On the Grid : Pen & Pencil

"They might not sell pens and pencils but they do offer finger licking food, beautiful wine and a laid back atmosphere. The bar’s unusual name and slick style derives from the famous mid-20th century bar on East 45th Street in New York’s ‘Steak Row’, which was popular with journalists of the time. This corner street bar is ideal for whatever you fancy, whether it’s morning eggs (in any way imaginable) mouth-watering burgers for lunch or a seafood kebab for dinner. After a liquid lunch? Whether you are a cocktail connoisseur, a wine wizard or a hophead, the lovely staff will mix you up anything you like, whether it is on or off the menu. This chameleonic venue changes its skin through the week, offering resident DJ’s Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights as well as a low-key vibe for a quiet brunch. Wanting to host your own party, launch event or networking night? No problem - speak to the team and they can get a private hire sorted!" - The Neighbourhood

Google
A cute and vibey spot in the heart of Manchester! I always enjoy coming back to this place with my friends, whether it’s for drinks, brunch or a quick bite! The staff are always friendly but waiting times - particularly for food - can sometimes be long, especially if it’s a busy day. However, we did get a generous discount last time after waiting for our food for a substantial amount of time so cannot fault them! The interior is beautiful and food has always been tasty! Prices are competitive. Definitely give it a shot if you’re in the northern quarter! 👌🏻 8/10

Google
overall decent spot, probably wouldn’t be back but the food was alright. tried the steak and hash which had rather dry steak, but the flavours were good. they do have huge portions! nothing to write home about but a cute pub nonetheless

Google
Nice bar but don’t come for the food.. had the small plates- onion rings bone cold, chicken pink and bloody, and the cheese in the poppers was dry. Felt like everything had been keeping warm all day and just brought out for us on order.

I was a little worried that the reviews I’d read about this place would be true for our visit, my friend booked the bottomless brunch as a birthday treat for me and we were not disappointed. The food was yummy, sausages on the burrito a little burnt but still delicious, steak was incredible, the special cocktail was delicious, the only thing that wasn’t great were the pancakes were a little bland and could’ve been fluffier but I’m just being picky now. The waitresses and waiters were brilliant the service was fast, we had 4 drinks within the first 40 minutes of being there and definitely had at least 13 rounds. The staff kept coming over and asking if we would like to order another drink I’d definitely go back. They were also really accommodating to my preference of no eggs I don’t have an allergy I just can’t eat them and they were happy enough to make sure they weren’t served on the plate. Can’t fault them really was a great experience.

We actually came here twice during our visit to Manchester because we enjoyed it so much! I'm genuinely surprised by the poor food reviews because both of our meals were delicious. The first day I had what can only be described as one of the best vegan breakfasts I've ever had, and the second day I had an exceptional veggie burger. The staff member serving us was just lovely, so attentive and friendly. Really nice vibe about the place. Hope to visit again in the future.

Google
The food and service was great, lovely atmosphere. Was wary because of some of the bad reviews, but we had brunch and it was delicious.

Google
Cool place to dine with friends in the Northern Quarter of Manchester. Relaxed atmosphere snd friendly staff. Food very good although portion size a little stingy. Some vegan options.

So glad we came here for a pre theatre meal , instead of the standard places The food was great ( even better with the Monday offer ) The staff were so efficient and friendly We would definitely come back again to try the other food on the menu

Yelp
The food was not well prepared...I ordered Parmesan truffle fries, and there was a dab of truffle oil and no Parmesan cheese. They forgot to deliver our drinks. And to top it off the chicken was undercooked. The place has a nice setting and atmosphere but the service was disappointing. The team needs to do less chatting and eating and pay more attention to their customers.

