Last year, my wife and I tried the Palate for the first time. We had a wonderful lunch- the dishes were fresh, creative, interesting and really tasty. We returned this Christmas for an evening meal - and were supremely disappointed!
Let me start with the good- the mussel appetizer was excellent. As was my wife's soup: turnip and vanilla! Amazing combo. I mean, who would think of that! Really interesting and tasty. Dessert was also excellent- the caramelized rum cake had a wonderful homemade feel to it. Which is what makes the following all the more incredible:
The main dishes we had were bland and unbalanced. I had the spear rib special, which came with basmati rice and vegetables. The rice tasted... like rice I would have made in college. There was nothing to it. No cardamom, no butter. Nary a shallot. The vegetables were fresh, yes, but... again, really bland. No spices, no clever olive oil I had with lunch last time, no sauce on the side. But then- the spear ribs- a massive POWWW of overpowering vinegar. The acidic sauce not only eclipsed the aroma of the pork, but completely unbalanced the rest of the dish.
My wife had a similar experience with the salmon, apparently the restaurant's most popular dish. The taste of the salmon was SO overpowered by the layer of grilled cheese on top, that it was more of a salmon cheeseburger! Without the bun... The veggies were not copious at all, and the mashed potatoes, underwhelming.
We spoke to our waitress about our experience, and she listened politely, urging us to please give the restaurant another try. At no point were we offered any incentive such as a coupon, a discount, a drink or a free dessert, as would be perhaps customary- or at least very welcome, given the circumstances.
Are we being picky? I don't think so, especially given the excellent reputation this place has, the wonderful experience we had the previous year, and certainly the 75$ price tag for the meal for two (including one draft beer).
Were there two cooks? Did they have an off night? Or has the Palate lost its way? I certainly hope not, as the staff are friendly and I truly believe the place to have the potential to be a fine restaurant.
The experience we had is truly a mystery to me.
