Housed in a colonial building, built in 1918, The Phoenix is a historical gem. There are glimpses into its history around every corner. Presidents, Royalty & stars of years gone by have stayed here. ||A warm welcome (and check-in beverage) set the tone for our stay. ||Our room had a lovely balcony and was traditionally kitted out. If we stay again, we would book a suite as our room was a little tight for space, especially with large luggage in tow. ||Brekafast by the fountain, with the sound of bird song was a great start to the day. The selection was excellent, and as throughout, the staff were friendly & helpful. They can make a great pot of tea too. ||The only slight disappointment was that the bar was closed; it would have been nice to have had a cold G&T after a day of exploring. Maybe next time! ||We hope to return soon.

Beautiful colonial hotel, in the middle of the city.|Rooms are large and nicely decorated. Large bed (a bit on the hard side). Nice little refreshing swimming pool. Good shower.|Breakfast is plentyful with lots of choices. I missed some yoghurt. And the fresh juice bar was very strange: i asked some fresh orange juice: was not drinkable: i think they throw a whole orange with peel into a blender and than add (a lot) of water....|Diner menu is very good.

Beautiful old building and very helpful restaurant manager and restaurant staff. We stayed three nights and enjoyed the food and spa. Only reason for 4 stars is the tired looking bathroom with no cream nor conditioner. May have been supplied if requested but as a five star these are generally available in room/bathroom. In the scheme of things this is really minor. We loved the hotel and it was super convenient for our travel plans.

After spending 2 nights at The Phoenix Hotel Handwritten Collection I can share that my experience fell significantly short of the 5 stars they proudly display. ||Part of the loyalty for hotels group is the benefits they offer over other groups. I am a Accor Plus Gold member but apparently this does not mean much at this property. ||Upon check-in I was given the basic check-in speech, my membership was not recognised and my benefits were not detailed if they were granted or not, I was tired and just wanted to get to the room so I left the desk quickly. ||After a quick nap I called the front desk to ask about my benefits like room upgrade, welcome drink location, F&B discount, etc… the front desk had no idea what was I talking about and put me on hold in complete silence for 20 minutes so decided to approach the desk and inquired. Duty manager Hardi was active listening to my inquires but the first impression was already broken, he offered fruit to be sent to the room (which is part of the welcome amenities for Gold members) and a special drink that never got. ||I’ve stayed at many heritage Hotels around the world but Old does not mean poorly maintained, this Hotel felt worn out and in desperate need of internal renovations (refer to the photos). ||Lastly the amenities in the room (shower gel, body wash and hand wash) felt cheap. There was no conditioner nor body lotion guests have to call and request this items. Once again, this is supposed to be a 5 star hotel…||The only reason I’m giving 2 stars is because of the restaurant staff that was great to deal with otherwise it will go way down. ||Definitely not up to the 5 stars international level of service and terrible for members of Accor, would definitely book another brand.

The hotel is classic and slightly dated, but its location is excellent. The staff are friendly and genuinely helpful. However, there are a few areas that need improvement: 1. Seating Arrangement: There should be a clearer system in place to indicate whether a seat is occupied or available. 2. Airport Transfer Service: The airport drop-off was poorly coordinated. Although I informed the hotel well in advance about my flight details and required transfer time, there was no arrangement or follow-up until I had to approach the reception desk myself to ask. 3. Billing Process: The billing for the airport car service was confusing and inconvenient. I was asked to pay for both the pick-up and drop-off during check-in to avoid having to place a deposit, but only the pick-up was actually charged, and I was asked to pay again for the drop-off at check-out. In addition, various other expenses during my stay could have easily been charged to my room and settled in a single payment upon check-out, but this was not handled consistently. Overall, while the excellent location and warm staff are clear strengths, the hotel would benefit greatly from improving its seating system and providing clearer, more organized arrangements for both transportation and billing.

We had a great stay of four days at this wonderful heritage hotel that has been maintained and preserved in an excellent way. Our rooms balcony lookout wasn’t great and we were moved by kind staff who responded quickly to our concerns. We had a lovely room with beautiful local decorations. The pool and the gym were maintained very well and had modern equipment. There were lovely service areas for the bar and restaurant that kept to the heritage traditions, as well as a local room that was restored with historic arts and furniture. All in all a great stay - it was quiet although on a major road and close to tourist sights and shops and restaurants. Very good value as such a hotel in other cities around the world would be many more time as expensive.

Such a beautiful heritage building and amazing decor. The staff are so friendly and helpful, and will organise guided tours of local attractions such as Borobudur and Prambanan temples, Ramayana dance theatre and city tours. The restaurant serves a wide variety of food and the breakfast buffet has to be seen to be believed. I would love to return.

The Phoenix is a fine colonial hotel. The pool is beautiful, our room was spacious, staff are friendly and the buffet breakfast and other food was well prepared. However, there are several drawbacks which took away from this being a 5* experience - many bathroom and bedroom amenities are not there - including hair conditioner, solid soap, body lotion and bath robes. Only two 8 oz bottles of water are provided each day and on the second day our room was not cleaned when we came back after 3 pm. Finally, alcoholic beverages are very expensive - 40% more than other Javanese hotels. It is good value by international standards but maybe not by Indonesian standards.