Yelp
Lovely spot for Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch and also great for an evening drink or 2! I've visited on a number of occasions, for all of the above and I'd say it does breakfast/brunch best. On my most recent visit I was invited along to the P&P breakfast club. It's a networking event although I didn't see much of that going on but it was great non the less! The service was slow on this last occasion, I felt they could have done with more staff on for the event but I've not experienced this before so I'll let them off this one time :) Some guy gave an interesting talk on design and everyone was served eggs benedict with ham and salmon, accompanied by a delicious little sweet pancake skewer. I went for salmon only and it was done well, the poached eggs were perfection and I was suitably stuffed for the remainder of the morning. The coffee was delicious too. The staff were rushed off their feet but kept calm and remained approachable and friendly, very professional. Thanks The P&P!

Yelp
Everyone I know love the food for this place and looking through Instagram pictures it really makes me drool from browsing their menu. We took advantage of the monday 50%off and their happy hour from 5pm. Having ordered a 3 course meal with a glass of wine, cocktail and tea. The meal costed £40.00 between two people. Plus it was close to Piccadilly Station as my friend had to catch a train back to London at 7pm. Starter: We ordered jalapeño poppers, this fillings of the cheese was like potatoes croquettes that is nice and fluffy but it was a shame that there wasn't a lot of heat. Main: At first, I thought I won't get fill up because the plate looks so small but at the end I nearly couldn't finish the plate. We also ordered a burger, which was nice and juicy and they cooked how I like it (pink in the middle!) Chips were cooked and seasoned too. Dessert: Finally cheesecake was creamy and not overly stodgy plus the plum sauce with a hint of cinnamon was quite tart that really helps to cut through the swetness and compliment the flavour well. Value for money, good quality food but mediocre service as it was hard to judge whether we should be seated by the waitress or not a no one greeted us as we walked in.

Yelp
I visited Saturday for some pre wedding show fuel. We only went to P&P as Alabama's was (as always) rammed and we couldn't get a table for 45 minutes. I was gutted realising I couldn't take my friend to Alabama's after raving about it so much. However, P&P absolutely did it disappoint! Promptly seated by a member of staff with a drinks order taken. Followed by the All American Breakfast which was very reasonably priced at £9.50! The hash browns were SO good so if you do visit, make sure you sling some on your order. Pit Beans were delicious but the show stealer was the Poached Eggs, they were amazing and cooked to perfection. Cracking venue for Sunday chills with friends, we loved the vibe in there. Shall look forward to my next visit. OH! And before I forget, they make a great latte!

Yelp
The Pen and Pencil is one of the newest additions to the Northern Quarter's ever burgeoning coffee shop scene. We didn't realise quite how new it actually is when we headed over for Sunday 'brunch' as it feels like they've always been there! After some menu research (one of the best Sunday pastimes) I was really interested by The Pen and Pencil's selection - it's a little bit different, with breakfast/brunch items such as courgette rosti with poached eggs and pork & beans and sandwiches/salads, including a delicious sounding taco salad. I quickly decided on the pork & beans, and the other half had the french dip sandwich. The latter came with coleslaw and rosemary chips, which were very tasty and certainly seemed handmade. The sandwich got rave reviews, though @wewantplates probably wouldn't approve of the small crate it was served in. The pork & beans - beans with bbq sauce, bacon and pork belly served on top of a muffin - was a real comfort dish, especially with the addition of the pork belly. Service was friendly throughout and really accommodating; I ordered a belvoir raspberry lemonade but unfortunately they didn't have it in stock just yet. Despite this, they whipped one up for me with some fresh raspberries, which was probably better than my original choice! It's always nice to have somewhere new to try as the NQ continues to expand, and The Pen and Pencil could be on to something special with their menu and location.

Yelp
The guys behind the Northern Quarter's Dry Bar and Didsbury's The Violet Hour newest venture is Tariff St and Hilton St corner lot, Pen and Pencil. They open for brunch at 10am and includes a varied mix such as pancakes, steak and eggs and omelettes. They also have Sandwiches and salads on the menu so healthy options are available. 'The State Flower' cocktail hit the spot with its fresh Portobello Road Gin, habanero infused watermelon puree, lemon and soda - served tall with lots of ice. Their beer and ale section is 32 types strong, including NQ favourites such as Camden Pale Ale and Anchor California Lager too. I'll be back to pen and pencil again for sure.

