwich were all good but what really stood out was the pizza. They had a full brick oven and we had been seated close so we were able to watch them make the pizza and it was delicious! The cocktails were good and properly made. They seemed slightly understaffed so one waitress seemed to be taking care the majority of the room. She was great when attending us.

The food was excellent! I dined with a party of three, and we enjoyed the calamari, crab mac and cheese, fried tomatoes, and mango BBQ wings. We also ordered the buffalo cauliflower, but we had to send it back—it tasted like a frozen pre-made dish and lacked flavor. On the bright side, my Manhattan was fantastic. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and will definitely be returning to try more items on the menu.

The entrance to get to this bar is absolutely stunning - the neon sign announcing the hotel outside - the magnificent flower bouquet (fake, but it looks great!) and then a hallway where you can read the history and see the celebrities that have graced the bar. Not this bar though…. I hope. Because while perfectly polite a discerning patron would find the service lacking. The martini I ordered came quite strong and quite tepid. Not blended nearly enough to keep it crisp. I was drinking room temperature gin after two sips. Then - well meaning as it was - a bartender started going around the bar spraying cleaner right onto the bar. Not her towel or away from patrons/drinks but right in the bar, getting spray most certainly in, near, and around the drinks. A simple issue that could be fixed. Lastly - I went on a slow Saturday apparently: last call was 9:45 with an abrupt and resounding/blaring “The Party’s Over” by Willie Nelson. Yes - it was time to go at 9:53p on a Saturday. I just hope all those celebrities had a different experience or I fear few others will show up in the future.

Bryan and "South Dakota" (fantastic bartenders) were very amiable and efficient. They made me unique non-alcoholic drinks that weren't on the menu. Despite being busy because of the wedding crowd, they still made time for me😇

Google
Food is subpar. Cocktails were good but took 30 minutes to be delivered. Waitress didn't write anything down for a table of 6 and subsequently messed up some orders. Belvedere hotel is really historical and the atmosphere of the bar is cool. I recommend going for a cocktail sitting directly at the bar if possible.

We were looking for a 20s inspired bar that served food and had my favorite drink. This place was awesome! Not only was Bee's Knees on the menu, it was perfect. We had a chicken sandwich and the duck fat fries, and we were impressed. The music was great, and service was even better! I wish we lived in Baltimore to be able to visit frequently. You have 2 Texans who will definitely visit if we go back.

I feel like I've been transported to like somewhere in London. Very old chic and I like the food. Great happy hour deals and the sangria was great!

Yelp
I love a historic bar and this didn't disappoint. I was killing time after a pedicure down the road and found this spot, lucky me! First of all the service was stellar. Greeted, suggestions made, served promptly. I really was here for a drink, but decided to nibble and I got the duck fat fries. Divine! Heaven! And they pair well with Chardonnay. Crispy outside, perfect inside fluffiness with a touch of truffle. Parmesan flakes sprinkled about. A plentiful basket enough for two. Mmmm! The vibe here is truly historic. I think it kind of reminds me of the bar at Château Marmont. I met some interesting people here. I guess this building was an old hotel and now is converted to apartments and this is the residence restaurant. Pretty nice! I'd be here daily. I think this bar is amazing!

Yelp
Came after an orchestra concert at Peabody so we were part of the late crowd @ 11pm and they were only serving pizza & drinks at this point (rest of menu not available). Service seemed to be a bit off -- two times someone came to our table to ask for our drink orders & then to confirm what we ordered. Ordered the Anna's pizza and honestly, it was really good! (they have a pizza oven on the far size of the restaurant out in the open) Very interesting vibes -- can be a bit loud but the bar/ambiance was great. Oh & check your bill at the end. I started to look at it & the server came & mumbled something, took it away. When it came back it was $20 less. ************************ On a side note: the history of the building had me intrigued so when we went into a local bookshop (The Book Escape @ 925 S. Charles St.), where I found "An Unexplained Death" by Mikita Brottman. They're a writer & lives in the building -- telling the tale of a death at the residence from the past. Worth the read!!

