"This 1947 hotel set in lush gardens overlooking the Indian Ocean reopened after a two-year makeover as a long overdue luxury addition to KwaZulu-Natal’s tropical northern coast. The renovation enhanced its original character while adding modern essentials including two pools, a spa (expect angelic staff and a Turkish hammam), a gym, a 24-seat cinema, and business and conference facilities. Throughout the hotel, handcrafted, decorative tiles and antiques are offset by contemporary South African art—80 paintings are by leading KwaZulu-Natal artists. Attention to detail and design extends to the 86 rooms and suites (most of them sea-facing), all richly layered in pattern, texture, and color. Durban’s Indian, Zulu, and colonial heritage is reflected in many aspects of the hotel, from the friendly, proud-as-punch staff to cuisine. The Ocean Terrace has an authentic Indian curry buffet; the crisp navy-blue-and-white Grill Room, with old-fashioned dinner dances on weekends, offers a menu of classics from curries and prawn cocktail to seafood platters, and the colonial Palm Court serves traditional English high tea. Durban’s style mavens have practically colonized the Lighthouse Bar, which leaves the breezy Oyster Bar or cozy Chukka Bar for a quiet drink."

The beautiful view from our room was breathtaking and sound of the ocean very soothing. However The luxury sea view room was smaller than we expected. Breakfast and high tea are absolutely the must Curry buffet, on the other hand, disappointing. It was just a buffet. We definitely will come back, and I will highly recommend The Oyster Box Hotel. It is a very special place. My big thank you to the staff for making us feel welcome and special in every way. Great work 👏 👍 👌

I brought my management Team out here for a treat and boy did it deliver, Great value for money especially if there are no big drinkers. Food Excellent and Service second to none. Recommend the Buffet which is hard not to go back to again and again!! I always go here when in Durban and this delivers all the time.

Spectacular hotel. Stunning beach front location. Best breakfast by dar. Amazing choice and beautifully cooked, presented and delicious. A choice of bars with good cocktails. Curry buffet was disappointing but maybe because we have great curry here at home. Fine dining was fabulous. Had a bit of a disaster with our room ceiling leaking but we were moved and it all turned out well in the end. Staff were very friendly. It can be very noisy and busy as it's popular with locals as an afternoon tea venue but aside from that, wonderful.

My family and I had breakfast here one day in April 2025, so my review isn't so much about the hotel itself but more about the fantastic breakfast we had at the Oyster Box's Ocean Terrace. A full buffet of Continental and cooked breakfast all deliciously prepared. It was an amazing experience. Stunning views from the terrace. Exceptional service. A beautiful hotel.

Absolutely the most incredible hotel we have ever stayed in. It’s certainly not cheap but we were celebrating our 50 th wedding anniversary and this hotel was recommended to us by South African friends. We stayed for 3 nights after our 5 nights at a game reserve so we basically just chilled out. Service is incredible, restaurant is great (don’t bother going out anywhere else to eat) and breakfasts are a feast. Highly recommend this hotel outside of Durban.

We had one of the best afternoon teas at The Oyster Box today. Our waiter Sizwe was incredibly attentive and catered to our every need. The overall ambience was exquisite and I cannot thank Sizwe enough for making the afternoon so memorable with his natural and friendly persona.

This review is abit late. However. I've been to Oyster box restaurant the Grill room a few times and the food, service, ambiance was absolutely perfect in everyway. I loved it so much my fiancé decided to propose there last year. And once again Oyster box did not disappoint. From their rooms to the views everything was perfect. Their food is hands down the best I've ever had, and I've been to plenty of fine dining restaurants and everytime nothing comes close to Oyster box. If your looking for fine dining with good food, excellent service, and the most friendly professional staff then Oyster Box is definitely worth a visit.