Yelp
I was meeting friends for brunch in Manchester and they asked me to pick a place to eat, the only caveat was that it must serve eggs benedict. We decided to try out The Pen and Pencil as I've heard good things about their brunches and my friends also found the menu acceptable. We went one Saturday at around 10:30am. Our friends got there before we did and were seated in the back of the place. We were able to find them after a member of staff aided us. The interior is dark with wood and art on the walls. The seats were quite comfortable and the menu small but varied enough to appease any taste buds. I ordered a glass of tap water and an English Breakfast tea. The tea came in an individual filter tea pot with a small jug of milk. The staff and no problems topping your pot with more hot water if you request it. I decided to go for the steak and eggs as it is Pen and Pencil's signature brunch dish. 4oz pave rump steak, two fried eggs, a hash brown and a pot of hollandaise sauce. They asked me how well I wanted my steak done prior. The whole meal was cooked really well, although I felt my hash brown was maybe too charred on the outside, the inside was lovely and soft. The steak was cooked the way I specified, the fried eggs still had that lovely gooey yolk I love and there was plenty of hollandaise. Win! Two of my friends chose the eggs royale and one chose the avocado and feta. The latter was served with sourdough muffin layered with chilli jam, rocket and two soft poached eggs. The eggs royale came with a sourdough muffin, lightly smoked salmon, buttery wilted spinach and soft poached eggs with hollandaise sauce. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and would come back here again. The place is really nice and the staff friendly, I really can't complain.

Yelp
Really funky bar & restaurant with a really relaxed feel to it. Good waitress service came over very quickly. Not a large choice of food, breakfasts and lunch mainly. Atmosphere is causal & relaxed, we were greeted upon entering the bar. Food is reasonable priced & they have some funky retro beers. Worth a visit :) Try the Philly steak with cheese with chips and home made coleslaw

Yelp
After reading Jess H's ROTD I was dead set on trying this place for breakfast on my next brunch stop. I didn't have to wait long before I dragged my friend along for the experience. We arrived around half 12 (breakie is served till 4pm) and blagged one of the last proper tables however there was plenty of bar stools and window seats left which was fab. I loved the atmosphere in here - the last thing you need for breakfast is having to sit and wait in a crowded bar on a Sunday...this is my day of calm! The music in here completes the atmosphere with background favourites such and one republic. You chose your own seats on arrival and after that it is table service. We swiftly ordered some hot drinks - a coffee and earl grey tea for me. The tea came with fresh tea leaves and a free top up of water when asked! Having already sussed the menu out prior to arriving I opted for the pen and pencil eggs - poached eggs on a toasted muffin atop a sausage patty, bacon and a homemade hash brown served with a scrummy hollandaise sauce! It was a great twist on the normal eggs benedict and was just the right size for a spot of brunch! I really did love it here - regular brunch stop ... I think so!!

Yelp
Stop by for a drink before dinner at el Capo on a Tuesday .. A very relaxing bar/restaurant. Wooden decor like most of the NQ bars.. I had a Thyme and Life - it's pretty tasty, and pretty pink color with some hibiscus petals.. I'm not sure if I would go there for food just seem very generic . But I could be wrong since I haven't had food there. But I will go back for some cocktails.