Yelp
I have loved and been an advocate for Owl Bar for many years, but this past weekend's dining experience left much to be desired. Our friend had called previously to make a reservation, but when we got there, they had no record of it on their books. Luckily they were able to seat us anyway but, not a good sign. We were a large party and our service seemed to struggle. Food was overall good but ok. Cocktails were good and beer selection was decent. I ordered a burger and added an upcharge for fries from chips (a noted option on the menu, not something I asked for special). Somehow this was the most complicated thing that's ever happened. Our waitress brought the burger with chips, and put it in front of me, I touched it - but I mentioned I had ordered fries. So she took the whole plate back!? What! What was she planning to do with those chips? A food runner came back 2 more times to ask what my new side was... I do not understand the confusion or the complication. Finally she brought back my burger, the same plate, which they had scooped the chips off and put fries on, so now my burger was room temp. At that point everyone else was already eating and I wasn't going to argue, but the entire experience was pretty ridiculous. Hopefully this was a one off but this was not the Owl Bar I remember!

Yelp
The best part of our experience was the bar's aesthetic, which really is fantastic. Beautiful brick, tile and stained glass create fantastic ambience. The Penicillin cocktail was enjoyable, albeit an unremarkable whiskey cocktail, but the other - the Say It Ain't So - was undrinkable. It was overly sweet, the flavors were out of balance and the rye bourbon was undetectable; rarely have I encountered such an unenjoyable cocktail. The service was hurried and impersonal. We closed out without finishing the awful cocktail and went elsewhere.

Yelp
Came on a Wed. evening with a friend. After 6pm, you're able to park on the street for free and in the bike/bus lane. Bar is on the 1st floor when you walk in. The have dining seats and a bar area. I didn't make it into the bar area. They also had Trivia night starting at 7!! I'd love to come back for this! We had the chicken wings and duck fat fries. Both were just okay. The wings felt cold in the middle and not as tasty. The duck fat fries were just not my liking Cocktails were good Trivia music DJ was great!

Yelp
Love the ambiance here. The sliders were okay. The drink was a seasonal cocktail and pretty good.

Yelp
I was staying in the area and stopped past for happy hour. It's like a dark kinda old school vibe. I joked that I thought Jack Nicholson would be sliding up at the bar (you know his The Shining character). The wings were really good and the sangria tasty. I didn't care for the chicken sliders. Definitely would come back for wings and a cocktail if I'm in the area! Service was great!

Yelp
If you want to submerge yourself in history, specifically the era of prohibition, The Owl Bar has the historical facts, ambience and photographs to showcase. Some of the rich and famous who have visited, dined and stayed overnight here are: Al Pacino, Patti Labelle, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Kenny Rogers, Roy Rogers, David Copperfield, The Duke & Duchess of Windsor, Presidents Theo Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Hoover, Franklin D Roosevelt, Harding, Truman, and Eisenhower. If you look closely at the hotel's walls leading to The Owl Bar you can see some of these patrons via the photographs showcased. The restaurant is located inside the Belvedere Hotel and is the original speakeasy which opened its doors in December 1903. It's worth visiting to take a step back in time. Duck fat fries and a glass of sparkling wine does the soul good. Take in the ambience, sip on some bubbles and be thankful that we don't live in an era without alcohol. It does get VERY crowded here. They have a massive and loyal happy hour crowd which can make it hard to locate parking.

Yelp
The owl bar has been on my list for a while so here is my attempt at an honest and unbiased review. I should note that I was initially drawn to this place by its ambiance and atmosphere which on that level it 100% delivered, very cool place. My initial thoughts after being seated were that the menu is incredibly overpriced, one of their drinks literally costed 16$... the same price as one of their entrees. So we just ordered some basic rail drinks and the duck fat fries. The duck fat fries were delicious so after that we decided to order entrees , duck tacos and pork tacos. They took a while to come out but when we got them the first thing I noticed was that 1) I didn't get the duck tacos I ordered and on top of that 2) both orders of pork tacos were drier than a leather belt, but we were starved so we ate them anyways. While closing out I pointed out to the waiter about the food quality and order mess up and he comped my tacos which I was very grateful for. Overall TLDR: The owl bar is a great place to go for some fun drinks/apps and cool ambiance but for their pricing the kitchen quality needs to be brought up to a much higher standard.

