I have been to every music venue in STL (most many times) since moving here 30 years ago. Having been to concerts all over the country, I have some basis for comparison.
I would previously have given the Pageant 2-3 stars. The supposedly awesome acoustics are definitely not awesome. I have seen multiple shows there and the sound has never been impressive . It varies greatly from show to show, and depends on where you are seated more than most places. I saw Willie Nelson there and could hardly recognize the songs being played. The seating is not great, often with obstructed sight lines. The employees are generally unfriendly, the security staff is overbearing, and the parking is deficient. Be careful around there, the crime rate is significant.
There are several local venues that provide a better overall experience.
Recently, we went there to see a show. It was our first live music since the pandemic began. My wife and I were accompanied by our 20 year old son. We had just taken our seats; socially distanced with our masks in place. We are a pretty non-threatening middle-age couple. My son is a clean-cut 6'2', 200 lb. young man. My wife and I each had a beer, and my son had water. My son took my wife's beer from the cup holder without her knowing and took a small sip. Suddenly, the Pageant staff was there hovering over us. We were kicked out before the music started. We had been there 15 minutes. $150 tickets plus the cost of beverages we didn't drink gone. The whole night ruined. Now I suppose that he was technically wrong, but kicking us out? We didn't buy him the beer, he snuck a sip. How about a warning or taking away the alcohol? Nope, out you go! Meanwhile the smell of marijuana in there is getting stronger by the minute, but I guess that's okay. (In case it matters, Missouri law allows minors to drink a small amount of alcohol when accompanied by parents.) Having worked in restaurants, bars, and live music venues from high school through medical school, I am familiar with the dynamics involved. However, this nuclear response was completely over-the-top. Sort of like losing your driver's license for going 5 mph over the speed limit.
If your favorite band is playing there, perhaps you can tolerate the Pageant. I will not go there again.
I am looking forward to the May 2021 opening of The Factory in Chesterfield Valley. It's slightly larger than the Pageant and should provide some healthy competition. It will certainly be safer and hopefully friendlier.
