Baby Jumping and Worm Charming: 60 of the World's Oddest Traditions

"Each day for nearly one hundred years, a group of ducks have left their penthouse at Memphis’ Peabody Hotel and waddled down a red carpet to spend the day playing in the lobby fountain. This whimsical tradition dates back to the early 1900’s when the general manager of the Peabody returned from a fruitless hunting trip and placed a group of live ducks in the hotel fountain as a joke. The guests were so delighted by the addition of the adorable birds that the owners decided to let the birds stay. What started as a simple gag has continued throughout the years and is now a daily display of pomp and circumstance. Every morning around 11:00 AM, the ducks are led down from their rooftop penthouse to a red carpet bordered by adoring onlookers. Accompanied by a Sousa march, the five ducks trot up a small, custom stairway into the placid waters of the marble fountain where they dutifully swim until they are once again led back upstairs around 5:00 PM. The whole ceremony is preceded over by the “Duckmaster,” a position originally filled by a circus trainer that joined the hotel in the 1940’s, and which is now filled by the occasional celebrity such as Molly Ringwald or Peter Frampton. When not strutting their stuff for the hotel guests, the ducks live in a $200,000 enclosure on the roof which is built to look like a scaled-down penthouse. The walls are made of glass so that visitors who can’t wait for the daily walk can head up and see the the famous fowl living the high-life. It may have started as a joke, but the popularity of the Peabody Duck March proves that the owners of this hotel certainly aren’t quacks." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"Why we love it: A historic property that’s become the heart of Memphis The Highlights: - A historic property, but with updated rooms - The twice-daily Duck March tradition - Afternoon English high tea, served Wednesday through Sunday The Review: The Peabody may be most famous for its entertaining Duck March—when the hotel’s five North American mallards waddle from their Royal Duck Palace on the rooftop to the lobby fountain—but it’s only a small part of the property’s charm. For more than a century and a half, this ornate Italian Renaissance building has represented the height of luxury in Memphis. In celebration of 150 years of hospitality, the 464 guest rooms and suites were recently refurbished, adding modern amenities to the already elegant hotel. While The Peabody is conveniently located near all the highlights of downtown Memphis, guests have everything they need right on property. Specialty shops ring the lobby (including Lansky Bros., which was known as the clothier to The King when Elvis ruled Memphis), while the opulent Chez Philippe continues to set the bar for downtown fine dining with its menu of classic French cuisine and regular English afternoon tea service. Other, more casual drinking and dining options range from the convivial Lobby Bar—a favorite gathering spot for locals—to Capriccio Grill, serving some of the best steaks in Memphis."

Thoroughly enjoyed this historic hotel. We are traveling with our pet and were so happy to spend a few days in this lovely hotel that accommodates pets. We were greeted with a gift bag of dog bowl, leash, and duck toy. That was a lovely surprise. The location is downtown within 15 minutes of Graceland, sun studios and civil rights museum. We walked to a great place to board our dog for 1 day. Mutt Island which I highly recommend. I recommend taking the time to enjoy the Duck Walk ceremony. The duck master and team are very accommodating for children to give them a memorable experience. Staff are very friendly. We did miss coffee in the room but it is readily available downstairs. Overall a great experience we hope to return again.

Google
Fantastic stay at the Peabody! We really enjoyed this place. The hotel is beautiful and the ducks are certainly popular! Nice downstairs area and when staying here you have to go up to the roof and view the duck hotel lol. Room was clean and comfortable, a bit on the smaller side but it’s an older hotel. Love the stay so much I actually brought my wife back here, such a nice stay! Will definitely come back!

Google
Great place to stay. Clean, beautiful, loved the duck walk as they get all the children involved. Makes the children feel so good. Didn't try the food this time but will when we return. Best Beds we have slept in.

Google
We loved our stay at the Peabody! The ducks walking on the red carpet was a site to see. The hotel staff is very hospitable at all times. Our family enjoyed eating a white chocolate duck dessert each day. The bar area was very nice for hanging out with a drink and gathering your thoughts from the day. We worked out in the gym and wished we had our bathing suites for the hot tub. Our daughter may go to school here and if so we will be staying here often. Highly recommend if you like an older historic type hotel with an opulent feel to it!