Yelp
Owl bar has been on my list for a few months now and I was so excited to try this place out finally! Located in the historic Belvedere Hotel this bar is one of the oldest in Baltimore. I stalked their IG for months that showed photos of amazing food and drinks. The atmosphere is very chill and relaxed. The staff is very friendly and helpful as well. We started off with drinks which were really good. For food we first ordered the crab dip and the calamari. The dip was delicious! This was the most crab i had ever seen in dip. I would recommend maybe adding a little salt to the dish but overall we wiped the bowl clean! The calamari was just okay. Nothing amazing but still good. We then ordered the truffle burger and the mozzarella panini. The truffle burger was just okay and the duck fries were cold sadly. The panini was good but had a little too much going on for me. The regular fries were good as well. I would definitely give them another try. Maybe for happy hour instead so that I could try more from the menu. They seem to have a great happy hour menu from what I saw. I think this would be a great place to have an event, meet up with friend or just stop in for a quick drink. The staff were a 10/10, drinks 10/10 and food 8.2/10 for me.

Yelp
We went on a Saturday afternoon as a group after work. The ambience is nice and the service was great. We had some good cocktails and there was a good choice of beers on tap. Great place to hangout

Yelp
Came here for dinner & drinks! Parking was not too difficult to find with street parking a few blocks away, but usually harder on Charles st. I have been here before for happy hour, but this time I decided to get some food! I've heard great things about their pizza, especially since they have a brick oven! The vibes are great, it feels very cozy and it's nice to come for a date or close friends! My friend got the tacos and enjoyed them, while I got the veggie panini, which was solid but nothing special. Drinks wise, I got the espresso martini which I enjoyed as well. This place is good for bar food and a nice ambience for drinks! I don't think they have a happy hour anymore.

Yelp
So I've been to Owl Bar plenty of times and usually only get drinks during happy hour. This time I actually tried the food and ordered the duck tacos and the crab cake dinner. The crab cake came with a heaping pile of aoli on top which I scraped off but it wasn't terrible and actually complimented the crab cake. The asparagus and roasted potatoes were great. Seasoned well and cooked perfectly! I really enjoyed the crab cake dinner. Now, the duck tacos are another story. They were so bland. The duck was tender but had absolutely no flavor. The tacos came with a slaw on top and I think some type of aoli. Either way, it was not satisfying to my taste buds. It was missing some acid so I even took the lemon from my drink to squeeze on top to give it some type of umph. Womp womp, it did nothing to help. I would not suggest the duck tacos unless you appreciate bland food then this is the meal for you!! Overall, the drinks are good and the food is decent. Try it out for yourself. A cute, happy hour spot!!

Yelp
Pizza was good, but poor service. Longest I've ever wait for food. Over an hour to get a simple cheese pizzas and burger. Drinks were mid at best, we had the espresso martini and spicy margarita. Waitress was not attentive, had to ask multiple times for things. She also took my friends pizza away without asking if she wanted a box! Will not come back due to poor service

Yelp
I love this place! A great night cap or late night snack spot. Decor is fun, especially in October.

Yelp
Had the meat lover pizza. It was pretty good. The ambience and history of the bar are fantastic! Will definitely go back with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this space! Cocktails were delicious and we were waited on by several people but Jackie outshined them all! Outgoing, silly, and sweet but most importantly Jackie made the perfect drink, thank you! Such an amazing piece of history it's perfect to visit for happy hour or a nightcap. I will say the crab cake was so so, on the small side with ok flavor but everything else was so amazing I didn't really mind or matter.