Yelp
I like drawing. or at least i like other peoples drawings....so the name Pen & Pencil was instantly intriguing. However, its actually (apparently) based on mad men. I dont quite get it, there's veneer in places and some 60's esque stools and some faux suede....but aside from that i'm not really getting the mad men thing. But to be honest its irrelevant, so lets just say it inspired someone to build what is actually a really nice bar. There are long benches. There are many plugs (for day time laptop working) There are stools in the window for those wanting to sit alone and there is a separated area round the back for larger parties. Its 1pm right now and its full of business types, creative types and me having lunch / brunch. Stevie wonder is on the stereo and people are bustling about. But still there's a laid back atmosphere. Its not too loud, its not too quiet. Its just right. Wifi is available - necessary for any freelancer that makes bars their office and decent work space with the long benches which can easily be shared. so why am i giving it 4 stars out of 5. Well when i first walked in i nearly walked out again. The menu wasnt inspiring at all and the print / design of the menus felt more chain restuarant. HOWEVER i ignored my first impression based on this and ordered a favourite. Now i believe you can really judge a place on its eggs benedict and if thats true then this place comes up trumps! 2 eggs on 1 large muffin topped with a perfect hollandaise and rocket. Yes thats right you heard me say one muffin, something i too would normally complain about, but it was large enough to accommodate the 2 eggs and *(drum roll) came with perhaps the best hash brown i've eaten on the side. (good for yolk mopping). I initially thought the hash brown was breaded camembert, which was a little surprising on the side of an eggs benedict, so was delighted to find a truly excellent hash cake perfectly fried. I was really pleased to see that behind the menu was excellent chefery (is that even a word?) I would also like to applaud a young gent called Mark who works at Pen & pencil, he was immediately attentive, helpful and knowledgeable, well spoken and polite. I then watched him serve and help a number of clients and characters at the bar. He didnt stop...when not serving finding other things to be doing behind the bar and keeping himself busy. I doff my cap

Yelp
Lacklustre and didn't live up to expectations. Very much style over substance. Loved the interior of this newish place in the NQ but the slow service and average tasting, cold food really let it down. The menu choices looked really good, I wanted almost everything off the breakfast menu, which is available until 4pm. Are there any happier words than 'all day breakfast' on a menu? We waited a long time for the food. The place was half empty so I'm not sure why try can't get meals out in a decent time frame. It's hard to get a fry up wrong but sadly the American breakfast was a disaster. When elements of a meal are cold then it makes it hard to enjoy the whole plate. The toasted muffin (I'd switched the pancake for it as I needed bread to mop up a post wine tasting hangover) was stone cold. The beans and eggs were, at best, luke warm. Mr F are his Philly cheese steak sandwich but we both agreed we wouldn't go back. Sad as the interior was just right for my taste.

Yelp
We went to the Pen and Pencil a while back not long after it opened. Aside from curiosity and wanting to try a new place together with a coupon lead us there on a school night. It was quite quiet in the area we got seated, which admittedly wasn't near the main bar. For mains I ordered chicken tacos which isn't what I was brought. In fairness I think I must have misheard her when she put them down but when I clarified the situation, I was quickly brought the right dish. Having said that, the waitress did blame the kitchen staff, which whether true or not was irrelevant and not wholly professional. The food was pretty good from what I can remember and there was a decent selection of drinks on offer. At some time going forward I will definitely return for food and not just drinks (as per the photo I've uploaded with this review)

Yelp
We booked in for brunch, which I'm glad we did, it was PACKED. There was a great range of brunch on offer and not too expensive. The staff were friendly, recommended items off the menu too and were attentive. My partner and I both had the American breakfast. Perfect poached eggs, bacon not over cooked and the hash brown is wonderful. We really enjoyed the food and we weren't rushed when we were finished eating too. So we had another round of teas/coffee and had a good natter despite it being busy. Brunch was good, I will be back for lunch or dinner next time!

Yelp
Bottomless brunch; my friend booked us 3 bar seats for the £35 brunch deal - unlimited food and alcoholic beverages. The alcohol selection included Mimosa, Prosecco, Amstel, House Cocktail (ours was rum based) and a Bloody Mary. Tip - the amount of rum in the cocktail is extremely generous, we witnessed the bar tender pour a whole bottle into the big cocktail mix. I only managed 2 breakfasts; I had the Eggs Pen and Pencil (muffin, poached eggs, sausage patty, bacon and hollandaise sauce) followed by the American Pancakes with berries. The former I found really tasty and couldn't fault, but this does contain a lot of food if you're planning on getting more than one breakfast! The pancakes were not what I consider American as they were quite flat, as opposed to light and fluffy. I had seen pictures on Yelp of larger ones, so not sure what happened there. The service was initially a little slow and as we were sat at the opposite and of the bar we felt a little neglected compared to the bigger tables. I had to go up to ask for our drinks at one point (it's table service), but service improved afterwards. The rule is supposed to be one drink at a time, but a very lovely waiter kept brining us drinks! Top tips - make sure you go with an empty stomach and pace yourself with the drink as is easy to get drunk quickly! I'd also ask for a table as opposed to at the bar.