Google
Well now, let me tell y’all—this was by and far the finest hotel experience I’ve ever had, bless it! From the moment I rolled up, I was greeted with the kindest, most heartwarming welcome from sweet Charles over at valet. That gentleman not only made me feel right at home, but he also helped me wrangle my two spirited bird dogs all the way up to the room. Now if that ain't Southern hospitality, I don’t know what is! Big thank you to Charles and Joseph—they sure do know how to treat a guest right. Throughout my stay, every single staff member made me feel like I was part of the family. Miss Michelle in the lobby lounge kept things lively with her cheerful spirit and delightful conversation—such a joy! And Lord have mercy, let’s talk about Duck Master Kenon Walker. That man is pure magic—a whimsical soul with a heart full of Memphis pride and a storyteller's gift. If you get the chance, pull up a chair and chat with him about history, love, and all things Memphis. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget. Y’all, don’t go overlooking this gem—it’s not just a hotel, it’s the very heart and soul of Memphis wrapped in Southern charm. I’ll be back, no doubt about it!

Didn't stay in the rooms, they don't take cats or large dogs. Sadly. But went to eat and walked around and saw the famous duck parade. Too cute. Hotel is beautiful. Food great and service perfect. It's such a beautiful old historic place. Everyone should at least visit once. It's in downtown area that's not pretty. There's things around, but nothing worth walking to.

Google
Not a hotel guest but stopped in to shop at Lansky's & enjoy a drink at the hotel lobby bar. Gorgeous historic lobby, kind & friendly bartenders, & a nice cool stop on a hot summer day for a cocktail or glass of wine. The history of the ducks is really fun too!

Matthew Stuart

Google
Let me tell you about a Hotel that is a one of a kind experience. Absolutely amazing staff. Great shops inside. Great food at the restaurants. But there is nothing like watching the Duckmaster march ducks from an elevator, on a red carpet to the fountain at 11am and 5pm. Do not miss a chance to see this!! Lots of history here and lots of fun!!

Yelp
While we did not stay here overnight, a visit to the Peabody in Memphis is a MUST! We opted to partake in the nightly "Duck March" and my daughter and I (along with all other kids in attendance) were given the opportunity to sit front-row on the red carpet to watch. Come early to get a good spot and stay afterwards for a photo opportunity with the Duckmaster. You can also take the elevator up to the roof to view the "Duck Palace" to see where the ducks live (and catch some great photos of Memphis from the top). Tip: The Duck March occurs daily at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to snag a good spot in the lobby near the fountain and elevators. You do not need to be a guest at the hotel to watch.
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
This place is all about the ducks right? Lol. Well, the show is all well worth seeing. If anything, just for all the history they tell you about the hotel and the duck tradition. Certainly for Memphis, the hotel is pretty over the top in looks. As you look around, to think of what it took to build the place so many years ago. It's certainly been preserved beautifully. Second level of the lobby...be sure ans look around this area. They have plenty of original artifacts preserved and on display. Pretty neat to see it all...

Yelp
OK, we missed the duck walk. Not sure if seeing ducks walk by is really something I'm interested in, but I will tell you this. We worked to get to the bar at the Peabody twice in our two nights that we were in town. It's a great room to visit in the service was extra special and the cocktails tasted great. We strongly suspect the hotel is as fantastic as the bar, but we don't know for sure. So if you're within about five blocks of this establishment and the thirst gets the best of you this is a very worthwhile for you to consider for cocktails. Heck, you could even see what time the duck walk is and watch that if you're interested.
google avatar

Yelp
It's always a fun place. The ducks are cool to watch. And, the desserts are good at the dessert shop.
google avatar

Troy S.

Yelp
We went to see the ducks, of course. Is it touristy? Yes, is it splendid, also yes. I really enjoyed it. Had a coffee and a day at the coffee shop. We did not stay at this hotel. The lobby is quite fancy. It's impeccably maintained. The staff are courteous.

Yelp
Memphis, Tn. I used to stay at this hotel in 1968 when it was an absolute dump. It is now quite the opposite, a show of opulence and glitz. It is quite the spectacle and it is fun walking around checking things out. There is quite the buzz of activity at all hours. You have to pay for parking, and it's not cheap. It is also quite a walk from the garage to the hotel if you're pulling a roller bag. There are some confusing routes to try to get to the hotel lobby that are not well marked. If you haven't checked in, the elevators are locked because you need your room key. When checking in we were told that they don't guarantee any bed arrangements and a single king was no longer available but two doubles is what we were assigned. Fine, let me just get to the room, I gotta pee. The room had no refrigerator which I need for storing my medication. I had to improvise with ice. The shower was the old tub spout arrangement with a curtain. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were too big. The elevators are too slow and always crowded. The scanner for your room key is not always responsive. There is a real big deal with a lot of pomp and hype about these ducks that leave the fountain in the evening and walk a red carpet to an elevator where they ride up to their quarters. I guess it's cute or something because a lot of people vie for front seats and crowd the balcony to watch this. The long winded but ornately dressed MC drew the ceremony out for a painfully long time, but they did sell a lot of drinks during this yawner of a spectacle. When leaving the parking structure there is no clear instruction on where to scan your room key to activate the gate arm. First you have to remind the check out clerk you need your key to leave the parking structure. Then there is a small sign that says "Put key here". This is where you actually scan your key, not at the main parking machine kiosk. There may be a place to leave your key but I didn't see it.