Yelp
A family member made an impromptu visit to town and made plans for several family and friends to gather for dinner and drinks. Originally at a popular east side seafood restaurant... That didn't work so he scrambled to find a place to accommodate the sizable group. And that's how we landed at this midtown dive. If you're familiar with the Belvedere Hotel... You know that it's way past its prime and in dire need of a REAL update. The place is dirty. Being that it's late in October, it's no surprise that the place would be decked out with Halloween decor. But trust me when I tell you that was not the only scary thing we encountered this evening. In all fairness our server Delia was fantastic. She worked with what she had and she seemed to handle our group of 11 with ease. The first sign of trouble occurred during drinks and starter items. My drink tasted like something I would get out of my dentist office. My friend sitting next to me complained that his calamari was way too salty and sent it back. Others complained that the calamari had been overcooked. When the main courses began to come out... We all looked suspiciously at our meals but proceeded anyway. I went with a burger because I did not trust this place to handle anything heavier than that at this point. How can you screw up a burger? Fortunately for me and a few others who had the burger, they didn't. But the fries were another story. How can you screw up fries? No seriously... how Sway? Bewildered as I am, they managed to do so. Our group of usual suspects is no stranger to eating out in groups together and we usually have a great time despite the level of food quality. Last night was no different, but this place ranked very low with all of us. It simply was not good. Aside from the terrible food... Like the rest of the Belvedere Hotel common areas, this place is in desperate need of a deep cleaning. I couldn't help but notice that the carpet in the restaurant looked like it may not have been clean since the 80s. Proceed to this deplorable dingy den of dreadful dinners and dislikable drinks at one's own peril. I said what I said

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Don't ever go to this dump. The service is abysmal. The management is rude and the food is sub par. We came for a friend's birthday and they could not have made it more miserable. I would not recommend coming here if you want to have a good time.

Yelp
Good food and fun ambience. I got pizza and husband got a burger which he loved. Cool place

Yelp
Came here for drinks after my birthday dinner and I had a good experience! I love the speakeasy vibe, and The Owl Bar did not disappoint at all. We were able to get a table pretty quick and service overall was quick for drinks as well. We got a variety of drinks and everything tasted great! Would highly recommend and would love to come back!

Yelp
This is one of the best bars in Baltimore. Great ambience and even better service. Sergio is the best!

Yelp
Let me set the scene: it was my husband's birthday celebration night. We were childless, dressed up, and already feeling good after a cocktail making class. I'd seen some awesome reviews of Owl Bar on TikTok and was excited for the experience. We loved the feel of the restaurant and how it was tucked away with the building. Unfortunately there was little love beyond that. Everything else was fine, just fine. We both ordered specialty drinks we wouldn't recommend. We started with the wings that were thin and lacked flavor. We shared the shrimp pasta that felt overpriced with the cheapest ingredients. I realllllly wanted to love this place but it was ... fine.

Alejandro P.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here, and I was delighted to have a young man named Oscar as my server, he made my experience there great. Would definitely recommend this place to my friends and I definitely will be coming back.

Yelp
I live in the Mount Vernon area and have been a fan of The Owl Bar since I moved here. I first heard about this establishment in the book /111 Places in Baltimore that You Must Not Miss/. Since then, it has been a favorite haunt of mine. Located inside the historic Belvedere Hotel, the bar itself has a storied prohibition-era history that is worth looking up. I like to bring friends new to the area and out-of-town guests here, and the good drinks with the flair of local history always impress. Dark, but thankfully not quite dank, The Owl Bar is floor-to-ceiling brick, punctuated with Zebra taxidermy and stained glass panels that, if you read into the poem properly, should remind the drinker of this place's true prohibition speakeasy, don't-narc-to-the-feds-about-the-hooch past. October/Halloween is my favorite time to visit, as they really lean in to the spooky vibes of the space and decorate, and have a great list of seasonal cocktails (I had a S'Mores Old Fashioned I still think about to this day). I went for the first time since the beginning of the COVID era recently, and they're serving up an updated menu. I honestly wasn't a huge fan of some of their food previously (very blah fried pickles), so I'm excited to try some of the updated fare. Their burgers are good, but I generally think of this space as more of a cocktail bar and don't often order full meals. I highly recommend The Owl Bar--if not for the crafted cocktails, then the unique ambiance alone is worth a visit.