Yelp
Bottomless brunch. Need I say more! The concept alone sounds amazing but with a menu to make even the serial brunchers's mouth water this is the place to be in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Held once a month the £35 a head is a bargain if you're anything like me and can put away 3 courses and non stop booze. The only comment I would make would be that I was disappointed I didn't get to work my way through the whole menu. My food baby was too much by the end of the 4 hours. Maybe mix and match plates would be an option! Put away your pens and pencils and get down to bottomless brunch! (And take me with you)

Yelp
I was so disappointed with my visit here! I booked up for Saturday morning and I had been looking forward to it all of Friday, I must have read the menu about ten times and chose what I wanted well in advance! We arrived and I told the girl behind the bar I had a booking, gave her my name etc...to be told 'oh we were going to put you in the back but there's no tables left, sit out here if you like', so we sat on a table at the front of the bar, no one brought us menus so after a few minutes of looking around we got up in search of one ourselves! Our server came over and we ordered drinks but queried some things on the menu for my dairy free friend, she didn't know the answers so went to ask the kitchen and she quickly came back but didn't really have much to offer us, we asked whether we could swap the pancakes for a muffin so make it dairy free which she seemed hesitant about, I was shocked because it wasn't an outrageous request! It all got sorted and we ordered, all was good. Our drinks arrived and my tea was set down in front of me and was told 'I only brought over hot milk, you didn't want cold did you?', I kinda of regretted agreeing to it because I did want cold but I'm not that fussy, I was just frustrated at the lack of good service! Our food came, I opted for Eggs Pen & Pencil, poached eggs, served with a sausage patty, pancetta crisps and covered in Hollandaise sauce! Delicious! Although I had bacon not pancetta crisps but that isn't a complaint because it still tasted incredible! The food was sooo good, I can't explain how much I enjoyed it! I feel like I've just launched into a giant rant about this place but the service really wasn't good. The girl serving us wasn't knowledgeable about allergies so my friend was nervous when his food arrived in case their was dairy in it, it should be basic training to know what's in the food! We didn't feel valued as customers and being in an area surrounded by cafes and amazing places to have brunch, good service can be really important to set you apart! I really want to come back and have the food again because it was incredible but that should be coupled with good service so two stars because the food saved them.