Yelp
I first traveled to Memphis over 32 years ago and then moved there, and lived there for 26 years. On my first visit I stayed at The Peabody and have been there many times since, but just never got around to a review here. Let me tell you about The Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. This historic luxury hotel, known as the "South's Grand Hotel," has been a fixture in downtown Memphis since its opening in 1869. The Peabody is famous for its elegance, charm, and rich history, as well as its unique tradition of the Peabody Ducks. The original Peabody Hotel was built by Robert Campbell Brinkley and named after his friend, George Peabody, for his contributions to the South. The hotel quickly became a success, attracting numerous notable guests, including Presidents Andrew Johnson and William McKinley. Over the years, The Peabody underwent several redesigns and enhancements, maintaining its historical essence while adapting to modern luxuries. But my favorite thing here are the ducks!! Twice every day, a smiling audience gathers at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee to see six local celebrities: the Peabody Ducks and the head duckmaster. Indeed, one of the most iconic features of The Peabody is the daily March of the Peabody Ducks. Since 1933, ducks have been trained to march through the hotel lobby and swim in the ornate fountain, a tradition that continues to delight guests and visitors today. The Peabody Ducks live in the "Duck Palace" on the hotel roof and are led by the head Duckmaster, currently Kenon Walker. Each duck serves a 3-month term. Two weeks before their tenure ends, a local farm the Peabody has worked with since 1981 delivers six new rookies to train how to march, use an elevator, andswim in a fountain. Six, so there is a backup duck, because chances are that one of the ducks won't take to the whole march-in-front-of-lots-of-people thing. But while the faces may change, you can be sure that every day, ducks will march proudly in and out of the lobby of the Peabody Hotel. The Peabody offers a variety of elegant guest rooms and suites, ranging from sophisticated options in The Loft at The Peabody to the two-story Romeo and Juliet suites with a unique spiral staircase. The hotel features numerous amenities, including fine dining options, a spa, a fitness center, and over 80,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Bottom line: The Peabody Hotel is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Memphis, whether for business or leisure. Its rich history, luxurious accommodations, and commitment to providing exceptional service make it a standout choice for those seeking an unforgettable experience in the heart of the city. Yelp
We went to the Peabody for the Duck March; no joke when they say get there at least 30 minutes before the March to get a good seat. Thankfully they prioritize the kids sitting near the red carpet to get the full experience; down side when you have a small Tod, waiting for 30+ minutes for a few ducks you could have your hands full. Overall cute experience

Yelp
I have visited and slept here many times and it's always so magical! From the minute you walk through the doors you feel the beauty, warmth and history. The Peabody bar lobby is the perfect place to sit and people watch. Order a virgin chocolate martini and enjoy every delicious dessert sip! Watch the ducks as they bathe in the lobby fountain. You have so many choices around you as well for entertainment so it's in a great location!
google avatar

Yelp
When you're in Memphis and your girl wants to go watch ducks walk through a hotel lobby, what do you do? You go watch ducks walk through a hotel lobby... Pro-Tip, skip the crowds waiting by the elevator door and grab a seat at the bar, you can see everything and have a cocktail in a comfortable chair. People start lining up for this pretty early and they have a whole ceremony with a Duckmaster who tells the origin story before introducing the ducks. That said, this is LITERALLY some ducks, walking 30' down a red carpet, and jumping into the hotel fountain. They don't do tricks, or meet and greet you, they are ducks. I am glad I can say I have done it but the cute factor wears off quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
I could not come to Memphis without going to the Peabody to see the world famous ducks. It's definitely a once in a lifetime experience to be seen in the elegant Peabody Hotel.

Sally S.

Yelp
This was one of our better hotel experiences. We came here for the weekend to celebrate my husband's 45th birthday. Everyone was incredibly kind and definitely a great place for our 13 month old girl. Everyone was sweet to her and we felt spoiled. The holidays is a beautiful time to come to the Peabody!

Yelp
This hotel is wonderful! We arrived and were greeted by the bell staff with a smile. The front desk staff was also very friendly. Carpaccio Grill restaurant was also very good. For breakfast we shared the biscuits- they were delicious. For my entree, I had the poached eggs with potatoes and rye bread. It was really good. The rest of the entrees looked good too. The restaurant staff was very friendly too. I'd definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here several times in over the last few years and surprisingly I've never written or submitted a yelp review on this place. This place is an institution in downtown Memphis and is a must visit if not, also a must stay if you are in the area. It is Steve in history and Rich in it stories and it's connections to the Memphis community as well as obviously it's most famous resident Elvis. It becomes very crowded and very popular during the duck time so be prepared to get here early in order to secure a seat as there are bars and seating around the fountain however there's going to be a lot ofpeople also up in the balcony for standing room only. Like all hotels, there are restaurants bars, as well as shop, so be sure to definitely stop by and take a moment in time as it seems as though they have really tried to remain true to their history and some of the original decorations and furniture.