Yelp
Bland food. Veggie panini NOT good. Crab dip pizza was ok.. Crab/corn hushpuppies tasted like grease. Apparently Thursday night is super busy. It took over an hour to get our subpar food. My niece liked her prosciutto panini. Nephew liked the belvedere burger but neither was anything special.

Julianne B.

Yelp
This bar inside the Belvedere was so fun! My friend and I went in before an event and it was great! They decorated for Halloween and my friends drink even had a spider ring in it! The drinks were delicious. I had a smooth ginger ale and gin and a yummy "Sanderson Sisters Sangria". Service took a bit longer than usual, but it was Saturday night and it was really busy, so we understood. I'll definitely be back here next time I'm in town!

Nancy W.

Yelp
I recently visited the Owl Bar in Baltimore for Sunday brunch. The food was excellent. The manager was very gracious and our waitress, Harmony, was one of the most attentive servers I have ever encountered. Also the vintage decor of this one time "speak easy" is quite charming. I look forward to returning here very soon. Nancy Wolfe.

Yelp
Really loved the vibe here! Our server had just started (2 days before) but was excellent. My friend and I shared all three course during our restaurant week meal. We ordered the tomato saffron mussels, poutine, sweet potato gnocchi, fish n chips, bread pudding, and ice cream flight. I can say confidently the poutine was the crowd favorite. It was seasoned fries (not too salty cuz I'm old and my taste buds can't take it) and a roast beef in gravy topped with goat cheese. The gnocchi was a little tough (Baltimore has some excellent Italian so now I'm a snob), but the coconut curry sauce it came in was so delicious. The fish was well battered, not too heavy-handed and the right amount of old bay (again the salt thing). I don't like bread pudding in general so this one didn't change my mind. The ice cream flavors sounded better than they tasted. The only one we enjoyed was the strawberry and rose. The dessert was pretty disappointing, but didn't take away from us wanting to come back. I can't wait to try them for happy hour; the specials looked great!

Karen R.

Yelp
Tried to get drinks at the Owl Bar before dinner elsewhere. We were interrogated by three separate employees who made clear our party was unwelcome. Unlike the hundreds of bars I've visited in my lifetime, this bar does not allow any patrons to stand and enjoy drinks at the bar. Finding a way to accommodate us for 30 minutes for drinks in a half empty bar was beyond the abilities of this staff. There are too many bars and restaurants in this area to waste time with people who act like this. I once saw a rat run up the brick wall beside the pizza oven here--this place is not exactly the Ritz Carlton, not sure what is going on with the attitude.

Yelp
Yesterday was my first day living in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. Not only was my experience pleasant but I ended it at the amazing "Owl Bar." It's located inside of a hotel, but I forgot the name of it. My bartender was one of the best i've encountered. She even drew a map to guide me back to my apartment. The food was excellent. I enjoyed a half dozen of Korean BBQ wings accompanied by a deviled egg appetizer. Blasting through the environment were oldie but goodie songs that we all could relate too. I'm extremely happy that I live within walking distance of Owl. 5 stars!

Yelp
Great ambiance and good food! Excellent wait staff and bartenders make you feel at home. Highly recommend

Yelp
Yikes. Nothing worse than a really rude bartender. Tried to order some bites during HH. Was looking forward to the Bacon Basket (which is clearly on the menu) but I guess asking questions about the menu hit a nerve for the bartender. There was a lot of eye rolling and stand-offish body language. Ended up not ordering anything. Probably won't return.

Yelp
Stopped in the Owl Bar to kick off a ladies night and it was a great choice! Our server Kim was awesome and such a sweet heart. We had an assortment of drinks, all made well (and strong! Lol). We tried the crab Mac & Cheese, Duck Fries, Fried Green Tomatoes, Calamari, and Crab Hushpuppies! Everything was delicious (the duck fries weren't a must have). We also had tried their pizzas! Fresh, crispy and full of flavor. The only reason this wasn't a 5 star experience was the food wait time... it was certainly "extended" and once it did start coming out it came out in stages so everyone was eating at different times. Would certainly return and ask for Kim!

