The Oyster Box

"This 1947 hotel set in lush gardens overlooking the Indian Ocean reopened after a two-year makeover as a long overdue luxury addition to KwaZulu-Natal’s tropical northern coast. The renovation enhanced its original character while adding modern essentials including two pools, a spa (expect angelic staff and a Turkish hammam), a gym, a 24-seat cinema, and business and conference facilities. Throughout the hotel, handcrafted, decorative tiles and antiques are offset by contemporary South African art—80 paintings are by leading KwaZulu-Natal artists. Attention to detail and design extends to the 86 rooms and suites (most of them sea-facing), all richly layered in pattern, texture, and color. Durban’s Indian, Zulu, and colonial heritage is reflected in many aspects of the hotel, from the friendly, proud-as-punch staff to cuisine. The Ocean Terrace has an authentic Indian curry buffet; the crisp navy-blue-and-white Grill Room, with old-fashioned dinner dances on weekends, offers a menu of classics from curries and prawn cocktail to seafood platters, and the colonial Palm Court serves traditional English high tea. Durban’s style mavens have practically colonized the Lighthouse Bar, which leaves the breezy Oyster Bar or cozy Chukka Bar for a quiet drink."

We stayed for 4 nights as a couple. The hotel was outstanding.||The Good.||1. The location is fantastic, overlooking the Indian Ocean and the local beach and lighthouse. The sound of the crashing waves was awesome. The location is close to shops and restaurants.||2. The room was brightly decorated. It had a great bed, super minibar, good a/c and a coffee machine. Free water available whenever required. ||3. The bathroom had a good shower and toiletries.||4. The public spaces were immaculately kept. The interior was traditional, and the bar on the 3rd floor had great views over the sea. The pools were well kept, and all the grounds were well maintained. We even had a few monkeys.||5. The food was all excellent. We had room service for breakfast, and it was geat eating out on the balcony. Great choice available. We also had some other meals with room service, and al were good. ||We also tried the legendary curry buffet. The plates starters were superb, and there was a choice of 11 curries- I particularly liked the beef ones.||6. The outstanding feature was the service. Absolutely superb. The check-in process was the best ever with sparking wine and a great orientation tour.||At every point the service provided was friendly and of a high standard. We had several tours arranged by the concierge, and we got a drop-off at the car rental for free. ||The Bad.||1. One minor issue was the over bath shower, which was a bit harder to access, and it would be great if the bathrooms were refurbished with separate showers. However, the actual shower worked well.||Overall||A fantastic stay and would highly recommend. One of my new favourite hotels anywhere, mainly due to the superb staff.

This was our first time trying their high tea and it was a lovely experience. The waiter took the time to explain everything available on and off the table, which was really helpful. There was a great variety of both savoury and sweet options to choose from. What touched me the most was that when I made the booking, I mentioned that one of us is vegetarian and they thoughtfully prepared a generous plate of vegetarian savories just for our table. The desserts were also delicious and perfectly balanced, not overly sweet. We’ll definitely be coming back

The beautiful view from our room was breathtaking and sound of the ocean very soothing. However The luxury sea view room was smaller than we expected. Breakfast and high tea are absolutely the must Curry buffet, on the other hand, disappointing. It was just a buffet. We definitely will come back, and I will highly recommend The Oyster Box Hotel. It is a very special place. My big thank you to the staff for making us feel welcome and special in every way. Great work 👏 👍 👌

My family and I have been loyal visitors of the Oyster Box for the past six to seven years, and I can honestly say that every single experience has been exceptional. You have never once disappointed us. Last night, I had booked and paid for the Chai Tea event, but the atmosphere was so amazing that we decided to enjoy supper instead. The food was absolutely outstanding, and the overall experience exceeded our expectations. A special mention must go to Scott, the manager on duty, who was incredibly accommodating, prompt, and attentive. He made us feel so comfortable and handled everything with such professionalism. He quickly arranged to credit the Chai Tea booking, and we simply paid the difference for our supper. The process was effortless from start to finish from making the reservation to the communication with the staff and the service on the night. Scott truly deserves a 10 out of 10 for his warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Wendy for accommodating my reservation request. I initially booked for 5 guests , with the special consideration that my mom and aunt are diabetic. It was so thoughtful and appreciated that the high tea was adjusted to cater for both diabetic and non-diabetic guests, making the celebration even more special. Lastly, a word of appreciation for our server, Brandon i can be corrected, who looked after us during the evening. Please pass along my gratitude to Scott, Wendy, and Brandon for making our visit truly memorable. The Oyster Box will always have us as returning guests, and I look forward to many more special experiences with you in the future

The oyster box high tea is truly a 5 star experience. The food is fantastic, the staff are so welcoming and accommodating. Our waiter Sizwe was phenomenal and made accessibility a comfort. Even though I'm in a wheelchair I did not feel disabled. Brilliant experience thank you so much to the staff at the Oyster Box!

Spectacular hotel. Stunning beach front location. Best breakfast by dar. Amazing choice and beautifully cooked, presented and delicious. A choice of bars with good cocktails. Curry buffet was disappointing but maybe because we have great curry here at home. Fine dining was fabulous. Had a bit of a disaster with our room ceiling leaking but we were moved and it all turned out well in the end. Staff were very friendly. It can be very noisy and busy as it's popular with locals as an afternoon tea venue but aside from that, wonderful.

I brought my management Team out here for a treat and boy did it deliver, Great value for money especially if there are no big drinkers. Food Excellent and Service second to none. Recommend the Buffet which is hard not to go back to again and again!! I always go here when in Durban and this delivers all the time.