Yelp
This was one of the "must see" spots on the list for Memphis. The oldest, most elegant and sophisticated hotels in the state. We stopped by the hotel lobby bar for a drink and appetizer. This hotel is known for the "duck march" which takes place daily at 11am & 5pm. I can't speak to the rooms or hotel stay but will review on the hotel amenities. The duck march is exactly as it sounds. A group of ducks marching from the center fountain to the elevator. It's an old tradition that they've maintained since the beginning. It's a cute thing to see. You'll want to get there early if you want to get a good seat to see them. They are in the center fountain of the lobby bar. No standing is allowed in the bar but there are tables and chairs all around and a second floor to watch from. The duck hut is located on the roof you can head up after the 5pm march for photo ops of the sign and see where they rest. The hotel itself has so much beauty and character. You will see old wood carvings and stained glass throughout the entire hotel. I imagine but in it's hay day it was truly the spot to be. It is still quite elegant even after decades. The have a restaurant and lots of shops within the hotel. The cocktails & mocktails were great. They have signature cocktails, beer, wine and full bar for whatever else you fancy. We ordered hummus, it was not good. Served with pita chips that were rock hard and cucumbers. We ate the cucumbers and left the rest. Skip the "lite bites" and go down the street for good food.

Yelp
I have been visiting The Peabody since I was a child because it was my grandma's favorite brunch. However, I had never stayed and decided on this trip to stop in and stay the night. Booked the room online on their site and selected one of their specials ($199/night which included self parking, holiday ornament, free hot chocolate, resort fee waived). When pulling up, the letter "B" was out on the sign, so it read "The Pea_ody." Drove around the building and found the self-parking. Get ready, because it is a hike to the lobby from the garage. You will twist and turn, go up and down ramps before you finally find the lobby. Check-in was smooth and headed up to the room. Room was on the small side; bathroom was on the very small side. Room was clean, but seemed dated. The most disappointing part of the room, was when I opened the curtains and found the sheers had been shredded. Yikes. Those need to be replaced. In the morning, there was a long wait at the elevators (many people waiting to attend conference). I, of course, went to the roof top to visit the ducks (they were hiding in their little house). I had a great time at the lobby bar which was hopping on a Friday night (will write separate review). Overall, bed was comfortable and I slept well. But, rooms and elevators are in need of upgrades.

Yelp
Beautiful rooms. Impeccable service. The hotel is a historical wonder. When I have read historical novels of the 1800s I pictured this hotel. The Duck march is whimsical but it would the hotel attract without it. The price is right. I highly recommend a stay here when you are in Memphis
google avatar

Yelp
We have stayed at the Peabody a few times and always enjoy our stay. The main lobby ambience is top tier and transports you to a place from another time. We always love the duck march and sitting at the hotel bar meeting people from all over the world. To stay here you must understand that this hotel is old and there are some things that come with age like old paint and furnishings. Parking is kind of confusing and expensive. There was some mold in our shower that is quite a turn off when it can be so easily mitigated by cleaning with bleach or regrouting. We ran into a problem when we brought our leftovers back to the hotel from dinner and realized our room did not have a refrigerator. We had to take it to the bar and ask for the bartender to find a refrigerator to store it in. Overall we love this hotel but it does need some more attention to detail when it comes to cleaning and guest accommodations like refrigerators in the rooms.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
From the daily duck parades to the "corner bar", everything about this hotel exudes friendly service with a classy touch. We were here 3 nights but could have stayed 10 more. Did not get a chance to enjoy the Tremendous location just 2 blocks from Beale street (and 200m down the alley from Rendezvous BBQ) Highly recommended!
google avatar

Becca S.