Yelp
My kids and I took my mother here for her birthday Friday. My daughter's boyfriend said he liked it and it was reasonably priced, although he had only gotten the pizza. That probably should have been an indication that maybe the seafood would not be the best thing on the menu...because it wasn't. It's basically a bar/restaurant. It was really dark inside, which didn't bother me and it's also inside The Belvedere, which was nice. Now, back to the food... This is a good place if you like bar food: pizza, wings and burgers. We didn't order pizza, but the wings and the burger I had was really good. I ordered crab corn hush puppies with some kind of really sweet corn dip on the side. They had very little crab. THEY WERE ALSO BURNT. Disappointing. My mother, the birthday girl, ordered fried green tomatoes with crab. She also said it had very little crab. Her main course was the crabcake platter. She said it had more filler than crab. Now, we Marylanders know our crabs. Why do a crab dish if you're not going to do it right and charge $31 for it???? Lastly, a small thing that bothered me was the fact that they had no ketchup. I know there are supply chain shortages, but I never heard that ketchup was in short supply. They're not in the middle of the desert. There were several drugstores, etc., around them. Why didn't they just send someone to the store to grab a couple bottles, or better yet, have it delivered? That just boggled our minds. I really wanted my mother to have a good "food" experience on her birthday, but it just didn't happen that day. Maybe if we all just ordered pizza and wings...

Yelp
I rarely visit the Owl Bar any more, despite the fabulous decor and location, because they're so understaffed. It's always really loud and busy, and there are maybe 2 servers for the entire restaurant. Sometimes it can take 45 minutes to get served, and even then, the food isn't that great. The staff work really hard but they just can't deal with the number of people who need service.

Patrick N.

Yelp
I was so excited to check this place out. I love the historical aspect, and the beauty of its design is undeniable. The experience, however, was very disappointing. The first martini was slightly short poured, and the second was drastically short poured by the attractive, young, but inexperienced bartender. The chicken (in the Belvedere Bird sandwich) was so overcooked that it was barely edible (though the duck fat fries were amazing). There was a glowering manager lurking about, but he wasn't friendly and didn't check in. The six dollar espresso seemed a bit much. It's a shame, I had high hopes.

Yelp
I've been to The Owl Bar a few times for happy hour and thats really all I can see myself going here for. Its inside a hotel but far from a hotel bar! The atmosphere is pretty cool and the brick oven always has the place smelling like pizza which is a nice perk. The happy hour menu features reasonably priced bites and drinks which are all just kinda ok, nothing too amazing. I Tried the breakfast pizza my last visit and was underwhelmed by it, I will say i will never get it again. I'll try again with a more basic pizza and see if it gets better. But if your looking for a place with a decently priced then you've found it!

Yelp
The perfect lunch spot after visiting F. Scott Fitzgerald's apartment on Park Ave. The owl bar is only like a mile or so away and easily walkable. They have happy hour starting 4 PM with $3 beers/ wines. Since it was F Scott's favorite neighborhood bar, it was an easy lunch spot decision. The food was eh, the drinks were eh. The prohibition punch definitely gives you BANG for your buck. That shit is strong, but good. It was really cool to read the history of the owl bar and the belvedere and its famous guests all along the walls.

Yelp
Redeemed! Joe, from the bar, reached out to me after the incident and soothed my ruffled feathers. He apologized and welcomed me back. I was touched and did indeed return. He took the greatest care of me and my friend, during a Halloween party where it was super busy. Just a glance in his direction and he was attending to us immediately. I couldn't have been more appreciative of the awesome customer service I received and I'm happy to adjust my rating. So glad to have one of my favorite bars back and I'm looking forward to my next visit. Give that man a raise!