Yelp
For my birthday meal out, occurring almost a month after my birthday, Rich brought me to The Pen and Pencil. I'd heard good things about the brunch menu here and the evening menu looked exciting too. We arrived at 7.30 on a Saturday and the bar was busy with lots of atmosphere. We were quickly shown to our table in the dining area. The seating included a bench along the back wall which was curved and turned out to be quite uncomfortable sadly. We ordered: - Coconut crusted fish fingers with orange marmalade - Buttermilk chicken wings - Blackened red snapper with lime scented rice, mango salsa and fennel salsa - Banh mi tacos The fish fingers were, on the whole, way too sweet for me. I think the combination of coconut and orange wasn't ideal, and I would maybe have preferred a sweet/savoury or sweet/sour flavour. Not to say I didn't enjoy them, as they didn't taste bad and the fish itself was flaky and delicious. I'm glad we shared though as I couldn't have eaten more than half the portion. Chicken wings were not very memorable, it would seem, as I have almost no recollection of them. Blackened red snapper was a bit of a risk for me as I don't really love rice or mango, yet I really wanted this dish nonetheless. I'm really glad I ordered it as it was amazing. Everything worked really well together and the fish was delicious and cooked perfectly. This was the kind of dish I was sad to finish. There was a misunderstanding and we were originally brought the fish tacos rather than the banh mi tacos. When we pointed it out to the waitress she went to great pains to tell us that it was the kitchen's mistake and not hers. This irked me a little as a) I didn't really need to know whose mistake it was, just that it was going to get sorted and b) it seemed like she was throwing other members of staff under the bus which is a bit unfair. She was really lovely and friendly otherwise though and that was my only complaint about her, which is possibly something which is personal to me. She offered to let us have the fish tacos as well as the banh mi tacos which was really good of her, although we declined as neither of us really fancied them, so I hope the kitchen staff got to pick at them! The banh mi tacos (when they arrived, which took no time at all) were really good. I only managed to get a little bite before they were inhaled, which I enjoyed. They have a lovely cocktail menu. I had The Rum and Honey Route which was really good. Thankfully the honey flavour was not excessive and just added a nice rounded sweetness. He had the Next Stop Smalls which was actually better than my choice. I didn't know pear and rum went so well together. Overall I really enjoyed this meal, although I think the prices are quite steep. I can't complain too much as on this occasion I wasn't paying, but I can't really afford to hurry back. The quality of the food was good though, and I enjoyed the drinks too. Service was friendly and attentive.

Yelp
We fancied checking out the P&P at lunchtime on a Saturday to help line our stomachs for what was to become a prolonged drinking session in town. I'd seen a while ago that the owners were apparently aiming to bring a taste of "Mad Men Manhattan" to Manchester - having only caught glimpses of the TV show I wasn't exactly sure what that meant. There are some retro adverts in collages, so that might have something to do with it. The interior is certainly slick-looking, with wooden flooring, exposed brick and cast iron columns (it's the NQ, so natch). We sat on some raised, contoured wooden bench seating which was comfortable to lounge back on, but the choice of lighting there was terrible - bright, white LED spotlights. The bar and main seating area is at the front, with a smaller room with more seating at the back, separated by a lift shaft. I ordered their Monte Cristo sandwich on egg-dipped bloomer bread, which was ok, but I'd have eaten anything given how long we had to wait for our food to arrive. Our waitress neglected to mention there was a serious kitchen delay and we kept trying to get her attention but she had a master's degree in avoiding eye contact with customers. Add to that their choice of beers has something to be desired - it'll be the last time I pay way over the odds for a small can of Camden's. High marks for style, but lacking in substance for us. Disappointing.

Yelp
Nice pub bar on the end of Northern Quarter. Big place perfect for meeting with friends . Food was surprised for me nice. Not big menu and that is amazing . My full recommendation from starters is chicken wings and crab cakes. Main: Burger with salad. American Weiteress with great blue ocean hairs is amazing. Excellent customer service.

Yelp
Stopped in for a nightcap on the way home from a night out as we had heard some good things about the place. On first impressions I was was actually impressed, bouncers on the doors were polite and chatty, the decor was pretty quirky, I loved the look of the park bench/deckchair type seats in some of the booths. At first glance, the beer menu seemed extensive, but it ended up being quite 'meh'. Lots of small cans or cider options, leaving only 2-3 bottles to choose from. Service was pretty slow, and the bar was littered with empty bottles/glasses/etc. even though it didn't seem particularly busy. I'd happily give it another chance, but I'll have a back-up venue in mind if we end up in a similar situation

Yelp
Great brunch. We needed it after one too many late night cocktails in the same establishment (try the Dead Man Walking). I recommend the Pen and Pencil Breakfast - poached eggs, sausage patties on sourdough with hollandaise sauce. Brunch doesn't get any better than that. The staff were attentive and friendly and the coffee was high quality. Definitely on my list for my next trip to Manchester.