Yelp
I did not stay at the Peabody, I did not drink at the Peabody, I did not shop at the Peabody. I came for the ducks. And I got the ducks. And they were adorable. If you have ever been stuck in traffic and wonder why everyone has stopped, just to see a mama duck and her babies cross the street, then you will understand. There are no babies here, this is an adorable tradition and tourist draw. Ducks in an elevator! Appreciate it for what it is, a half an hour to dedicate to tradition and see some cute little ducks.
google avatar

Yelp
Been coming to the Peabody long before yelp. Been a family tradition since before I was even born. My daddy's favorite hotel. His father is from Memphis & was always a favorite of our family. We have many great memories of this hotel, many weddings & family celebrations. We have always been fans of the Peabody's famous "duck parade" haha. Such a beautiful hotel with great history. A must visit. Bucket List worthy. We just recently had moi family birthday lunch here like the good o'l days. It was so much fun. It could not have been more perfect. Brought back all kinds of memories of when dad used to bring us here when we were kids ohmygosh. Just wonderful memories. Legend. accommodations, 5 stars. service, 5 stars. Celebratory lunch's/brunches, 5 stars. happy hour, on the duck parade, with baby ducks in your cocktails, 5 stars. Family tradition for 3 generations. Priceless. Highest Recommendations.
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
The hotel is extremely old. Without the ducks I'd give this hotel two stars. The food is not great at the conference the bathrooms are old and broken down. Was not impressed overall with the space. The service was okay at best

Yelp
This was first introduction to this majestic hotel and we determined at that moment we would be back. Who would have guessed that the duck March would be the highlight of my trip to date! I felt like my 5 year old self bursting with so much excitement and happiness! Had my non-alcoholic fuzzy duckling and my daughter had a regular rubber ducky! It truly is spectacular and no trip is complete without seeing the world famous duck march. People gather from all over each day to see the ducks parade the red carpet at 11 am and 5 pm.
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
We came here for cocktails, appetizers and ducks and we were not disappointed! The duck mark happens at 11 and 5 pm each day and it's so adorable and fun to see. The rubber ducky cocktail was delicious! The pimento cheese was also great. I would definitely come back here again for happy hour!

Yelp
Honorary Duckmaster typing... This is a destination hotel just off of the famous Beale Street. But we were here for the four hens and 1 drake! Add the ducky day experience to your stay. Children and kids at heart alike (like my sister & I) will enjoy! We had exclusive limited access to the multimillion-dollar duck mansion where the wild mallards luxuriate for their 3-month residency. Bonus: With our Ducky Day package, we received special desserts, apparel, a novelty cane, and a jumbo Duckmaster rubber duck. The hotel itself is quite airy and as the second location of this historic venue, is wrapped in beautiful displays of gold and marble. Furniture & fixtures are well appointed and are a lovely mix of old and new. There are several eateries on-site, including Chez Philippe where we indulged in high tea. Because we are unapologetic Spa snobs, we visited Feathers Spa on the lower level. Hotel guests have full access to the jacuzzi, pool and fitness center as well. For you club/lounge folks, there is a weekly rooftop party on Thursdays guests can access for free from 6-7pm. As for the room, the bedding and pillows were very comfy throughout our stay. The embroidered robes The duck-shaped soap and turn down service were a nice touch. Thank you Manager Ashley for taking the time to ensure a worry-free birthday celebration. You turned a negative to a positive easily and with haste. I believe she made our trip EXTRA special with lovely intermittent goodies. Much obliged! Special appreciation to the esthetician Breanna (sp?) at Feathers Spa. She provided light airy customer service and was an all around delight. Thank you to our Duckmaster Shannon who was engaging, upbeat, and an overall BOSS. Quack quack!!

Yelp
Hand me my vest, walking cane and top hat--you'll f feel like you've gone back a step in time. Well appointed shops and classy restaurants around the perimeter. Rooms were of adequate size, well lit and good water pressure. The telephone didn't work which made my inquiry for a late checkout a chore. Number and type ports too few.
google avatar

Mary E. L.

Yelp
I was very disappointed. The hotel is dated and didn't appreciate the long wait time for elevators. No refrigerator or coffee maker in room. The bathroom is ridiculously small and practically unusable because there is literally no room. Upon checking out there was no mention that I would need my room key to exit out of the self parking, no sign stating that either. To make a frustrating situation worse, the front desk clerk couldn't have cared less. Maybe they should put more effort in caring about the guest rather than trying to upsell every little thing. It's too bad, the hotel deserves more. For a luxury hotel, it is not. Two stars because the ducks are pretty darn cute.

Yelp
Such a great place to visit just to say you did. We travel back in time I feel when you enter.

Nazeema B.

Yelp
My experience with the Peabody is nothing short of incredible. I came here for a conference and spent 4 nights. Each day my room was meticulously cleaned, and they have turn down service two additional times. They replace your two bottles of water each day and place two chocolates (delicious) by your bedside. The duck March is the cutest thing and always has a crowd. We had hotel breakfast and linch a few times. The breakfast is AMAZING! Some of the best biscuits I've had. The hotel bar is wonderful. The lobby is beautiful. Here's what i would complain about. There were a lot of people at the hotel on the same schedule so the elevator was very slow. The hotel itself is darker than most hotels I've stayed in. Dimly lit all around. The pool is small and in the basement. You have to walk through the fitness center to enter the pool and have to turn on the hot tub from the fitness center where people are working out--awkward.