Yelp
The owl bar is located inside the Belvedere hotel and is an aesthetically pleasing place. The decorations are very rustic and the inside of the hotel is very classy. At first sight, I really really wanted to like this place but every time I go, it's just so flipping loud. I have to scream over the table to hear anything because the room just echos or the music is blaring. It's very hard to enjoy your drinks and dinner when every other word coming out of your mouth is "WHAT?!" Drink wise, the selection is pretty good - they have a wide variety of ales, ipa's, ciders, lagers, you name it on tap as well as a pretty hefty dinner and bar food menu. I've tried their brick oven pizza, their pulled pork sandwich, classic burger, and pretzel bites - all were decent (but nothing to write home about). It was all very salty as expected with any bar food but would def. recommend the drinks and brick oven pizza over any food item on their menu. Service is spotty pretty much every time I've been here - it's taken me a good 20-30 min to nail down someone for something as simple as water (maybe because they can't hear over the music??). But it's always a battle Trying to pay for the bill whenever I'm here too - and can easily add an additional 20-30 minutes waiting for someone to bring the check over. Overall, I like how owl bar is open late and there is the option to order decent food late at night but wouldn't be my first choice in the mount Vernon area simply because the atmosphere is way too loud and rowdy for me and can be pretty stress inducing after a long day

Yelp
Hmm the decor was very nice.he ultimate Bloody Mary was amazing. The ratio of grits to shrimp was off. The star of the show was the crab dip pizza. Wow. ADDENDUM (7/17/20): I was just sitting here thinking about the shrimp & grits I had here. They were pretty awful. A boatload of grits with only 5 or 6 little shrimp. A pool of grease on top. Poor taste. More like shit & grimps

Yelp
This hidden gem inside the Belvedere serves some great cocktails and food! Came here with some friends to celebrate a birthday. We ordered the wings, truffle fries, crab dip pizza and Marichkas bbq chicken pizza. Everything was delicious! The crab pizza had plenty of crab and the combination of cheese was amazing. The jalapenos on the chicken pizza added a nice kick and a must order if you love spice. We were scraping and fighting for the crumbs with each dish. Prices are reasonable and service here was great. Highly recommend this place for some good brick oven pizza!

Yelp
Had the bbq chicken pizza. Was tasty and came out quickly. You can see them cooking it in the brick oven if you sit in the bar area. Friend had crab soup and said it wasn't that good. May come back during happy hour for their drink and food specials.

Yelp
This cozy restaurant continues to impress me. The bartender Jackie is so awesome! She always recommends the most delicious dishes, is very kind and thoughtful. The dishes are great and they have a brick oven with great pizza! I go back again and again. Thanks for being so great Jackie!

Yelp
This is the restaurant inside The Belvedere. They have very friend staff and their food is tasty. We placed an order for carry out, and the staff on the phone and in the bar were very nice and accommodating. We got a few sides and sauces, and everything was correct. We got the crab ball appetizer which was delicious and had little filler, but you only get 3 bites (for $12 I'm not sure it's worth it). The sliders were all very tasty. I got the crispy chicken, short rib, and truffle, and my coworker got the tuna ones. They look big at first, but unfortunately they're mostly just bread. The truffle one had the best flavor and was surprisingly my favorite. They all fell apart immediately, so not a good option if you're dining with someone you're trying to impress. The Caesar salads are actually a decent size. Next time I would go for the pizza. They look pretty good based on the yelp pictures and look fairly big. Overall their food was okay, a little overpriced (maybe standard prices for a hotel restaurant), but we would definitely come back to try some other options.

Yelp
Our party of 4 had a great time at the Owl Bar back in February. The decor is perfect for a cold night with a cocktail. The night we went there was a wedding party taking up most of the bar area and no tables were available. Somehow we were able to get the last free cocktail table near the bar and ordered our drinks and meals from the bartender. We had a variety of apps and a few entrees all to share and loved everything we had.

Yelp
this was such a weird experience. we stood at the host stand for at least 15 minutes being ignored, and when i tried to walk and get help myself, i was scolded by a rude dude with big D energy. we finally got seated only because i waited 10 more and then just walked straight to the bar to ask for help. food was mediocre. just not that interesting. the place itself, and the fact that its inside this amazing hotel - is really cool - but the experience and food left us wishing we had gone anywhere else. ps: we had the lobster mac and cheese, a caesar salad and sweet potato fries. all were just ok.