Yelp
I was attracted to Pen and Pencil as I heard it was a Mad Men themed bar - as a huge fan of the series, I really struggled to see the similarity or even influence, which was a bit of a disappointment from the start. However, setting aside that preconception, it was a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere - nice communal benches and colourful decor - and it was easy to get a table on a Tuesday night. The menu was concise but varied, with options such as harissa aubergines, lobster, lamb cutlets and jalapeños offering plenty of variety. The idea is you graze in 2-3 dishes per person, at about £6-8 per plate. We weren't really in the mood for tapas, so opted for the Pen and Pencil burger which I have to say was delicious. Big meaty burger with fiery cheese and juicy bacon on top, in a squishy brioche bun. Really hit the spot. Plenty of selection on the drinks menu - would like to return to try the cocktails actually - and came to about 25 quid for two pints and two burgers. Not bad. The service was great but if anything over keen! The lady kept pouncing on us to see if everything was okay and we'd finished, even when we'd clearly not... Rather that than the other way round though, I guess! Anyway, a pleasant visit - did the job!

Yelp
The food was disappointing but the venue and staff made up for that. The pancakes, described as thick on the menu (we expected American style pancakes) were thicker than crepes but no thicker than an English pancake. Taste was good however. Their spin in eggs Benedict was more disappointing. Poached egg underneath a sausage patty means the hollandaise sauce does not get to interact with the egg at all, instead the very small amount of sauce is smeared onto a strip of bacon...madness :) We will be back however, I still need to try their Ruben sandwich.

Yelp
Overall a bit disappointed with the food. The restaurant itself is lovely- great tables and decor, and friendly, attentive staff. I ordered the French toast and it was a mess. Completely undercooked- gooey on the inside. It says grilled banana, toasted nuts and caramel syrup... The bananas (which was maybe a full banana?) was not grilled and just cut up, the nuts were raw macadamia nuts, and just regular maple syrup drowning the already soggy toast... I told the server that it was undercooked and she just apologized- when ultimately it the issue could have been rectified in a different manner. The kitchen definitely needs some work, and the staff should be properly trained by the management on how to solve these issues.

Yelp
Went here with four friends and had a lovely meal, the staff were friendly and found a table for us without any issues. Table service was a bit slow, but I put this down to how busy they were, which is often a good sign. The menu is a little pricy but delicious and I got to see five different dishes that were all eaten and enjoyed, only criticism is that if you order flattened rump stake it is impossible to get it cooked pink. They have nice cider on tap too, which was appreciated by 3 of us. I will be back again.

Yelp
Judging by previous reviews I feel I got the time of day wrong when I visited Pen and Pencil. We headed over straight after work and it seems the evening menu is quite different to the day menu and somewhat more limited! We had a choice of about 6 mains and 8 or so smaller dishes to choose from (with no healthy option in sight). After questioning one of the waiters about what they'd recommend and getting a largely mediocre response along the lines of nothing is out of this world and its all standard pub grub, Esther H and I went for nachos with beef brisket, chicken wings and a pancetta and fig pizetta to share. The waiter was right, everything was tasty enough but nothing really stood out and none of the flavours got me hugely excited. The beef brisket on the nachos was also very dry and chewy. A pretty cool place, very much in keeping with the rest of the northern quarter, but the food I had and the menu I saw didn't excite me.. perhaps I ought to give brunch a go in the hope for more variety!

Yelp
15!min wait for a table, 30 min for coffee- so took off bill, 40 mins + for food so 50% off. Though coffee was lovely, service when noticed has been responsive- though I was on the edge of my seat about to express my thoughts. The food is excellent to say the least, just fix the timing and communication and you'll be my favourite place!

Yelp
Busy and busting bar in the northern quarter, had lots of different sprints and beers on draft. Great place to start your evening!

Yelp
Went to a private party here. The staff seemed friendly clearing away drinks and plates as well as bringing out the birthday cake. The service at the bar was pretty quick for a busy Saturday night.

Yelp
I was in Manchester visiting friends, went here on Sunday for late brunch. Despite a very busy day, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is really laid back and comfortable. I had the American breakfast and really enjoyed it. A large portion of quality, delicious food and they were happy to make some small adjustments for my order. we really enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere- highly recommended !