If you couldn't tell from my profile picture, I'm a duck lover. So when I did some scrolling and found a hotel where DUCKS SWIM IN A FOUNTAIN, I knew I had to go. The room was clean and very nice. The food was expensive, but at least the menus were wide and the food was fantastic. The ducks were cute and impressive, the pool was clean and set to a perfect temperature, and the merchandise was awesome (I still have two shirts and a snowglobe in my room). It's amazing for duck lovers, hotel lovers, avid travelers, and anybody who's looking for more from their hotel.

Yelp
I stayed at the Peabody for 5 nights in August 2024. The service appears to be above average until later. I was charged water/coffee as part of the room cost, but was not disclosed to me that this was an additional fee on top of the room cost. This was $13.95 each day. I would have opted out of this. Furthermore, the water in the blue bottle tasted like metal. I surmise that the water filtered in house in refilled because the waterline was up to the very top of the bottle and would squeeze out if you hold it too tight when opening it for the first time. After a few night, I came back to the hotel and find that there is no soap, no shampoo, no body wash or conditioner. The sink was not washed. It still had a film of oil on it. The coffee cups were not washed Furthermore, as I got into bed, I found 2 holes on the fitted sheets. Can you imagine a hotel using sheets that are torn! The restaurant food was inedible. I called the manager at the hotel and s/he never returned the call. I would not stay at this hotel again.

Yelp
We stopped by at this hotel during our Memphis tour for 2 reasons: to witness the duck march and to see Elvis favorite clothier Lansky Bros store. So the review focused mainly because of these but the hotel looks grandeur itself and maybe worth staying in. Maybe in another visit. The traditional duck march is a popular show that should not be missed when in town. We were there 15 minutes before the showtime and the lobby area where they will march from the elevator area to the fountain was full and can't find a better spot to stand. Anyway, we made our way to get a glimpse. The Lansky Bros clothing store is a must to visit just to wonder what type of clothing style The King used to wear on his early career years. It has become a popular clothing line during Elvis time but history says that it is the real friendship between them that made to be stronger. The location of the hotel is perfectly situated in the middle of the town where everything is within reach.

Yelp
The walls are paper thin in the rooms. The guests are really loud. It's more of a party hotel for locals. I can literally hear the toilet flush next door. Not a quiet relaxing hotel.

Yelp
I didn't stay at the hotel but I came by for the famous ducks. The property is gorgeous. It has great restaurant options, nice lobby bar, the famous lanksy bro store plus a great location. If I return to Memphis I would stay at this hotel.

Yelp
I recently had the opportunity to stay at The Peabody and while I appreciated the historic significance & opulence of the hotel lobby, I was disappointed in the condition of the bed linens and the customer service. My hotel room beds were made up with duvets that did not have any substance to them. They were down comforters that no longer had any feathers left in them and were essentially just a sheet/duvet cover. I checked the label of them and discovered that they are Pacific Coast down comforters - the same brand I have at home so I know that they do in fact come with feathers in them. I am assuming that they have been laundered so much that the feathers are no longer there. This is rather disappointing given the reputation of the hotel. I was also disappointed by the staff when I approached them to remedy the situation. I asked concierge services to bring me another blanket/duvet, hoping that the new one would have feathers in it or any kind of substance to it. I spoke to the conceirge on two separate occasions & when I still had not received a duvet, I revisited the desk and requested again. At 8pm a duvet was delivered to my room, but sadly it too did not contain any feathers. I returned to the concerige desk, showed them the duvet & and requested a blanket with some bulk to it. I was assured it would be taken care of. At 9pm I still had not received a replacement duvet/blanket and called it a night. I expected more from such a prestigious hotel - in terms of the quality of the linens and the customer service. Upon returning home I reached out to the Peabody directly & privately to give them this feedback. I never heard back from them. I travel to Memphis frequently and at this point in time would not be choosing to stay in this hotel again.

Yelp
Several of the employees were really rude and then they charged my card for more than the final bill they emailed. I called to ask why and they couldn't explain. First they said room incidentals (they don't have coffee machines or a wet bar in the rooms. They are small and only have two bottles of water) then they said it was valet parking (I didn't use the valet and was charged $26 to self park for one night) then they just said they would bill me and hung up. It took four times to get through to someone in mgmt and they couldn't explain why they charged my card an extra $40. I wonder how many other people had unauthorized charges on their card. Did they notice? And why pay more for horrible rude service? Southern hospitality my ass!

