The Passenger Hostel in Porto has a fantastic location, right inside São Bento Station, making it incredibly convenient for exploring Porto and neighboring cities. The facilities are outstanding—clean, modern, and beautifully designed with great common spaces and comfortable rooms. The attention to detail in the decor and the overall ambiance of the building added so much to my stay.
However, my overall experience was marred by the behavior of one of the volunteers. I overheard her openly admit that she didn’t care about the other volunteers or the guests, which was disheartening. Additionally, several other comments either overheard or direct towards me felt unwelcoming and judgmental. Her attitude created a strange and uncomfortable vibe, not only for me but also for several other guests, that felt completely at odds with the hostel’s otherwise warm and inviting atmosphere.
To the management: I strongly recommend revisiting the vetting process for volunteers. The core strength of a hostel lies in its sense of community and the interactions between staff and guests. Ensuring that volunteers are just as passionate and guest-focused as your employees would go a long way in maintaining the high standards you’ve set.
While this incident was unfortunate, I’d still recommend The Passenger Hostel for its incredible location and amenities. With a few tweaks to the team dynamics, it could be perfect.
