It’s a special place where you can experiment to be going back many years ago. Like the tunnel of time to the 50’s It took us a while to find it as we didn’t realised that it’s located downstairs. The waitresses are well trained and pleasant. The food wonderful, excellent quality 😃 The meat is very tasty and cooked to perfection. Great variety of drinks to match the meals and deserts. A bit noisy and dark, part of the atmosphere. There is at least one private room for some private dinning with a group. If you love meat it’s a place to go 😀

One of the best peppercorn sauce I have ever had in Bristol. Amazing salad selections, which for someone who has to have a veggie plate per meal, it is much appreciated. The staff was amazing, went above and beyond. The steak was obviously amazing and all the other reviews have covered it extensively, so I will talk about the side dishes. The scallops were a star for sure, must have. The chips were cooked to perfection, and the house Ceasar was not at all too creamy, but just right.

From the moment we stepped in we had a lovely welcome from the staff. Service was very quick and the food was brilliant. Particular shout out to the sprouts - they were unreal! There was a great selection of wines available too. The decor was lovely and matched the general atmosphere.

Best steak restaurant in Bristol: perfect burger, medium rare-steak, crispy chips and the roast bone marrow with bread was SO good. Cozy restaurant that looks kinda fancy but with affordable and delicious options :)

One of the best steak restaurants i have been too. Service was impeccable, atmosphere was unmatched, so ambient and classy. Staff were so friendly and accommodating. Wine list was just perfect, i recommend the Ox mother cocktail! i would love to see a chimicurri on the menu as a steak sauce!

The Ox is such a lovely setting, the rooms are beautiful and its got a great atmosphere. We went for sunday roast and thought it was incredible. As were the starters, pork ribs, bone marrow and scallops. 100% would go back again and try the steak or return for a roast. Definitely recommend for Bristol.

Visited here for a Sunday roast after seeing some online attention, booked a 4pm table due to work commitments but was not disappointed. Ordered - scallops for starters and beef roast for main with side of mac and cheese. Scallops - very well plated, looked stunning and showed off scallop in all its glory. Super soft scallop, almost buttery and melts in your mouth texture, really fresh and quality produce, it was accompanied by a few little additions which brought the dish together but did not overpower or shadow the scallops at all. Great starter! Roasts - both plates came out looking identical which I like that eye for presentation certainly shows here at the Ox! A good healthy sized plate, overall lots individual flavours here every element on the plate has been thought about and looked after, really enjoyed the greens and braised red cabbage that’s how veg should be done! Really completes a dish when veg is thought about and flavoured. Roast beef was cooked to perfection, succulent, juicy still rare but packing flavour and rested well. Solid roast potatoes too, my only gripe with those is there was only 3 :( Overall a solid roast dinner and delivers what they claim that’s for sure. Mac and cheese side - cheesey, creamy crispy top it’s everything you want from a Mac and cheese no complaints it’s a nice side dish for making the roast naughty too! Side note; gravy was nice deep flavourful with a red wine flavour present. Brings the roast together nicely! Only thing dint enjoy so much was the Yorkshire pudding, not sure if it was made in house or bought in but lacked flavour or crispiness. My only downside to the visit was the temperature to the roast, it was warm when served which realistically went cold pretty fast, the gravy was lukewarm and nothing on the roast at all was piping hot. Became a race to finish it faster than it got cold. Which is a huge shame. Overall will rate it a 8/10 based on the flavours and vibes, would be higher if a few things just a lot hotter on the plate. Would like to return.

Imogen & the team looked after us through out our delightful evening at the Ox. The food & service is always world class, we can't wait to visit again soon. Keep up the fantastic work team, we value your hospitality :) Ps. The seafood cocktail is extremely delicious.

Yelp
I ate at this place two days in a row it was so good! So I only had a couple days in Bristol, and most of the days were spent in meetings, so I did not have a ton of meals to explore the culinary scene. The first meal here was with a work group on the recommendation of a local. The next day I realized that my friends had booked the exact same restaurant for dinner. My friends offered to change the location for me, but my first meal was so good that I wanted them to try it too. It was just as good the second time around, I got a different starter, but stuck with the filet with peppercorn sauce for my main. Also, we got at different assortment of sides - all delicious! I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a yummy steakhouse in Bristol.

Yelp
Tuck discretely in the basement, the feeling of the space is warm, inviting and perfect for a couple of mates to enjoy great wine off of the list and a steak, yet also accommodate an intimate date with a lover. It's small but not cramped. The food was amazing. We had the mushroom toast and Bone marrow apps. The steak cuts were cooked to a perfect, medium rare. Definitely worth every bit of the cost.

Yelp
I know it's a big claim, but I'd go as far as to say this place is Bristol's best restaurant! Run by the team behind The Milk Thistle and Hyde & Co, The Ox is hidden away under The Commercial Rooms and it's nothing short of beautiful-dark wood panelling, soft lighting, tonnes of taxidermy and most importantly-amazing food and drink! I've been for their early bird deal before (6oz Rump Steak, chips, sauce and a glass of wine for £12.50 between 5-7) but visited last night for a "proper fancy" celebratory dinner and it blew my socks off! Definitely not one for veggies, the menu is meat heavy (the clues in the name!) I opted for soft shell crab with chilli mayo to start, followed by 10oz Steak Bavette with chips, Bernaise and a side of deep fried cauliflower, and we shared a dessert of Chocolate Delice with Salted Caramel ice cream and peanut crumble. Everything was cooked to perfection, presented beautifully and just downright marvellous but the pudding...well let's just say I'll be badgering them on Twitter for their recipe for salted caramel ice cream! Totally worth a visit for a special occasion-amazing food, amazing service, amazing atmosphere!

Yelp
I decided to take the other half here for a date night (he LOVES steak!) and I'm definitely glad I did! The restaurant has an old fashioned styling inside.. Leather chairs, bookcases, you know the drill - a lot like the cocktail bars it is a 'sister' to. The staff are open and relaxed and very knowledgeable... The service was great. We took advantage of the BYOB special offer on a Tuesday and took our own bottle of red (£5 corkage). The mister ordered steak but I must admit I've never fully appreciated steak so despite being in a steak restaurant I ordered the burger! Both meals were lovely... The Boyf said it was the best steak he'd ever had, cooked to perfection and loved the chips cooked three times.. He also liked that he got steak and chips... Simply that, no unwanted extras! My burger was so good... Ever so slightly pink in the middle, proper bun, nice chips :-) At £30 for his meal and £15 for mine, it is a little pricey but you definitely get what you pay for and I'd recommend The Ox to steak lovers everywhere!

Yelp
This is the best steak I have ever had (so far). I have searched 'best restaurant in Bristol' and chosen the result of Timeout offers. There are several choices it recommends, and I narrowed down the one near city centre. Then, the OX was there. It was not easy to find the restaurant because it is located on the basement of Commercial Rooms. If you face it, the OX is on the left hand side with its menu on the ground floor. The stairs to the entrance is behind their menu. Based on the recommendation and comments, my boyfriend and I ordered 12oz Sirloin (350g) in medium rare. The steak is delicious with fabulous marbling. We all agree it is the best steak we ever had. Highly recommended. Worth coming Bristol for this steak.

Yelp
Spectacular, First Rate Steakhouse. Brilliant. And, the staff knows how to deliver a First Rate experience. All without having to wear a suit! My new favorite restaurant in all of the UK - tucked away in a basement. A must do.