Yelp
Booked a reservation for two nights cost of $234 per night. We were surprised when the total was over $700 dollars. Undisclosed taxes and fees increased the total almost 50%, unacceptable, had to cancel reservation, will stay somewhere else.

Yelp
The hotel is iconic but the accommodations is average. I arrived to find out my card had been hacked. I was able to get a handicapped room but was moved the next day to a much smaller room. Bed too soft that if you moved to the edge you fell off. Tiles in bath loose. Shower space small and the spray went out on the floor. Almost fell. I paid close to 900 for three nights. It was not worth even close to that. $125 at most. I was very disappointed with all the add on charges. They have plenty. Do not valet park..!! I wrote the hotel the after my stay requesting a significant refund. No reply.

Yelp
Let me start by pointing out that I only stay at the best hotels all over the world. Four Seasons, Ritz Carltons, etc. Although it bills itself as one, the Peabody is not a 5 star hotel. Possibly a 3 star. If it was in any other city in America other than Memphis it would be half empty. Was anticipating an amazing experience after receiving calls and emails from Anna in the "VIP" dept. Checked in late on a Friday night. The hotel itself is beautiful and has that classic feel. Was not greeted warmly or made to feel special at all as we were sent to our Romeo and Juliet Suite. We thought we were in the wrong room because it was so tiny with the smallest bathroom I've ever seen! We actually went back down to reception to complain. After much confusion and rudeness by the front desk, we were shown that there was a downstairs living area that was hidden behind a closed door. Did I mention that it hadn't been cleaned or dusted in what looked like 6 months? Or that I was supposed to pay $2000 a night for the privilege? After much back and forth I was told that I could get a discount for the night. No other details shared. The next morning after breakfast in the club lounge (nice enough but nothing special) and after watching the duck parade (something every one should see!), a nice young man at the front desk named Christian was extremely understanding and helpful and switched us to a King Suite. This was a 1000 percent better room at half the price. That's it for the positive attributes. One of the worst qualities of the Peabody is clearly the housekeeping. Did I mention that for $2000 a night there is no turndown? The pictures attached only tell part of the story. Dust and dirt everywhere. Now let's talk about the security at the hotel. Because of it's historic nature, the hotel lobby is always crowded. Everyone wants to see those ducks! Unfortunately, anyone can get on the elevators and go up to the guest floors. There was no noticicable security at all and there is no one to stop them from going right up to your door. In one of the cities with the highest crime rates in the country. Pretty scary. This is probably one of the most profitable hotels in the country. And the most beautiful. Unfortunately, they don't seem to spend much of it on their guests.

Yelp
After last time, I know rooms are not that nice, but we loved hanging around here. And shopping...they have great shopping. We watched the ducks parade two nights in a row. The Duck Master was so entertaining and informative. And the drinks in the bar are world class! Love the shops here. Spent way to much money, but love everything I got, Including a carved duck from the jewelry store. I smile every time Iook at it! If you're visiting Memphis, do not miss the Peabody!

Yelp
Such a unique hotel! Right in downtown Memphis, this was our spot of choice to grab a drink and a bite to eat AND to shop! They have so much to do in this hotel. The shops in the hotel are amazing! Plenty of Memphis, Tennessee and Peabody- like merchandise. All were on the bottom floor and right next to each other. The signature 'duck' drink was my favorite drink all weekend! It was so smooth and I drank it SO fast! The cute little ducky on top with a duck themed stirrer we're great touches. We sat at the hotel bar which is on the bottom floor... there is no rooftop bar! We thought there was, but when we got to the roof.... No bar, so don't go up there looking for a bar unless there is an event up there. I also had a cupcake from their bakery. This was also duck themed and red velvet. So delicious and was huge! I saw other customers buying sandwiches which also looked so good. The famous ducks where in the pond on the bottom floor, and they are so well behaved! They just stayed in their pond. We didn't stay long enough to see them go up to their room on the roof, but it was so great to see them.

Yelp
What a disappointing stay! We traveled 4000+ miles for a dear friend's wedding and while it was certainly worth it to celebrate the couple, I cannot say I enjoyed my stay. Accommodations were decent at best but meager when considering the price point, and the service was atrocious for any price point. Bless the lobby staff's heart, they took issue with everything from us enjoying the bar to what we were wearing or where we were standing, sending "security" to hover 5 ft away and glare at us for ten minutes at a time, and just had to share with us how horrified they were that we might be so evil as to order doordash at midnight after a massive wedding. To top it all off, our room was charged for self parking and then we were forced to pay AGAIN for self parking in order to leave. $60 to self park overnight in Memphis TN. Not sure where The Peabody gets its accolades but we were certainly happy when check out time came!

Yelp
I feel like everybody should visit The Peabody once in their life. The history and traditions of this hotel make the stay an experience. There are a few things I would be aware of however, before visiting. 1. The food and drinks there are not the caliber one would expect from such a famous hotel. We ate at the steakhouse, the CornerBar, and the lobby and all three were not that good. 2. If you want to see the ducks walk down the red carpet (which I highly recommend) go down to the lobby early. They will come out of the elevator so the best seat is the area in between the elevator and the fountain. 3. The rooms are spacious (although old) but the bathrooms (at least ours) was extremely small. We came in just to see the Warriors play (sorry Grizzlies) so we only stayed one night. 4. The lobby gets VERY busy so although the atmosphere with the piano is inviting, it's difficult to get a seat. 5. If you order a drink make sure you ask for a little ducky. Some will charge you $2 extra and some servers won't. Regardless it's photo worthy so definitely a must. Overall, it was great experience and a part of history.

Yelp
Went to see the duck march on a tour. It was difficult to see them come out of the elevator because of the crowd, but once they were in the fountain, it was super cute. The hotel is beautiful! They have a lovely gift shop and the common areas are very clean. I plan to stay here next time I visit Memphis.

Yelp
After two nights on the VIP twelfth floor, we thought the free bar and breakfast were excellent. The lobby, however, was rude and management staff irrelevant. Three bus loads of tourists for every duck walk prevent the rate-paying guests from seeing this only attraction. Downtown Memphis has become a dump with homeless people hitting us up the second we walked out the door. It's unsafe.

Yelp
The attention to detail is evident throughout this hotel. Duck Master Kenon Walker made my honorary duck master experience so special. I will remember it forever. I have been to the Peabody many times, but this is the 1st time I got to stay there. It was a treat from beginning to end. We went to the Civil Rights Museum which was wonderful. We at the Blues City BBQ (on Beale) - best ribs I have ever had!! Had drinks at the beautiful Corner Bar. It was a wonderful visit.

Yelp
A historical, breathtaking and welcoming hotel. Lots of history, beautifully decorated in an Old World architectural fashion but with modern functions. The staff was some of the best I've had the pleasure of interacting with, including the wonderful piano man who was a retired band teacher of 41 years. He took the time to go around on his break and talk to everyone in the main lobby. They have mallard ducks as residents who parade down from their palace via with their Duckmaster escort, on the rooftop (yes you can go visit and see it), to the lobby everyday at 11, where they take their daily swim in the large marble fountain in the lobby. Then at 5pm, they parade back up to their rooftop palace doe the evening.

Yelp
Beautiful building and the duck parade is entertaining. This is a Memphis must see! Notice the gold duck feet on the bricks around the outside of the building. Very majestic!

Yelp
This was my first time visiting Memphis and staying at the Peabody was a must! We stayed for 2 days in a Superior Double room on the 5th floor. During our visit, we watched the grand entrance of the infamous Peabody Ducks, had dinner at the Capriccio Grill, had drinks at the Lobby Bar, had Peabody Afternoon Tea at the Chez Philippe, and explored the beautiful building. THE DUCKS They were obviously adorable. They go through the lobby at 11am and again at 5pm. Get there EARLY for each "SHOW" because each time is literally a show. We missed it the first day because we came just in time and there was only standing room left. The second day we were there about 30min early and there was not seating room left in the lobby, but we managed to find 2 comfy, well-positioned chairs up in the mezzanine where we had a pretty decent view. THE ROOM 4/5 stars for the room on the 5th floor for a few reasons. For around $700 for 2 nights, the room was beautiful and was really all we needed; here are my pros and cons for the room: PROS: Beautiful room, free bottle of water, nice water pressure, pretty view, lots of pillows, comfy beds, large/clean mirrors, and quiet except for the street noise CONS: No fridge in the room, a large hole in the covers on one bed, the floor needed to be swept, and the hallways on the 5th floor were eerily dark CAPRICCIO GRILL 4/5 stars - The food, salad, and wine were pretty good, but nothing really special considering the fancy hotel hype. We didn't order the fancier items on the menu though so that may be a factor, but the other tables I saw were not oooing and ahhhing. The service was solid and attentive. LOBBY BAR 5/5 stars - GREAT drinks and service. Every drink I had was delicious! AFTERNOON TEA I am a self-proclaimed afternoon tea connoisseur - it's one of my all-time favorite ways to enjoy a meal and pass the time. So, when I give this experience 5/5 stars, it means something :) Our server was Hubert and he was incredible, informative, and friendly. We went with the 2 tea options each - all 4 teas were AMAZING. The tea sandwiches, scones, and sweets were all wonderful. Overall, we had an amazing stay and would happily return! Highly recommend!
